Insurers are getting wise to this now so be very carefull if you decide to take that route, its called "fronting" where you just insure the car in someone elses name to try and get the cost down and if the insurers suspect this then they can refuse to honour a claim! be warned..... :nerd:

That's what I suspected...  Ah well.  Such a widely exploited 'loophole' was bound to attract enough people to get 'shut' by the insurers I guess..

Do you always use only the highest-risk driver for calculating premiums?  I only ask because a friend of mine saved a fair bit by sticking his missus down as a named driver on his.  Seemed more like they take an average or something?  Just curious...

My first policy was £1200 on a Mk2 Golf GL 1.8, I was 20 and had been driving 3 years.
Sticking my parents on as named drivers always brought the cost down, until last year when I hit 25.

My policy this year with AA was 10 quid cheaper arranging it over the phone compared to the quote from Confused.com ?!

There are some specialists, eg HIC, try also Greenlight insurance 0870 7535455 or BrentAcre VW Insurance Specialists

We normally do only use the highest risk driver when calculating premiums but on rare occasions sticking your girlfriend on can sometimes help eg if the system rates her as a slightly higher risk but a couple of our underwriters give female driver discounts so it can actually bring the premium down even though it is rating her as the highest risk (i think they have not noticed that yet ), it does'nt work often though as some of our other underwrites give discounts for just you driving....

Same with putting parents on, usually it wont change the price either way....

This will vary depending on which company you ring though, i am only basing this advise on what happens through us so you may well find different with other companies.....

Hope this helps/makes some sense

When I put my dad on as a named driver (he's an advanced V&A driver for the BTP) my premium went down by £200...

So if it doesn't work often, when it does it can work quite well...

Well, I've managed to get a quote for £900 through confused.com, but I'm going to give Adrian flux a go I think (especially considering I will be getting some coilovers in the not too distant future).

Does everyone generally get competitive quotes from Adrian Flux, or is it just that they'll happily insure modified cars?  A friend of mine is with them, but ironically enough hasn't told them of his mods yet (He has done them since his last renewal though).

If they involved a claim on your insurance at all then they'll certainly not help.  Was that 2K quote with them declared too?

I've got a couple of claims against me, so my premiums are a bit high for someone of my age/experience.  I can't quite work out why I could get a quote for ~£650 on a 1.3 Escort, yet for a 2.8VR6 it's only £900?  (well, the 'scort is fully comp and the Vr6 is TPFT)

Without the claims I could get ~350 to 400 for the 'scort I think.

Flux are our sister company and up til recently we were not allowed to insure our own vehicles and they were the best on mine. They should be worth a try...they insure most things (modded, standard, bikes, classic, kits cars, commercial etc etc)

Always declare mods though.....  :lipsrsealed:

non fault claims normally dont have any effect but obviously if you start having a lot of non fault claims they are going to start and wonder why!

A minor speeding conviction again usually will not make a diffence with us but will vary with insurers....watch out though cos when you start getting a mixture of convictions and claims the premiums can shoot up!
