Title: anyone see Fifth Gear tonight?
Post by: 2007GTI on 15 September 2008, 22:12
after the review of the scirocco they said that the GTI is now obsolete! I.e why would you buy one now when the scirocco is priced so closely. Cheeky fu€ks!  :undecided:

Because it is a different car IMO.. Have you sat in the Scirocco yet? Very cramped for a start..
Much prefer the looks of mine too..

Well that's good ole Fifth Gear for you - all a bunch of Max Power rejects - even that floosy "Vicky Bollox Henderson".  What anyone sees in that slapper is beyond me!

I took a look at the Scirrocco earlier today and I must say that it does look very cramped inside, absolutely no good for 'family man' (which is me  :embarassed:) whereas the Golf can fit that requirement more readily.

Have actually fallen for the new Passat CC but I'm not sure if I'm old enough to have one

....I'm old enough for the Passat CC and it is a very elegant car. I've also test driven the Scirocco - Review+25pics : - http://biali.ritey.com/forum/index.php?topic=109.0 (http://biali.ritey.com/forum/index.php?topic=109.0)

But, do you know what? - I prefer the GTI as it's a much better allrounder imo.

But sadly, isn't the Mk V obsolete if the dealers aren't taking any more orders :embarassed:

"Only a fool would buy a 3 door Gti"

I had such a laugh when I heard him say that. Typical fifth gear rubbish instantly dismissing how good the GTI is. Scirocco is a lovely car and I agree it does feel cramped but the cars both fulfill different needs, especially practicality wise.

There is place for a scirocco GTI / .:R variant (should they make one) and a Golf GTI. It's nice to have the option of both. But to suggest you are a fool to buy a GTI it just ridiculous.

You will have to wait if you want to fit aftermarket wheels to the new scirroco.
From what I can see the hub fitting for the wheels is 5x125 pcd, very helpfull?

once they were saying different things....

well, I better be a fool with 3door GTI, but at least I stand by what I say.

Really, these programs are pure entertainment, and no informational content.
I stopped watching TV long ago. The only thing I'd watch is some crazy stunt by Top Gear fools.

The scirocco is a lovely car, but it is for single people, the practability of the golf best suits your average person, the boot looks tiny

hmmm, i could never buy the scirocco for work....

i mean just look at the sales of the old golf vs old scirocco, still basically the same style..

I love the querky looks of the new scirroco, as for it being to small thats alright for me i pull a face if mrs top cat wants to get in the gti me being so anal so its not a prob for me.
I will only swap the gti for one though if a 2.0 R version becomes available.
My name will be first on the list.

Golfs have always held there values better than the scirroccos, I guess coz this is new there will be lots of hype, give it a Year or two and they will praise the Golf again.

....Having test driven and photographed the new Scirocco, I was astonished by just how much wide-angle lens filming they did of it on the prog - They made it look more elegant than it is in real life. It's a good car but it won't win any beauty parades imo - Bulbous and too Peugeot-like from some angles.

I can see what they were trying to say in comparing it with the 3-door GTI, but it's simply not true - The 'Rocco boot is tiny and steps up, and at exactly 6ft 0ins my head just touches the roof in the very claustrophobic back and you couldn't possibly seat 3 in the back.

It's best described as a GTI Golf Coupe but the 3-door GTI is still a better allrounder. It would need to be modified to be more exciting in my opinion - Lower it, Milltek it, Revo it.

yes, my local dealer has anyway. I used to work there and was told so by the guys I know. They were told directly by VW no more orders for GTI. Thats a dealer here in N Ireland anyway. They reckon VW have stopped GTI orders to try push on sales of the scirocco. I feel even happier now to have my own GTI :)

....So, if it hasn't already been said, 'previously used' Mk5 GTI's purchase prices may hold well, although perhaps not in the current economic climate. We'll have to wait for all the knee-jerking to subside - It always does! It's cyclic.

Stay cool and don't panic with the sheep. :afro:

No they aint!  The new Rocco wheels are 5/112 - so identical to the Mk5 Golf - on which the new Rocco is built!

back to the 5th gear bashing

why do you think they keep messing about with the format/presenters

of course because it's mince

I sky+ it, watch any new interesting cars and fastforward the rest

since i'm a 3 door GTi owner, I laughed at the comments and though what a load of bollox
the 3 door Gti didn't become undesirable over night and is still a looker IMO and if the rocco was made by anybody else but looked exactly the same do you think they'd still make those ridiculous statements

I allways preffered the golfs to all the Scirrocos including the present one that just doesn't look like a VW to me, it looks like a FIAT . I mean is a coupe just a hatchback with a crap boot and no headroom for rear occupants

I just wish they'd stop saying its only £90 more,

when you spec up the Scirocco to the same spec as the GTI inc free leather and then add in the discount you can get for the GTI,

it ends up being about £3k plus more which is a fair whack.

Exactly.

And it is considerably less practical than the GTI.  The two cars are aimed at very different markets, so to compare the two directly is a big no-no, and simply shows how far FG has to stoop in their journalistic endeavours!

Plus it seems fairly pointless comparing the Scirocco against a car that they surely know is soon to be replaced!
