Title: Do GTis use up oil?
Post by: jaygolfgti on 24 September 2013, 00:48
Hi all, I've had my GTI now for about a year. My oil light came on about 6 months ago so I had it filled right up. 6 months later and the lights back on. Before this I owned a 1.2 corsa and a 1.8 MG ZR. Is it normal for a GTI 2 litre petrol to need filling up more than a less or none performance motor? Do I need to worry or just get it topped up again?

Thanks

Depends what car and engine it is. Some are known to use oil others aren't.

Whats the miilage?
What oil are you using?

Use 10w40 if its high millage.

Then is it a oil leak? Do you have oil drips under the car? Is the car oily when you get on your knees and look underneath?

Also keep a eye on it dont wait for the light to come on as you may cause damage with low oil level.  Check every 2 weeks.

Try putting more info in your posts so we can help, instead of us/me asking questions

Some say those 2.0 8V motors in the Golf4 are pretty hungry on oil.

Is it a 2.0 8V in a Golf4 GLi?

As tweed says, weekly check no waiting for the light to come on.

The light means low oil pressure not low oil level.

I had b6 audi avant 2.0 20v petrol engine that drank oil  was better with 10w 40 oil. Meant to be 5w 30 I believe.

I research quite a bit on audi engine using oil and its very common.

I was reading about new v8 engines using 1litre of oil every 1000 miles.  (New engines!)

Unfortunately these engines do drink oil so you will have to keep topping up.

OK, thanks for replies. So it's normal? I've had it put back in so hopefully all good. I have the 2 litre mk5 fsi turbo.

what millage?

And check level every week or two

Is it normal? Also, which oil should I buy so I can top it up myself?

Thanks

Yes normal.

5w 30.

Buy good oil, not cheap crap

ALL the vw's i've had have been heavy on oil to start with.  but after a good stretch of hard work they stop

get the same when rebult them before as well,  the more stick you give them the sooner they stop useing oil

Im sorry but this maybe the case for you but not most.
My gti that I bought with 25,000 sold it with 36,000 never not once dropped in oil level.
My vr6 with 82,000 miles used a bit of oil.
My b6 audi avant with 136,000 miles used a litre about every 200 miles. I then changed it to 10w40 that made it a bit better.

I cant see how engines use oil at start of life then gradually stop.

Maybe you can explain the mechanics of it

The GTI does like a drop of oil. If you are doing short journeys it will drink it

Just buy the oil from your local dealer; its as cheap as anything else and you know you are putting the correct stuff in the engine

I'm with tweed on this one,

My MK3 GTI is on 145,000 and believe it or not, it does not use oil and its on the road always (Local & motorway).

The VR6 i had was on 85,000 and never used oil.

The garage that filled my car with oil said that the newer car engines are more prone to be the ones that use lots of oil. So if you have GTi prior to MK5 then you might be less likley to have oil thristy engine.

engines will tend to use oil when they are fresh, oil consumption will fall right off for most of the enignes servicable life then when it's knackerd it'll burn oil again.

it's not uncommon to get engines that haven't setteled during there initial running in period

this is basicly where the roughness on the bores has been polished off by the rings without wearing them enough usual culprit is engines not been worked enough to get enough cylinder pressure for long enogh to force the rings into the cylinder  and make them wear,   once the initial roughness is gone this wear still happens but at a much reduced rate higher cyl pressure encorage it to happen faster.

the mk5 thats sat outside used to use a littel oil when it new, think it used a couple of liters in it's first 10 - 15k  it's never needed a top up since it's done 140k now
my old 1.8T passat had done 220 k when it died  it didn't use oil
my mk2 golf has done 180k  it dosent use oil ( used to when i got it )

the vans show it best of all tho.  all of them that have been used for short trips and bimbeling around need oil toping up between services,  the vans that do the rough heavy work and hard towing  don't need topping up between services.

genorators also show the same trend.  i've got a genset here admitedly it's about f**ked  it's done 10,000 clock hours, in the last 500 hours it's started to use oil ( as it's dyeing )  it used to use a bit of oil but after about 200 hours of hard work it stoped useing oil and never need oil topping up between changes for over 7000 clock hours.

new ones never done any hard work ( standby genny )   it burns about 1ltr a day atm   so it's ether knackerd @ sub 500 hours or going to stop useing oil at some point.

sounds like your audi was fit for scrap burning 1ltr ever 200 miles.   i don't tolerate oil burning much  it gets a chance to stop or it gets rebuilt

Im sorry but I just cant see the logic behind that. I understand perfectly what your saying, I just dont believe that once the rings have bedded in the bores that oil consumption stops.

Ive taken loads of heads off cars and you will always get scores down the bore and black carbon lines down the piston. This obviously is where the oil will escape.

Plus with all the research I done when I had my b6 audi was that the gap in the valve stem seals was fractional bigger than previous but still with in tolerance.
Hench the more miles you do the more they wear out.

Maybe jaygolfgti you should go to a garage and get it tested to see where the oil is escaping from.

With every single car ive had the more miles its done the more oil it uses.

