Title: Thinking about buying a GT TDi
Post by: easton7 on 23 October 2008, 12:08
Hi folks

Currently driving a 2002 Celica VVTi but cost of running it has become too high
Started a new job and I'm racking up over 300 miles a week (Can't stand public transport)

Pretty much decided on a 130 GT TDi to replace it
Hopefully performance won't be down too much and I'll save a decent bit of cash

Any advice for buying one?? What to look out for/avoid etc
My cousin is a mechanic for VW so I'm sorted for making sure it's mechanically sound
Reckon i'll get 4-4.5K for my car so looking at getting one of a similar age with average miles
Seems to be plenty about with FSH etc

Looking forward to having some mid-range torque

Cheers
E

Hi easton,

I usually keep my veedubs around a year or so then move onto another one (allways Gti), untill i bought my 3Dr black GTTDI 150Bhp, i bought the 02 plate car at a year old and still have it, economy has been great and reliabilty has been excellent. i can definetly recomend parting with your cash for a GT TDI.with the poor weather i get in scotland i would also stay away from Black unless you have time every couple of days to wash and dry it.

Do want it in black or dark blue but like I said I do high mileage so might reconsider

I actually work right beside Killie in a village called Newmilns Dub80Y

Thinking about getting the 130 and then mapping it...
Heard the 130/150 have a higher rated clutch so it would be able to cope

Is it true mapping it can increase performance AND economy?
What kind of increase on mpg we talking (book says it'll do comb 53mpg)

standard clutch can take about 270-280lbs ft torque but it is expensive to replace with an uprated one - mine cost approx £900!

remap can improve economy though with the extra power its very rare you'll see it  but the beauty is the extra power won't affect economy unles you have a very heavy right foot

As above, great cars and still good fun despite being diesel.

Went to see a couple yesterday...

Both had problems around the boot lock & handle (bubbling/rust)
Is this a common problem or just coincidence?

sadly a common problem - its a trap for dust, salt and grime and also water can collect in the handle and rust it

nice move darchi, been the same as you, once you get one you just dont know what to replace it with when the day comes,

Easton, if you get your paws on a good one and are working in newmilns, if you need any advice or work done take it to McMinn motors in umberley road kilmarnock, Top Guy knows the Vw's like the back of his hand (any model) I live in Hurlford and its only ten minutes drive from there..Absolutely cracking workmanship and knowlewdge, really honest and reliable with veedub enthuasiasm 100%.

hi matee,i brought a gt-tdi130 pd last oct,i paid £8500,she'd done 61.167mls the day i got her,i had it re-mapped and just drove it..got to 90.000mls back in june,so de-catted it,put a stainless exhaust on,k&n filter, strut brace and coilovers and had it re-mapped again.she now done 103500mls!!a year on! she strong as ever,no smoke,no knocks or bangs and it's had 45k of thrash!!! absoloutly fantastic,by far the best car i ever had,
you will never look back if you get one, mine pulls 150mph,video to prove, but no matter how hard i drive i cant get the average fuel consumption lower that 36.2mpg!!

hi matee, well what can i say,buy a gt-tdi pd and it will be the best thing you'v eva done.
i brought a gt-tdi 130pd last october,it had done 61k.i had it re-mapped,but could still tell it had more to give.they re-mappped it again, this time we did alot of driving around playing with the 2nd torque limiter to avoid clutch slip.i ran iit like this for 30k,she didnt miss a beat, would pull to 145mph but average 42-46mpg.only maintanance was service and cam-belt.
then last month i decided that now she done 100k i'l treat it..so on when a stainless exhuast,de-catted,k&n induction.mapped it again, she pulls 150mph(vids to prove) and im averaging 38.1mpg.but im av been driving it hard since lol and she's coming up to 104k!!!!
i am the 2nd owner and i know this car is still on the original clutch!!just waiting to get it in the rolling road,we'r expecting 200+bhp.soon as she bin on rolling road i'l try and put the printout up so people can see i aint chatting sh!te!!then will follow frattelli 520+ injectors, frontmount intercooler, and the next size up in the garrett variablevein range,bm330D turbo some reinforce pipework and she should be good for 270-280bhp
GT-TDI's are a bargain at the min,buy one now and catch the pd bug,and watch the deisel tuning scene become huge!!
there fast enough, quite enough, such a smooth engine, lets so the petrols the way foward.power, torque and economy!

Ok so went to see a GT TDI 150 at weekend
Needs a few things done and just looking for some confirmation on what you all think they'll cost

*Front grill is broken -he says ill pick one up off ebay for bout £20 and they're easy to fit
*One lamp washer flap is missing the other doesn't sit flush -he says v easy fix
*Management light is showing on dash -he's got a printout saying its the wheel sensor and its £18 (how much will labour be?)
*Leather on drivers bolster is totally worn -says he's been quoted £80 to fix
*Finally oil service light is on -we didn't really discuss that but he says it had a service a few months ago (should this not have been seen to then?)

Has anyone had similar problems or knows how much these cost to put right?

I'm not letting this put me off at the moment because he's willing to swap with the celica and also willing to put towards putting some of it right
Plus we went out a run in it and it pulled like a train

Tell him to fix it all and give you a call when it's all done and showing no fault codes.

If everything is so easy and cheap to fix why doesn't he fix it all and sell the car for more?
If you think its pulls like a train now wait till you get it remappped!!!!

Just an update...
Still been looking for car on and off since starting this topic
Went to see a 130 today and agreed a trade with dealer

Just waiting for him to sort an issue with lock on boot
(Locks jammed in open position so even after remote locking boot can be opened)
However he assures me it'll be sorted before the swap so hopefully i'll be joining the club by the weekend
