i have the bog standard rcd300, i cant see track listings or albums only thing i can do is bunch the albums into folders on itunes and access via cd1 cd2 etc, or listen to them all in cd6, complete waste of money as an option.

Hi there

I just bought an MFD2 from the people in the link that k4ith posted, have yet to fit the unit but it arrived well packaged & in mint condition, the guys there were really helpful & the unit comes with 12mths warranty too.  They did have some MFD3's not so long ago might be worth giving them a call.

Manual, codes & GPS antenna included (no disc but V2 maps pre-installed).

You'll have to contact Tommy for the price  Trust me he's cheap.

To start with I got very confused when I saw 182_blue asking the initial question but then I saw the date.

Anyway, yes that's one of the best prices I have seen for the RNS-510 on ebay, they was one up for sale a few weeks ago from a guy in the UK on Vwnavi for £800 i believe.

The guy who is selling this one is the same guy I got mine from.  Very helpful and trustful, IMO.  I paid slightly more for mine ~5 months ago and don't regret it one bit.

Does anyone know where i could see shots of it working i.e. the sat nav mainly as when I test drove a R32 it had the sat nav fitted but i wasnt very impressed with gui. I take it this is the newer version with touch screen???

How difficult is it to install/remove??

The phone function will only work with the latest VAG bluetooth as far as I'm aware (aka VrStu's bluetooth kit), with the standard wired phone prep it act's as a mute button.

They are a direct replacement for the MFD2 (and all standard headunits) but as per the pics from 182_blue you need to remove the vents above and the plastic trim around the face first then the headunit is held in place with four torx's screws.

Have a look in the maintenance section at the nokia car kit install, that shows the steps for tking the headunit out.

SteveP, does this update give audible warnings of the speed cameras or is it just the visible display. very cool, either way.

Got my RNS510 from Tommy as well, top bloke, good seller.

And I'm using the speedcam POI's as well. Quite convenient when I took my GTI over to London (and Goodwood FoS) last month, there are some camera's around there.

My GTI will be visiting the UK again shortly BTW, will be attending Goodwood Revival on saturday.

Hi Bolle,

We're sure busting thread integrity here but

*Look at when you want to. Late spring might be possible, but I believe early June is the earliest you should go without risking passes still being closed.
*If you can, be flexible in your planning, moving it a week forwards or backward according to weather. I had pretty lousy weather, the week before and after was beautiful. Remember, you're in the mountains, weather can vary quite a bit over the days/weeks. Check the webcams!
*I found accommodation no problem to arrange just showing up. But I was in early fall, in the summer it might be wise to book a bit in advance. There are quite a few nice guesthouses/hotels around which offer good, although not super luxurious, accommodation for around 40-50 EUR a night.
*I found it quite doable to do around 4-5 passes a day, including transfers (main roads) between them. That will fill your day quite nicely. If you're driving alone you'll be tired in a satisfied way at the end of the day!
*Enjoy your evenings, really nice after a day of driving to sit back and enjoy a good meal and glass/bottle of wine!
*Regarding the best passes, I more or less took the top-3 passes for each section as described on www.alpineroads.com, and I was not disappointed! I would at least advice the Furka/Susten/Grimsel 'triangle', just amazing!!!

A few university friends are going on a rally/trip to the alps in two weeks, I'd love to join them but I couldn't manage to drum up a co-driver, and driving alone 5 days including driving there and back from the Netherlands might be a bit much. And I had already booked for the Goodwood Revival the same weekend.

But I'm sure going to go back, although I'm looking at driving in Wales with quite a bit of interest.

I did manage to catch up with him in the end. Although he wouldnt own up at first the big scrape along his front bumper gave it away. but I managed to get access to some CCTV footage and you could clearly see him doing it.

Good job I went through the trouble of checking because i just got my quote through from VW HUddersfield.

£1436 Glad its coming out of his pocket and not mine!!!

