Hi Guys & Gals,
New to the forum. Bit of a VW nut. Just recently traded in my Stage 2 Candy White Polo 6R GTI (which was my pride & joy for the past 3 years) for a 59 plate MK6 GTI in Reflex Silver, back in Dec 2014. Love how well the golf holds the road, and performance isn't as bad as i thought it would be coming from a 240bhp 7 Speed DSG pocket rocket.
Had a few VW's now, all the previous being Polos ( 9n3 1.9 TDI Sport, 9n3 1.8T 20V GTI and the latter 6R 1.4 TSI GTI)
Standard options on the golf are:
* Factory tints
* Leather heated seats (which are amazing on these cold north west mornings)
Mods already done
* Fitted an RNS510
* Fitted Cruise control
* VCDS Tweaks
* LED Numberplate Lamps
* Pressed plates
Just this week I've had the all so famous timing chain rattle haunt me, so thats just been done. New chain, tensioner and guide rails fitted. They also found a faulty VVT valve, so that got changed whilst it was all stripped down. Car sounds much nicer / smoother on start up now, and I'm also sleeping much better at night
Future Mods
* 18" Alloys and New tyres - Really can't decide which alloys suit the relax silver
* Xenon DRL headlights
* R Style LED Tail Lights
* Air Intake
* Stage 1 Remap (APR, REVO or Custom Code - Undecided)
Anyway, ill leave it at that for now. Couple of pictures below of the Polo and my new project for all you pic whores

Welcome, two cracking looking cars there
Sounds like you've not wasted much time getting started on the golf. At least you don't have to worry about the tensioner now (hopefully). The leather looks in good condition for a 59 plate. Some really show their age being very saggy and creased, but that looks good.
How does it feel after a 7 speed DSG? Suppose it might feel a bit lacking in power after the nimble polo, but the map should sort that out. Post up a few pics of possible alloy choices to get opinions, unless you'd rather not hear them
Look forward to seeing how it progresses and of course more pics (from a self confessed pic whore)

Need help with the xenon mod am your expert  Kidding!!!

The Polo GTI looks really nice, especially with the xenons.
How is it you didn't go for a new new Polo GTI?
What was the reliability like on your twin charged engine?
I bet it shifted when remapped!
Many many moons ago I had a 1.8T Polo GTI not too long after they came out in about 2007. Mine was an ex-VW press fleet car i think as I bought it a few months old and it had a similar reg to the cars in the magazine road tests. It had a high spec and depreciated very little in my ownership.
I ran VW Evolo 17" alloys and treated it to a dash of REVO.
The thing was hilarious once remapped but the driving position hurt my back for some reason so I sold it after a year and a bit. Old age must've been creeping in even back then!
Anyway, nice silver mk6 GTI, looks a good base for a project.
My first mk6 was silver and after trying several (about seven!) different sets of wheels on it I can safely say that anthracite grey looked the best.
The final set I had on it when I moved it on were grey VW Racing spec Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2's.
They looked really good against the silver.
VW Rotary 18s would look good but are a bit pricey bought new.
A set of grey BBS CKs would also look nice...
-
I had a 6R Polo until recently (an ordinary 1.4) before upgrading to the Golf, but I did consider a Polo GTI because used examples were coming down in price nicely. I could have lived with the DSG gearbox even though I've always driven a manual, however it was the reported oil consumption problems that put me off, how was yours?
I also considered the BlueGT as well because it's quick and has that appealing ACT engine, but for the same money I thought the Golf would be a better overall choice.
I loved my Polo even though it was a bit slow. I covered 30,000 miles in it in just over 2 years and it was very reliable.
Good luck.
-
That Polo sounds rad, im sure the Golf will be even better! Look forward to the updates. Welcome to the fold.
-
Thanks for all the welcomes guys.
The polo wasn't too bad on oil to be honest. The day i picked it up from the garage it had 4 miles on the clock, i let the engine get to temperature and gave it a good kicking from the offset. If i remember correctly, it only ever used 3 litres in 40k miles. The only real issue i had with the car was the DSG box. In the early days it liked to lock out into safe mode in the most dangerous / awkward positions, I.E. pulling out of a busy junction, where the car would loose all drive. You had to push it back into Park and then back to drive for it to reset. After many months of argumentes and strong letters to VW customer services it finally got plugged in to VW Germany HQ computers for diagnostics where they altered the coding on the DSG box. Since that day it never really skipped a beat.
The car was very quick, certainly made a lot of jaws drop from the lights. Standard they are 6.9 secs to 60. This was sub 5 secs, and the DSG pops with the Milltek sounded awesome
Only reason i never went for the new Polo GTI is because I've always loved the golfs, and after 3 polos i think the time had finally come to move on. When i saw this golf, and like Booth11 mentioned, the leather looked in really good condition for a 5 year old car, i just had to have it. I travelled all the way to Crawley from manchester for it  But the drive home was great, fell in love straight away.
Ive got a few alloys in mind, will grab a couple of pics and post them up see what you guys think. Main ideas are the Glen alloys (Edition 35) either in silver, gunmetal or even diamond cut face. Always loved the BBS CK's just don't know how they'd look against the silver. And finally the new RS4 & S3 alloys, but can't seem to find any pics of the MK6 fitted with some.
Look forward to hearing all your thoughts  Cheers Nathan

