Title: Anthracite Blue 55 plate @ £16,000 - help!
Post by: Steve78 on 11 March 2008, 15:55
After binning my order for a brand new GTI, I've been looking around for 2-3 year old car and I've found a GTI in blue for £16k.  The spec is good (leather, 18's etc), it's done 30,000 miles which isn't bad and the condition is fantastic, but is it good value for money?

Well to give you an idea, I paid £14K + my part ex worth about £1k for the following.

Was originally priced at £16850, but was reduced to £15850 and thats when I made them an offer.

5 Door Silver 05 plate GTI DSG - found the cars with DSG were approximately £1K more than their manual equivalent on the used market.

Mileage - 31,000 miles. One previous owner. Enthusiast who part exed it against a Edition 30 they had.

Unmarked Leather Interior
Winter Pack
Unmarked 18" Alloys
Rear Parking Sensors
2 Brand New Tyres - Old ones were legal but not too much left on them so negotiated.
6 months road tax - Again had to haggle for that.

Stunning Condition overall

VW Warranty until June/July. 12 Months Volvo Used Car Warranty (Purchased from Volvo Main Dealer)
Excellent Finance Rate.

I maybe could've got a slightly better deal if I'd been prepared to travel halfway round the country, but it might be a bit cheaper but you don't know what sort of condition it'll be in. Plus having had a very bad experience with an Audi dealership that was too far away for me to go back and complain too I wanted to purchase locally.

thats about right for that age car, remember your paying dealer price with 1 years warranty, when you buy private you dont get such a thing!. ive had been living on vw's website for 3 weeks for a GTi and that price is about corrrect. Does it list any other extra's??? xenons, sat nav, luxury pack, multidisc and armrest???, these do make a huge difference in price if sold by a vw dealer.

Post by: Steve78 on 11 March 2008, 18:49
Just found another deal, how about this one?

2005 05 Plate GTI

3 Doors, Manual, Hatchback, Petrol, 23000 miles, Black, Remote Central Door Locking, Immobiliser, Inclination Sensor Alarm, Anti-Lock Brakes, Power-Assisted Steering, Driver Information System Computer, Rake/Reach Adjustable Steering Column/Wheel, Body Coloured Bumpers, Front Electric Windows, Ten Speakers, Radio/CD, Front Fog Lights, Automatic Dipping Rear View Mirrors Internal, Electric/Heated Mirrors External, Paint Metallic, Front Armrest, Driver/Passenger Seat Height Adjustment, Front/Rear Head Restraints, Driver/Passenger Seat Lumbar Support, Electronic Stability Programme, Five Seats Seating Capacity, Full Size Alloy Spare Wheel, Upholstery Leather, Climate Control, 18in Alloy Wheels, Air Bag Driver, Air Bag Passenger, Air Bag Side. £14,050

Price seems a bit low to me compared to what I've been looking at, however the dealer said there's been a few calls about the car so I am going to have a look at it first thing tomorrow.

Good spec for the price?  Or would it be best to avoid a 05 plate?

Only options there look like the leather, 18" Monza's and the sound system (standard is 8 speakers) all the rest is standard. It doesn't specify High or Midline trip computer either (just says driver information system computer). Decent price though. If it is advertised at £14k then I'd go for it at £13.5k. It still has a few months warranty and you can always ask about extending it.

no paddleshift on some DSG models ?

no paddleshift on some DSG models ?

These can be retro-fitted by your dealer - about £300. Had DSG with paddles on my 3.2 Audi, Have DSG without padddles on my GTI, don't miss the paddles.

05 plates can still have main dealer warranty, mine does. Theres another thread on here about extending the VW Warranty - think its about £400 for an extra year.

I'd look more at the overall condition of the car than the number on the registration.

if the car is in good condition with a decent spec and you can afford the money then i dont see anything wrong with paying what you mentioned.

i paid 15995 for my 05 plate from a main dealer, got an extended warranty, 4 new tyres and new discs and pads all round in the deal.

theres not a mark on the car, leather still nice and fresh and fully loaded apart from the xenons and MFSW.

i got 4.5k for my trade in and was happy with the deal, im not going to stress thinking i could have or should have paid less, more than happy with the purchase.

would be interested to hear if main dealers do actually retro fit the dsg paddles though, the only thing mine doesnt have that i wish it does

Slighty off the wall comment for this thread,  but whats the point of having a DSG without the paddles?, might as well have a traditional auto ..........anyone else got any thoughts on this?

