Title: Mk5 Carbonfibre VW Badges - GroupBuy....
Post by: RedRobin on 16 October 2008, 22:15
....

Okay, the latest is that regardless of meeting the previously required minimum quantity, Carbon Dynamics in USA via TTshop here will offer the same reduced unit cost.

To remind those interested:

FRONT (F):

The stock front badge consists of a plastic core and a bonded silver VW emblem which can't be separated.

To replace the whole with a CF one, pay £58 and send TTshop your stock one. Stock ones (cores) are needed for CF covering. OR keep your stock one and pay £29 extra.

REAR (R):

The stock rear assembly consists of a locking mechanism and a removable siver VW emblem.

You won't want to remove the whole lock unit and be without it, so very carefully remove the VW emblem without bending it and send to TTshop. It will cost you £58 to replace it with a carbon one.

So,

Front costs either £58 or £58+£16=£74

Rear costs £58

Front+Rear costs either£116 or £116+£16=£132

All costs include shipping and taxes, providing we can coordinate all the returnables to CarbonDynamics via TTshop in one shipping.

PLEASE NOTE: That final delivery may take time - Handmade manufacture and shipping are the main factors.

---------------

I'll be closing this list on Sunday evening 2nd November. I'll then confirm orders with each individually. Deposits etc will need to go direct to TTshop and I'll post details.

1. cookiemonster - F & R
2. Hurdy - F & R
3. Manu - F & R
4. SteveP - F & R
5. Greenouse - F & R
6. rugbymad - F & R
7. Merlinman - F

Count me in RR - I've got a huge list of mods just waiting to happen but my hands are tied at the moment because  I am STILL trying to sort the insurance claim out after I was hit in April and I might be living in Qatar for a while come December/January

The front silver embled can be seperated - bit fiddly and you have to be careful but it can be done.

I thought a new front complete badge was only around £12 ..?

Also a note for older cars - this is only if your rear badge is the newer style - not flush type.

Confirmed Robin - I think I'll now get a 'donor' badge at my dealers (Parts Mgr. is a chum) - so just the front CF badge for me - oh, and many thanks for all your efforts on this one

What's the next step?

BTW, Golf GTi Grille Badge = V1T0 853 601 AF DY T110 = £12.26 + vat

(Edited to include OE Badge details)

Im still in for both Robin, but again will supply a new badge from the stealers. And yes I agree with Neg that the front can definitely be seperated as I did this to mine for painting

Oh and thanks for doing this Robin as you already have yours  Most appreciated

....

I've just called the TTshop and Justin, who knows all the details, is away til Monday but I'll pre-empt with an email querying the £29 front badge question.

Personally I think it would be much easier to buy an extra £12 VW front badge here and send it via TTshop for carbon wrapping, and then, one day when you sell your VW you can swop the badge back and keep the carbon one as a VeeDub momento.

When this list seems to look settled in the next couple of weeks, I'll post what (returnable) deposit should be sent TTshop and address details for any parts. I'll also contact Charles at CD direct to double check details.

P.S.- Thanks for making this a Sticky without being asked :afro:

So were talking having the compete removable section wrapped not just the silver emblem?

I managed to break one of the clips when removing my original so I think I'll be up for this and will supply a new one also.

Definitely count me in for both front and rear badges.

I'd like to keep my original silver ones though therefore I am willing to pay extra.

Whoops - just front as I have the smoothed rear badge so I expect to replace with the newer style would be quite expensive.  + I like the smoothed one

Thanks for putting in the time and effort for us all RR

Once the rear badge comes off I'll be painting the background section reflex silver to match the car colour

White background to the rear Carbon fibre badge on a white car would look the nuts

Good work RR.

Can I just get something cleared up regarding the rear badge?  That is you have to supply the rear chrome plastic piece as the replacement from the VW dealers is only available with the whole lock mechanism?

My understanding is it's only the front that is available at a reasonable price so that it is practical to purchase a new one rather than suppling the existing?

Also will TT shop / Carbon Dynamics accept badges that have been painted?

Thanks,

Steve

Hi all, I'm new to this forum but would I be able to join in the group buy?
I live in Jersey in the Channel Islands (its still part of the UK), would that be a problem?
If anyone thinks thats a problem I'll try speaking to TTShop direct and see if they can get parts to me over here!

Thanks all

Andy

There should be no reason why you can't get in on this group buy so just put your name on the list and see if RR pulls it off.

Thanks Bacillus,

RR, I'd like the front and the rear please, and I'd rather pay the extra and not supply a silver badge. I'm a little unsure about the rear badge however, I've got an '05 gti and the rear badge looks the same as the pic on the Carbon Dynamics website (I wasn't aware that there was a different design of rear as indicated in an earlier post?)

Thanks

Andy

....Shouldn't be a problem shipping to Jersey within the costs already given but I'll double check tomorrow - also the question about rear badge.

I'll then add your name to the list in the first post accordingly.

....

Some answers to the quezzies : -

- Shipping to Jersey included as same as to mainland UK.

- Stock VW Front badge price - Was stated as £29 because it is the cost in the USA. Cost in UK is £14.68 (incl vat) so new price will be £16 to cover shipping UK>USA. Otherwise, please supply your own Front badge to TTshop in due course.

- Carbon wrapping a painted VW badge is no problem.

- The smooth low-relief Rear badges aren't suitable for carbon wrapping (as Charles/CD already pointed out).

- It isn't a good idea to send the whole Rear lock mechansim to USA via TTshop because of the significant weight and shipping such weight has not been allowed for. So please carefully remove rear logo component.

HTH. We are nearly there!!

