I'm off to look at a 2013 GTI in Oryx White tomorrow. Seems pretty good. The only thing that's bothering me a little is stonechips. The dealer has sent some photos and I know close ups can make anything look bad but how bad is the Golf for stonechips and is there anything I can do rectify it?
Quite surprised the undercoat is black/grey as I thought it would be white and therefore disguise the chips a little more.
Currently have a 2007 Type R and that is absolutely horrendous for attracting stonechips - the paint seems incredibly thing.
p.s. Is there anything else I should be looking for when viewing?
-
Get the dealer to sort the paint chips - he really should, anyway. Surprised anyone is advertising a car without prepairing it properly, especially one with a £900 pa
-
They said "We will touch up the chips using Oryx White paint - this wont look like a re spray but will take the eye of thee chips with the correct paint"
It's a VW dealership.
I think it's quite normal to leave a car unpreped until it's been sold. Had that on a few cars in the past.
-
"how bad is the Golf for stonechips"?
Quite bad. Soft paint and some sort of weird angle or aero over the front seems to make it a stone chip magnet.
Dark under coat on white Mk7's. White undercoat on the others.
My LSG looks like I've flown through an explosion in a tipex factory.
I've never known anyone with a Oryx Mk7, but my sister has a Toyota in the same pearl white and if the recent body shop respray after a prang is anything to go by, good luck getting a decent match. I think it must be an aged fading problem with the rest of the car in her case. The respray is like new, only the rest isn't new.
-
Sorry about the unfinished post above - iPad froze and wouldn't play!
As said, you would expect a car with a £900 paint option to be immaculate in that respect. I'd suggest getting them to do the chips - they'll have to anyway, and then inspecting the car. If it's not as you want it, walk away. There are plenty more cars out there.
As for other things to check, well, the wheels by the sound of things. The dealers chip guy will probably do those too. Surprised at the dealer, as they do have some really good people doing these things for them and it's best not to see the car before they're properly dealt with. I've seen cars of mine, after dealer prep, and thought that I should have got the cars sorted and kept them!

I had an Oryx White GTI PP and it requires 3 coats , Pure White, Pearlescent coat and lacquer. I am surprised they have said they will touch it up with Oryx White paint as I did not think this was possible? What they will do is probably touch it up with Pure White paint as this is essentially what Oryx is without the pearlescent. Unless of course things have moved on since I had my GTI and you can now smart repair Oryx White?
PS: You cannot buy touch stick for Oryx white either and when you buy spray can for Oryx White you get 3 spray cans consisting of pure white paint, pearl and lacquer.
When I got stone chips I got a Chipex kit for Oryx white and the 3 coats was so hard to achieve a good finish with, I ended using just the pure white which did a good enough job on small chips.
-
Thanks for your help with this. Beginning to think it might not be the one. It'd be alright if the dealership was a short distance away but it's a 3 hour drive. Don't want to get there and realise it's not as good as it looks in the photos.
Not too bothered about this particular colour but the rest of the spec was exactly as I would want; Discover Pro, Performance Pack, Santiago wheels, Dynaudio. Been looking for a while now and quite hard to get one with these options; particularly the larger screen that the Discover Pro provides.
-
NavPro on a Mk7 that old isn't all that (MIB1). Its a bit clunky, not internet connected etc
The MIB2 is more like it was supposed to be and MIB3 looks better still.
Basically, if they want significantly more for a MIB1 NavPro car second hand, don't bother would be my advice...
I believe DynAudio might well be the same, its certainly good from last year, previously opinions seem to vary.
Just some food for thought there...
-
They're asking £17k for it which looking at others on Auto Trader seems pretty good?
What does MIB1,2,3 mean? Forgive my ignorance.
-
There are now plenty of 2014 Golf Rs with around 15-18k miles for not much more money, worth considering?

Yeah, good point. TBH, I've only just started looking and am in no rush for a new (used) car. Still love my Type R so would need to find the right car before giving up that.
Also, just looking at the ad I can see it was first added to Auto Trader on the 17 Jan which is quite a long time so maybe it's not all that. Here's the ad http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201701171395958?make=VOLKSWAGEN%26model=GOLF

Mib is vw slang for the infotainment unit. As well as the model (cms, nav or navpro) they come in generations. 1 was 2013 till end of 2015., 2 was 2016 until this month and 3 is brand new on the face lift. They get better over time.. Bigger screens, more functionality.

