Got a quote for my GTI today.
« on: 28 August 2012, 20:37 »
VW Leceister contact me today as part of a trade in deal I am looking at ( and others ) and offered me £15000 for my GTI! It's a 10 plate with 28k on clock, only extra is the monza shadows though but surely I should be getting more than that!? Or am I getting tight!?

To me that sounds quite a good price! I'd be happy with that price with a 'base' spec car.

Kenny I would sell private for about 17.5k or if you are trading in against something I would want about £2k discount on the replacement vehicle to accept their offer of £15k

Or sell private and push for a discount, a few Indy garages are offering more than the stealers

What's the replacement

Agree re the £15k being a good first offer. They might be increasing this slightly but it all depends on what you are PXing against - the price to change is the key - if the car you're looking at is very keenly priced they might not have much room for manouvre on the price and/or if they have someone interested in your car etc.

It is a game of smoke and mirrors!!

I would be looking at 17.5k with all my mods staying on it which would suit me TBH. Saves the hassle.

£15k without my mods is just  I will never get 2.5k selling them on!

Is an R I am pricing it against

Kenny

I would just play firm - remember (the obvious) that their first offer is never their best.

Have you seen another one at another dealer that you can then compare to and start to negotiate

I always find it's better to sell my own car first, even if it means buying a banger to ride round in for a few weeks. If you are looking at a used car, then you can negotiate hard with cash.

When I bought the GT, I bid them £1500 less than the asking price, telling them that's all I could afford. I said, you've got the car, I've got the money, lets have a deal. After a lot of faffing and pretending to talk to the sales manager, he came back and shook my hand.

problem is selling a car worth £15k+ at the door. not many people are going to spend that sort of money on a private sale when a garage can offer the same car with some sort of security/come back. obviously the garage will be more expensive but in my experience selling a car worth more than 8k at the doorstep is pretty hard.

i would say 15k trade in isnt a bad offer to be honest.

im going to sell mine when its 3 year old and i would be chuffed if i got near 15k for it trade in.

There is that. I guess the most expensive car I sold off the drive was my 3 year old Leon Cupra for just over £9k (7 years ago) I tend to keep my cars a very long time, so they are not worth that much, but sell well as they are often much better than others around for similar money.

I'd still try the private route first tho'. You've only got the cost of the add to loose.
