Nice, but... why no GTI?!

PS, get a badged grill ;)

it already has a rear disc conversion, weber carb with manual choke, lowered on coilovers. very solid underneath and no sign of any rust.

so much planned for it, full restore of interior, tidy up of exterior and fresh paint, new wheels and arches(arches are cracked) bigger engine in the future. so much planned

lots of pics to be uploaded, as will need advice and help.

thanks

By the sounds of it you will be plowing money into it anyway! GTI was my first car at 19, but this is still an awesome first car. Infinitely better than a corsa or some sh!t haha, enjoy it mate.

Welcome to the MK2 club...

My son's 1st car was a MK2 (Wonder why!!) Enjoy it and mess with it as much as you want... Then you'll learn that OEM is the way. But we all have to start somewhere and what a good car to start with...

You will find all the help you need on here and no doubt some sarcasm, but take it with a pinch of salt... It's a forum after all...

Enjoy & Learn!!

Wise words from X4MGS, I've only been here a month or two and the guys have been stupidly helpful.

And insurance wasn't so bad, I made sure I had the parents as named drivers to lower the risk and it came out at about £900  fully comp 6000 or 8000 (can't remember) miles a year.

No Problem...

I just wish I could have started with with a MK2 Golf....

I had a 2CV in multi coloured 70's green , took me 10 years to get a Driver (For the ex wife @£3.5K Bargain...) and have owned at least 20 MK2 GTI's since...

As said enjoy and welcome to the club...

Cost my son £900 for a 1.6 driver with him using my 9 years no claims and him as 2nd driver - that was only 3 years ago, but he now has his own GTI and the insurance has drop massively...

You just need time and a GTI will come & look at these years as a learning curve for a MK2...

Yeah I was pretty pleased, I couldn't believe it when I realised I could afford a mk2 GTI haha.

Have you used a manual choke before? (http://www.ehow.co.uk/how_7993007_use-manual-choke-car.html)

haha I bet you was!! yeahh I was sort of doing a similar thing anyway! it just revs very low on idle and cuts out, is that just manual choke or do I need to set it right for idle??

nevermind! as I just remember that when I had got it warmer after working out the choke it sat fine on idle

have a problem, my bonnet shuts properly but you have to proper slam it.. but when you shut it properly you cant open it using the bonnet release in the drivers side footwell.. i took the grille off to find that it was being help on my cable ties so i need a new grille. i took off the grille to see that everything is fine, but the actual cable going to the spring from the bonnet release pops out when its closed properly, so you have to put it back into place to actually open it again.? correct me if im wrong but do i just need to adjust the cable from the bonnet release in the footwell so it stays tighter and stays in place? then it will open and close fine? wrong or right..

haha i might start saying a similar thing!!
oh well my engine temp has got up to half way before and my fan hasnt still kicked in.. so i am unsure if my fan works haha, i'll have to check tomorrow
Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: Sgt_Lemon on 28 June 2013, 22:33
Older cars actually use the whole temp gauge, it should run hot. Mine kicks in at around 3/4 of the way.
Title: Re: project mk2 410

Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: Sgt_Lemon on 28 June 2013, 22:40
With everything off flip your magic switch a listen out for anything. Think my switch was installed as it doesn't have the intermediate fan kick in. Only the final trigger. Leave it running on the drive for a while and see if it kicks in once at temperature. With no ram air then it will get warmer and the fan should kick in.

i have another question.. on the drivers side there is some sort of fuel line.. when running smoke comes out the filter.. ive seen other mk2's and they dont have this, the hose goes down to the back of the engine block and its not got a jubilee clip to hold it on
ive smelt the smoke and filter and it just smells like fuel.. so i dont get why it'd smoke out fuel? so it obviously doesnt go there

heres the pics

that will be your crankcase breather sir. its actually meant to plumb in to air filter box but I see you have kn so it will just be vented to atmosphere. same way mine is and it never caused me any bother.

ahhh it makes sence now, so it does need to be there im guessing, well mine smokes and smells like fuel.. is that normal?
Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: gazareth on 28 June 2013, 23:28
yeah that will be oil fumes your smelling. its best to have an oil catch tank on end of pipe or vent it underneath car otherwise you might get oil mist getting up on to your windscreen or fumes coming in through the bulkhead. my breather just hangs down by the sump. keep it away from exhaust though.

