I've had my GTI since March 2012 and so far I've had:
A new water pump
Wind noise fix
Gearstick greased as it was creaking
CV gaitors greased as they were noisey
It's currently with VW and their diagnosics equipment has noticed my remap  so VW UK had to be informed (apparently it's flagged up on the diags and sent to VW UK along with a full fault scan - nothing the dealer could do)
This week (and probably next) they're looking at:
Fixing bonnet alignment (done apparently)
Fixing xenon alignment as they blind everyone else on the road at the mo (also done apparently)
P0299 code - underboost - probably due to map but wanted them to pressure test the system and check common things like DV, PCV
Wastegate rattle (part ordered and being fitted today)
And most importantly, the clutch slip I've experienced, they've finally noticed some fluid leaking from the gearbox, not sure what as they left me a message but it's being stripped down and a few parts have been ordered in advance, so hopefully I can get that resolved once and for all! But of an awkward one with the remap though as I don't want them to strip it all down and then invoice me as VW UK won't cover the warranty
Time shall tell.
Also the door seals are very noisey but I'll sort them out myself
Not a great VW experience, and I must say worse than my Audi experience and that made me get rid of the A3, so next car is definitely looking like it won't be VAG!
-
That's a damn shame mate, but I know this already lol...hope something can be done!
-
What a pain must be very annoying and dissappointing. You must also part if the unlucky few that have a Friday car. Either that or I am the lucky one as I have never experienced any of these issues with my two MK6's. Hope these issues are resolved soon. Remind of who's map you are running as some claim they cannot be detected or is that just BS?

Shark performance mate and yeah just BS all maps can be detected, only have to log boost you can see it's running higher, or take it out for a test drive lol!
-
Also I'm hoping the fluid leaking is brake fluid from the slave because if it's oil then I think they will blame the map frying the gearbox or something like that
-
All the none oily bits will be covered; wastegate rattle is standard on the MK6's so that will be covered too
Fingers crossed they cover the rest.....

Just had a word with them and they said it wasn't oil it was brake fluid e.g. slave leaking. They're going to check the clutch and if there's any signs of wear, get it replaced too as they can blame it on the leaky slave. Can't fault em so far!

Oooo sounds promising then

Any faults found due to re-map should be covered by whoever did the map? :undecided:

In an ideal world, probably, but when the cars in bits sat in VW and they demand money to put it back together, who knows what would happen
Hopefully it never comes to that and it's just a leaky slave that's fixed and VW UK say nowt!
-
It will be very intreasting to see what happens ? Hope you its sorted for you!
-
Not had any problems personally with my Rocco but i am a little concerned they found yours to be mapped so easily, i was under the impression they would only know if they really went looking for it
i may have to remove my map before its first service :undecided:

They said a code was logged as soon as they ran the diagnostics which basically meant that the software had been modified, I'd already told them it was mapped anyhow as like to stay on their good side and don't have anything to hide but even so
-
I took mine in with it being mapped... And a bigger Turbo and no cat and they never said anything to me... I went into stock mode though on my ECU. Maybe that was what it was?? What map do you have?

Yeah I think this particular dealership would be ok with any modifications but when they can see the ECU has been modified and it is automatically recorded and sent to VW UK with a scan of the car, unfortunately there's nothing they can do, so putting it back to stock would avoid that I imagine. It's a Shark Performance map.
-
Did you have the map done at shark performance HQ or a local dealer?

Local but then had it tweaked at Shark's unit as I wasn't happy with it to begin with

Its at times like this I would worry about the warranty not being honoured, best of luck

To be honest the warranty can only be invalidated (or rather withdrawn) if the component requiring repair/replacement has been affected as a direct result of the modification. They can't argue that a squeaky boot hatch is the result of having swapped out the air intake for an aftermarket version.
-
Reading this gets me paranoid about mine after having it tuned.
-
If I have mine mapped I'll definitely be getting one of the tuning boxes that allows to be reverted whenever. However if VW's equipment is this clever, do we think they could detect something has been altered even if reverted back to standard?
-