Nice taste in VWs!
How does the performance compare at stock since they are both rated 6.9s? Do you miss not having the DSG on the Golf?
-
Personally I would pop some black gloss alloys on that! Would look naughty!!! some leds rear lights and leave it bar the engine..possibly wind deflectors? the gti inserts for the seats? some gti matts? upgrade interior lights to ledS? sticker here or there. just done exact same to mine  the polo looked class!
-
Gun metal grey BBS alloys would look he tits!
-
These would look Great

Neuspeed RSe14 Gunmetal, 8x19 et45,57.1 bore, takes Factory mk6 VW centre cap and also the MK7 cap fits perfect, uses original bolts too.weight is just over 9 kg so 2kg saving over most vw wheels and bbs.
-
I love those mate. They are pretty much what I have my mind set on. The edition 35 style 'Glen' alloys. Where did you find these at bud? I also very much like the thought of these, but I can't seem to find any pics on a silver mk6. Wish I was good with photoshop  (http://i1233.photobucket.com/albums/ff400/nmavs/image_zpsdf12f254.jpg) (http://s1233.photobucket.com/user/nmavs/media/image_zpsdf12f254.jpg.html)

I do kind of miss the dsg. Was a lot of fun shifting with the paddles when going for a spirited drive, but it just lacks that 'connected' feeling you get when shifting with the manual. Polo would run rings round the golf standard, but hopefully with a nice intake and a good map that should sort it out. Even standard the polo was very quick, but that's just down to the DSG I would think.

I'm deffo going to get the little seat inserts and the sill protectors. I agree, that little bits like that do feel to make a huge difference to the looks. Had wind deflectors on the polo but I ended up having to repair the windows regulator as it snapped from the pressure of sealing against the plastic after a while, and that is a job I wouldn't rush into doing ever again haha. My next buy is going to be a new set of alloys and tyres, then the rear and front Lamps.
-
Hi Mavs, welcome!! Polo looked mint, I've got the RS4 rims on my motor, take a gander at my newbie post a while back (albeit this is my 4th post..... :lipsrsealed: )
Not the best pics as they are at an angle but you can get the idea.
-
Hi Woodstock. Thanks man, just seen the pics of your GTI. Looks wicked on those RS4 alloys, really stand out against the black. ( Kind of wish id of held out for a black one now  ) Got my mind working overtime now, so many wheels to choose from.
-
Great taste I must say, Let me know how the Xenon mods go! I'm looking at doing it as well but I'm not looking forward to taking the car apart!
-
Welcome! Lovely car, great colour :)
Defo Gun Metal or Anthracite. Don't go black against silver.
Here's mine with anthracite:

Haha thanks man. Yeah will do, hoping to get a set within the next month or so. Will post up some pictures when I get around to sorting them. Looking at the how to guides there doesn't look to be too much involved to fit them.