Ah ha, thanks for this. Won't be able to afford anything beyond a 2014 model in either GTI or R so I'll have to be happy with MIB1
Just looking at R's now and they're not as expensive as I thought they would be (saying that they are 1 or 2k more than a GTI)
-
The GTi seems over priced, manual gearbox, the R obviously has 4wd and a decent base spec, and 2014 with DSG for about £20k, but I always barter on price. Good luck. P.S. Dealers will have a lot of PXs since 1st March that may not be advertised yet, worthwhile phoning them.

MIB1 was a bit dated compared to what was on offer from others. MIB2 came out in the middle to late 2015 I think and MIB3 is what you get in the new facelift Golf(mentioned here as the Mk7.5)
For the money you're spending I wouldn't rush into a purchase, take your time and ask loads of questions on her to learn about what you need to know on this thread. Lots of very informed people on here.
-
Thanks for this. Yep, decided to hold back on this one and do a bit more research. As I said, no hurry to replace my car anyway. Just fancied a change.
-
A 1st generation nav pro will be fine. I didn't have any issues with mine on my 2013 gtd. It doesn't connect to the internet, so what it's a sat nav and radio unit not a home PC.

Some people might like CarPlay and use a better satnav and a more up-to-date system.

You don't get decent real time traffic, you don't get Google streetview for precision arrivals, you can't connect your phone for anything other than voice.
Two out of three of those are SUPPOSED to work on Navpro MIB1, but they didn't in the UK.
It wasn't worth the £1000+ extra cost over Nav.
MIB2 actually delivers what was promised.
-
Does anybody know the exact dates of MIB1, 2, 3? I'm thinking the cost of getting a car with MIB2 will be outside of my budget but it'd be nice to know what I'm looking for when hunting for a GTI or R.
I think the reason I liked the Pro was the large screen which I thought would be better for SatNav purposes.
-
Its ok for sat nav within the limitations I've described.
You don't use it much on the main screen anyway, with either nav system you get a display between the clocks in front of you which is more useful (I find) that the map thingy anyway.
MIB2 was from around end of 2015/beginning of 2016.
They also at that time created a bundle called "tech pack" which was a very cheap bundle of NavPro MIb2 and DynAudio (never given a variant number, but possibly a Mk2 of that too) for about the cost of the NavPro alone. Therefore there are lots of Mk7's with NavPro and Dynaudio from this period. It was a steal!

You're not wrong about it being a steel, for just over £1200 you got nav pro, dynaudio, app connect and voice activation didn't you.
-
Nav pro always had voice activation. The original poster has already stated that a newer year car is probably out of his price range so with this is mind what I'm saying is an mib1 nav pro isn't that much behind an mib2 version. All you get extra is app connect which to be honest on mine I've never used.
-
MIB2 only appeared in Golf from mid 2015. Week 22 to be exact.

Well, just got back from having a look at a 2014 White R. It was so busy at the dealership in Northampton that I kinda gave up otherwise I would been there forever. It was this one http://usedcars.volkswagen.co.uk/dealer/Golf-GTI/GTD/R/GTE/2.0-TSI-R-300-PS/Northampton/3853633-606186679-47073.aspx?srcmdc=se_ce_re_ - I think the base spec for the R.
Certainly did like the look of it and looks great in white. Saying that I also love the look of the GTI so when I have a bit more time I'll find somewhere that has both in stock - preferably a dealer near country roads so I can give it a real world test - and see which I prefer.
What I did notice is the difference in the cabin from my 2007 Type R. It seems a lot roomier - not sure in a good way or not. I like the way I'm cocooned in my Type R but I'm sure that's just something that I'd get used to as I've had my Civic for 5 years now.
-
The discs look like they have had a hard life on that white R.
I would try to get them replaced of you are interested in the car to avoid expense not too far down the road.
-
Yeah that's what I thought. TBH, I'm not looking at buying this car. Just wanted to have a look at an R close up as I'd only really considered the GTI as I thought the R might be too expensive. I'll do a bit more looking around on this forum and ask (bore to death) other owners ;-) need to decide whether, for the money, I'd be better getting the GTI or R.
-
I can confirm you will not find the cabin space too roomy compared to a Type-R. I had 4x Type-R's prior to buying a GTI PP (2013) I felt like the cabin space was perfect and could not fault the car compared to my Type-R's. I am now driving a Golf R so you can see I now like my Golfs.

