Khare did it (ebay chip) and I think he got good results.

This is true, so better gains from a custom map you recon?

you could buy an off the shelf chip and get ok gains, or spend more (much more) and get a map that is customized for YOUR engine and YOUR mods.

Before a remap though, get a vernier pulley and set the cam up.

Cool I'll order one soon.

Would love my 8v to be on the ass of a 16v

Khare That cam you linked does fit a mk3? It said mk4 and beetle but I thought that's the same one you got?

You will easily be able to hold your own against a 16v with them mods
My old 8v could keep up with them and all I had was a exhaust and filter.. Maybe the 16v car was not as healthy as my 8v, who knows but yeah I'd go for it, yours is a low miler.. Perfect base for 8v Turbo
(somebody needs to do that )

With respect, even with a cam, filter and chip your only going to be around 130 / 135bhp, 16v is 150 standard plus will pull more revs

You never know
I bought a vr6 with a rebuilt engine to swap but couldn't do. So got a mk4 vr6 to swap over and still didn't have the heart to do it.
I think one day il do it, already looking at pistons  :lipsrsealed:

Hopefully there ain't many 16v's that still have 150bhp

They always tend to make factory power sometimes even more as the miles go on and they loosen up.

theirs hardly owt in it, Iv had 3 16v cars
Performance difference was minimal, bit more on top end

Anyhow a turbo 8v would be a uber cool mk3, something different from 1.8t

Yes it would be different however to do the job to high standard would cost the same or more than fitting a 1.8t.

My 8v was notably slower

Post by: Khare on 17 July 2012, 16:59
Yeah even modded 8v is notably slower than a standard 16v.

It says for 2.0 4 cyl engines, including beetle and mk4 2l 8v. It'll fit yours

My 8v is a lot slower than my 16v, but as I said I just cant pull out a mint motor for something else. It's got 8 vw stamps and last one was at 25,000  (i changed oil and filters at 31000) so spending money on this engine.  I only want the cam for the lumpy idle

That was a lie! I want it because it's sh!t after 5000rpm

Anyway getting it put on Tuesday, same time it's getting cam belt and water pump.

Now waiting to hear back from carbon

Sorry to but in but i have the same problem, my 8v engine is mint with only 78000 miles on her, but just need a bit more power. i ll put a turbo in mine if someone can point me in the right direction

Could you not just pull the motor and mothball it?

I was only talking to Ben about this on Sunday, albeit for a brief chat.. Think it would be a bit different from the norm, and shouldn't be that hard to do..
It's something I'd like a go at maybe next year with a recon engine etc
We shall have to see how finances develop :)

Well it is not easy and to build it so it works well and lasts will be expensive also I have seen a few built and they tend to be around 160bhp tops, a 1.8t will give you more and it was designed to work with a turbo from the start.

id still like to see a 8v Turbo

Russ has the 16V Turbo so thats covered that side of things, just need a 8v one now

My 2p.

f**k the haters stick a cam in it then a turbo, this would be another special Mk3 and a credit to you and the golf world and our site.
Who cares if you can get more bhp for less money and mucho scene points its about being an individual.

+1

A friend had a turbocharged Mk2 8v, it ran about 170bhp at full boost and was real hoot to drive
Once he stopped stacking gaskets it was reliable as a std car

A 1.8t with a remap will be up past 200bhp and will last longer

Bang for buck yeah 1.8t

But I still think a turbo 8v is

Sticking with it's roots

I'd quite like a go at it, unless it did mount up loads, maybe at some point I'll price it up, and also be interesting to know if the standard ecu could cope with the turbo...

Wouldn't wanna be staacking headgaskets, would have to be a proper metal one.. Of sorts..

Gearbox would die pretty quickly too no doubt.

They die pritty quick on standard 8v

I didnt know you could even map the 8v ECU tbh, thought it was all chips?

It will not, you would have to go standalone managment.

That's an issue, however Ben was talking about hoping the vr ecu will handle his twin turbos, so will be seeing how he gets on, ifonline would need stand alone then.. " I'm out"  hear too many people struggling with stand alone stuff and it would still be my daily...

I do think it would be interesting to have a 8v turbo, would run a more reliable box as well..

Guys running 8v turbos in America tend to stick to the 020 gearbox. With regular servicing they don't go bang as easily as you might think

Agreed, bit of a myth that they are weak not much in it really construction wise.
Down side is they are not hydraulic imo