I also get new van for work every 2/3 years. When new they never use oil but at about 60,000 I notice I carry a litre bottle of oil in the van to top up. Same goes with our sprinter and old t5 that done 250,000.

i've allways found that when wear related oil consumption comes it develops quite fast.

i've had heavy oil consumption from turbos before, and heavy leacking from seals on high mileage motors but it's all service parts really.

some of the 2.4 transits use oil like it's going out of fasion but they arn't burning it they leack it, in the new year they'll get hauled into the workshop steamcleaned and offending oil seals and gaskets changed and they likely stop useing oil.

stem seals i find often fail more to do with AGE rather than clock hours or miles,  guides get changed when heads are off.

but it is well know amonst those of us who run a lot of engines for lots of hours in what is a rather more controled enviroment than a car, that engines that have done meany hours at low load will burn oil give them  hard work and oil consumption will often drop over time.

yes there dose come a point where oil consumption goes up again because it's knackerd and the only way you'll fix that is a rebuild.

you will not allways get scores down the bore  often yes  but a well mantaned motor can have clean bores,  tend to find they scratch the bores and pistons up after a big overheat or been run withoout filters or with collapsed filters

Well guess thats the thing with buying used cars. You never know how theyve been used. I guess ive been unlucky with used cars. Well apart from the two bmws ive owned.  I just put the down to the engineering of bmw.

Also note that volkswagen/audi say that their engines will use 1 litre of oil to 2000 miles.
And as I said from the research I done, the oil consumption only gets worse. This is just information ive read from people making threads on various sites about burning oil.

Obviously the cars that get better with oil consumption are not writing threads about it, but they also aren't replying saying it will get better.

I know I wont be buying a new vw regardless of what youve just told me.

Well my experience with a fleet of vans, the 236k mile 56 plate doesn't ever get topped up. The two 80k 2011 vans do.

Pretty much exactly the same engines and always well overloaded and cained to sh!t.

Lots of conflicting oppinions. So do you think its normal? I'll keep an eye on how much it uses over the next months.

so what your saying is your 80k vans are not run in yet and piston rings still need to wear done the hone on the bores??

christ since we have already mentioned other engines like generators ill use my kart engine as a example.  After 10 hours of use the hone marks are pretty much gone on the stroke. Obviously still have a bit in some places but its smooth. And well run in because 10 hours is a life of a engine. Its rebuild time.

Also danny p was talking about first 10/15k miles and never used oil since.
If your engines are burning oil ar 80k then they will continue burning oil.
Unless you tell me they are still running in and rings still aint run in the bores yet.

Here one thread of the many ive read about oil consumption getting worse.

im sorry but with my own experience and with many people having the same issues, what are you going to believe?  The mass or one guy saying different.

Im not in anyway saying you are wrong danny, but the op will think his engine will get better but 99% chance it will only get worse.

I can keep posting threads of others if you wish?

TFSI engines tend to kill themselves  due to coil pack failure,   if theres no spark petrol washes the oil film off the bore and before you know it the motors smokeing and thats the end of that

people never really post about things going well or getting better they just happily drive them about.

the 2.0 crossflow 8 valve motor can be heavy on oil,  they seem to be the enigne that get lumberds with short runs and pooteling about as anyone who was going to drive it hard bought the 1.8T.

sometimes they will inprove by been driven and good serviceing,   other motors will just use more and more oil as time goes on. there is a know piston ring issue with them.

the mk3 enigne will often respond well to some carefully aministerd abuse.

mk2 motors PB and KR were well know for not setteling there rings for many miles unless they were given some hammer.

tweed - after 10 / 15 k oil consumption should have stoped  but dosent allways.   if the enigne was never given enough load when it was fresh it takes a very long time for them to stop burning oil,

i rebuilt a tractor enigne some years ago once it was all finished minion was soposed to connect it up to water pump to give it a few hours of sensible work  before giveing it to the vandals,  anyway minion got distracted by something and left it ideling by the pump all day. that never did it any favors   hell that engine can get through some oil.  it's slowly getting better but i'll die before it's right as someone will run it out of oil  and there be a rod through the side no dought

I dunno the blokes reckon the old one used to use oil and doesn't anymore. Time will tell I guess. They do about 250-350 a day though so won't be long.

The Sprinter down there uses loads of oil and that's had a new engine in about 2 years ago, never used to on the old one either just a piston blew a hole in it or something I'm not sure.

the best thing you could ever do to an engine is make sure the oil is to the max an then take it out and redline it through the box a couple of times. if its weak it will explode. if its strong it will improve.

It's only done 40k miles so the engine should hopefully be fine. I'm wondering if the garage i've gone to to have it filled up put the best oil in (i know they said they put in synthetic oil but not sure of anything else..? If they didn't put in the best oil then maybe this would make it go sooner? .. anyways.. I had my service less than 6 months ago and nothing showed up on the diagnostics test.
Im about to buy some oil for when it happens again. Halfords are showing three brands for my car that they sell, which is the best?

Halfords 5W30 Fully Synthetic VW/Audi Oil
 Castrol Edge 5W30 Oil
 Mobil 1 ESP 5W/30 Oil

I've probably thrashed just about every single car I've bought and not had a single one blow up after a bit of redline?

With every single car ive had the more miles its done the more oil it uses.

Well the 1.8t Skoda I had with 120k on it never used a drop in the time I had it, the Astra is on 86k and in the 1400miles I have done in it no oil has been needed.

All the cars I have had in most cases were 70k plus and have never used oil to a big degree and daft as it seems I check my oil and all levels every weekend.

The older stuff I had did need the odd top up but newer stuff tends to be a lot better.

Mobil1 it is! I'll get it ordered. I don't mind it going every few months as long as there is nothing wrong with the engine etc. It's a slight pain to fill it up but nothing major.