Always look around for cctv and ask to see it is what i say :nerd:

No unfortunately not.. but he did smell of stale alcohol. It was actually at a family wedding so he knew a few people that I did so I didnt want to take it to the next level but he came very close... cant stand a liar esp when they are willing to lie to your face!

But I am gonna try squeeze a little extra work out of VW which i certaily think is deserved as I am doing a 50mile round trip to get the car to the garage and back... not to metion probably driving round in a fox for a few days!!

Ok probably a little late for questions as I have already bought the unit now... but was just curious as to a few points, especially as i have a parrot & ipod (in armrest) fitted.

1. Will the track names show up on the screen?? I have been following a post on vwnavi.com but got slightly lost after 10 pages.. I think i might need a MDI cable or something?? Has anyone done this?

2. Will the parrot operate through the RNS510??

Just pondering these questions myself - I too have the factory iPod in the armrest and I've got lost on that thread also. Bit like this thread - it goes off topic a bit. Think I'll register on VW Navi and post as a newbie

1. Think unlikely - functionality will probably be the same as MFD2 - no artist/track names

2. Parrot should work as with MFR2. I sold my Parrot kit before fitting and have gome the OEM Bluetooth kit from Stu

Cheers cass! I am still working my way through the thread (again) and have I am convinced that they are trying to find a way to have full track names from the ipod on the HU. As someone says below..

By the way just out of intrest how does the OEM bluetooth compare to the parrot?? And how much are we looking in terms of cost??

First,

Thanks to you guys doing all this work to get the RNS-510 to integrate with existing systems.

I have a 2008 R32 with nav and ipod adaptor in the consol armrest. I have an RNS-510 that I have not installed as yet. While the functionality of the current OEM nav with the ipod connection in the armrest is somewhat odd for an OEM execution (nav sees the ipod as a CD changer. Will play ipod content but functionality is limited) I don't want to loose what I have.

Is the current effort that you guys are making an effort in part to get the RNS-510 to see and connect with that ipod port that is in my armrest or are you guys trying to do something else? Frankly I would be happy if the RNS-510 had the same oddball ipod functionality that my current OEM nav unit has. Do you guys know if the RNS-510 will actually do that much right out of the box or will it simply not interface with the ipod port in the console at all at least right out of the box?

I just want to make sure that I at least understand what you guys are trying to accomplish so that I don't end up screwing the whole thing up relative to my car and the eventual installation of the unit.

thanks again.

Reply.....
Tthe whole concept of this MDI is to control and display the iPod as an iPod -not as a CD Changer- thru the touchscreen of the RNS-510. Your current iPod adapter still can be used with the RNS-510, but it will behave as a CD Changer (no song information displayed anywhere, limit of 5 playlists plus all songs selection).

Thanks for that Cass.

I am getting my parrot looked at tomorrow as it hasnt been functioning properly and the gent that fitted it disconnected my ipod when he did. So once I have that sorted (or returned it) I will be looking at alternatives.

Managed to get to the end of that thread and apparently there is a lead available that will allow the ipod tracks to be displayed on the HU. There was a link to a kit but it included a relacedment unit for under the arm rest and was a little pricey. I am quite sure I have seen a part number of there which can be ordered directly from VW... will try dig it out later.

I think VrStu may have the answer to many of these questions already :undecided:

OK - bit of thread hi-jack, maybe not.

Anyhow, having tried an RNS510 in a Treg for a few days, as much as I was impressed with the unit in general, I thought there was a major flaw, or backwards step compared to the RNS-MFD2.  The POI icons - you are severly restricted on how many you are able to display on the map.  This isn't so on the RNS-MFD2, nor on my Audi RNS-E.

Or have I missed a trick somewhere?  :undecided:

I think you can have 5 or 6 POIs up at once, not a major flaw imo, and having the RNS 510 for a year now, I wouldnt say its a been a problem, in fact I never noticed it.

The RNS can display 10 POI categories at the same time.