Not sure - potentially - I think there's a flash counter so it depends if that is reset every time or not. I probably should have gone for one now that I think about it but I didn't have a problem with my Audi being mapped and it was into Audi regularly for warranty work, believe me!
Update on the first post, the wastegate clip has been fitted to stop the rattle and they've cleared the P0299 code again, the dealer suspects it is the remap causing it (as do I) but they have checked the boost pipes and so on and everything looks ok - and they also said it pulls like a train so doesn't seem to be anything wrong there, which I agree with I just wanted them to give it the once over for piece of mind
Just waiting on the gearbox/slave/clutch problem now :nerd:

That was my partly my understanding as well. Every time the ECU was written to it was logged however it couldn't be erased.
-
I wonder what the Doc thinks on this subject as he did mine, although i don't have to worry to much for 15,000 miles to go till the first official service.
-
Just been told the car is ready. They've fitted a new slave cylinder and clutch as the original had some wear, probably down to it slipping because of the leaky slave. Also realigned headlights and bonnet, fitted the wastegate clip and checked hoses and so on for boost leaks. Can't complain, so will go and pick it up either later today or tomorrow

I know yea, although must admit the amount of times it's been in already I'm pretty relaxed about it now and couldn't really give a sh1t anymore, if it's not I shall be driving back home in their courtesy car and they won't be seeing me until it's right lol
Must add I have every faith in this garage that it will be fine. I think I actually trust them with my car which is definitely a first for a main dealer.
-

I'd agree you really need to think of the possibilities well in advance when you do something like this.
Consider what just happened to me. Last Monday my car refused to start when I left work. Not the sort of thing you immediately think is major, but the RAC couldn't get it going so towed me to my local garage. That's where I get the servicing done, and it's not a dealer. The garage phoned the next day to say it was a catastrophic fail, and a warranty job, and would have to go to a dealer.
As it happens, my car isn't mapped and there was nothing (well not much) to hide, and I arranged for it to be taken to the dealer I bought it from, 25 miles away. I'm sitting here waiting for a call from them to tell me I can come and pick the car up, after they've done the final checks on its NEW ENGINE.
The last time I saw the car was when I walked away from the local garage towards my house, over ten days ago. The rest of it was all done by remote control, as it were. If there had been a map on that car, trying to get everything back to original spec before VW got it might have been possible, but it would have been a major headache.
Even as it was, I was terrified VW were going to find some way to repudiate the warranty, because the car had been serviced by a non-dealer. For example, purely hypothetically, if the garage owner had happened to fit a non-branded air filter at its last service three weeks previously (because he couldn't get hold of a branded one), and that was on the invoice he'd given me, he'd have had to alter the invoice to make it look as if a branded one had been fitted. Or else VW would have repudiated the warranty even though the failure had nothing to do with the air filter. Or so I believe. Entirely hypothetically you understand.
Even as it was, the local dealer was repeatedly harassed for every minute detail of everything he'd ever put into that car, including having to provide proof of purchase of the branded VW long-life engine oil. He obviously satisfied them, since VW are now playing nice and the new engine is being fitted under warranty. However, it's scary. I dread to think what the bill for that would have been if they'd found some way to wiggle out. And that's without anything as off-the-wall as a remap. (And by the way, they refused point blank to give me a courtesy car, due to the non-dealer service, and as I was all booked to go on holiday with it, I had to hire a car at my own expense.)
So all I'm saying is, don't assume every encounter your car has with VW can be pre-planned and prepared for. You too might find yourself stranded in nowheresville with a buggered engine, and limited opportunities for making sure everything is presented to VW as it should be.
-
Rolfe there has been a couple of folk on here I believe who had a remap and have had engine work done / replaced on warranty without a problem. There certainly has over in the other VW forums.
My local Verve where I bought my Golf had leaflets on ever salesman's desk for a 3rd party company offering remaps. If that's not an endorsement what is?

Fingers crossed for you Scott!!

 dude, hopefully that's the last of what so it seemed endless issues...