I forgot the smaller engine mk2's are carb not injection. Looks empty in there without airbox and inlet. Mk2's look a bit empty regardless though

ive got all the gauges just need to wire them up
Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: gazareth on 29 June 2013, 01:19
you could make a hole in base of kn filter and plumb it in to that. kinda like the original set up. or you could extend it down by the rear engine mount and fasten it somehow. you need to keep it away from exhaust or the oil fumes will be going on it and burning which wont smell to nice. it might be fine where it is now but if you get a whiff of oil fumes then you should try either of the above.

ive read through so many threads on this and it just seems confusing
Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: gazareth on 29 June 2013, 01:42
is it an oil pressure gauge with small pipe going to back? the gauges aren't a problem to wire in. its just the sensors you need to send info to gauges that's the biggest part of job. you got to get the temp and pressure sensors hooked up to the oil gallery somehow but to be honest im not sure if there is any take off other than the 1 for the oil light switch which you should retain. you may need to t piece them in.

One sends the signal to the mfa and the other to the gauges. Without the t piece you can only chose one

ah I thought you meant the water temp and the oil temp came of the same point on the engine lol. I wouldn't bother with the mfa oil temp. just hook the vdo 1 up and since its right there in front of you that's the 1 you will be using most.

you could just get a second hand 1 of a mk2/mk3 gti. or maybe the water temp sensor of the earlier gti would work(before 1987/88) I think. the engines with the alloy coolant flanges. the water temp and oil temp senders look very similar.

the sensors for oil and water look identical don't they? there is 1 there for 5 quid delivered. worth a punt i would say.

still unsure whether to just buy it haha
Title: Re: project mk2 410

that sensor on ebay says 10mm thread but it says it fits most vws which are 1/8 npt. so not to sure what the deal is there. the oil light sensor and pressure gauge are 1/8 npt though so they will fit to the t piece/+piece adapter. mind you the adapter comes with a load of different....ummmm. adapters lol.

yeah that will be fine. after all 50c oil temp and 50c water temp is exactly the same thing. and the thread should be fine since its for a vw.

yeah I thought that too! just looks like a new car, the wheels are far too big also, I am either going to get 15's or 16's, ordered some of the original lights also as I think the smoked tail lights make it look too dark haha
steering wheel is here tomorrow or Wednesday so I will finally be able to move it haha

Finished the tcut
Fixed door cards so they aren't loose
Bought some original mk2 lights to replace smokes ones (smoked lights now for sale on here and eBay)
Now backtoblacking arches and bumpers

Not much progrss as no parts have tuned up yet
May buy a stereo tomorrow
Will upload pics of its interior and exterior state

umm a mess by the looks of it lol. is it something to do with an alarm?
definitely a mess!! it says on the back of the 'block' "can be re microwaved"
it has wires going into it from all sorts of places so.. I think its just a bodge job block someones put in to keep all the wires in.. because at least 70% of the wires from the battery are going into that 'block' so I think the previous owner put it there whilst it was jelly and put the wires in there and then just let it set.. as the amplifier and sub wire is going through it.. and if it was an alarm it wouldn't need to be connected to the sub and amp haha.. i have no idea, i don't want to break the block incase i ruin all the wires inside.. as i don't know whats in it!!

so much planned for it, full restore of interior, tidy up of exterior and fresh paint, new wheels and arches(arches are cracked) bigger engine in the future. so much planned

lots of pics to be uploaded, as will need advice and help.

done!!!!
took it all out and broke it up with a hammer and chisel to be safe instead of just smashing it, all it had inside was some relays(I think) and some wires, sub+amp wire was in there pointlessly and was only wiring for lights thank god. ive now re wired the lights and for now there just taped to my battery until I find a way to get them tucked away somewhere, I also rewired up my door card speakers as the wire had snapped..
took pics of what I was doing

Have you got a live tester. The stereo wires split up basically into two halves. it's the brown, green, purple, white half (solid and striped) which is the speaker wires and correlates to front right and left and rear right and left. The other half of the wires are earth, constant live and ignition live. I'm trying to remember them all without looking, a live tester is kinda needed, you could link a bulb with some wires to make a tester, then just earth one wire and use the other wire to test for live, if the bulb comes on its a live wire.

