Heylo there!
Does anyone know the original MPG for the 1991 MK2?
And does anyone know roughly how much it would do now?
Its a 1991, H reg 1.3. Done 125000 miles?
Just bored at work and wondering!
-
no sorry, but get yourself some kiwi boot polish for the bumpers and trim! Works wonders and its pretty cheap too
Sorry thats wasnt particularly helpful for your question
-
Kiwi boot polish! Cheers! Where from? Any ideas?
-
You're probably looking at late 20s to early 30s MPG wise. Original figures are hard to come buy. There's been a lot of threads on it and there's been a lot of variation. It depends on how healthy the engine is and how well set up it is.

A shop like Asda, doesn't have to be Kiwi either I used own brand stuff and it was even cheaper and worked fine!!
-
I love you car by the way Kittie, such a bright Vibrant red!
You got any pics of the interior??
-
i just been out in mine and from me changing all the vacum hose's the mpg has gone from 12.5 to 39 whoop whoop
-
Wow, I've only had mine a couple of weeks and I'm not brilliant with cars but I'm gonna learn!!
Wanna make her cheap to run lol!
Cheap and easy is the key!

It doesn't look like that at the moment, I've been lazy :lipsrsealed:
I always wash it using the two bucket method and a wool mitt, shammy it then use Auto Glym paint renovator on the worst bits of pink (roof and bonnet mainly) , followed AG super resin polish all over, followed by meguairs gold class wax. And I use shoe polish followed by AG bumper care on the black bits - comes up looking sweet as
It takes like, 7 hours though
Cleaned my wheels the other day and that took nearly 2 hours with a toothbrush and some acid wheel cleaner! Bloody BBS!
-
Woah I think Im gonna have to write that one down!
I washed mine, then Turtle waxed it all over, its a start because as you can see on the pic, it looked like it had never been cleaned or waxed!
I might need to clean with some major detail though, ie under my bonnet I don't even wanna disclose lol.
Dya know whats best to clean the engine and under the bonnet generally?
-
With a 1.3 I'd say you should be getting in the 30's with a well setup engine.
My 1.6 gets about 30mpg atm and about 36mpg with redex
Black boot polish FTW
Try T-cut to bring back the red.
You get engine degreaser to clean under the bonnet. Once you've clean it up get heat resistant paint and paint the engine up.
-
Yea cheers! Don't really wanna spend lots on the actual engine coz wanna get a bigger one in there when my insurance drops but thanks for the tips guys!!
-
i would have thought 40's tbh, if im getting 32ish from a 2.0l 16v!
-
1.6 Driver = 27-31
1.8 Digi = 29.5-37.5
1.8 16v = 26.2-33.9
Woked the Digi and Valver out by the MFA over 10 weeks each and above is the worst to the best. Worked the Driver out by ££ and miles! The 1.6 Driver being the worst on fuel IMO..... also the Driver being the slowest!
-
im getting around 25 sensible driving ATM  in ym 1.3.. wtf!
-
Whats the best way for me to work this out? I can try and let you know what Im getting and then see if you knowlagable guys can help me make it better!
-
Sorry but that rubbish! Not that I dont believe you, but that I get 35+ out of my gti 8v, and you cant get close with a 1.6!
Harsh, but I had to go through it when I was 17 with my 1.3 mk2!
-
on my 1.6 driver im not really sure but on a k-jey gti 8v ive had mine up to 39.1 and lowest after a good, fast run, about 26.0
but i do think its roughly the same though as the amount off petrol ive put in isnt too different
-
dont take the mpg from the mfa, it aint exactly accurate!
whats the capacity of the fuel tank in a mk2?

i get 35mpg and more depends how i drive my 16v i bought a 54 pug 307 sw 1600 last year and i have took that of the road because my 89 golf 16v is cheaper to run onece its taxed of course lol (99.00) 6 months and the pug just (46.00) lol and the emishons was alot lower on my golf lol
-
when trying i can get 47 mpg, normal driveing it's more like 40mpg when doing a roads and motorway. or it drops to about 6mpg when find a nice road and have a play
-
Tanks hold 55 litres + a little up the fuel neck.
-
in my 1.6 i got 34mpg on motorway driving at 60/70 and 80 once to overtake. But pushing it i get in the 10s

Nope, not without a little help from Redex  Unfortunately they're carbs and not very efficient :undecided:
Oh well... 1 month then my insurance goes down to about £28 p/m from £60 Then I can thinking about doing other things  and hopefully (fingers crossed) I get a pay rise/bonus in December

I feel your pain
I used about 3/4 tank getting to Birmingham which is only 2 hours away, doing slightly more than the speed limit  :embarassed:

i used 1/4 of a tank in 40 miles lol. i was doing 90-100 on the "private" road though.

I was doing slightly more than 100 on a private road and B'ham is only 80 odd miles from me... I won't be doing that again in a hurry!

yup
worked that out on the ring trip. got 40 mpg on the way back to the uk and we had quite a good pace on most of the way and a bit of a stomp towards the end as we were thinking we were late for boat ( but hadent adjusted clock oops ) 47 was one the way out there and most of the way back when in uk as misplaced wallet under seat and chouldn't be arsed looking for it also lots of speedy camera sings on roads i din't know so was pooteling anyway
-
I use Jizer (degreaser) and a bog brush to clean the engine bay. But usually I go for the 'keep the bonnet closed and it'll go away' method!!!
To work out MPGs I usually brim the tank, reset the trip miles, then next time I fill up I brim it again and look at how many miles are on the trip counter.
So you know how far you've gone and (if you remembered to keep the receipt from the garage!) you'll know how many litres that used. Then (because I'm a maths tard) I search for 'MPG calculator' on Google UK (I believe US gallons are different to UK ones? Anyone confirm this??) and that'll work it all out for you!
-
US gallons are different to UK gallons

I also use this one as it is meant for calculating mpg for us UK'ers
