You need mud flaps :D
Will take photos of mine tomorrow after a wash
-
That's made me feel much better about the state of my GTI, thanks! Mine hasn't been washed for nearly a month including a week in Cornwall but doesn't look too bad as it turns out
-
That is pretty disgusting Rebecca
Mine's never been as dirty (or as shiny) as your car

I'd rather the detritus as above than a stupid couple bits of plastic ruining the lovely line of the wheel arch.
Get your dirty car pics up....

Lol. Mine also a month sans wash. That dead worm on the passenger front wing is now well and truly welded to the paint. It started off looking reasonably healthy for a deceased worm..

Wormwatch continues...

Golfs from the MKI onwards have always looked better dirty.Especially the dirt collecting back end.Mk2s were the best for it.
I used to wash my number plate and rear lights when it got really bad.Left the rest.Didn't want to scratch the paintwork.Plus it just added to it's coolness!.
The rear wash/wipe just added to the chaos!.
-
Ahh yes, mk2 Golfs, I think I had four of those in all.
You just had to wash the damn things, then gently drive up the road and it's already have a layer of crud on the back window and rear panel.
Ms. B, I'm surprised you've not swapped your posh mats out for the OEM ones for winter already.
I'm sure you'll be teasing us with super clean shots on Sunday, if not before!
How did that worm get there? And more importantly, how did it stay there?!! You'd expect it to flick up off the tyre and bounce off the paintwork. Maybe his guts leaking out glued him to the car?
Any David Attenborough's on board kind enough to explain how Mr Wormy stuck fast and defied gravity?
-
Booth: Where have you been to have picked up that much dirt in a single day? You do wash and polish your car daily, right?

Mr Ex, I did swap them over couple weeks ago but decided to put these ones back in. The original mats don't have the thick heel pad and aren't and as comfy underfoot - important during winter months when you spend quite a lot of time out tramping around fields in the freezing cold. So these are now my winters and I'll get a new set for summer.
Don't worry I'll spare you the clean pics when it eventually does get washed. You all know what it looks like.
I expect Mr Wormy has leaked his guts and is now glued on. I'm expecting a squiggly bit of etching under him when he finally is removed.

Twice a day actually.
I took it to Hell and back. I have renamed it 'Event Horizon'

Mine is reasonably clean after my keying damage got fixed last week. I'm pleased to report that the repair is almost perfect. A different chipsaway franchise quoted me half the price of the other 2 places as he'd done a Lapiz blue before and said it was a relatively easy colour to match (surprisingly). He was confident that he would only need to do the rear quarter panel and blend in a little of the roofline. He was right. There's only 2 tiny pinhole sized voids in the lacquer layer (they aren't up to the surface of the rest of the paint) - looks like 2 tiny bubbles in the lacquer layer have burst to leave that void. It will need 2 miniscule dabs of lacquer to fill in. I've looked at it in bright sunlight, overcast and under LED lighting at night, it looks perfect for match and top layer texture matches the rest of the car. All that and all my stonechips seen to for £160.

We knew you'd planned the dirty pics just so you could do the clean ones!!
Amazing as ever.
Nearly as amazing as your lunch breaks must be if you had time to pop home and do that!!
No wonder my council tax is so high!!
It's good to see Mr Wormy didn't leave any fossilised remains too.
I was stuck in traffic last night behind an A180 in met black which had just pulled out of a car "wash" and I was admiring its swirls lit up by my xenons. Obviously I immediately thought of your car at that point Ms B and the difference between a good black cleaning regime and a typical car owners cleaning regime.
The xenons also picked out those triangulated Civic-esque exhausts that the new new Mk7's will be getting by the looks of it.
Obviously we know the triangulated sections are just shiny trims but my headlights picked out how tiny the actual exhausts were tucked away almost hidden.
So let us make the most of having four proper exhaust tips that are real exhausts while we still can!
I wonder if they'll put fake exhausts on high end models when we are all driving electric cars in a few years time as a bit of "heritage"?

You do me an injustice Mr Ex. I hadn't planned to wash it till next weekend but an unexpected cancelled meeting at work meant I could take some of my accrued time off in-lieu (they owe me hours and hours!) and de-worm the R. So I grabbed that opportunity as the thought of another week of it in such a state was to much to bear! I wasn't going to bother posting any pics but after having to give it 2 washes (it was dirtier than it looked in the pics) and saying farewell to Mr Worm (jet washed into oblivion) I felt it was justified, lol.
Please don't mention those triangular tailpipe trim thingys. I really cannot come to terms with those on a Golf.

