Camshaft regrinding
« on: 16 February 2011, 17:39 »
Just read on another thread that the ABF responds well to the inlet cam being regrinded. Called a local machinist shop and they said that I'd need to know the spec I'd want it grinded. What does the ABF respond well to inlet cam-wise? They also said the cost would be "a couple of hundred"....For a little more I'd buy aftermarket cams so I'm not sure on that price. I'm going to call a different shop tomorrow and see what their price is, if not then I'll ask around for recommended specialists

surely if you grind an existing cam all you can do is reduce the lift / duration?
You only ever need two tools in life. If it moves and it shouldn't use Duct Tape. If it does not move and it should, use WD40.

Nope. I don't know exactly how it's done, but the original cams can be ground to a new specification.

Nope. I don't know exactly how it's done, but the original cams can be ground to a new specification.

You grind the base centre diameter down, to leave the lobe sitting higher...of course, you can only go so far before the BCD gets too small for the follower to adjust to...and you are limited to the profile of the lobe depending on what's there to begin with.

For an ABF running Digi 3.2 and a Cat/lambda, you really want lots of lift, and semi-limited duration.
Pointless throwing in 300 degree cams with 10.5mm lift...far better with 268 cams and 11.7mm lift (for example)

Potentially a re-grind will give more lift, and standard-ish duration...which should work. If the lifters will cope.

Reducing my Golf count by the week....
..but gaining motorcycles.
