I've read that it's a nightmare to do a proper ECU remap on the Mk7 as VW have done something to stop tuning companies messing around with it. Hence why everyone's making tuning boxes instead of the traditional software program going directly on the ECU.
So all tuning companies have been really silent lately. Revo don't even seem to acknowledge the existence of the Mk7. APR said they would release information last month (but never did). So have the tuning companies given up? Will we ever get proper remaps?

I think so. I reckon the days of ECU mapping are gone. I had a nightmare trying to get my Mk6 GTD tuned... VW have made it increasingly difficult to mess about with the ECU. And then there are warranty concerns.
It's a pity VW don't offer an approved dealer mapping that keeps your warranty intact. I believe Ford do this with the ST.

ford offered me a wolf tuning pack away back in 2006 when buying an st-3 a think they use mountune now for any tuning

I'm wondering whether VW are on the case with approved mapping following the announcements this week accompanying the EVO R.
VW are very very aware of the massive tuning aftermarket and how global some of the big tuners have become. VW are always very highly visible at the Worthersee show with their own 'aftermarket' looking specials so maybe now is the time.
Maybe part of the reason (other than 'duty of care' with emissions etc aside from bogus warranty claims) they have locked out ECU's more thoroughly in recent years is that they plan on using their own tuning packages to supplement the sporty niche models.
With the M135i and the A45 AMG cars the hot hatch market is hitting new highs as factory releases with manufacturers being more aware than anyone else that owners of big powered saloon cars are increasingly looking at super-hatches to get their kicks as they downsize whilst keeping the kudos of the badges on the bonnets.
VW will be as aware as anyone else of where there's money to be made in customising cars.

It happens in cycles
Don't forget the GTI hasn't been around that long. Plus with lead times they aren't exactly easy to get hold of for R&D purposes.........
It is getting increasingly difficult to map cars but what tends to happen is that the security protocols get 'released' into the aftermarket when a new generation of ECU is released so hopefully in the future there will be no need to open up the ECU.
In the meantime you just need to sit tight

I think they are concentrating on S3/R as would appear to be an easier nut to crack

APR has already released an ECU upgrade for the gen3 EA888. Not for the GTI yet, but according to them they will release it when GTI is in the showrooms of the USA. The new SIMOS 12 ECU (made by Siemens) is already cracked by APR (and it is 1024bit encrypted!) so they download the upgrade through the OBD-II port. So, in a few months your GTI could have an ECU upgrade!
-
In the meantime AMD have now release a stage 1 remap and the stage 2 coupled with a Milltek exhaust makes 310BHP!

It's early days, they've just beefed up the security and encryption.
Do all these tuners have the permission of the proprietor to alter the original code?
-
I was told my Revo last year at Edition 38 they have remapped a MK7 but at the time required ECU removing and opening up to directly connect to the PCB to initially turn off the anti-tune. From that point on OBD tuning was possible.

Is the GTI running a k03 turbo?

Is the GTI running a k03 turbo?
No, the GTI has an IHI turbo like the MK6.

But which is better (for tuning?)
-
It depends on which model of IHI turbo it is... I suspect it will be either an RHF55 (good for about 270ps) or an RHF6 (good for about 320ps)
I guess it would be an IHI on the GTD as well? But a different model...
-
We know APR have cracked the ECU as they run a mk7 race car and probably several developmental road cars. It's just whether the ECU needs to be opened up to re-map. Kinda like the first re-chips I had back on my Leon Cupra many lifetimes ago.
K03 or IHI? Well with REVO on a mk5 it would run about 240bhp and the mk6 around 260 on the rolling road days I attended a few years ago. Different engines though and the mk7 is similar to mk6 but with significant differences so 280 should be easily possible.
-
The numbers I gave above for the IHI Turbo models were IHIs rating for the Turbo...
If the GTI has an RHF55 IHI recommend that unit for applications up to 270ps, the IHI RHF6 for applications up to 322ps and was in response to the question... which is better IHI or KKK and it depends on the turbo fitted and the application...

They both had similar compressor maps, so not a lot of difference. It will depend on which particular turbo is selected on the MK7.

Pay attention at the back of the class!
Lots on here about DTUK and Shark which is an add on box totally bypassing the ECU.
Produces good figures too, but this thread is about whether the 'big guns' can crack the ECU itself.

Excellent. I look forward to seeing that. I have a feeling it's going to be an absolute beast. Hope that means they'll release real remaps then.

The dealer that sold me the car at my local VW dealership said that a remap is possible and could be made under warranty within a workshop cooperated by Volkswagen. It's 3x the price of a normal re-map but I feel safe putting up more money for a dealership/warranty-covered performance enhancement. I didn't go into further detail with the dealer as he advised me not to touch the car's mechanics before 6k on its clock. I am not sure if that workshop already has re-mapped other Mk7 GTIs as the dealer had said that only about 45-50 units have been sold from when they were first released in my country 2 months ago. I even asked around performance/tuning shops and no luck as to if it is possible to re-map the Mk7. Some didn't even know about the car!

Superchips say they do not have a method of modifying the gtd because of a new type engine management security. They say they are currently evaluating a plug in tuning box that is currently running on a 2.0ltr tdi 150.

I've heard on Friday that Revo are close to a re-map(about 4 weeks) it's being developed on Rega Motorsports GTi

Any news on the Revo remap?

Any news on the Revo remap?
They have posted a cheeky pic on Facebook, if I was a betting man I reckon it will be released for GTI international

OOO...that could be good as we are going to GTI International....