Yes, I'd noticed that on the Canterbury Council twitter feed:
"Park bench painting committee meeting postponed due to chairman-lady being called away on urgent business due to a rare fossilised worm being discovered within the city, the 'what colour brown shall we paint the benches before the gov't removes yet more funding' meeting will be rescheduled at some point before the next round of gov't cuts"
I'm all eyes and ears me!

I can't believe you can't believe I clean it through winter, lol. I do not subscribe to the 'leave it all winter, the dirt will protect it theory'.
-
I no longer subscribe to leaving it for 6 months either. I left it the first year and the paint felt terrible in March, so didn't do it again and won't leave it so long this time.
I have just completed its full clean since spring this year (SF,wash, korrosol, tardis, clay, detox, hand polish,2 coats of HD wax)ready for winter and while its quiet therapeutic, a day and a half is not something I want to tackle too often, but I worry about doing a quick winter wash being worse for the paint without the full works.
Whats your quick routine? Without introducing too many scratches, being a black car you must need to be even more careful?

Depends what you mean by quick routine. I do exactly what I do in the warmer months, with a couple of tweaks and slightly less frquently due to weather constraints and the fact I have to do all my detailing outside on the driveway so am at the mercy of the weather. As a rule, I don't really do a half interim washes like some do, i.e, jet washing and snow foaming then leaving it, I prefer do a full wash, but if the weather prevents this then it's better than nothing to tide over until I can do a proper wash. A month between proper snow foam+2 BW washes is the very longest I would leave it.
Twice a year, Post and Pre winter (Spring and Autumn) it gets the full works (like you have just done) then it's a case of regular maintenance washes and protection top ups as required. A winter maintenance wash is exactly the same as summer with a couple of extra considerations.
The snow foam stage is particularly important to remove as much salt and winter grit and grime at the 'touchless stage of the wash' and I often do a double snowfoam in winter if I feel it's needed. But it's business as usual albeit with colder hands which a pair of nitrile gloves help keep a bit warmer. I always use 2 lambswool washmitts in winter - one for the upper panels and another for the lower panels. My exterior winter maintenance wash routine goes like this (takes about 1-1.5 hours with a couple of tea stops):
Wheels pre wash spray on wheel cleaner- diluted 1:10 or less as required
Snow foam using lance (with pressure washer)
Pressure wash rinse
Wash wheels (wheel brush/wheel mitt) use separate bucket to rest of car
2 Bucket wash (with grit guards and lambswool mitt) - one mitt for roof and upper panels, second mitt for lower panels - starting from top down - roof - upper sections of car first, lower (dirtiest) sections of car last
Pressure wash rinse
Final rinse with open ended hose to reduce standing water to a minimum
Dry - blot dry with MF towels/Metrovac air dryer for water traps etc
External glass clean
Dress tyres
Metal polish tailpipes
Bodywork / glass / wheel protection topped up as required.

All sounds good, and makes me think I am on similar lines, apart from the air dyer and chrome exhaust tips. For some reason I REALLY dislike chrome on my car so i leave them to get as "Eau Naturelle" as possible.
I clean a just a little less frequent, but the car is garaged and doing 50 miles a week only, i guess the Da polisher corrects anything you get on the car over the winter . I keep looking at them but shy away each time i build up to it...

A DA is one of those things that you have a fear of until you get one and then you realise it's no big deal and you can't really go wrong. Keep it simple to start, a DA machine and a couple of pads and polishes then add to it if required as you get more confidence. And if you are a little nervous then get a few practice runs in on a lesser car so to speak. I cut my DA teeth on my other half's van just to get used to the weight of the machine and arm pressure etc.
Have a look in these threads for some guidance on DA and tips for usage.

My Pre-winter full detail including DA polish, has had to be postponed due to weather, work and family commitments so it looks likely I'll have to do my planned DA polish in early spring but not a problem. Car will be kept well protected during winter. It is in need of a polish now, up till recently it was faring very well on the swirl front, but when it went into the bodyshop for repair a few months ago, despite being asked only to clean the areas they needed to to do the repairs, for some reason they washed and waxed the entire car! Unfortunately in doing this they managed to inflict a some swirls so it needs a polish to get rid of them. I was annoyed but they are a good bodyshop otherwise so not worth falling out over and rectifiable.

