Title: RNS510 Firmware Update 3810 / 4020
Post by: Rislar on 17 August 2012, 00:10
PLEASE NOTE NEITHER I OR GOLFGTIFORUM WILL BE RESPONSIBLE IF YOU UNDERTAKE THE PROCESS DETAILED BELOW AND SOMETHING GOES WRONG. YOU DO SO AT YOUR OWN RISK

Firmware 3810. It took about 50 minutes and upgraded successfully.

I had a Revision C unit and was previously running 2660 firmware:

I now have a "Version Information" menu item when I hold down the "Setup" button. When I click this it shows the following:

Delivery part number: 1T0035680D
HW-Version: H06
SW-Version: 3810
Active map coverage: West Europe
Active map supplier: Navteq
Map version DVD: 7074

The firmware upgrade deleted the maps and music on the HDD so i just reinstalled the V6.1 maps and added some music.

Nice new VW logo on startup and updated graphics and animation.

I followed these instructions and got the firmware from here:

http://www.mk5golfgti.co.uk/forum/index.php/topic,23779.0.html

I used the windows 7 to write the disk ( Maxwell DVD + RW ) or rather the image and had no problems with the install, it took around 50 mins.

Firmware 4020.

As above, took around 1 hour this time though, at first no controles on the steering wheel worked and the bluetooth module was missing but a reset after install put everything back.

My System now looks like this:

Delivery part number: 1T0035680D
HW-Version: H06
SW-Version: 4020
Active map coverage: West Europe
Active map supplier: Navteq
Map version DVD: 7074

This is the sourse i used for the Firmware 4020

https://docs.google.com/file/d/0ByTpaBJxxQsBY1RJNVBXajB6OEE/edit?pli=1

Theses are the differences from FW3810

1: NEW Faster navigation and user interface
2: NEW Automatic illumination control
3: NEW Enhanced destination input

1: The map scrolls smoother and faster in 4020.
2: Until now I haven’t tried it in twilight/darkness etc.
3: It’s faster when you enter cities/addresses etc.

Depends on your maufactured date fella, try and press and hold the setup button for around 15 seconds and that will get you to the sub menus on your RNS.

One thing I have noticed is that DVD+RW or DVD+R are the most reliable disc type for updating both firmware and maps.

I have had mixed success with DVD-R and DVD-RW and CD types.

Hopefully this thread might lead to a couple queries I have regarding upgrading the RNS510 firmware, long time reader but casual contributor.

Recently I updated the Navigation Maps to a new version, but it did not come with the Speed Camera's POI. So from advice on another thread here I purchased an SD Card, downloaded the Speed Camera database and tried to upload it to my RNS510 but the option wasn't there. My firmware was out of date (2760).

I read up on how to update the firmware, but from reading various posts I got scared off from doing it for fear of 'bricking' the unit. My main concern is with compatibility, I can access the Setup menu but I couldn't see how to find out what revision the unit is. I suspect it will be a fairly old one as the car is a 2009 plate.

Any advice on finding the unit revision? Not really keen on pulling the unit out of the dash unless I have too!

Funny enough mine was an old unit or rather is, you can do it using VAGCOM, but seeing as i didn't have mine to hand i removed the unit, its only a plastic cover and 4 screws, pretty simple really

I have a Dec 09 on a 59 plate and cannot seem to update the maps. When I put the DVD +R in, it acknowledges the fact that a nav disc has been inserted and asks if I want to save or read from the disc and then nothing happens. It's been in today for 2 hours without success.

Is there an issue with the units being able to read certain disc sizes ? The v7 I had was ok on a 4.7gb DVD+RW but this is a 8.5GB disc

Is it the RNS510 and what version number fella?

I've just upgraded mine to the 3810 firmware. It took about 50 minutes and upgraded successfully.

I followed these instructions and got the firmware from here:
http://www.my-gti.com/3093/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-3810-3814-3816-3818

I used the windows 7 to write the disk ( Maxwell DVD + RW ) or rather the image and had no problems with the install, it took around 50 mins, just need V8 Map DVD if i can find it (if anyone can point me in the right direction )

Did the RNS510 D firmware download work for the C unit you had?

I am looking at doing it all today but i think mines will be from an older version.

ScottA said he had a copy as well as VAGCOM so was gonna use the VAGCOM to check what i am running first then see which one i need to upgrade to.

also is here as well

http://www.my-gti.com/3354/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-4020-4024-4026-4028 (http://www.my-gti.com/3354/volkswagen-rns-510-firmware-upgrade-to-version-4020-4024-4026-4028)

If you upgrade to 4XXX let me now how it is cos if it isnt that much of a improvement over 3XXX then i might not use it.

New site?? weird - will take some getting used to...

Anyway, halfway through upgrade to 3810 - pretty scary when whole unit goes black for 1 minute....
What's new in version 4XXX software?

What's new in the recent G&H revisions of the RNS510?

What could i have possibly done wrong?

I seem to recall sometimes it says CD/DVD error even though it's fine. Try rebooting the RNS by holding <, > and the star witht hen disc in and see what happens.  :undecided:

Otherwise you might be better buying DVD-R's not RW's, I'm not sure what difference it makes (in theory they should both work) but I know the units can be fussy.

Winrar fella!
Title: Re: RNS510 Firmware Update 3810 / 4020
Post by: MonkeyP on 19 August 2012, 16:05
Yep not working. on the site its says

Download the files and extract them using winrar and you will have a NRG format ISO file to burn. Using Nero burn a DVD+RW or DVD-R (CDR works as well) at a slow speed (4 x is ok for DVD and 16 x for CD).

So it should work i would of thought.

tried it with a dvd+r as well and same thing.

Here you go bud:

http://www.robpol86.com/index.php/US_RNS-510_Video_In_Motion

I got it to work but only after it wouldn't take it at first, (Software outdated) do a reset with the disk in, that booted it, also it threw my maps all over the place to start with (near had a heart attack )  then settled and works like a charm

Thanks for that Rislar, mine is a revision C by the look of it. Can you tell me if it's possible to go straight upto the 4020 Firmware or do you have to install 3810 first?

Do I boot it with the firmware disc or the map disc. Could really do with these cameras and the othe poi.

Ill have to play as i never thought of adding them before i updated everything, cant see it being an issue though. I did notice they look to be in a different place on the update software so maybe thats the issue and they need to be activated

See i have non of the standard POI in the menu. with regards the added speed cameras i can add them as you have said but when i got to the POI menu in the maps it allows me to to go into the option but then there is nothing there!

either they have somehow been hidden or the upgrade didnt work properly

Right not to confuse you but the easiest way is to upgrade to V8 or read this and get a better understanding

Scroll down to page 9 first then read the rest.

Right i've just downloaded them and copied them from the SD card on to the RNS and they work bud, mind i had to zoom out as we've only one anywhere near us  You can add a few actually so i'd suggest copying that file on Sd card and adding it to the RNS.

Yep i did all that and i add them and them the POI option is active but when i go into it there is nothing on the screen.

If it was me id delete the old one on the RNS under Tools, Navigation, Personal POIs then reinstall, it'll only take a few mins! Will get on top of it im sure

Deleted the old one and reinstalled and same thing. even tried another one.

They are being loaded on and are an option as the POI option is no longer greyed out but there is never anything in the menu!

Considering trying another map and if that failed reinstall 3810 and see if it works then