Well, fair enough if it's a regular OK thing. I remember it being discussed as if it wasn't when I first bought mine though.
And of course anyone can offer a remap on an out-of-warranty car. I'd want to see what the salesman said if I enquired about the possibilities offered on one of the leaflets.

Thanks all.
Car drives sweet at the mo. They mentioned they didn't adjust the bonnet but had to refit the front bumper to get everything lined up but looks ok.
No damage as far as I can see which I worry about when leaving it at a garage for days, but will check properly when I get chance to clean it, as requested they left it alone.

Good to hear bud!

Nice, shame ya not at inters on Saturday. I notice you've got a club stand pass now, nice one.
-
Right...... I think the clutch problem could be back. I can feel the pedal clicking/sticking as it comes back up. I have a horrible feeling that the slave cylinder is leaking again, could be wrong, the car also felt very smooth pulling off and changing gears immediately after picking it up but now it's back to its usual self of jerky gear changes (or I'm just a sh1t driver again)
For those of you with a GTI, can you hear a clunk when you press the clutch repeatedly, or is it silent?
Fed up now

Sorry cant help with that but just to say hope your suspicions don't turn out to be correct. I would be straight back down to the dealer and get a master tech to looks this and the service manager. Good luck
-
my pedal is very consistent (consistently vague and no feeling ) but makes none of the noises like you described so i guess something is wrong?
i wonder if there is a leak elsewhere in the system? the bleed block on top of the gearbox maybe?

Scott,
Others have had this problem so seems you're not alone. Check out the link below;

Ugh! It's so difficult to drive the car smoothly, sometimes I think it must just be me??? If I let the car drive along in first, no gas, then put my foot down, even slightly, it sometimes jerks like crazy! It makes it really difficult and a right pain in the arse in slow traffic or pulling off slowly. 1st > 2nd isn't smooth but it gets better as you get up the gears.
Fcuking sick of this car now, think it may be up for sale very soon :lipsrsealed:
-
Thanks for the replies btw guys, appreciate it. I'll have to call AGAIN tomorrow and book the car in. No doubt there will be a 2 week wait.
-
just a thought but could the jerkiness be down to an engine mount? that would make pulling away smoothly and jerking on acceleration happen.
hope you find the problem

Cheers mate. Booked in again for 9th. Feeling like I'm being a right pain in the arse but something is definitely not right!!! May have to compare clutches with a few people at Inters lol
-
my guess is bottom engine mount is shagged.

Hi Scott,
Are you still dealing with Chester Volkswagen?

Hi mate, I am indeed. I must admit Chester VW have been fantastic. It's not their fault that the car is a bag of sh1te and they're always helpful. Like I said before I feel like a right pain as I keep going back !!

Guys, something else I've just noticed that seems a bit weird. Does your gear stick feel quite loose when in gear, 2nd is probably the worst, I've done a video, it seems to go into gear fine, if I'm being picky it's a bit noisy but it's always gone straight into gear

Need to know whether to take it back to VW or not.

Just a thought... Does the dealership you take you car to not have another gti on the forecourt that you can drive with one of the mechanics so you can go compare! ?

Just tried mine. There is a degree of free play from side to side when in gear, but I wouldn't say it feels loose.
Do you know anyone else with a manual mk6 Golf near to you that you could check yours against? The only way you'll really be able to tell if yours is the same or different to other mk6's is through 'feel'. Alternatively, if your dealer has another GTI in the showroom or a used one for sale, can you ask them if you can check yours against theirs?
-
^ mine does what the video shows.
Infact the knob even moves slightly on mine but i think thats just the clip inside needs nipping abit tighter.

Cheers guys. That's my next thought, if I somehow managed to get a GTI for the week if they have one there, used or whatever, and if I cannot replicate the "problems" then it puts no doubt in my mind that it's my car, but if I can then I'll have to accept them as "features" lol
Thanks for checking all, kinda sh1tty that it moves around so much. I'm still going to see if anything can be done about it, but glad (in a way) to know it's not just me.