Title: Re: project mk2 410

Unless your using some big speakers don't wire to the amp as you lose all ability to set fade and bass etc from the head unit. My amp only powers the sub

Looks like the power wires are connected in the upside down pic.  Just need to connect earth. And the switched live and permanent are twisted together so it should turn on and then you can work out speaker wires.
Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: VWchapman17 on 05 July 2013, 10:24
got it all working eventually, the standard wires for the stereo are all tangled and wrong, and the sub and amp and speaker wires are everywhere, I blew 2 fuses getting this thing working, and when I did get it working it never turned off so I need to make my own wire going to the ignition switch. I need an adapter for the sub and the amp as I only have 2 ports on the stereo so not everything can be plugged in, and when it did work it just kept cutting out, then I put it in my mates car and worked fine and sounded great!!! so what im going to do is,

replace fuses in fuse box as most of them are shot
new sub+amp and speakers
new wiring, start from scratch as original wiring is sh!t
wire vdo gauges in when get sub and amp
just rewire most things in and around my dash board to make them a lot tidier and so they actually work..

makes sense to me

also had the steering wheel on yesterday and spent most of the day driving it about, pulls and goes very well for a 1.3
pulled away quicker than a 1.6 ztec fiesta.. geabox is good, no second gear crunch, clutch is good, brakes are rubbish though as one of my discs are warped an the other discs are rusty. new discs and pads on the list to buy also!

nothing new to tell anyone about the golf.. no progress over this weekend.

have a problem though, to sort out my brakes, I need the locking wheel nut.. but I don't have it haha how am I supposed to remove the nut to get my wheels off, I cannot find it anywhere online either

must be a cheats way of getting it off.
Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: Sgt_Lemon on 08 July 2013, 21:50
You could always use a massive grinder to chop away parts of your wheel surrounding the locking nut. Pull the wheel straight off, you just need to buy another wheel with a similar hole so you can bolt that on.

what I usually do with them blighters is weld a big lump of weld to the locking nut. and while it is still red hot tap a socket over it. usually comes lose very easily. or try cracking it free with a hammer and chisel. once they start turning your good to go.

seriously getting fed up of the mk2 now, I knew the carpet was ruined but.. underneath there is just loads of sh!t like wires and crap all over the place.. so that's a new carpet which isn't cheap
I have barely any relays.. and I don't think I have a relay for my headlights (unsure if ones needed) but there is just wiring on top of my battery so that's just another problem wiring it up to the dash relay, they work fine! but they cant just sit on my battery forever
fog lights don't work, think its because it has no relay
the oem lights I bought off ebay haven't turned up yet, they were meant to be here last Thursday..
new grille as mines held on by cable ties
speaker and stereo wiring needs to be re-done as its shoddy and doesn't work as when I turn on my heater you can hear it through my sub..
g60 arches and skirts aren't on properly
new seats as mine are ripped
door cards to match with door card trim such as handles and wing mirror bellows
interior light needs re wiring and a bulb
boot carpet
gas struts for boot
4 new discs and pads for each disc
new wheels as the 17's are far to big and reduces turning circle and they feel heavy
dent and scratch on passenger side door and rear panel (not that bad)
speedo doesn't work, neither does clock
vdo gauges need wiring
side indicator is hanging out, and there is random wires in and around the fuse box

I just don't know where to start or what to do with it!!
seems like such a colossal job for someone who works part time and is still at college

Your list looks almost as long as mine when I got my mk2. Seriously writing a list is the hardest part. Once you get to crossing stuff off you start to feel better about it. Once you find a way to get the locking nut off the discs and pads is easy, cross that off the list. The seats in a mk2 come out in about a minute. Once they are out trying steam cleaning your carpets to see if that helps. At the same time run all your rear speaker and sub wires under the carpets and wire it up- cross that off. Indicators are just plastic with a hook. The indicator and gas struts can be found at a scrappy- cross that off.

all very true, its just getting the parts for cheap enough and doing and repairing it properly, my local scrappy has no old vw's so they are hopeless,my carpet looks as thought it doesn't fit my car lol.. its loose and shows the actual shell of the car..  my biggest worry is my interior and my wiring.. those 2 things are probably the biggest job.. I may take it to a vw specialist my step dad knows that's local and see if he can help or has any spares.

hey man. it may be a big list but its lots of small jobs. don't go giving up on it. you should get it sorted for mot and on road then finish it off at your leisure. like a rolling restoration lol. oh btw the headlights don't have relays. but they do work a bit better with them and it takes a bit of load of the light switch.

