Martin

pants!!! just noticed you are only 17 and i cant help insure anyone under 19! :embarassed:
Have you tried a company called Adrian Flux?
-
You tried the normal brokers sites? www.Confused.com, www.theaa.com?
I was going through the AA, but I found some company willing to knock 150 quid off through confused.com.
-
At 17 your not going to get much lower than that though, im 18 and my qoutes are around £1.5-£1.7k

It's amazing what a difference age makes. I've held my licence for less than two years, got a couple of claims against me, and I can get TPFT on a Mk3 VR6 for 900 quid. The difference? I'm 27.
I really would have to suggest getting something small like a 1L or 1.3 for a little while. I know it sucks, but the amount of money saved would probably be worth it...
Either that or the old 'Be a named driver' thing (i.e. your mum/dad/brother is the main insuree, but you're down as a named driver). I guess they're probably wise to that these days, and you wouldn't build any no claims for yourself of course, but it always used to save heaps.
-
insurance is the reason they make damned 1.1 fiestas. Try elephant. norwhich union direct and direct line. I remeber getting quotes of £2200 regularly for my fiesta.
-
Give elephant/admiral/bell a go and put your mum and dad on as named drivers.
-
I have found norwich union to be good since they count time on a provisional license as driving experience!
Will probably give HIC a bell this time though since I turn 19 very soon

Insurers are getting wise to this now so be very carefull if you decide to take that route, its called "fronting" where you just insure the car in someone elses name to try and get the cost down and if the insurers suspect this then they can refuse to honour a claim! be warned..... :nerd:
With us the rate is always based on the highest risk driver anyway so this technically would not make any difference anyway. Unfortunatly as others have said £2k for a 17yr old is about the going rate, so you would be better off insuring something small and getting a couple of years experience and no claims behind you (when i was 17 i had a beige 1982 metro 1.0! ), best of luck tho....

That's what I suspected... Ah well. Such a widely exploited 'loophole' was bound to attract enough people to get 'shut' by the insurers I guess..
Do you always use only the highest-risk driver for calculating premiums? I only ask because a friend of mine saved a fair bit by sticking his missus down as a named driver on his. Seemed more like they take an average or something? Just curious...
-
My first policy was £1200 on a Mk2 Golf GL 1.8, I was 20 and had been driving 3 years.
Sticking my parents on as named drivers always brought the cost down, until last year when I hit 25.
My policy this year with AA was 10 quid cheaper arranging it over the phone compared to the quote from Confused.com ?!
There are some specialists, eg HIC, try also Greenlight insurance 0870 7535455 or BrentAcre VW Insurance Specialists

We normally do only use the highest risk driver when calculating premiums but on rare occasions sticking your girlfriend on can sometimes help eg if the system rates her as a slightly higher risk but a couple of our underwriters give female driver discounts so it can actually bring the premium down even though it is rating her as the highest risk (i think they have not noticed that yet ), it does'nt work often though as some of our other underwrites give discounts for just you driving....
Same with putting parents on, usually it wont change the price either way....
This will vary depending on which company you ring though, i am only basing this advise on what happens through us so you may well find different with other companies.....
Hope this helps/makes some sense
-
When I put my dad on as a named driver (he's an advanced V&A driver for the BTP) my premium went down by £200...
So if it doesn't work often, when it does it can work quite well...
-
yeah definatley, i have had many cases where customers told me they made big savings adding parents etc it just depends on the company!
Just a case of try it and see cos it dont always.......

Well, I've managed to get a quote for £900 through confused.com, but I'm going to give Adrian flux a go I think (especially considering I will be getting some coilovers in the not too distant future).
Does everyone generally get competitive quotes from Adrian Flux, or is it just that they'll happily insure modified cars? A friend of mine is with them, but ironically enough hasn't told them of his mods yet (He has done them since his last renewal though).

