Title: I am a tit!
Post by: Horney on 29 October 2007, 19:25
Tried fitting my replacement CV boot tonight and it just won't work. Great I now have a car with No CV boot so I'm going nowhere.

Why is it I can do these things blindfolded on a mini and I never have any problems. I try and do it on a golf and I end up worse than when I started.

Anyone in the Basingstoke area fancy coming round to mine one night this week and fixing it for me? I'll cook you a slap up dinner!

Nick you could do it cowboy style and get wrap arounds except you glue them together and stick a jubliee clip on it won't last more than a year, but hey it gets you through a MOT.

Outer. I know it' not supposed to be that hard but I swear this car has it in for me! I tried one of those glue on boots as an interim which was a mistake really but I know a few peeps who've been OK with them. It just wouldn't fit right for the glue to bond and it was just rubbish really. Lesson learned there.

I'm going to have to do it properly but I don't have the best place to work on it as a wet dark carpark is far from ideal and I just know I'll break something when i do it. Me paranoid? Nah! I think I'm just really fed up with it at the moment. Everything I've tried to do on it I've cocked up and it's making me feel useless, which I don't like!

Its a love and hate mate, but at least you are creating, fixing stuff and not in a office with your soul suck out of you!
Give me a mechanics job anyday shame it doesn't pay enough.
You should do a pictorial of how to change a CV boot and enjoy it plus take your time over it.

The past 124months have been like this for me. Constantly.

Even tonight for that matter.

Sucks doesn't it! It's not really the fact that's it's broken, it's more that I can't fix it and I should be able to. The minis quite often broke, but I could fix them everytime without too much drama. Who'd have thought a mini would be easier to work on but I really think they are. Access is a  bummer, but they are a fair bit simpler. There was the odd time it went Pete Tong, but you expect that. This thing just seems to be taunting me.

Jay: I'm am in an office all day having soul slowly sucked out of me, I work in IT! It's cars that are supposed to keep me sane, ha ha hee heee ha ha ha boing!

Rick: Dunno what time I'll be back tomorrow, thanks for the offer but I have instructions already, just need to get my head sorted s I don't lose my temper with it.

This always makes me laugh and you reminded me of it. It's just cracked my first smile since about 6:0 this evening. Thanks bud :-)

aynes: Rotate anticlockwise.
Translation: Clamp with molegrips then beat repeatedly with hammer anticlockwise.

Haynes: This is a snug fit.
Translation: Clamp with molegrips then beat repeatedly with hammer.

Haynes: This is a tight fit.
Translation: Clamp with molegrips then beat repeatedly with a hammer.

Haynes: As described in Chapter 7...
Translation: That'll teach you not to read right through before you start. Now you are looking at scary photos of the inside of a gearbox.

Haynes: Prise off...
Translation: Hammer a screwdriver into...

Haynes: Undo...
Translation: Go buy a tin of WD40 (giant economy size).

Haynes: Retain tiny spring...
Translation: PINGGGG - "Jesus, where the hell did that go?"

Haynes: Press and rotate to remove bulb...
Translation: OK - that's the glass bit off, now fetch some good pliers to dig out the bayonet part (and maybe a plaster or two).

Haynes: Lightly slacken...
Translation: Start off lightly and build up till the veins on your forehead are throbbing then clamp with molegrips then beat repeatedly with hammer.

Haynes: Weekly checks...
Translation: If it isn't broken don't fix it.

Haynes: Routine maintenance...
Translation: If it isn't broken, it's about to be. We warned you!

Haynes: One spanner rating.
Translation: An infant could do this... so how did you manage to **** it up?

Haynes: Two spanner rating.
Translation: Now you may think that you can do this because two is a low, teensy weensy number... but you also thought the wiring diagram was a map of the Tokyo underground (in fact, that would have been more use to you).

Haynes: Three spanner rating.
Translation: Make sure you won't need your car for a couple of days.

Haynes: Four spanner rating.
Translation: You're not seriously considering this are you?

Haynes: Five spanner rating.

Haynes: If not, you can fabricate your own special tool like this...
Translation: Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.

Haynes: Compress...
Translation: Squeeze with all your might, jump up and down on it, throw it at the garage wall, then find some molegrips and a hammer...

Haynes: Inspect...
Translation: Squint at really hard and pretend you know what you are looking at, then declare in a loud knowing voice to your wife, "Yep, it's as I thought, it's going to need a new one"

Haynes: Carefully...
Translation: You are about to suffer serious abrasions.

Haynes: Retaining nut...
Translation: Yes, that's it, that big spherical blob of rust.

Haynes: Get an assistant...
Translation: Prepare to humiliate yourself in front of someone you know.

Haynes: Difficult to reach ...
Translation: Assembled at the factory and never meant to be touched.

