ECU Location and 8V Brakes on a Driver
« on: 14 April 2005, 12:20 »
I currently have a Golf MK2 GTI 8v that I am breaking and I was just wondering if someone could let me know the location of the ECU on this type of car. I have checked through the Haynes manual but cannot find anything.

Also my little brother has a MK2 Driver and I was wondering if it is possible to swap the discs and pads off the GTI onto his car.

Do I have to change the caliper as well or can I use the ones off the driver?

if your standing in front of the car looking at the engine the ecu is in the top left corner, normally under a plastic cover. if you look for the wiper mechanism then look left you'll see it.

the brakes should be a straight swap. the discs are vented an so the pads are that bit thinner to allow for this. you shouldn't have to swap the calipers.

Front Discs and pads are a straight swap from GTi to Driver. Fitted some to my 1.6. Discs are fatter but pads are thinner to compensate. No need to change calipers

What year is it?  Early GTIs didn't have an ECU ;)

The car is a D reg and I think it is a 1986.

It has the mirrors half way up the doors and the wipers on the wrong side if that helps.