Your car looks awesome mate. Love the stance you have going on. How would you rate the suspension setup? I went through two sets of springs / damper setups on the polo, handled great but was so harsh on the roads. Must say, if love to drop the golf a few mm but really don't want to kill the comfy ride I now have

Its harsher, but everyone's opinion on harshness is different, driving motorways and a roads is great, if going gets bit bumpy you can definitely feel it compared to stock, more than tolerable for the 2k Miles a month I do though personally for me.

Well, i think anything has to be more comfortable than what the polo was. It was really harsh. I do about 20 miles a day in mine, down rough main roads, so i think i may just have to see how it sits on the new 18" alloys when i get them. :undecided:

So after a couple of weeks of searching around, i finally got my hands on a set of genuine R LED Tails in exceptionally good condition (Big thanks to Jon ), and also a set of Bi-Xenon LED DRL Headlights.
Managed to get the headlights fitted in about 2 hours, taking my time. My OCD also kicked in midway, so ended up cleaning bits of the bumper which you would never even see  And fitted the tail lights within about 20 minutes.
Both really quite straight forward, it was the coding that caused me the most pain and headache, but it seems as though I've finally got there with the help of Alan (Cheers matey) and various threads. Everything seems to be working as it should, no bulb out errors and the tail lights are the correct brightness.
Both units have really transformed the look of the car, looks so much unto date, and rather mean looking. Couple of teaser pics below.
Next buy will be the alloys and a set of rubber, but I've also found myself missing some noise, so an intake and possible middle box removal could be on the cards before i look for a remap
Thats all for now guys and girls, comments are always welcomed

Looking sweet!
-
Mavs the car looks great  The LEDs really transform it. Those DRLs look much whiter/bluer than OEM ones, which are quite yellowy next to the xenons. Like too see a pic of it with the xenons lit too.
Looking forward to watching how your car progresses. have you decided which alloys (and tyres) you're getting?
Btw, the pressed plates look
-
Looks good! The LED tails and the bi xenon lights really make the car. Happy to have helped.
-
Were you end up getting the xenon's from?

Thanks Booth  Yeah they look great I think, will try and take a good picture later on with the xenon's switched on. They are a good cooler match to the LED bulbs. Like you say, the OEM ones are boarder line yellow, where as these are more white, with a tinge of blue. The pictures don't do the cool justice to be honest.
As for the tyres and alloys, still not 100& sure. Tyres are going to be either Conti Sport Contact 5's or Michelin pilot sport 3's. Alloys, I still very much love the diamond cut Monza's, but I think its going to be the Glen Watkins, with diamond cut face. Want to keep it looking OEM.
Were you end up getting the xenon's from?
They are the ones from Xenonz UK, but I bought them from a guy on ebay only 12 weeks old. Like brand new!
-
What's the crack with them come MOT time, done much reading on it?
-
How did you get on with coding?
I have a 59 plate with same headlights, I had to tell the car it didn't have DRL. This got rid of all the error codes but obviously they don't work as DRL. ( no biggie)
-

A lot of people I've spoken to haven't had any problems come MOT time, as long as they are correctly aligned, i don't think you will have much trouble.

Yeah i tried that also mate, but made no difference. It was only after i installed the LED tails and switched to code 15 everything worked without the dash light. Ideally, i need to buy a new BCM, or get the software updated on my current one. The only thing putting me off switching BCM modules is having to re-code the keys. Not sure how difficult this could be?

I also bought a new BCM and wasn't sure how to program the keys. Over at myturbo diesel they program a MK5 and think it's just the same for a MK6. Here's a You Tube Video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdakPlMnDr4

Did you fit the BCM yourself then mate? For what reason did you have to change yours? I would have thought with yours being a 2012 it would have had the later software installed already? Thanks for the video bud, will have a watch.

