Just bought myself a Nikon D5100 which comes with a standard 18-55 mm lens. What telephoto lens would you guys recommend I purchase as a companion to the standard lens.
-
Out of interest what make you choose the 5100? In termof lens you get what you pay for... If you want something cheap then id say the tamron 70-300 which is around 100 quid.
-
really depends on your budget, as said 70-300 is a nice range. Nikon also do a 55-300 and 55-200 which will cover the full range (as you've already got 18-55). The Nikon lenses come in around £275 and £200 respectively.
Also why the D5100 when the D3200 is out next month?
-
Was offered the d5100 by a mate who only used it once so it was a bit of a bargain at £200, no way would I get the new Nikon for that so was a no brainer or me.
Thanks for info on lenses.
-
Bargain for 200 quid.
-
Yes it was defo, and not a bad camera for a relative beginner.
-
I just bought a new one of these for £550, then I get 65 squids cashback.
Very good camera so far as a noob! rather quickly buying kit and printing guides off the t'internet before a very last minute trip to tunisia this weekend.
d5100, 18-55 kit lens, 16GB lexar pro class 10 133x SD card, cleaning stuff, fancy Tiffen 0.6 ND filter, bouncy neoprene strap, lens hood, second battery and as it was cheap .... a remote.
Bag insert hasn't arrived from the states in time, grrrr! Will wrap it up in a towel Arab style for the trip.
Planning on selling the gf for a camel whilst I'm there so should have plenty of cash for some new lenses on the return. woo!
-
think you may get a little frustrated with the 18-55 lens as they arnt great, did they offer an option to upgrade to the 18-105 lens?

Future Developments (In Order):
1, 10-24mm
2, 35mm Prime
3, 70-300mm
4, Graduated Filters
Based on ATGNI principles, I'm trying to be conservative.
-
I would say start with a prime (50mm is the cheapest and most popular because it lends itself to many situations), then a 70-300mm to cover distance and then worry about an ultra-wide (10-20) which is going to cost more than the previous 2 lenses combined.
Don't forget to add a tripod, otherwise that remote is pointless.
And then if you want add a flash.
You don't want to be ATGNI.

nothing wrong with going for the 35mm, 35mm on an APSC crop ~ 50mm
'The 50mm lens is called a "normal" or "standard" lens because the way it renders perspective closely matches that of the human eye. Consequently, images made with a 50mm lens have a natural and uncontrived look. This is the lens that likely would have come with your camera had you bought it 10-15 years ago.
a 50mm lens on an APSC body actually gives you a 75mm lens which will flatten objects down.

Nice list, if you can afford it get the 10-24 before you go away, assuming you've going to Tunisia to see the country and not for the sun, it will be a great lens to have with you.

I was about to query the 50mm choice on the c sensor.... I know some people still favour it, whats ya thinking dubfan?
Sadly it's a seriously short notice trip for three nights, sun chasing, but this does afford me plenty of time to go off shooting whilst the gf sits by the pool.
Mosque's, Souq's, Kasbah's, Medina's and beaches. yum yum!
May go back at some point, quite fancy trying to find that second sun on Tatooine.

My original reason for going for the 50mm f1.8 prime was that it was the cheapest way to get a prime with good glass and a lower f-stop. Also 50mm is equivalent to 80mm on film, which is a good portrait length.
I now have a 28-70mm f2.8 which gives me a 44~112mm 35mm equivalent. This is now my preferred lens for most uses. (Although I'd quite like a 24 or 30mm prime too)
It's all down to what sort of photos you want to take. If you're just starting out, the wide end of your kit lens will suffice for a while, but it obviously only goes to 55mm which leaves your long shots uncovered, hence why I would go for a telephoto before going ultrawide and a reasonable telephoto 70-300 will be cheaper than the ultrawide.
But if you have plenty of money to spare, then sure go get an ultrawide. If you don't use it, you can always sell it.
Personally I'm currently aiming for a 70-210 constant f4 telephoto lens because I'll use that more than a 10-20mm (which is on my list), but it's down to personal preference and the type of photos you take.

Good good, I'm on the right track, wide angle lens it is! :-)
-
I got a 10-20mm when I got my 500D a couple of years ago and I have used it SO heavily.
While I back up the 50mm prime recommendation I cannot temper the enthusiasm for a good wide-angle lens - they add a LOT to your pictures out of the box, because the images are so cinematic, just be careful shooting at the widest end of the range as you will get barrel distortion of the image.

so gizzy, what you done with yours so far?

Certainly going to put in a claim, still somewhat shocked about it tbh.

Sat on a bench beside the boats cruising the Lake, a guy came and asked me the time and whilst I was checking my watch another guy just knocked the shoulder strap down and just snatched the camera away, as I stood up to give chase the first guy smacked me in the eye. Nice people...not! But thanks I am ok really, pride took a battering and loads of people just stood and watched.
-
Shocking behaviour for the Lake District.
I've wandered around London numerous times with my camera without a problem, but you wouldn't expect that in the lakes.
-
Opportunists I think, I've been to the Lakes countless times and had no problems before. This is not meant to sound racist because I am not a racist but I do think they were foreigners by the accent of the chap who asked me the time, he sounded European.
-
cnuts! I hope they get cancer of the cock!
Don't let it put you off getting another camera.

Thanks, not sure I would wish that upon them however I appreciate the sentiment lol. I have put a claim in and will certainly buy another.
Years ago I had a Pentax ME Super so may think about a Pentax instead.

I think the brand names Nikon and Canon on a strap make them more attractive to thieves. People see Sony, Pentax or Olympus, they're probably not so bothered because they wouldn't fetch as much selling them on.
It seriously sucks, but at least you can get a new one.

Really sorry to hear about such a brutal attack in such a place, I really think you are unlucky and this is not the norm.
Know what you mean about how people just watch things happen.
Just back from Holiday in Tunisia and did see the odd unlikeley chap looking at my camera, though with a manky bag, electrical tape stuck on parts of the camera to make it look used and old and being 6ft 3 all worked in my favour.
I also chose to wrap the strap multiple times round my wrist, meaning even if i let go of the camera it was still firmly attached, if they cut the strap, the web of strapping round the wrist would act like a knot. I just hoped they don't have machete's there.
I also took a photo of one very dodgy chap and cycled the memory cards at first opportunity.
