I had a look in my GTI a few days ago (after seeing this thread) and there is a small amount of creamy substance. I assume this is due to the cold weather and my short journeys.

Just condensation due to short journeys, I sometimes get in the 911, aircooled so no coolant to turn creamy.  A good long journey with extra thrapping here and there should shift it.

Have had the same issue with my GTI from new - scared the crap outta me at first.

Comments in here are right - the technical term is that your oil is emulsifying - condensating at the coldest point which is naturally at the filler cap. I too do short journeys and when you mix in the cold snap it is quite common.

Once you give her a good ragging or just a longish 40 mile or more drive check the dipstick straight away. If the oil on the stick looks well oil like then you are fine if it looks like the brown milky goo then its time to get the cheque book oot

I have read that it is still best practice to clean the goo out on a regualr basis.

I had same problem on mine. Major panic but dealer confirmed it was condensation due to short journeys.