No the Vag Tech that fitted the lights fitted the new one. The one in the GTD was a midline BCM part number ending in 086 where a highline ends in 087. The highline has the 2 extra pins which you run from your Kufatec harness to trigger the main beam shutters. When he first installed the lights with the midline BCM the software supported the bi xenon lights. The only thing was no high beams. Thats when i had to buy a new highline from VW at £263...ouch!! Since found out that you can trigger the main beams with a midline BCM..even more ouch!
When i had the error bulb after scratching my head i decided the new BCM was at fault so i purchased a new one from ebay at ...£60 even more ouch! Then with help from Mike with coding and replacing the Kufatec harness life is bliss, well no error bulb!

OUCH indeed mate, that is expensive! Was going to say, my BCM Module ends in 086 but everything is working. There is a couple of things i would like to work better, which is the DRL strip dimming with the indicators, the inner led tails stay on when you pop the boot, which i know should go out, and the LED DRL strips to be on when the lights are all switched off. Im guessing these little things may work if i switch to a newer BCM? Just don't want to kill the car by messing up with fitting and coding in a new BCM module.

I believe that with these headlights the LEDs are actually connected to the sidelight circuit and there is no connection for the DRLs, hence the error message. There is a lot of information of an Australian site (although the lights are sold by a guy in Canada, but also available from China) on these headlights:
http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?p=1369118#post1369118
Also if you connect pins 4 and 10 on the headlight connector, then the LEDs act as DRLs, but do not dim, so possibly not fully legal. Details in this thread:
http://www.golfmk6.com/forums/showthread.php?t=45469
-
My drls dim to 50% when i pop the indicator on. I don't know what an ED35 does when they put the indicators on..anybody inform me. As far as i know mine act as OEM. As far as i know i ended up with the Highline BCM to have the pins 48 and 49 on the C connector for the main beam shutters.
We picked an ED35 12 plate of the auto trader to get the VW parts tech to order a BCM for my car. I think as the 2 letters on the end of the 087 part number change..evolve think that gives the latest software version.
I bought an MG TF today so i'm off to the MG forum to get myself sorted..i just love the old cars

Ahh yes, I have come across this before, was thinking of giving it a go actually. So would this keep the LED strips on when the switch is set to off / or auto (during the day)?

Think I'm going to have to at least try and get a new BCM, I would love mine to run perfectly like the OEM ones. I mean, they are working perfectly fine now, but I'm a bit of a perfectionist (some may say OCD ).
And for booth, a picture as promised of the xenons on with the LED strips, good colour match?

f you connect the two pins together then the lights will be on all the time the ignition is on as the pin for the DRLs is powered when the ignition is on.
-
mavs is this the BCM that you've seen. I got one of these from these guys and it's genuine. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Skoda-VW-BCM-BC-control-module-1K0937087AN-1K0-937-087AN-1K0937087-/221279263654?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item3385459ba6#ht_1300wt_1292

Car is looking pretty awesome at the minute, how difficult was it to fit the front headlights, I've been watching videos that take the bumper off, and that scares me a little!

I was the same but a couple of torx drivers and you'll be fine. One top tip though is when you take the screws down the side of the bumper in the wheel arch is not to turn the wheels to full lock. If you do the steering wheel may lock and you'll have no movement to unlock with the key. This happened to me and you have to rive at the wheel whilst turning the key in the ignition. The next thing is the lugs from the bumper to wing be careful popping them. You'll need a hand to pop them back on, can be done by yourself better with 2 people.

