Is it possible to have the dealer tints carried out at the dealer or are these a factory fitted option??? If this is not the case which is the best type of tint? I know you can have the glass coated or even a film though I have seen some film jobs that simply look horrendous.
-
It is a factory fitted option. I know what you mean I've seen some aftermarket ones full of bubbles and a nasty line around the outside.
-
with factory tints i think im correct in saying it is the glass itself that is tinted and lasts the life of the car.

Yes thats correct.
I saw black MK5 GTI this morning with film tints and all you could see was a big white line around the rear screen

only if the person who tinted it was a muppet. my friend tints windows for a living and uses film. getting mine done next month, and its still costing me 100pounds with discount!!

any decent tinter should do just as good a job as the factory,
-
i dont know any :(
-
just google your area and window tinting, then do a little research on the company you choose. try and get some reviews.
-
Must say, the factory tints really look the part, seen a new GT @ the stealers with rear tints and really sets the car off.
-
had tints done to my 1st GTi and agree with tagnut, had a horrid white line around the rear screen, took it back and complained. Apparently because of the shape of the rear screen, you cannot get a good fit with the tint. i think i have a pic of the car with the tints.....................

I had carbon tints put on the front which stops UV sunlight and are still legal.
-
why you have dsg on the back :lipsrsealed:
-
Because i drive a manual?
-
If you really don't like the white boarder on the rear screen, and wanted to go the OEM route, then you could order a genuine rear tinted screen from your stealer for around £170, and then pay Autoglass or similar to swap it. 'Cause theres no doubt that the factory fit ones look soooo much better!
-
Does the tinting film also provide a layer of security - i.e. makes the window harder to smash through? Or is that a special kind of film altogether?
-
yes the glass wont fly everywhere if it brakes, holds it more in place .

mine has factory tints too, i much prefer it to having those daft white lines and dots you get with aftermarket stuff, and they look a little less pimp my ride

Sadly, OEM tints wern't available when we ordered our GIT, so at the mo, it has one of those roller mesh sunblinds in the rear window (proper VW accessory). It does its' job, but some might question its aesthetics, and it certainly ain't as good as the electric rear blind in my RS.
Does anyone have pics, or opinions on what the OEM tints look like on 5door Reflex silver GTIs? :undecided:

I think they look fine - what don't you like about them Tony?
Maybe on a dark-coloured car, the tints "blend in" with the colour of the paint work, and look less "obvious", whereas on lighter colours (Candy, Reflex), the tints are a bit more prominent or "in-yer-face", like on 182_blues, which do look much more obvious! ???
-
I think tonyh meant the pics weren't great rather than the tints
T_T - did you fit your blinds afterwards? How much were they?
I think they would be a good alternative to tints - esp if you have a baby in the back.
Any pics?
:nerd:
-
 yep, meant tints are good but my pics are not !
-
TT do you have a price for back and both sides on a 3door?? i know you have access to prices or something, doesnt matter if its too much hastle

For the green/black 3dr tints (fitted to PR 4KF) - prices (+VAT) rough ones - not got VWUK prices, and often they are less:
1K6 845 051 P - rear screen - £179
1K6 845 *** * rear sides - £83.50 each.
I'd need the VIN for the correct part numbers, 'cause theres a break in the middle of m/y 07.
Off now, catch ya later!
-
Bump!
TT - you can post the pics of your rear blinds now!
:nerd:

just rears at the moment
don't be a girl!
Do it like a real man in a real black car - 100% tint ALL around (including front).

Thanks.
OK, it may not be everyones cuppa, but it is cheap at £50, proper VW, and when you sell your car, you can bung it on the 'bay.

Sorry about some of the blurry pics - I was a bit under the weather that day!

Is that part still available TT?? That would be good for my ickle kiddies in the back. I havent seen that in the accesorys catalog before.

1K0 064 360 - It is still in the latest Golf 5 accessories pamphlet thingy.
-
cheers guv
-
I think that looks quite smart.
Can you also get that style of blind for the rear side windows too? I'm sur I've seen them somewhere...or was that just on a BMW? :undecided:

I'm shocked - thought everyone would think it was cack!

Yeah. On my RS, they are actually "built in" to the rear door cards. For the Golf, I've never seen them, and they were not in the accessories pamphlet, but you can get rollers for the sides too - 1K5 064 362. Now I cant work out if that part number is for a pair - though being as it begins "1K5" - that normally means a set of something (like a set of floor mats) - price around £70 I would guess.
-
Thanks for the info Sean.