....My pleasure, mate :afro: - It feels good to be able to help others out (even if very frustrating at times!!) - We all try and help each other. The aim is always to achieve a Win-Win situation where no-one is screwing someone else. TTshop make a small profit but it leads to additional business, the original maker Carbon Dynamics survives to offer more, we get a cool product. The people I resent are the Customs tax grabbers who do feck all for their gain and also delay everything, but you just have to accept it and "don't let the basstards grind you down" (as U2's Bono says).

Anyroadup, people are always helping me out and it's my way of giving back or passing it on.

Jeeze, I sometimes wonder what I'd get given if I had a nice female cleavage!!

....I haven't asked but I expect that TTshop will do all they can to stick to their quoted prices. The normal practice on quotes is that they hold for 30 days. They are well aware that this isn't a cheap item and we have all the added costs of shipping to and from America - I know them personally well enough to know that they are just trying to be fair.

You can't buy just the rear emblem badge as VW doesn't sell it without the latch mechanism. You will have to use your own badge or one from scrap.

....Wherever the whole latch comes from, you will need to carefully remove the VW silver badge part.

And also it needs to be the higher relief version - I'll post a pic later but am under orders from my 17yo SWMBO daughter to cook dinner now!

Ok, no worries.

I know it's a raised version rear badge, late 06 car, so that's not a problem. I'll take a look tomorrow as to how to remove it, how do they come off by the way?

I might change to the front badge only - I'm not mechanically minded and am rather heavy handed and the last thing I want to do is break it..

....Concealed razor blades is the first thing that comes to mind but mine isn't removable without taking the car's whole front off!

Some people have reported that their front badges can be easily removed but mine couldn't. I would suggest a strong sealer at the back or adding something to stop it being able to twist.

I thought this worth mentioning,

Having got the rear badge from both Markymarks and mine in my grubby mitt's I can tell you they are different

Basically there are a lot more prongs on the back of Marks than mine and as such it would not fit onto my handle as there are not enough hole's on it.

If someone were to get someone else's returned it may not fit

Any suggestions Robin?

I've emailed TTshop this morning as follows:

Please check out what's posted on the forum : - http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=95098.110  [page 12]

The stock badges (cores) you are being sent have differences and so each badge you receive needs marking so the same carbon covered one returns to its owner. Otherwise the final product the customer receives from you may not fit back on his car.

Cheers,
Robin

Just got this reply : -

"Hi Robin

If everyone can make sure that they include a covering letter in with
their badges so we can identify who's is who's and also write the
correct part number of their badge on the covering letter.

Also those that are not wanting to supply a badge I will need somehow
their chasis or even better the part number off their original.

Am I right in saying we are talking about the front badge?"

It's the rear emblems that were found to vary with the number and positioning of the rear clips.

I've phoned Justing this morning and he says that the people supplying their badges will obviously be fine with fitment. For those not supplying their badge he says he can only get the newer Edition 30 style badge. Neither of us knew for sure how many variations of the rear badge there are, but the Edition 30 one is already on revision D

What Justin has said is that he is willing to supply the rear lock mechanism for those who have problems with re-fitting their badges and so everyone should eventually get a badge that fits

So don't worry guys

What Justin has said is that he is willing to supply the rear lock mechanism for those who have problems with re-fitting their badges and so everyone should eventually get a badge that fits

Does that mean you will have to pay an additional £70 or so for the mechanism if the fitment is incorrect as I somehow doubt that the TTShop will absorb £70 for the rear lock mechanism on badges worth £58.

Title: Re: Mk5 Carbonfibre VW Badges - GroupBuy....
Post by: Hurdy on 26 November 2008, 11:30
Justin said he'd be willing to sort something out between individuals. If you want to give him a bell yourself I'm sure he would let you know details. I think he is hoping that everything goes smoothly and no-one will need the mechanisms.
Title: Re: Mk5 Carbonfibre VW Badges - GroupBuy....
Post by: JerseyAndy on 26 November 2008, 15:07
Just to clarify, are we all in agreement that its only the rear badges that vary and the fronts are the same regardless of age and GTI or ED30?

I was under the impression that we all had to supply the rears anyway because TT couldn't source just the 'chrome VW'? Therefore no one should be needing to get a new rear supplied anyway, thus avoiding any problems... assuming we all label them as our own! Or am I just in a confused mess? (Entirely possible!)

....The fact that it's on both suggests to me that it's a reflection.

Lol, nice way to greet a new member! He isn't writing a formal letter!

Unfortuately Chrissy, you've missed the group buy on here.

As bacillus says - carbondynamics are a good company to use.

Do a quick search, there have been a number of people on here that have explored other ways/companies of achieving the same result.

IMO the emblems really need to be viewed in real life on a car to fully appreciate their novelty and beauty. Then again, beauty is in the eye of the beholder. ETTO

Your best bet is to urgently phone Justin at TTshop 01234 855 555. You can't buy direct from CarbonDynamics in the UK anyway AFAIK.

wow erm.. looks good, i suppose the factual point would be it saves weight which is more of importance then looks.

i would of left the center section of the hood carbon and not of painted it red but still i really like your car rr..

would be interesting to see when/if you fit some new alloys??

as ive noticed you had your standard monzas on ever since i saw your car.

ive just purchased some, after having 4 dif sets of rims i still think the mozas fit the gti the best.

I think I should have paid £116 instead of the £132 that they charged me as I supplied both the front and rear cores. Will call them tomorrow and find out, I'm sure it's just a clerical error.

Dont wanna sound like a noob or anything but im flying home tomorrow so will be taking my badges with me! :D

Just a quick question...are they easy to fit? This is what they sent me.

Front Badge

Rear Badge

Boot Handle

Do i need to change the boot handle with the one thats currently on my car or would i just be able to change the badges...can see having to change the handle will be quite a mission!
