Title: Got a quote for my GTI today.
Post by: KennyGTI on 28 August 2012, 20:37
VW Leceister contact me today as part of a trade in deal I am looking at ( and others ) and offered me £15000 for my GTI! It's a 10 plate with 28k on clock, only extra is the monza shadows though but surely I should be getting more than that!? Or am I getting tight!?

To me that sounds quite a good price! I'd be happy with that price with a 'base' spec car.

Kenny I would sell private for about 17.5k or if you are trading in against something I would want about £2k discount on the replacement vehicle to accept their offer of £15k

Or sell private and push for a discount, a few Indy garages are offering more than the stealers

What's the replacement

Agree re the £15k being a good first offer. They might be increasing this slightly but it all depends on what you are PXing against - the price to change is the key - if the car you're looking at is very keenly priced they might not have much room for manouvre on the price and/or if they have someone interested in your car etc.

It is a game of smoke and mirrors!!

I would be looking at 17.5k with all my mods staying on it which would suit me TBH. Saves the hassle.

£15k without my mods is just  I will never get 2.5k selling them on!

Is an R I am pricing it against

Kenny

I would just play firm - remember (the obvious) that their first offer is never their best.

Have you seen another one at another dealer that you can then compare to and start to negotiate
Title: Re: Got a quote for my GTI today.

I always find it's better to sell my own car first, even if it means buying a banger to ride round in for a few weeks. If you are looking at a used car, then you can negotiate hard with cash.

When I bought the GT, I bid them £1500 less than the asking price, telling them that's all I could afford. I said, you've got the car, I've got the money, lets have a deal. After a lot of faffing and pretending to talk to the sales manager, he came back and shook my hand.

problem is selling a car worth £15k+ at the door. not many people are going to spend that sort of money on a private sale when a garage can offer the same car with some sort of security/come back. obviously the garage will be more expensive but in my experience selling a car worth more than 8k at the doorstep is pretty hard.

i would say 15k trade in isnt a bad offer to be honest.

im going to sell mine when its 3 year old and i would be chuffed if i got near 15k for it trade in.
Title: Re: Got a quote for my GTI today.
Post by: dubber36 on 29 August 2012, 10:54
There is that. I guess the most expensive car I sold off the drive was my 3 year old Leon Cupra for just over £9k (7 years ago) I tend to keep my cars a very long time, so they are not worth that much, but sell well as they are often much better than others around for similar money.

I'd still try the private route first tho'. You've only got the cost of the add to loose.

A friend of mine has sold quite a few of his cars through pistonheads adverts private most have been in the 25K->40K  range.
Title: Re: Got a quote for my GTI today.
Post by: carl1 on 29 August 2012, 12:27
Not a bad offer tho you should be able to squeeze a bit more out of them against a R. You will do well to get 15k in a private sale.
Title: Re: Got a quote for my GTI today.
Post by: Raffe on 29 August 2012, 19:55
If you decide you want to sell your mods, I would be interested in your exhaust [/vulture]

Have to agree £15k doesn't sound too bad from a dealer and I am sure your mods are adding little to no added value to the offer.

^This! Deffo put it back to stock and sell the mods.

I enquired about trading mine for a 35 at the dealer i got my car from, it's april 2010 manual, only extras are the wheels RCD510 and camera and paint, only 13000 on it but even so offered me £18750 for it which i thought was great! He also said that he could get me a 35 within a fortnight if i wanted one but suggested i'd be better off waiting for a mk7!

I then drove away from the VW dealer around the corner into the BMW dealership for a testdrive in a 1 series, 5 minutes later my VW dealer walks in as they're part of the same group! What ya doin in here?? :embarrassed: Lol

Agree. Be prepared to walk away - also it is the end of the month so if you are able to sign today/tomorrow that might help as they will want to hit their sales targets for the month

Or if they have hit their sales targets, they won't be interested

Seriously though, over the last couple of months I went round countless garages, to ask about a trade in against various different new cars. More or less all of them wouldn't budge on either a discount or increasing the price of the trade in despite me telling them I was willing to do a deal there and then. Every garage I went to commented on how immaculate my car was and you could definitely see it was taken care of but they still wouldn't offer a better trade-in figure. I couldn't understand some of their attitudes, it was as if they weren't interested in selling a car.

Last build week for mk6 is some week in October so a factory order might not actually get built......we wouldn't take a factory order now just incase it didn't get built.

That's not too bad a price IMHO for part-ex.  This is my experience :-

I have a March 2010 Golf R - fairly basic spec and 33,4000 miles

Mint condition, full VWSH on time and no mods or remaps.

Part-ex prices I was offered over the last few weeks were as follows.  I would add that these were against already discounted new cars (a new R at VW and a new RS3 at Audi) :-

£16,000 VW Dealer
£16,500 VW Dealer
£16,500 Audi Dealer
£18,500 VW Dealer
£19,000 VW Dealer
£19,000 Audi Dealer (but rang round his friendly 2nd hand traders to get this after the partner VW dealership offered £16,000 )

The lesson I learned was that VW dealers did not seem to want my car at the current time (maybe too many other part-ex's due to 1st Sept)

The last two quotes were after a fair bit of haggling with the dealer and I'm pleased to report that Lee (evo1986 on here !) from whom I got my current R gave me the best VW deal.

Yeah, red is close behind blue. I would spec the blue over the red but I cant complain at the price.

Going to start stripping my poor GTI this weekend and sell parts on. Spoke to REVO about removing performance parts and keeping it on stage 2 tune and driving it really calm, no boosting and they said that would be fine. Any comments on that this folks?

Slightly disagree with that, i've sold numerous cars privately at that price including my X5 which i sold privately last week for £32k. More expensive cars just take a bit longer that's all

Got to agree, I sold my Rocco off my drive, cash transfer over the phone. I rang my bank to confirm receipt and away it went.