Even better - Use Both....

Nightbreaker Bulbs!!

i think they are draining my battery too also..... being connected directly from the battery, literally you could plug the headlight bulbs into either of the 2 and it wont make a difference, baring in mind that the fogs are connected to them also and no power gets to the fogs.

pay day Friday, new wheels, maybe bumpers(small bumper conversion), headlight wiring loom(uprated) vdo guage loom (possibly) rear lights will be here. then some small bits and bobs for interior to tidy it up, depending how much i have left after that, may invest in a new grille or 4 discs and pads.

big things coming soon. slow progress as lack of money.

I would advise not to rush. I get bored when there isn't something to do. Spending so much time working on it a mk2 is half the fun. It's also nice when others notice the rolling project progression.

Half the stuff you need to sort won't cost money!

You have to prioritise what needs sorting and what doesn't.

Front Grille not important for MOT, Nor are the VDO's, Small bumpers Etc... Stick to the important stuff 1st, rest can wait.

This. An MOT is a safety check, it just checks vital systems and lights; Focus on these for September. An MOT is only valid the day it's done, after that you have a full year to do whatever you want.

got my lock and wheel nut off today though! so that's a positive

wheel bearings, 4 discs and pads and wheels to sort out, may just get my self a set of banded steels with tyres instead of buying tyres for the wheels I have already got that are 17's and flaking and scuffed..

hi for the exhaust check if you get someone to block the tailpipe when engine running and you have a look underneath you will soon find it. there will usually be some black soot on the exhaust where it is blowing anyway. as for banded steels they are only as safe as the person that welded them. personally I would steer well clear.

yeah just stick a new 1 on or you could get a straight pipe and do away with the centre box (they don't do much anyway). or if your planning an engine swap any time soon you should think about an upgrade as the standard 1.3 exhaust is kinda small bore.
Title: Re: project mk2 410

It wouldn't pass the mot with the straight through though would it? I could just buy a new middle box silencer for the mot and just stick it on each time my mot comes about, I wasn't planning any engine conversions any time soon, was thinking about getting a new system though, the exhaust I want and have seen online.. isn't for sale anywhere.... haha i'll post a pic

if I remember right the 1.3 and 1.6 exhaust are the same or very similar. and then the 1.8 carb and gti are larger bore and three boxes. yeah you could just stick on a new centre box. they are pretty cheap anyway.

You can pass an mot just fine without a centre box like I have. Depending on where it is blowing though you might not need one. If its on a straight bit of pipe, get a tin can, 2 jubilee clips and some fire gum. If its on the seam for the box just weld it up again.

I've already got a sub and amp wired in with 2 door card speakers. Getting parcel shelf speakers. My head unit is a pioneer(a post about it on here) but the wiring to go into the pioneer ISP lead is all f*cked and short and ruined and the stereo doesn't turn off.. I need a lead that goes from the 2 output cables into the Iso lead and sort my earth wire and sort out the wires that actually switch it on and off as its currently permanently on.. So I thought the easiest best thing to do is re wire it up to the pioneer head unit iso.. Blown too many fuses trying to wire it up..
Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: Sgt_Lemon on 31 July 2013, 16:43
What I would do for now is just unplug the amp from the battery. You wire the amp using phono wires (red and white) which easy easy and can be ignored. You will wire the parcel shelf and door speakers using the white, purple ect. Now that those can all be ignored focus on your remaining wires. There should be 4 and have there own pin on the head unit. Ou will need a constant live, a switch live and an earth, that is all. The blue wire can be ignored but is sometimes used to add a aerial booster.