Haynes: Turning the engine will be easier with the spark plugs removed.
Translation: However, starting the engine afterwards will be much harder. Once that sinking pit of your stomach feeling has subsided, you can start to feel deeply ashamed as you gingerly refit the spark plugs.

Haynes: Refitting is the reverse sequence to removal.
Translation: Yeah, right. But you swear in different places.

Haynes: Prise away plastic locating pegs...
Translation: Snap off...

Haynes: Using a suitable drift...
Translation: Clamp with molegrips then beat repeatedly with hammer.

Haynes: Everyday toolkit
Translation: RAC Card & Mobile Phone (but don't forget your molegrips and hammer!)

Haynes: Apply moderate heat...
Translation: Unless you have a blast furnace, don't bother. Alternatively, clamp with molegrips then beat repeatedly with hammer.

Haynes: Index
Translation: List of all the things in the book, bar what you need to do.

I'm a tit for thinking the glue on boot was the easy option and I should have done it properly or not tackled it myself and given it to a garage to do. I especially shouldn't have done it in the dark with only a head torch for light!

Title: Re: I am a tit!
Post by: Horney on 30 October 2007, 10:31
Well I had a go this morning with a new proper boot and surprise, surprise it wasn't having it.

Firstly the hub nut just wouldn't come off. Ok I thought, no problem I'll just leave the CV joint in the hub and split it from the driveshaft without removal. So I remove the track rod arm ball joint, loosen the strut to hub bolts, remove the caliper and shear off one the nuts holding the bottom ball joint. Great! So I've got the hub off and I decide to try splitting the joint off the shaft, nope not having any of it.

So that's it, I'm done. It's not drivable so I can't take it anywhere to get it repaired. Crunch time. If I can't find anyone to come out and repair it at my place before I need to leave for OE then it goes on eBay as spares or repairs.

take the driveshaft completely off and do it, you will save yourself a lot of hassle! to get the hub nut off use a breaker bar wth a scaffold pole or similar over it with a screwdriver through the caliper into the groved disc. the other end is the splined 8mm bit
Title: Re: I am a tit!
Post by: Horney on 30 October 2007, 10:41
I don't have, nor know where to get a scafold pole and I'm fed up of spending money on it so I'm sure as hell not going to buy one. I have a really long breaker bar anyway which should be long enough. I was jumping up and down on it and it was just turning the wheel even though the full weight of the car was on it. I think it needs removing with an air wrench as the thread is badly coroded. The easiest root I think for me would be to buy a complete driveshaft already built up with new boots., but like I've said I don't have the money anymore and I've lost all patience with it.

thats why you put a screwdriver between the caliper into the disk!

well if you find the motivation i can give you a hand some time this week, i might have a spare driveshaft as well (if 16v and 8v are the same fit?)

I feel your pain mate

Been thru the same on the Project Driver. Rounded off a caliper bolt, tried drilling it out with no joy, so, had to change the front hub,

to get the hub nut off i had the car back on the wheels, but no caliper fitted, handbrake on, and all i could spin the front wheel

so in the end i rigged up an axlestand , short extension bar and a breaker bar, , then SAT on the front wing whilst pushing down on the wheel with one foot, and pushing down on the breaker bar with the other.

Apparently , according to my kids, I have great balance, right up until the nut finally gave up and undid, with one hell of a crack.

good luck with whatever route you take.

I reckon we need to start organising some techie weekends like they have on club80-90.
See I did a heater matrix and didn't think it was too bad but I wouldn't want to attempt a cv boot or cambelt which other people say are a piece of p!ss.
If you had enough of us in one place at one time I reckon between us we could fix everybodys problems (car related at least).
All we need is somebody with enough room to accomodate a load of broken cars and we each bring our own tools.

Title: Re: I am a tit!
Post by: Horney on 30 October 2007, 17:39
My problem was that the old heater box and all the flaps had become brittle and as I removed it it fell to pieces. VW wanted a million pounds for a new one so I had to get one from the scrappers. Now you what a pain it is to get that lot out, I had to do it twice!

Putting it all back together wasn't too bad but you need to be a bit double jointed and have a flexible back to get right down in the footwells for some bits.

Cool idea!

A mate of mine is in a retro Porsche club and they organised a group day with a specialist Porsche mechanic to show them a few tricks of the trade. I think they looked at engine tuning and how to repair valves and stuff. I would certainly pay good money to do something similar with a decent GTI mechanic.

Heh, i did my cv boot at the start of the year and the hub nut is possibly the tightest bolt i've evr had to undo, although its followed a close second by the rear brake pad carrier bolts when i did the rear wheel bearing. Taking the head off soon (i'm convinced i have a small gasket leak, waiting for a 'sniff' test to confirm) so hopefully all will go ok then, although if you lot are organising a 'bring your car here to be fixed for free by people who know how' day, i may just turn up. :D
