Nikon D5100

Just bought myself a Nikon D5100 which comes with a standard 18-55 mm lens.  What telephoto lens would you guys recommend I purchase as a companion to the standard lens.

Out of interest what make you choose the 5100? In termof lens you get what you pay for... If you want something cheap then id say the tamron 70-300 which is around 100 quid.

really depends on your budget, as said 70-300 is a nice range.  Nikon also do a 55-300 and 55-200 which will cover the full range (as you've already got 18-55).  The Nikon lenses come in around £275 and £200 respectively.

Also why the D5100 when the D3200 is out next month?

Was offered the d5100 by a mate who only used it once so it was a bit of a bargain at £200,  no way would I get the new Nikon for that so was a no brainer or me.

I just bought a new one of these for £550, then I get 65 squids cashback.

Very good camera so far as a noob! rather quickly buying kit and printing guides off the t'internet before a very last minute trip to tunisia this weekend.

d5100, 18-55 kit lens, 16GB lexar pro class 10 133x SD card, cleaning stuff, fancy Tiffen 0.6 ND filter, bouncy neoprene strap, lens hood, second battery and as it was cheap .... a remote.

Bag insert hasn't arrived from the states in time, grrrr! Will wrap it up in a towel Arab style for the trip.

Planning on selling the gf for a camel whilst I'm there so should have plenty of cash for some new lenses on the return. woo!

think you may get a little frustrated with the 18-55 lens as they arnt great, did they offer an option to upgrade to the 18-105 lens?

Future Developments (In Order):

1, 10-24mm
2, 35mm Prime
3, 70-300mm
4, Graduated Filters

Based on ATGNI principles, I'm trying to be conservative.

I would say start with a prime (50mm is the cheapest and most popular because it lends itself to many situations), then a 70-300mm to cover distance and then worry about an ultra-wide (10-20) which is going to cost more than the previous 2 lenses combined.
Don't forget to add a tripod, otherwise that remote is pointless.
And then if you want add a flash.

You don't want to be ATGNI.
