Just waiting for comments about open vents and airflow :afro:
-
Looks very tidy now :afro:. I see you've still got the driving light monkey too!
-
....Cheers!
Yes, I love those monkeys - Very good safety feature in my opinion - No dazzle but easily visible. [Not me driving and gesticulating I hasten to add!]

....I'll post some better pics of it when I can :afro:
-
Glad to see that shes back in order.
-
Looking forward to more pics of this...looks good
-
i thought you already had the cf mid section??
-
....I had an earlier version, Joe
Apart from the obvious benefit of improved power-to-weight ratio, she now has a downforce which surpasses a F1 car!
-
As ever, your car always looks the mutts nuts Robin, and I think I've always said I like the "look" of your car!
But do I notice that the drivers side of your bonnet is sitting a tad high?

But do I notice that the drivers side of your bonnet is sitting a tad high?
its like Rocky Vs Apollo Creed, ive lost count what round we are upto now between you 2!
-
hurdy had the problem with his cf bonnet, cant remember what he did now to mend it :undecided:
-
agree with TT about red's wagon, he just needs to get those alloys sorted, because it does spoil the look of his car when your stood next to it.
Perhaps one day when after he's finished Buying OSIR stuff and keeping them in business, he might, just might get the alloys sorted!.
I wish i was able to splash the cash on things for mine, but family has to come 1st..
That New splitter Robin looks stunning mate. Top effort

....Yes, T_T and I do spar occasionally but underneath it all, we do like and respect each other (so I keep telling myself!). We probably have similar personalities in some respects (both Aries!) and so can clash and get the antlers out.

....Apart from my trip up North (Midlands!) to Revo and TTshop yesterday, I also visited Pristine to see samples of alloy shades to powdercoat my Monza 18's. So, after I've paid for my Quaife, my alloys will be next (I think!). A nice 433 mile blast.
-
Dam you robin, i wish i could just do a 400 mile trip to Disneyland like you do!!. All just to spoil phylis!. Im very jelous mate. Looking foward to the Rolling Road in a fourtnight or so.

Huh, WTF? :undecided:

....I think there's something wrong with me - If i only do about 20-30 miles in a week, I begin to feel almost physical withdrawal symptoms and just have to find an excuse for a trip. Portchester lunch meet Saturday if you are free.
Have just shot some more front splitter pics and will post shortly.
-
hurdy had the problem with his cf bonnet, cant remember what he did now to mend it :undecided:
Hurdy had to adjust is actual catch in the slam panel, whereas with Robins, I think just a tweak of the rubber buffers on the drivers side might do the trick.

Nice as the pics are, can you guys (notably TT ) not resize your photos so that when viewing you don't have to scroll horizontally to see the full pic?

Its more fun scrolling with piccies you can pretend your 5 and make the car go forward and back. :embarassed: :embarassed:

....I'm sorry - I didn't know this was happening but I've got a 1920 x 1200 display so the pic width isn't even half the screen! [he said very smugly :smug:]
So, should I be posting pics at smaller sizes?

RR post's lots of pics of his car which we all like to see. but i was blown away a couple of weeks back when horney posted some pics of Reds car, up to that point i never realised just how nice his car was.Reds own pics dont do his car justice.
As for resizing about the same size as that spliff in your sig should be about right.
-
Love those big brakes! Prefer those to Hurdy's too, a better red colour!
How come you have no VW badges on the inside of your alloys?!
i saw this on a car in the car photo stickey thread near the start and thought they had simply lost them but im guessing not! Why would you do such a thing!? lol

looking  Robin

....I just haven't been able to sort out my camera. It's a Fuji FinePix F11 and really shouldn't be showing the pink (except when shooting porn!). If I can't sort it out soon I'll be px-ing it for a different one! I shouldn't have to resort to Photoshop to try (unsuccessfully) to sort out every pic of my car.

....Loss....Fed up of replacement costs....White worm corrosion....So I removed them!! Ideally I'd like some BBS caps or CF ones but can't find any which fit.

....She's next up in the air next week at VW Racing (at last!!!!) so I'll shoot some then. If I lie on my back on the floor will that be the shot you want to see? Anything in particular?
You can just about make out the two intake slots under the gearbox(?) on the passenger side in the pic I posted.
I was half expecting you to say that what I've done is a bad idea in terms of air flow - Not too late for you to still say so! The side 'slots' feed fairly directly towards the brakes btw - My internal front wheel arch linings have big openings (as OEM and not homemade).

loving that bottom valance on the front .. where did you get that from ? costly?????
cars looking good.

....Thanks.
Everything carbonfibre can be described as costly. It's by OSIR and exclusively available from the TTshop.

You should Charge TTshop for the ammount of plugs they get on here from you robin!!!

....Well they do appreciate it and look after me ;). But, as they are sole Euro resellers for a number of items, it's naturally where I point people who ask where they can get it from.

But, yes, everyone's response to this splitter mod has been particularly positive so far (also on Biali Motorsport's forum). I had only seen a pic on OSIR's web site and wasn't sure but it looks right in the flesh. Purposeful without looking 'max-power'. I'm hoping it will actually contribute to the air flow to the gearbox area but T_T is the one to comment on that aspect. Perhaps his silence so far on this question may be "Well, Robin, I don't know how to tell you this, but you've just done the worst mod possible". But knowing T_T I'm glad to say he's very honest in his opinions whether you like it or not.

Yup, thats the exact shot. :afro: Just make sure Quaife stuck the right one in the box this time before you start your journey!