One thing to remember is the RNS-510 still has 18GB of Hard Disk space for music once the Navi maps are loaded on, plus you have the SD card slot (upto 2GB in size) and it can play MP3's from a DVD (another 8GB if you use DL disks).

The MDI kit (full ipod control from RNS-510 headunit) looks good but is €279 + delivery from kufatec (http://www.kufatec.de/shop/product_info.php/info/p1131_Volkswagen-MDI-Multimediainterface-MEDIA---IN-Golf-5-V.html) plus the iPod cable from a UK VW dealer at around £23.

I thought I would miss not having an ipod adapter but now I have music loaded on the hard disk and few SD cards I am more than happy without it.

I presume that this kit is to add iPod connectivity outside of the factory iPod fit with the MFD2 (option in preference to a CD multichanger). I have this and presume it will work with the RNS 510 but with the same limited functionality. The hard drive and SD capability of the RNS 510 will give me artist/track info, yes

Yep the MDI kit is separate to the normal VW ipod kit (as fitted to the MK5 at present) and is designed to allow connection of iPod's and USB storage devices and provide direct control via touchscreen.

The MDI kit is only supported on : -

RNS 510 (only for devices with index ..A or hihger)
RCD 510 (not for devices with index AA/ ..AB)
RCD 310

Basically the latest gen touchscreen headunit's.

And yes you get fully album/artist/title display when playing MP3's from the Hard Disk, SD Cards and MP3 CD/DVD's

I am close to buying a  2007 Mk5 GTI. It is a VW demo or company car fitted with the earlier Sat Nav(MFD2). How good is this unit? Is it possible to upgrade to the RNS510 from the recommended seller in Poland? If so would it be compatable with the multifunction steering wheel?

My main concern about the fitted unit is that the map DVD has to be in the CD slot for the Sat Nav to work thus the CD player is not useable whilst navigating.

One futher question. Is it possible to get speed camera positions/warnings displayed on either MFD2 or RNS 510?

its really easy to fit, took me 30 minutes all in (i did plan and practice the night before though) , one tip is do not disconnect the airbag warning light (or you will get a warning light come up) just move the part over to the left as in picture below) oh and get some trim pullers or make your own

you do of course need a GPS antenna and i put my antenna here

there is a guide for getting the head unit out in the middle of this guide http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=40928.0

the MFD2 is ok'ish, but the RNS510 is so much better imo, and it will be a straight swop and will work with all your other bits too

1. MFD2 is an adequate unit but with only a 2D map. The RNS 510 is more functional with a 3D map but still has limitations with only a 4 digit postcode search (as the MFD2 also). RNS 510 is a straight plug n play swop with the MFD2 and should work with the MFSW no problem.

2. The MFD2 needs the disc in to run the mapping. Your 2007 version should have the newer DVD nav disc. You can add a CD multichanger or MP3/iPod in the centre armrest or glovebox.

3. Yes you can get a hack to add speed camera locations on the RNS 510 but they are visual warnings without audio. See earlier in this thread and do a forum search for more info. Also check out this site:

My main concern about the fitted unit is that the map DVD has to be in the CD slot for the Sat Nav to work thus the CD player is not useable whilst navigating.

One futher question. Is it possible to get speed camera positions/warnings displayed on either MFD2 or RNS 510?

Arrived this afternoon.. drove round like a mad man trying to gte it fitted somewhere! ended up at Halfords of all places... didnt trust them and left! Unit looks mint... cant wait cant wait!

Got another ICE specialist coming to fit it tomorrow morning... he said that there may be a problem with having to connect it to the speedo, although he wont know until he has a look. Anyone else had any experience of having to get another lead?

That is only an issue on aftermarket Navigation units which require a speed input which is only available via a CAN BUS adapter in the MK5.

This will be plug and play so don't let them try to sell you anything extra as you don't need it.

My GPS antenna is the factory sharks fin aerial as I have the MFD2 fitted as a factory option. If you are not going down this route (you would need to route the cable under the roof lining and down the windscreen pillar to the rear of the unit), I would recommend you put your antenna under the centre grille as 182_blue suggests. The antenna will see enough satellites through the windscreen glass to operate the unit effectively.