I believe the rental it is white, currently enjoying a diet of A and B roads on its its winter set up.
The aftermarket alloys and stock ride height are not offending me either with the slightly lower offset

I'll play. Don't think the car has ever been this dirty. Not been washed for 5 weeks now, and over 2000 miles.
Must try and do it this weekend (by the way, the wheels did get a quick once over last weekend, so that's just a week's worth of grime)
Unlike Rebecca, I don't have any afters....yet !

Guaranteed scratched rear glass ( although I'm sure you'd buff them out with your trusty DA )

Using your car regularly I find its no too difficult to get the rear filthy like that in the curent weather until it gets its clean.
I have no qualms using the rear wipe/wash which gives plenty of wash fluid onto the rear screen as part of the wipe if you use the full on push of the stalk.
Have had no issues of scratched rear glass myself & probably a bit OCD when it comes to such matters.

Smearing dirt across anything will result in scratches sooner or later.

Same here. Never ever had a scratched rear screen using rear wash/wipe, and used it on plenty of cars this dirty or dirtier, and like you a little OCD about car things. It takes a lot to scratch glass.
-
Smearing dirt across anything will result in scratches sooner or later.
Thats true but if you use your wash/wipe system as designed you can minimise the possibility.
I use 2Cv3 sealant on the rear screen as protectorate which works well.
At the end of the day I prefer not to be driving about with a totally dirt blacked out rear screen, in these current conditions, worrying about using the rear wash/wipe.
To me its more important on my travels to keep some rear vision for obvious reasons.
-
Also use C2v3 on all my glass although currently got another glass sealant on atm that I'm trying out for a detailing company, but both provide good protection, and as said the lubrication of screen wipe is the way to to it.
Ridiculous to drive around at this time of year in challenging light conditions and darker evenings with a rear screen you can't see out of. In this case, if the 'detailing' is at the expense of driving safety then it's gone too far.
-
I've read daft things on these forums but not using the rear wiper if the window is dirty (i.e. when you most need it) takes the biscuit!!
My rear end looks a lot like Rebecca's (ooh err!) at the moment. Haven't washed it in 5-6 weeks. It's impossible to find the time at this time of year when you work office hours, it's dark at 4pm... and then your weekends are filled with other stuff and/or the weather's too crap to bother. Hoping to find time this weekend but it'll be ruined again within 24 hours!

After years of MK2's and Rados that I de-wipered at the rear and lately lugging a trailer round in the Tranny I've got used to not using the rear wiper.
Scared me to death when the MK7 decided to turn it on by itself the other day.

You can code out the 'auto when reverse is selected' rear wiper function using VCDS. At least then you only use it when you are happy that the screen is wet enough to risk a wipe.

Since fitting a dashcam (again) - i'm ensuring my windscreen and rear window are iimmaculately clean - I have probably doubled my screenwash use!

I've read daft things on these forums but not using the rear wiper if the window is dirty (i.e. when you most need it) takes the biscuit!!

I've not washed my car in nearly 2 months but I always find 2 minutes to hose the dirt and grit off the windows. It's just common sense.

I've had Golf's for 10 years and I've never scratched any window with the wiper, and the rear end of every Golf attracts dirt like no other. I can see how it might happen if the blade was in bits but otherwise you'd be very unlucky to do any noticeable damage.

More likely to scratch the front windscreen where a stone fragment could hit it from the car in front and sit on the screen and be dragged across it by a wiper blade sweep.

What's common sense is using that thing that cleans the screen - the wiper.
-
My A3's windows got scratched to death so it's common sense not to make the same mistake twice.
Each to their own, and I suppose if it's a lease car( like the majority on here) who gives a sh!t anyway
And before you bite Rebecca, I know yours isn't a lease
-
Neither's mine and the window is scratch free. ETTO as you say. We all have our "things"...

?? What does it matter how you pay for your car?

Likewise..

It must just be a window cleaners thing then.
-
The risk is minimal. Mine gets cleaned with the wiper generally only once a day and that is first thing in the morning when the rear windscreen is completely wet with exterior condensation and that, coupled with a the screen wash makes for scratch free swiping.

Last week’s cleanliness was short-lived.

I know you'll never see it this way but it's a protective layer of dirt
Mine is the same - got Monday off so hopefully a good detail is due!

This thread is definitely not office safe - you dirty b@stards!

I'll have to take a pick of the R estate, it is so dirty I am contemplating to cultivating the filth and taking it to Pistonheads Sunday Service at Prodrive instead of the BMW
The Estate nicely collects dirt in the centre of the tailgate and back bumper
I do try to jest wash the worst off but just not had a chance
