Hi all,
do your washer jets on front lights come (squirt) on every time you wash your windscreen? is there a way to get this off? it makes a hell of a mess of the bonnet/ front every time!
-
No, not every time. They squirt every 5th press of the windscreen washer stalk. Agree they make a terrible mess with soapy water running all down bonnet and sides of car, usually 2 minutes after it's just been washed  I hate the bloody things.
Disable them with VCDS or maybe pull the fuse. Also as mentioned in another recent thread they rapidly drain the washer reservoir.
Your clean car OCD is getting out of control
-
Will work first press everytime once the ignition is on,and lights on, then every 5 times until ignition off again, VW cant change, only disable or so I was told, enquired last visit to dealers as its most frustrating, especially as I have dsg and use paddles a lot,i always seem to catch the wiper stalk when changing up

That's why many of us have VCDS. So that we can do the things that the dealers can, but won't.
-
I believe my washers are the first and were set to every 4 after than I modified it to every 6th time. But the heated seats are sooooo good.

Once a day  Lucky if I press the washer stalk once a week
As the headlamp washers only activate when the headlights are switched on, I try to clean my windscreen when the lights are off, to avoid the dreaded mess. Still get caught out every now and then though
-
It's even worse with a white car and blue screen wash, at speed end up with blue stripes up the bonnet!!!

Just what I was going to say. It would not be the first time ive switched my lights off to clean the screen :lipsrsealed:
-
It will only do it with the headlights on I believe. Just switch to the sidelights for a couple of seconds.
-

^+1. I've done this too, and yes, headlamp washers aren't activated if you switch to sidelights.

I might have done this...
once or twice...
on a deserted road :lipsrsealed:

A weird thing with mine is if you push the stalk away from you, puts the back wiper on, and then pull the stalk to wash the screen, the light washers don't activate.
-
The problem i have with the washers is that they seem to turn the lights off when you use them!! On a dark unlit road, which is 75% of my commute home, i pull the washer and the doo dahs pop up and block out the lights rendering the view ahead somewhat dark! Bloody dangerous. Also, there is a design fault with the auto light switch. In auto mode and you want to switch to normal on mode to put on a front foglight or, more importantly a rear fog light, you have to move the switch past the sidelight position effectively turning the headlights OFF!!! As you do so. Pretty stupid design and dangerous on an unlit road.
-
Dan, turning from Auto to dipped does not turn the lights off momentarily. There is a slight delay when you turn the switch off before the lights actually turn off. The reason you need to switch to the dipped position to use the fog lights is so that the fog lights turn off when you turn the switch back to Auto, therefore preventing them being left on accidentally when it's not foggy anymore.
With regards to washers blocking the light, the first Phaeton's washers worked one at a time when activated. This was well over 10 years ago, so I'm surprised that it hasn't filtered down to lesser models by now.

It does, as the switch has to go past the sidelight position.
-
well I have been waiting till i get to a set of lights and turning them on sidelights and putting spray on to save making a mess of everywhere  bit of a fiddle but i dont have vagcom to do any the stuff. guna have to invest in it for future! cheers for responses people! thought was just mine been a twa*t
-
My dipped lights don't turn of on the Golf or Passat when going from Auto to dipped. Both have halogen lights so perhaps xenons are different.
-
I have Xenons and mine are the same.
Unless I stop at the sidelight position for a couple of seconds or more I can go from auto to dipped beam position without the lights going off.
-
So i have to switch fast then? Maybe they should amend the owners manual, switch quickly between auto and lights on if you want to use the fog lamps, else the lights go out for a bit....a seprate fog light switch may have been a better idea.
-
Not especially fast, no.
I can't say I've found a use for fog lights yet tho'. Fronts put very little light on the road, and the rear, if there is no one behind you, there is little need to have it on and if there is someone following, the chances are they can see you anyway and won't appreciate being dazzled.

I was told by garage that the car had winter pack however I have never seen the headlamp washers work...
Could they be switched off via VCDS?
Or have I been sold a pack of lies by mr dealer?
-
Yes, turn off the lights to clean the windscreen only.
I turned mine down to 1 headlight wash in 25 through VCDS. Easily done.

Depends, bit more info required as there are a few variables. What plate is your car? Do you have cloth seats? If so, are they are heated? If yes, then you have winter pack. Not relevant to leather seats as they came heated as standard, without winter pack. Cars with xenons also have the headlight washers.
All cars have the cutouts for headlight washers but only cars with winter pack or xenons will have the full working mechanism.
You could always get someone to stand at the front of the car whilst you flick the wiper stalk several times (with headlights switched on) to see if they activate. It's possible they could have been turned off via vcds.

Standard non heated cloth interior. 2010 plate.
I've tried it before, the washers are supposed to work once every 5 times you pull the stalk yeh?

Yes, work first time when you switch ignition on and every 5th time thereafter. No heated front seats, no xenons = no winter pack. Trust me when I say it's no great loss not having headlight washers.

Ah well, dealership are either a bunch of con artists then or they didn't have a clue either!
Not bothered that I don't have it like as my last car made a right mess of its bonnet with headlamp washers.
Cheers.

In fairness to the dealers, most have no product knowledge, so would not know that all GITs have washer caps in the bumper, therefore assume that they are real and probably part of a winter pack.
I know a lad that went to see a Scirroco that was advertised as having xenons. When he got there it had standard headlights with a BID kit.

Haha, chris and ajmoir.
It happened to me as I was leaving work tonight, accidentally knocked the wiper stalk and Sod's law the sodding things squirted crap all over the bonnet. Car is filthy anyway but even so
-
I do find at speed that the washers do a better job of not going all over the bonnet.

Does it not reset though every time the ignition is switched off so it will wash the headlights the first time you pull the stock then not until 25 pulls later or until you switch the ignition off?
Or am I just imagining that on the stock setting? I'm sure mine goes first time every time I pull it
-