Cheers Cass! By the centre grill i take it you mean the grill above the unit? Will putting it under the grill effect it ability to get a signal or is it able to work fine from under there??

Don think I willl go the whole hog and get the shark fin ariel as it will be coming out next year when the car goes back.

Best investment I have made! Look at it this way.. the same units is used in all new VW's from the Toureg down to the new MKVI golf... and is a approx £1800 optional extra. There are loads of people out there who want this but think its too expensive. My car goes back in a years time but all I am going to do is A) Keep it and put it in my new golf B) Sell it.

Either way Im a winner! by the way had my mate from his £40k Merc C-Class sit in mine yesterday and even he was impressed with the way it finishes off the interior... looks much classier than his and the functionality of the unit is probably the best OEM out there. not to mention that you can now attach a usb source directly to the head unit.... 250Gb HD here we come

Pics to go up later.... Just trying to burn some DVD's packed full of 8Gb of music! Who needs an ipod!

yeh people complain about the after fit price of the unit but mine is coming out when the car sells so depending when I sell I will recoup most of the cost, if I sold it now I would get back what it cost me I'm sure :-)

Exactly Blue... I thought about this long and hard (about 5sec tbh) before I ordered. Think of all the benifits:

1. Never get caught out by speed cameras
2. Get traffic updates so never have to sit in jams again
3. Never be distracted trying to put a new cd in or fine tuning a station (your inbuilt HD and auto scan feature should take care of this)
4. Watch DVD's in the comfort of your own car
5. Make the interior look lush
6. Know exactly what time your going to get where your going

The list is endless....

Love the feature where the sat nav shows you that there is built up traffic!! Didnt know it could do this! was leaving home yesterday to see that there was a picture of lots of little cars along a road I usually take, when I got there the road was busy.. AMAZING

Hours of endless fun

I think so.. You seem to be able to get live traffic alerts too. Something I couldnt get with my tomtom unless i subscribed. I think its connected to the traffic update system (those blue camera like things you sometimes see roadside that monitor traffic and speeds). Very impressive as it gives you a good indication of where you will be held up slightly

The traffic stuff (uses TMC from itis) is quite good on the RNS-510, the display on the map with the symbols for the type of delay is one of my favorite features.

TMC actually uses two sources in the UK - TrafficMaster, which uses live "real-time" data from the blue poles (and other monitoring sources), and ITIS who provide iTMC data.  The ITIS/iTMC is a flawed system, in that it isn't real time, it isn't fully automated, and relies on "human intervention".  ITIS only collect their data from National Express Coaches and Eddie Stobart trucks - so if a truck/coach is on a tea brake or scheduled bus stop, you get flawed data, and if there are no Nat Express or Stobart wagons on your road, you get no data.  I've been caught out twice recently - one for a hold up of 20minutes stationary traffic, and the other for an 8 mile v.slow (less than 5mph) tailback - both on "trunk" roads.  One work around is to manually use Classic FM as the TMC source (because that carries the more reliable TrafficMaster data), but Classic FM isn't always available (signal not strong enough to correctly carry RDS data) thruought the UK.

Audi have been using TMC since 1999 Europe-wide, and included the UK around 2003, and the RNS-MFD2 also uses TMC in Europe - but Volkswagen were too tight to pay for the UK TMC license on the V3/2006 disc,  though they did include on the later one.

Anyone who has used the dynamic navigation (from TMC alerts) in Europe, particularly France and Germany, will know that their use of TMC is considerably better than here in the UK.

Trouble is, even if you permanently listen to Classic FM, the RDS data relies on much higher signal strenths to decode the TMC data - similar to analogue TV and teletext - you might have an OK picture, but if you press text, you get a load of garbled characters.

All that said, if/when you do get a satisfactory TMC reception, with appropriately monitored roads, then the UK dynamic navigation works fine.  Just a shame it is so inconsistent in the UK.