ive wired it in before.. but it doesn't turn off when you turn off the ignition.. read what people have said about permanent lives and switched lives and all sorts, but I cant find a way for it to turn off
then I realised when I turn my heater on.. you can hear it coming through my speakers......
Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: weazgti on 02 August 2013, 17:14
Try the cross over relay, swap it with known working one.
It cuts power to stereo whilst cranking.
Mine went and my head unit turned itself on and I lost heater and cig lighter ( if the fuse s lasted long enough)
Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: gazareth on 02 August 2013, 18:10
you should have a permanent live to keep your radio station settings and a live switched on and off from ignition barrel to turn unit on and off. usually yellow and red but cant remember which goes where. mine is just wired so I have to switch it on and off at head unit. soon get used to it.
Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: VWchapman17 on 02 August 2013, 19:20
ive got a yellow and red wire going together connecting to 1 wire.. so the perm live and the switched live go into what? where is the best place to earth from the stereo wiring also?
whats the black wire also??
Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: gazareth on 02 August 2013, 21:21
well basically the black wire from the stereo goes to earth. the red one is a permanent live and the yellow should connect to ignition switch and power up when key turned. can you get up a clear pic off all the loose wires behind your stereo (on the car loom)?

jeez that's quite a bit of spaghetti you got there lol. I would say the 3 on the top left are (brown/earth. red/permanent live. blue and white/ignition switch live) the 8 wires your holding are for your 4 speakers but they don't look like they are going to any speakers? I would test the 3 wires on the top left just to confirm them. and check inside dash to see if there is more wires there (coming from your speakers).
Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: VWchapman17 on 02 August 2013, 22:58
the 2 blue ones are sub(on the right, the inputs) and the red and black ones are for the other speakers in the car, for the door card speakers and parcel shelfs. the small blue one next to earth is to the sub also, but I have to put the inputs into the stereo but only 2 can go in.. so then the sub wires cant go into the stereo.. so where the brown connector thing is at the bottom I need something to connect that to the normal speakers into the red nd black cable.. but its just finding an 8 pin connector..

if you understand me..

Brown plug is Iso to plug straight into head unit wires. This isn't standard cos its too old.
If you wanted you could cut the plug off head unit wires and join to factory wires its only there to make fitting easy and to make halfords staff look like pros.
Title: Re: project mk2 410

cut the brown thing off then connect the wires to what???
Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: weazgti on 03 August 2013, 01:00
Actually looking at pic it looks like black plug would of gone in head unit different to what you have and somebody has cut one of the Iso plugs off.
I'd get anew Iso from halfords and redo it. The brown plug would be speaker wires and plug straight in to factory wires IF somebody else has wired an Iso in. There must be some wires in dash still.

Post by: VWchapman17 on 03 August 2013, 01:40
there is another plug that goes from the black plug in the photo into the head unit, and that's new and came with the new stereo.. whats in the photo is what I had when I bought the car.. that iso lead there is from Halfords and hasn't been cut at all
Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: Sgt_Lemon on 03 August 2013, 09:23
You will normally get a plug that goes into the head unit but then on the end of that after some short wiring a big female plug that has room for two plugs. One plug is for for speakers while the other will be the lives and earth. You need to test the your live wires to find a ignition live and solid live. Wire the red wire from your head unit to solid live and the yellow to the switch live, this means you need the ignition on to turn the stereo on but it will turn off when you remove the key. Have you got some sort of live tester? It will remove the trial and error of wiring it up and turn it into a 5 min job.

Title: Re: project mk2 410
Post by: DubFan on 23 August 2013, 01:31
Did you get the MOT done?
If the car is on the road and costing you money to insure and drive, but you have no income, then maybe sell it.
But if the car is off the road and not costing you anything in insurance or petrol, I would suggest you keep it.
1) while you are out of work, you can use the free time productively to sort out the no-cost issues (like stereo wiring)
2) you probably won't make back your money and if you sell it you'll have to spend more to buy another car later on
3) you'll want a car once you're working again and you might as well keep this one.

I went through the same dilemma with my first Mk2. I bought it when I had a job, ran it for a year or so, then ended up on job seekers allowance, but I kept it because a) I would need it for going for interviews b) if I sold it, I wouldn't be able to afford another for sometime and c) it gave me independance.
(but I managed this because I was living at home and my parents helped cover my insurance for the 4-5 months I was out of work).

Stick with it. If you have no money for the car, keep it off road and fix the things that don't cost money. Take the seats and carpets out, borrow a wet-vac from someone or just scrub the thing clean. While the carpet is out, pull out all the stereo wiring, including the amp and sub and start that from scratch (I would start by getting the stereo working without the sub first, just get it doing the right thing with the dash/door speakers, then wire in the rears, then add the sub).
A Mk2 is worth keeping (trust me, I wish I still had mine). Keep it up.
