...atleast not without changing the rolling radius of the tyres, requiring recalibration of the speedo and changing the handling of the car.
This is something I've just been told by my dealer who has been given the information direct from his lead technician in the service department.
As far as I can tell from this forum and the internet in general, this is complete rubbish, am I right?

Someone doesn't know what they are talking about at VW.
My GTi PP is running on 17" winter wheels. Summer tyres are on 18" Austins. In fact 17" are standard in Switzerland and 18" are an extra...
-
As far as I can tell you can fit 17" wheels to the GTI and with the appropriate tyres maintain (with a percent or two) the rolling radius. The key thing is, whether, the wheel itself (with an appropriate offset) will fit over the brakes...
Changing to 17" tyres may affect the handling but it is unlikely to make it dangerous - it may have slightly less grip but on the road I doubt you'll notice - and may even improve the ride
-
Complete rubbish. 17's are standard here in Ireland and many other countries. The 18's are a factory option. You just need to keep the rolling circumference the same by fitting slightly higher profile tyres.

I don't have the car yet or otherwise I would have posted a picture of it with the 16" steel wheels for winter, as approved by VW.
Also, 17s here as standard as others have said.
-
Yep, that's what I thought.
I'm so disappointed with VW. The car is great, the entire sales process and any contact with VW at all is a shambles.

Point out to the salesman that the techie is trying to be a little bit too careful. I understand that any advice he gives they have to be able to legally back up so they'd not want to tell you that something fits when it won't but c'mon, the GTI is sold on 17" wheels on the continent.
The mk5 and mk6 had 17" wheels as standard too and are the same fitment. The UK just gets the option to make the GTI competitive price wise in the market and attractive enough to compete as it's a big hot hatch buying market.
If you don't have the big brakes of the PP even 16s will fit

It's another prime example of dealers with bugger all product knowledge.
Most cars salesmen may as well be selling cheese. They are finance salesman who will include a car for you as a byproduct of the deal. When I bought my Passat, the salesman seemed to be out of his comfort zone when I told him that I would pay in full with my debit card when I picked the car up.

Yeah, that's what we did and the dealer really didn't like it, not least because we wouldn't confirm how we were going to pay until the end.

what tyre size did you go for?
-
this is my current setup on my GTD for winter instead of the standard 18"
Rim : DEZENT TD black 7.00 x 17 (LK 5/112, OS 48)
Tyre : Nokian WR-A3 205/50 R17 93V
Rolling radius is almost identical so no impact on speedo etc and performance in the cold and wet is so much better than the Conti summer tyres
-
I've given up with VW.. Going to take advantage of the Costco offer on Monday to get the tyres swapped on the current wheels (and take the risk of a scratch), then ebay the Bridgestones and replace them with something decent when summer tyre time comes round again.
It means having 18" winter wheels rather than the 17" I was going to have but it gets rid of the Potenzas (I'm getting fed up of seeing the traction control light) and it stops me having to mess around with VW anymore.

It's shod with Continental WinterContacts. Size is 225 x 45 R 17, but I don't think there is any choice in the size without compromising the speedo, handling etc...

aren't 225 the correct width tyres for 17's??

225 are the standard width but for winter tyres narrower is better hence the choice of 205 with profile 50 to keep the circumference the same
-
were they any more expensive than 225 width?

were they any more expensive than 225 width?
No, in fact a bit cheaper than 225 width, purchased with alloys fully fitted from mytyres (about 1/2 price of the VW 17" set)

cheers Andy

That'll be 45 profile for a 17" tyre, 50 for a 16" tyre.
-
205-50-17 have more or less the same rolling radius as 225-45-17 tyres.
-

Depends on width. the profile height is a ratio so depends on width:
225/40/18 equals 205/50/17 very nearly equals 225/45/17 and 205/55/16

After a few weeks of back and forth with VW and getting nowhere I ordered wheels and tyres from wheelbasealloys on Monday after getting confirmation from them that they would fit the PP GTI, they arrived today as requested and I've just had them fitted to the car.
Wheels still turn and I haven't ripped the brake calipers off so I guess it all works fine, irrespective of what VW say! I will grant them that there is very little clearance between the brakes and the inside of the wheel though. I'd post a picture if I wasn't ashamed of the state of the car.
For anyone else who is looking for information, it is a performance pack GTI and the wheels/tyres were 205/50/17 ET45.
Strong recommendation for www.wheelbasealloys.com from me.