There's always plenty of helpful people on here prepared to share experiences, thoughts and opinions, good and bad. You certainly won't bore anyone to death! Also worth looking back a page or two as there has already been an R vs GTI thread recently and many of your questions may have already been covered.
-
Greencode, when you question whether a GTi or an R is better for your money?
I think that is down to you, coming from a Type R you may like the Fwd PP with the Vaq electronic diff, or feel like a change for a 4wd.
I have owned and driven fast compact 4wd cars and for me it all becomes a bit one dimensional. I also prefer the aesthetics of the GTi.
Personally I am not about to move to an R.
Others will have the opposite view which is good, the point being buy what you prefer rather than what you perceive as better for your money.

Thanks for this. I think it's because I'm so used to the Type R now that anything else seems strange. Like throwing away that comfortable pair of shoes and getting a new pair and bedding them in ;-)

Will do, really appreciate yours and everyone else's input.

Yeah, I did test drive a GTI a few months back when I was looking at a GTI or M135 but then stopped looking. When I'm ready I'll have a real world test drive of both and see what I fancy.

I have a workmate who has a JDM Type R with fancy LSD and rock hard suspension.
If you're used to driving a CTR then the power delivery of the GTI will feel a bit funny as it's almost Diesel like (compared to the Honda as opposed to an actual Diesel) in that it does all its stuff low down in the rev range. In that respect the power delivery is very useable in day to day driving but you'll probably find yourself revving the engine far too high and thinking it's a bit flat rather than using the broad spread of torque to catapult you along.
Which is where the R comes in. The R does its best stuff above 4000rpm.

That's the thing with Type R. The V-Tec doesn't kick in until around 7,000 revs and by that time you're generally going well above the speed limit!!

I found much the same thing with the R, although it's an amazingly flexible engine, to get the best out of it you had to be using the full rev range and in which case the speed limits would be exceeded by quite an impressive amount very quickly.
I ended up adding a JB1 tuning box which gave the engine a lot more mid range torque and added a whole new dimension to the power delivery, but in effect I then drove the car like a Diesel riding on the torque and rarely used high revs due to the aforementioned speed limits so it kind of defeated the object of having such an engine...
-
So, I went and had a test drive of both the GTI with performance pack and R - both in white and 3dr Around £19.5k for both (late 2014). TBH, loved them both! I thought my Type R as quick and accelerated well but blimey they were rapid!
The GTI had reverse camera and park assist whereas the R was basic spec.
View them here http://usedcars.volkswagen.co.uk/dealer/Golf-GTI/GTD/R/GTE/2.0-TSI-R-300-PS/Northampton/3853633-606186679-47073.aspx?srcmdc=se_ce_re_ and http://usedcars.volkswagen.co.uk/dealer/Golf-GTI/GTD/R/GTE/2.0-TSI-GTI-230-PS/Northampton/3708607-606214246-47073.aspx?srcmdc=se_ce_re_
Umm, now I'm undecided. Wish I'd never tested both!!

R 4wd!
-
R 4wd!
I think it will be the R in the end. The pull was ridiculous and it looked and sounded great.
Based on insurance, tax and doing 5,000 miles a year it'd be around £275 cheaper than my Type R! The GTI would be a £470 cheaper.
Just wondering as well what are the service prices for the R? Did look at the fixed price service prices on the main VW site but it doesn't include the Golf R.
-
Phone a couple of dealers and ask, believe R is no different to other petrol cars, other than around 4 or 5 yrs the Haldex oil needs changing.
-
Personally if it were me I would get a GTi but not necessarily that one.
-
There will be less GTi's around than R's that's for sure. I can see why people go for the R but there are just too many on the roads now for me.
When I went to see my CS today the sales guy told me they sell around 20 R's a month !!

-
I'm sure its not just me but how many R's v GTi's do you see in a week ?
Although the silly lease deals have no doubt dried up, I am sure that the R doesn't cost much more per month than a GTi PP with the same deposit so presumably that is why a lot of people go for it rather than the GTi ?
I could have had an R for a lot less "per month" than the CS but the monthly cost wasn't the driver for me. I read in autocar that these days almost nobody looks at the total list price of a car ( I must be one of the few that does), simply the monthly PCP payment because they are so popular now.

I parked beside a night blue R yesterday and from the front my GTD looked better. Got a miles or so down the road and my wife asked me why I didn't take a photo