For me the ability to swap cogs like a manual but faster and with full control of the steering wheel is what makes the DSG car so quick, and if you left brake, then the car really comes alive, if you need to keep nudging the gear lever with your left hand you might as well as gone for the 3 pedals and saved some wonga in the process in my opinion,

Flak jacket and helmet on, awaiting the first volley...........

To be honest I wanted a performance automatic with a hatchback for the dog so Golf GTI DSG fit the bill. Never liked golfs before but I do like this one. There aren't many other auto options in this ball park eg - VXR & ST don't come with Auto boxes and the 330 Clubsport SSG doesnt have the required boot.

Try a little experiment cruise at 40-50 in D then knock the lever into S - You'll have dropped from 6th to 3rd via the box quicker than you can with the paddles. Therefore even if I had paddles thats what I'd use when wanting to make rapid progress.

My missus and I both had 3.2 Quattro A3's with DSG and we both chose to use the Sport mode over the paddles everytime.

But as I said previously if I do ever feel like I'm missing out £300 will solve the issue, so if you find the perfect GTI in mint condition don't disregard it because it doesn't have padddles, just budget £300 into your purchase price.

Post by: KentBladeboy on 11 March 2008, 23:24
Don't get on the SSG route, you end up looking like the parcel shelf nodding dog with one of those, hence why the new M3 2 pedal will be a DSG type copy twin clutch affair   ,  must have been a lot of Germanic corporate pride swallowed on that one, bet they are p*ssing their pants in Wolfsburg at the Munchen boys climbdown

The S option is OK, but you are still leaving control to the computer, and thats not what I am looking for, but it is down to personal preferences.

Also, Mike, well impressed that you are such an animal lover, you bought your dog a GTI,  top man

Did they change certain things on the GTI from 2005 onwards?

When i go to buy parts from the dealer they always ask is it the model 2005 and above? Same when i serch through webites for mods it always lists 2004 54- 2005 05 model or 2006 55 upwards???

ive noticed a couple of changes from my o5 to 07 GTi and thats, the quality of leather feels different in the 07(feels a cheaper quality). The highline computer is slightly different in display. The dashboard upper half is More black above the sliver trim then grey like the old.Steering wheel is now black rather then grey.Buttons on the Multifunction wheel are in reverse sides of the wheel. My silver ashtray cover has gone from the 07 model, replace by a black one , the car mats are now no longer a turn lock in the floor to a straight pin style which doesnt look as strong.Ive noticed that the annoying seat belt on the passenger door, which use to knock against the side of the pillar now has a convieniant sown loop on the back of the belt fabric to cushion it hitting the pillar.

would you have turned down a decent car simply because it doesnt have the paddles?

I've just sent a tentative email to my local dealers asking about possible retrofit of the paddles, if its only £300 i'll get it done, but it was my impression that the MFSW with the paddles on is more than this.

Its models years and yes the spec changes slightly.

So Just because its 2008, does not mean you would get a 2008 model year build, its whats available to the retailer to sell.

But most desent dealers would infor the customer that the spec might be slightly differant.

You might not get a quick response as mine had never actually done it before. But they confirmed my guide price of £300 sounded about right and they thought an hours labour would cover it.

Saw a MFSW with paddles sell on Ebay recently for £110 and theres actually a fitting guide on this forum somewhere. So if your that way incilned you could fit it yourself. I wouldn't have the kohonas myself though.

I'm going to view the Blue GTI on Sunday but I took a look at the Black 05 model this morning and it was horrible!  The car had been keyed 3 times and the Monza II's were ruined, only the front drivers side alloy was in a reasonable condition.  Needless to say, I told Dagenham Motors who had the vehicle that I wasn't interested.

My car did that when I first collected it and I thought Oh Crap thats going to be really annoying!!

However if you slide the seatbelt adjuster thats built into the side of your car all the way to its highest position you'll notice it stops. Basically at that angle the plastic bit of the seat belt sits further away from the side of the car so no knocking.

also since ive had the 18s ive noticed a few more rattles, some get really annoying especially when i fitted the satnav.. i had to unfit it twice and figure out that horrid creaking noise.

the worse is comming from the rear right side of the car cant figure out hat it is yet, ill empty the car and drive it around see if i can hear it more

well i suppose it is a hot hatch so you gotta expect some rattles even for a vw

anything messing with the wiring is something that they won't carry out.

they couldnt even fit my satnav as they said i need the multifunction steering wheel or it wont work, at all!!!
