Glad I stuck with getting a Golf R, I would be seriously pee'd off if I had bought a normal Clubsport only to find the S version is what the Clubsport should have been in the first place!
Volkswagen have lost the plot! Both in terms of pricing and equipment / spec!
-
Making it limited edition... Surely apart from handiling the clubsport will map the same as the clubsport s, unless theyve changed some engine components

From what I have read, they are saying the Clubsport S will have the full beans and not a 290ps over-boost setup, no rear seats with roll-cage, revised tweaks, lighter overall which is true Clubsport ethos.
The standard Clubsport was a half-effort, hence why a lighter S is being talked about.
It will be good on track but as a everyday proposition the Golf R is the one to get.
-
This is getting very confusing now,
Maybe they should have renamed the Clubsport as an Edition40 anniversary model to celebrate the GTI brand
R as a non-limited run performance model
Clubsport S as bespoke track toy
-
I ordered a Clubsport and I'm not pee'd off in the slightest.
I could of got an R for less money (same options) but wanted a GTi.
The Clubsport S is a track based car, but I wanted a road based car as I have a dedicate track only car.
I'm happy to have a GTI
Granted its a small niche between them all now, but its a niche none the less and they will sell all I am sure.
Dave
-
How long until the Clubsport RS is announced!? ;)
-
I'm about surprised by the expected 5,000 units. Not very limited??
-
It appears the rumour mills are stating the Clubsport S will be 306bhp. So that makes it a GTI outputting a higher bhp than a Golf R of the same mark. With this in mind when is the R400 going to come out. I suspect on the Clubsport S, VW will charge for the privilege of removing the rear seats and ripping the air con out

Definately charge for less.
The r400 is something id like to get a closer look at.

I am in the same situation (ordered a clubsport) and I fully agree.
The only thing what I wonder: would VW not consider to keep the CS as a seperate series? Maybe that is the reason why it's not called "edition 40"... If they see it's profitable...

VW Press release about forthcoming Worthersee release...
"Mk7 Golf GTI / 2012. The seventh generation of the GTI launches in 2012 with two levels of power output: 162 kW / 220 PS2 from the base version and 169 kW / 230 PS3 from the Golf GTI Performance, the latter being equipped with a new front-axle differential lock. Based on this model there then follows in early 2016 the Golf GTI Clubsport, delivering via a boost function up to 213 kW / 290 PS. It blurs the boundaries with motorsport. The special edition of the Golf GTI Clubsport being unveiled in a few days' time on the shores of Lake Wörthersee will now break them down."
Makes sense in some ways, they have cut the R400, and now all the stuff that is not standard on the clubpsport, bucket seats, prets with Cup tyres can now be standard on this with a higher engine PS and price tag.
Wonder what the R owners are going to make of this....

Bang on.
If the regular Clubsport had half a climbing frame in the back I'd have probably gone for a GTI PP.

I would imagine an R owner isn't bothered in the slightest - the Clubsport S is a stripped out car with no back seats, air con etc - its pointless as a daily drive.
-
Correct, I'm getting the Golf R for it all year all weather ability, as a daily car it'll be the better option than the Clubsport / S as my standing GTI PP struggles to put the power down in anything but dry weather. Imagine 265/290/306ps via FWD.
-
Mk2 Rallye and mk3 vr6 owners weren't too bothered about the g60 limited were they? That was the king of the castle until the r32 could beat it's power output over a decade later.
Everyone in the Renault world likes the r26r and trophy r but they mostly buy the normal Renault sport megane as they have to do a job not just be toys. I'd think it will be a very similar reaction.
-
I'll be all over it if I can afford one!

Good point, even with Evo's gushing praise, Renault couldn't shift the R26R in the UK and had to send unsold cars back to France.
We all like a special GTI but what's the point of having one that is compromised for daily use/carrying passengers and yet is never gonna be a serious choice for track use?
Apparently they are going for the new front wheel drive 'ring record, no doubt at the expense of a lot of road usability.
-
On the Worthersee stand now Clubsport S.

(taken from a German site, no idea how accurate that data is)
-
Hows it faired against the other hatchbacks though? As isnt that the reason theyve made this
-
IIRC the last best was a prototype Civic Type R at 1.50.6 something.
Has the ring not been closed for times laps since then?
Dave
-
True. A quick scope on the times (May have missed one) shows megane trophy as the fastest production car time.
But even so it seems they have done what they set out to acheive
-
I think the tyres are the question.
Megane Trophy on semi slicks, Clusport S on Trackday Cup Tyres....
Dave
-
Yeh your probally right there. Tyres play a big part.

Golf GTI Clubsport S unveiled at Wörthersee
04 May 2016
Most powerful production Golf GTI packs 310PS engine
GTI fans will get their first look at the Golf GTI Clubsport S at the annual Wörthersee GTI meet today (Wednesday 4 May).
This is following the announcement that the Golf GTI Clubsport S has set a Nurburgring record for the fastest lap time in a front-wheel-drive production car in a time of 7:49:21.
With only 150 to be built for the UK, the Clubsport S will be the rarest Golf GTI in history. Global production will be capped at 400 units.
The Clubsport S builds on the already special Golf GTI Clubsport Edition 40, which is the most powerful production Golf GTI.
This car will be available exclusively as a 3-door manual only with a 310PS version of the 2.0 TSI engine.
Important dates
Production – from week 36 2016 to week 49 2016
Product and marketing
Exact price and specification of the Clubsport S is yet to be confirmed, but the car has bucket seats as standard, 19-inch alloys, Dynamic Chassis Control, black roof and will be individually numbered 1 to 400 on a silver coloured plate on the centre console.
Options
No car configurator will be available because on the limited production volume of the Clubsport S. More details will follow when they are confirmed.
This exclusive edition is only available in three colours:
Tornado red
Pure white
Deep black
More details on the Golf GTI Clubsport S will be published when they are available.
-
Is there a technical reason why they are putting the Clubsport s into production? 100 into the uk is barely a blip on the rader. Does it help for other reasons? I notice on the you tube videos there is a big disclaimer stating that it is not in production yet.
-
Maybe to fill a production car criteria?
Press release also does not mention it only has front seats, wonder if it will come with rears then, as its pretty important fact.

Thats exactly how read this when heard of it, the ClubSport S is track day and would be really difficult to live with as a 'normal' car unless single or where girlfriend/boyfriend, family, passengers and comfort are bottom of your care about list.
-
Totally appeals to me and the lack backseats mean better for Ikea, do not think it will be hard to live with if you can put up with two seats, always liked the Mini GP concept, I've spoken toy dealer about one to see what the likely hood is of getting one, all be it M2 turns up at the beginning of November

Here's where your flatpack shelving can go.

The rear 'door' cards still have armrests in them and the parcel shelf supports are still there. It looks like a home built conversion, not a factory built track car.

Youd think that they would save some money and just take all the unused plastics out
-
Got to admit some bare metal in the back would be nice.
-
Yeh... Stripped out for a track car. Buy a clubsport s, get it home and get the tool kit out to pull the rest of the inside out that vw put in. Haha