Well thanx soo much guys, ive tryed the main brokers and there realy kickin me in the balls, inshurance with my mam on is 2k for mk3 golf 1.9 tdi (bastard) im affraid im gonna have to go with maybe a mk3 polo 1.3 or a mk3 golf 1.4 but realy would love a tdi golf
Ill get some more quotes ect and let u guys know
Btw i got 3 speeding points and had 2 accidents both not my fault dont know if accidents will bump up the price?

If they involved a claim on your insurance at all then they'll certainly not help. Was that 2K quote with them declared too?
I've got a couple of claims against me, so my premiums are a bit high for someone of my age/experience. I can't quite work out why I could get a quote for ~£650 on a 1.3 Escort, yet for a 2.8VR6 it's only £900? (well, the 'scort is fully comp and the Vr6 is TPFT)
Without the claims I could get ~350 to 400 for the 'scort I think.

Flux are our sister company and up til recently we were not allowed to insure our own vehicles and they were the best on mine. They should be worth a try...they insure most things (modded, standard, bikes, classic, kits cars, commercial etc etc)
Always declare mods though..... :lipsrsealed:

non fault claims normally dont have any effect but obviously if you start having a lot of non fault claims they are going to start and wonder why!
A minor speeding conviction again usually will not make a diffence with us but will vary with insurers....watch out though cos when you start getting a mixture of convictions and claims the premiums can shoot up!

Yeah. It's annoying how something as simple (and not really risk-increasing) as an induction kit can make some insurers run away. Most annoying.
If you put in any mods in the confused.com interface it returns a big list of 'Will not insure modified vehicles'. What's the point in them asking then?

With ourselves you can have up to £1500 cosmetic modifications and 10bhp performance modifications without it even effecting your premium so an induction kit willl be no problems....
I think very few of the online insurers quote when you enter mods, as far as i am aware our website (www.hertsinsurance.com) is one of the first where you can get proper online quotes for modified cars!
I would say to anyone using our website site, it has only gone online in the last couple of days though so please excuse any errors (teething problems!) and if the price is not the best definatly let me know because not all our schemes quote online yet so i may still be able to help you!

Great! I'll go and stick a quote through for ya....
Oh, and do coilovers count as 'Cosmetic'?

Apprently you're unable to provide an online quote, and are going to contact me....

 The 16v conversion on my Mk1 only added £92 to the premium & that included the 4-branch too (they already knew about the K&N) - no point not declaring if you ask me :nerd:
P.S. Martin - I noticed my new policy shows "unspecified engine mods" does that mean I can gas flow it & stuff

DOH!! as i said, expect a few teething problems!!

just thought.....you said you have had a licence under 2yrs and it was a vr6? usually on cars like a VR6 you have to have a full licence over 2year which is why it probably didnt work, we may still be able to help but will need to contact you for some further info so we can refer it to our underwriters
Thats probably why it didnt quote!

Hi mate, that will refer to a modification that you mentioned which is not listed on our computer system (cant remember what it was now tho!) and Gas flowing etc would often be put down as this, at the moment we have the bhp as the standard figure for a 1.8 16v lump so you could do up to 10bhp without it changing the actual premium. You should really tell us when you do any modifications tho and unfortunatly they do normally charge an admin fee()!
-
:undecided: I'm confused, it hasn't had any mods  (yet )
-
sorted it mate, new documents are on their way to ya!

Yup, Will be two years in September. I had to put down 1 year on the site, as there's no provision for months at all.
How long would it normally take you to contact me? I've not heard anything yet. That said, the home 'phone no. I put in doesn't actually have a 'phone plugged into it (although it is going to soonish - only just moved in so need to sort out extensions and suchlike), and besides I'm at work so wouldn't hear anything anyway. I did enter my mobile too though. What's your normal procedure for this ring-back thing?
<Removed all those juicy details, so I can retain an air of mystery.... ahem>

pm me your number matey and i will give you a bell and see what i can sort!!