Thanks mate. Really happy with how it looks at the minute. Still haven't got my wheels sorted yet, to be quite honest, car has taken a back seat at the moment as me and the girlfriend are trying to buy our first house together.
As for fitting the lamps, it really does look and sound more of a nightmare than it actually is. I fitted mine on my own, took me approx 2 hours taking my time, being carefully not to damage anything! I did it step by step, keeping all the screws in order so i knew exactly how it all goes back together. Like Alan mentioned, putting the bumper back on at the end would deffo have been much easier with a second pair of hands. If you need any help though, give me a shout and ill try my best to explain in further details

Take it as a sponsership to get rid o that bulb error..grrrr

Haha.. Well if you insist matey, then i will gladly take it off your hands and give it a go  Thanks ever so much, top bloke!! Ill pm you my address buddy.
Ill have to start routing out all the guides now! I think everything should be okay, my only concern is getting the keys linked back to the car. Everything should be do-able through VCDS shouldn't it? Im not going to have to take a trip to the stealerships for them to 'link up to germany' to sort the key out. I only have one key anyway

It's all packed up..and here's a bonus link to bloody Bruno Prado where all my troubles started.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=g_awZ5g7_k8

They look great, very good colour match

Thanks Booth

So within the last couple of weeks, I've treated the old girl to a set of OEM R8 Ignition coils and some NGK Iridium X BKR7EIX spark plugs. Car starts much better now, and also seems to go a little better when given the boot. Still really needs a remap, but that will have to wait.
I also *accidentally* bought a Neuspeed P-Flo Intake as the price was a little too good to resist  I just love listening to that chatter.
Most importantly though, i finally decided on a set of rims and tyres! Ended up going for the Glen Watkins in OEM Silver, with the Continental Contact Sport 5s. Have to say, the drive has been totally transformed, and the grip is awesome!

I just ordered some Continental Contact Sport 5's, they are doing a promo at the moment where if you buy 2 wheels you get a free nights stay in a hotel too https://www.continentalroadtrip.com/Registration (https://www.continentalroadtrip.com/Registration)

My Conti SP 5s have been faultless, rain or shine

mavs - sounds and looks like it's coming along very nicely. Car looks cracking and although never my favourite wheel, got to say those Watkins Glens are superb against the silver. The smoked rear LEDs work really well with it too
-
Thanks Booth. I do feel like its finally starting to take shape now.
I ended up getting the Continentals for £90 a corner, so got a really good deal. A free nights stay in a hotel is a pretty good incentive though
-
Great looking car
Where do you buy your neuspeed p-flo intake from looking to upgrade my intake but can decide which one
-
Looking sweet. Great choice of rims!
-
Thanks guys
Got the P-Flo from AwesomeGTI mate.

Looks a bit like a MG TF that i know that a person owns! That's if you squint your eyes!
Not bad if you squint hard enough looks a bit like an MG FT froma distance!

Mavs the reply is embeded in the thread my google chromebook keyboard is worse than dealing with an error bulb on retrofitted led bi xenon headlights!
-
Haha Alan!! Yes, I suppose it kinda does 😂😂
Just come back in from washing it! Forgot how much of a pain in the ass multi spoke wheels are to clean
Car really need a good detailing. May have to book some time off work when this weather starts picking up!

So last weekend was very productive. Fitted my new alloys (TD Pro Race 1.2 in anthracite gloss) and took a trip over to AwesomeGTI to give the old girl some much needed APR boost !
Had a rolling road before and after (graph below). Started with: 232 bhp 226 ft/lbs, and finished with 261 bhp 296 ft/lbs

Some nice gains, and the car just feels great to drive now. Mid range is amazing
So, pics of the car with the new alloys will be up soon. Haven't had the chance to clean her yet, and it would be rude to post dirty pics

New alloys? What have you done with the Watkins?
Nice gains with the remap, imagine it feels great now!
-
Yeah feels awesome mate. Nice and smooth, pulls very well right through.
The Watkins where faulty, just wouldn't balance up correctly. Anywhere between 40-90 mph the whole floor of the car was shaking. Was awful, so return the alloys and kept the tyres. Shame really as I really liked them wheels on the car, but the pro race 1.2 are about 1/3 of the weight and can certainly feel the difference in the drive.
-
Nice wheels  Prefer the Team Dynamics to the Watkins. Should look good against the silver, look forward to the pics.
Bet the car's feeling a bit spicier now with the combination of lightweight wheels and cheeky remap
