Hi all
I've aware that there are a couple of threads running with this question. Apologies for posting another.
I'm feeling a little baffled...sorry, it's a long one!!
OK, two weekends ago I signed on the dotted line for a Golf GTi (Performance Pack, Metallic, DCC, Tech Pack, Parking Pack), 6k miles/year. Got an OK deal. Order wasn't submitted to VW yet but cash deposit taken.
£29746.50
£4k partex
£549 cash deposit
£1250 from VW
£12735 GFV (base model example with 10k on VW site is £11291.40)
Meaning I'm borrowing £23927.40 over 49 months. Works out at £328.50/month.
So...as per the other thread, I decided to look into the Golf R...(DCC, Tech Pack)
GFV on VW site is £13819 (10k miles, base model). The finance quote provided by dealer has the GFV at £13252. Despite me doing 6k miles and having ~3k worth of options (aware that options may not increase GFV). Meaning that I'm borrowing more money. I'd have expected the dealer GFV to be in the same ballpark difference as the GTi (£1500 more than VW site).
Feel like the dealers are trying to make the R deal look unattractive vs GTi.
Any thoughts?

I would imagine that because of the flood of R's because of Leasegate, the GTI sales have suffered - hence the better deals available on GTI's as VW want to flog them instead. If you read through some of the threads on here most people will say they see far more R's than they do GTI's on the roads, which backs this up.
Whichever car you go for you'll love though

I just can't understand why the dealer would have GFV approx £1500 lower than VWFS state. Means I borrow more, monthly payments are higher (by £30+). Which would probably be enough to tip me towards the R. Obviously I'd have less equity at the other end...*shrugs*
-
I wouldn't trust the website too much - its pants!
-
I don't understand why it would be different from the VW site either.
When I was getting quotes left right and centre before committing to the GTD, every PCP quote I got had the exact same GFV to the penny. If they aren't giving you anything off why don't you try another few dealers or are they giving you a decent price as P/X?
Have you also tried carwow as the dealers on that will give you a price for a trade in.

GeordieSPG's figures look about right to me, considering we are talking about a 4 year term and not a 3 year term. Either car will be worth about 45% of RRP at 4 years old. The R costs about £4k more than a basic GTI, around £3k more than a PP GTI, and about £1100 extra retained vs the GTI with more options. Those options (PP aside, which depreciates as per the car) will retain about 20% of their RRP on a personalised GFV, so the £1350 GFV difference expected is eroded a little by the extra options on your GTI, £1100-1200 extra seems about right.

It was the difference in the R GFV which confuses me. The GTi was fair. The R GFV from the dealer was about 1500 too low in my opinion (and based upon VWFS figures from calculator).
Nevermind. Order for GTi has gone to VW now. Deal done.
Know for next time to do more research.

What is your basic car spec again?3dr/5dr? Manual/DSG?
R 3dr manual on 4 year terms and 10k miles pa GFV = £12797, figure around £13500 for 6k miles pa terms.
Seems like your dealer has lowballed the GFV, moreso if the R you quoted for was 5dr and/or DSG. (excuse my previous post updates, i'm a little pissed after drinking in Tynemouth most of this afternoon).

GTi 3dr. PP. DSG. DCC. Tech Pack. Parking pack. Metallic.
R 3dr. DSG. DCC. Tech Pack.
Both 48 months. Both 6k miles.
Not entirely sure why they lowballed the GFV unless it was to put me off the R (targets etc).

Really not sure why they did that either - might be worth a look at Pulman and see what they offer you against an R (if you really want to see what they can do for an R), they might be more amenable.
My salesman of choice, Mick Stones is now at the Durham branch and he's open to discounts if you have done your homework (knowing what the broker discounts are etc). He would almost certainly go out of his way to beat Benfield by a margin on the total "cost to change", whether that be by offering more p/x or more discount on the new one. When my Dad chopped in his 6 year old MK5 Golf 170TDI GT DSG with 123k miles on the clock, Mick was upfront enough to say it was too old for it to be on their forecourt and so my Dad might get considerably more than the £5700 p/x selling privately. For my last 3 cars I have gone with Mick at Pulman for a significantly better deal than Benfield could provide.

I would recommend giving carwow a shot as well.
https://www.carwow.co.uk/
I used this site the other day and secured a really good price a new GTI polo for my mum.

Annoyingly carwow and the like don't have the latest configurator options, so it's really a pain to get the right price...

Annoying yes. But once you have a good discounted price in from a carwow dealer, simply contact them through the website and get them to send you a formal quote with the correctly priced config options.
A 15% discount should be achievable.

Which other brokers are recommended?
Thanks

Orangewheels are worth trying and Drive The Deal.
I used Orangewheels and my local dealer matched it.

I had quotes from Orangewheels, DTD and various Carwow dealers. DTD were the best for discount off a new R at 12%, and that's who I went with. But, they don't do px whereas many of the carwow dealers do, and as the 'cost to change' is the important thing that's something to consider.

Never heard of a discount to that degree - around 12.2 is the maximum in my experience. Are you factoring in the VWFS deposit contribution to get that?
-
There was no dealer contribution when I got mine.

15 % ? can you let me know the name of the dealer please ?

A bit cheesed off with it all to be honest. Still torn between the two cars. And the 5-8 month wait makes me want to vomit to be honest :-P
I think I'll go buy a BMW.

If you're serious about a BMW, get rid of your car privately, some of the performance diesel BMWs like the 330D and 335D X-drive have 24.5% off at coast2coast cars (broker) - you won't get half of that off at Coopers/Stratstone in Tyne/Wear (I enquired).

Put the wheels in motion to tidy up our current golf and get rid another way. Privately or WBAC type.
I am interested in 335d to be honest. Problem is that there are like a bajillion options and they start seriously bumping the price up quite quickly.

You could leave the options alone (or most of them) - there's a fair bit of genuinely useful standard equipment, most of the things you'd need to spec are quite cheap options and metallic paint is "free".

Yes this included the £1250 contribution (finance offer only).

Your get 18% min discount easily off a 335d m sport.
Remember the ride height is a little on the high side with the 335d x drive. Personally I'd go for the 330d m sport.

That was VW Ashford.

Better off using Drive the Deal - the VWFS deposit contribution is common to any deal involving finance (apart from GTD and R models).

Looking at about 11k off a 335d and 5.4% apr. Ride height is a problem, but to be honest not something which would bother me massively. I reckon monthly payments would be similar to the R. 0-60 is the same. 40mpg vs 30mpg. Handling, the R probably takes it. But I think the BMW would win on comfort. Hmmm.

The 4 series Grand Coupe 330d m sport would be my choice!

Last time I looked, the 4 series didn't have nearly as much money off as the 3 series - must be easily shifted at 12% discount.
