This is something I've just been told by my dealer who has been given the information direct from his lead technician in the service department.
As far as I can tell from this forum and the internet in general, this is complete rubbish, am I right?
Point out to the salesman that the techie is trying to be a little bit too careful. I understand that any advice he gives they have to be able to legally back up so they'd not want to tell you that something fits when it won't but c'mon, the GTI is sold on 17" wheels on the continent.
The mk5 and mk6 had 17" wheels as standard too and are the same fitment. The UK just gets the option to make the GTI competitive price wise in the market and attractive enough to compete as it's a big hot hatch buying market.
If you don't have the big brakes of the PP even 16s will fit