I have been considering an upgrade for a while. but if the sound is no better and the ipod cant be seen which is 2 of the 3 reasons i would upgrade. then all that leaves me is the fact it looks the dogs b@llocks i know it has lots of other great features and i'm very tempted but i want these as well.  :undecided:

I thought I would massively miss not having iPod integration in the car when I brought the ED30 with the RNS-510 (as if it's made by Apple I normally have to buy it, I currently own three iPod's and an iPhone 3G  :embarassed:). I had the Dice kit for my X5 which on the Navi gave the track/artist details on screen.

But TBH with the built in Hard Disk (18GB left for music), SD Card Slot and support for MP3's from DVD (another 8GB on DL Disc's) plus 3.5mm AUX jack you just don't need the iPod in the car.

But if you must have the integration at least for a few hundred euro's you can get the full integration with the new MDI kit that isn't available with any of the other OEM VW headunits.

So to me 2 out of 3 improvements is enough to justify the cost to upgrade.

the postage was in with the price (i.e 950 euros), its not as much as you think tbh anyway, they work out quite cheap especially when the euro drops to 143 to the pound :-)

It doesn't come with the speed camera data but a certain 'geek'  send him a disc with the latest POI database.

It does include the Mobile camera locations but these don't get updated automatically.

The Sat Nav is still being used in new VW's (MKVI golf inc) and I doubt that will change over the next year or 2. Still a £1800 factory fit option :lipsrsealed:

Yes I agree. But somethings depreciate more than others. i.e. Plasma will depreciate much more than the Sat Nav. The point being that there is a million different TV's out there, but there is currently only one top spec Sat Nav for VW's. The TV your going to pay the price on the label.. the Sat Nav your geting for less than half the price the manufacturers are selling at.

Do the math

No not all the RA's have it it's only the new professional connected version.

The unit basically has a built-in Orange Sim so it can connect to the mobile network and automatically downloads the latest updates and live camera postions over the t'internet. It also allows you to capture positions of the live cameras and send these back to RA to share with other users.

The standard subscriptions is £1 per month or £10 a year more than the "unconnected" version.

Also it now comes with a remote control to access the menus or silence the beeps without having to reach across the dashboard.

Plus it has support for an optional windscreen or front number plate mounted laser detection module.

Here what it looks like - (http://i281.photobucket.com/albums/kk207/Stevep_010/NewPics/IMG_0530.jpg)

(same as anything these days) what its worth doesnt exsist anyone in the current climate.

A couple more Qs -

Is it easy to swap between two cars?

Do you know how it would compare with the Road Pilot?

Is it waterproof?

A couple more Qs -

Is it easy to swap between two cars?

Yes very easy, it comes with two mounting options, either a small plastic disc which it clips into and also the unit to rotate (what I am using in the photo) or the older style windscreen mount. The plastic disc's are a few quid from Road Angel.

Quote
Do you know how it would compare with the Road Pilot?

I like the compact size of the Micro Pilot and think its a very good unit for the price but believe the RA's database and the new self updating stuff makes it a better unit.

Quote
Is it waterproof?

Don't believe so.

im not talking yearly so your missing my point, i bought my TV and my MFD3 at the same time about 6 months ago, i paid £1500 for my TV and i would be lucky to get £400 for it now, i paid £700 ish for my MFD3 when i got it and im pretty sure i can sell it for that if not more (in fact i know someone who will give me £700 + now), in my books that zero depreciation on the MFD3 in 6 months, and huge depreciation on the tv

ps, i would still buy the TV first though

lets face it though who buys things expecting them not to depreciate, i didnt buy it not expecting to loose something, but if i can recoup even a quarter the cost and have a years enjoyment from it then i will be chuffed

I've got an R32 arriving next week, with the MFD3 sat nav, and about the only downside with it is the lack of speed camera warnings.  It's something that I might need, as the R32's a fair bit quicker than my current car.