Yes, they are specifically what I'm interested in. The later GTIs seem to have a slightly different design for those vents, though it could simply down to the camera angle playing tricks on the eye.
I was half expecting you to say that what I've done is a bad idea in terms of air flow - Not too late for you to still say so! The side 'slots' feed fairly directly towards the brakes btw
I've said my "piece" on that particular issue!  But seriously, I'll have another gander at your pics (can't see 'em as I'm typing this ), and let you know.
My internal front wheel arch linings have big openings (as OEM and not homemade).
:afro:
Ohhh, can we have pics of those too? What model year is yours (just the 10th digit of the VIN)? <fx/on> fires up parts catalogue for a gander <fx/off>
-
OK, had another look at the image of the underside.
For the two outer vents (under the fog lamps), I reckon they are fine, and should direct airflow to the brake ducts. Though if I were being really pedantic, maybe some turning vanes inside those (behind the outer mesh), so that the airflow is positively directed out towards the brake ducts.
Regarding the centre carbon diffuser - it looks the mutts nuts. :afro: However, I am a little concerned that it is taking too much air away from the lower centre grille (which is vital for the intercooler and coolant rads). Yes, it is sending air (and a lot of air) under the bumper (which may help reduce overall drag, and give a small increase in top speed), but looking at the image, it actually looks as if it is angled down towards the tarmac. So the majority of the airflow from that will be going straight under the car, and most will miss the ducts for the DSG. Some air will still get into the DSG ducts, but because of the angle of the carbon bit, air entering the ducts will have lots of vortices. So, personally, I would try to angle the carbon splitter upwards, or even try to narrow the overall height of the gap between it and the lower edge of the bumper. :nerd:

T_T....
....I'll take lots of pics of her soft underbelly for you next week.
....On her Birth Certificate her 10th digit of VIN is 6 (last but one and starting from 1K) and Mother Wolfsburg went into labour July 11th 2005 and she was delivered naturally 4th August, and stated as "06 Build".
....I'm not having any brake problems so won't bother to fabricate any turning vanes unless needed.
....Yes that OSIR centre diffuser is angled slightly downwards and its construction in CF doesn't allow any revisions. However, quite coincidentally the diffuser I replaced it with (OSIR's first version) directed air even lower and I arrived at Revo HQ after a spirited three-and-a-half hour drive (hot car) and after a coffee break we went out with a laptop and Revo remarked on how cool my temperatures were running (mild weather day before yesterday) after a long drive.
The best I could do is attach a 'rear wing' changing the back angle upwards and it would be out of sight but I'm not sure it's really needed. Also, my next mod may be the S3 intercooler, though I appreciate that's slightly off on a tangent.
Here's a pic of my version 1 OSIR diffuser (which also shows that pair of gearbox slots better - To the DSG) : -

I was going to say have you grounded it already - but then I realised it was V1 ? :)

Very witty - made me LOL.
I've had a shufty on the parts catalogue, and can't find any change to the undertray, and I can't find any part numbers for vented arch liners. So that usually means that any former parts which have been subsequently changed are now no longer available, and have been positively superceeded. I'd be interested if you are able to find the part numbers stamped onto the undertray and vented arch liners - because once you know them, you can still do a manual look-up in the catalogue.
....I'm not having any brake problems so won't bother to fabricate any turning vanes unless needed.
But haven't you only recently put the "Mk2" lower lip on? :undecided: Maybe the orginal CF lip was fine, but the new one may be slightly different? :undecided:

In pure aerodynamic terms, I think the original CF lip was the better, though your latest one does look the better.

T_T....
....I'll do my best to see any part numbers for you. Any clues whereabouts to look? VWR might know.
....It's only the central CF 'diffuser' component which I've changed from v1 to v2 - Not the 'side-vents-with-fine-wire-grill' (painted) which 'vaguely' vent air to the brake wheel arch spaces - Assuming I've understood you correctly! In other words the parts I think you were suggesting adding turning vanes to haven't been changed.
....Yes, it's Aerodynamics vs Aesthetics! As long as the aero isn't seriously compromised I'm inclined to favour the aesthetic. But that's why I value your input/opinions - to establish whether I still fancy the pretty girl over the less pretty one who cooks better! But the pretty girl is a waste of time if she gives you food poisoning! [How did you say you got that stomach bug?]
I think that in the context of the GTI and my fast road use as opposed to competitive track use, the compromises appear to be relatively minor. At least the Revo laptop data had some science in it - If everything is keeping cool enough and I'm not experiencing handling problems or spiralling into the hedge, then it's okay with me.
Following your advice to check the state of the DSG oil with VW Racing, that'll also be helpful information.
[Sorry I haven't laid my response out in a more directly integrated fashion (like you do) but I've got a major gig tonight - Being opened by the town Mayor and I'm solo-ing the start! Soundchecks etc need doing soon! Must dash]
Thanks for all your input - Always appreciated even if challenging (don't mention the war or open fog grills!)
Cheers mate :afro:

The undertray is fairly easy to find the part number (and presumably that will be comming off to fit the diff). The wheel arch liner part numbers are on the rear sides, and unless these have to come out (I actually think they will, to access the gearbox mount), you wont be able to see them.

Yes, inside the two outer side vents, on the red painted lower - if you want to do them. When it is up on the ramp, you should clearly see the ducts for the brakes - so even some basic vanes angled in that rough direction should be a big improvement.

Ha ha. You remember when Bill Clinton actually asked Monica Lewinski to go and "sack his cook"!
And it was my pills ruining the lining of my stomach and intestines!

I fully agree. But just to throw another tiny spanner in the proverbal works - don't you go down to Munich, and hot parts of Europe? Maybe when it is hotter down there (compared to chilly old Blighty), then maybe that might be another point to consider.
Following your advice to check the state of the DSG oil with VW Racing, that'll also be helpful information.
Good idea. Before opening the box to fit the Quaife, try to get them to drain it into an old (but clean) kitchen sink bowl, and then carefully look for any kind of impurities. Also check the filter too.
