Do GTis use up oil?
« on: 24 September 2013, 00:48 »
Hi all, I've had my GTI now for about a year. My oil light came on about 6 months ago so I had it filled right up. 6 months later and the lights back on. Before this I owned a 1.2 corsa and a 1.8 MG ZR. Is it normal for a GTI 2 litre petrol to need filling up more than a less or none performance motor? Do I need to worry or just get it topped up again?

Thanks

Depends what car and engine it is. Some are known to use oil others aren't.

Whats the miilage?
What oil are you using?

Use 10w40 if its high millage.

Then is it a oil leak? Do you have oil drips under the car? Is the car oily when you get on your knees and look underneath?

Also keep a eye on it dont wait for the light to come on as you may cause damage with low oil level.  Check every 2 weeks.

Some say those 2.0 8V motors in the Golf4 are pretty hungry on oil.

Is it a 2.0 8V in a Golf4 GLi?
Just because you're offended doesn't make you right.

As tweed says, weekly check no waiting for the light to come on.

The light means low oil pressure not low oil level.

Where all my moneys went.

I had b6 audi avant 2.0 20v petrol engine that drank oil  was better with 10w 40 oil. Meant to be 5w 30 I believe.

I research quite a bit on audi engine using oil and its very common.

I was reading about new v8 engines using 1litre of oil every 1000 miles.  (New engines!)

Unfortunately these engines do drink oil so you will have to keep topping up.

OK, thanks for replies. So it's normal? I've had it put back in so hopefully all good. I have the 2 litre mk5 fsi turbo.

Is it normal? Also, which oil should I buy so I can top it up myself?

Thanks
