RSPCA all the way buddy, too many dogs out there that need re-homing without encouraging people breeding them.

staffies/terriers that have come from chavs who sadly don't look after them and know their needs, which have been purchased as fashion accessories, innit, to make em look like they have a pitbull, innit... and then abandoned

More to the point. Have you seriously thought about this?  Owning a dog is a commitment for several years.

This.

And don't forget all the extra needs a puppy will have over a slightly older dog. It'll need house training, will nip and generally be a nusiance until they get a bit older. We've had a lurcher pup since christmas, must be 7 months old now? A lot better than she was, but still a lot more difficult than the others we've had.

Rehome a dog, not a pup, pups are ARSEHOLES, trust me, we've had a few. There are so many dogs out there that need a home, we have a Frenchie we've had from a pup, an A Bulldog we adopted an shes nearly 4.

Also as Elvi said, seriously think about it, go with your missus to the centres an find one together.

Trust me though, it aint nice, you end up wishing you could take them all!!

You can have the new one. She's called poppy and is very stupid. Yesterday I watched her walk face first into the coffee table and fall off the sofa.

Indeed, we have a Choc Lab who is now 11 years old. It is a problem when you have kids and want to go out for the day and it is unfair to leave them locked up. I would like to go to my parents some weekends but due to having a dog were restricted. Kennels are £13 per day and all the costs do add up, vets bills (I don't know how much we have paid out over the years but it is a lot). As much as I love the dog (Molly), if I could have seen ahead, I would have persuaded my wife (g/f at the time) to not have one, selfish? maybe.

Think about it before you go and get..............................................................thats why there a loads being dumped as people don't realise the commitment.

if i could have my time again, id never have a dog, let alone 2! ( a boxer and a shar-pei) the muddy feet, the occasional puddle ( worse has been known) the chewing of fave shoes and plants, the lack of grass left on my lawn..the stealing of any food left on worktops.. the vets bills, food bills.. the lack of room on the sofa, the crying when they hear me pull up in the car..... the list goes on.. its no wonder i can only afford a mk3!!
think about it carefully they are cute for the first few weeks.do your research into lots of breeds.and for god sake dont buy a puppy as a surprise! and always get good pet insuarnce
good luck xx

IMO Get a rescue dog or older one. I bought a 2-year old Alsation cross 10-years ago for £40 from a family who were emigrating. With a bit of training (tended to have selective hearing when out and about!) he has turned out to be an awsome dog. Not a nasty bone in his body, great with my 3-year old and not quite right in the head (still chasing his tail at 12?! ).

As for "Chavvy" dogs, it's a shame that they have a bad name. The owners are to blame. I have known a few Staffys in my time, and always found them to be very friendly and good with kids too.

When "Old Ben" has gone will I get another.....? I can't imagine life without a dog. Would I buy a puppy.....No!

I have a fridge magnet which says "The more people I meet, the more I love my dog". Ne'er a truer word spoken.

Thanks for the responses guys.

This isn't a spur of the moment thing, she was going to buy me a dog (a lil Labrador or what I call Andrex puppy ) but as I have a cat  she decided against it. She has always wanted a dog aswell so seemed like a good idea.

A rescue dog was the other thing I was looking at as obviously they have been trained to some degree ie potty trained lol, so could be slightly easier.

As guy said a lot of the dogs in RSPCA etc seem to be staffs or similar and I wouldn't want one of them  Nor would she

Looking more at, labs, Dalmatians, sausage dogs   her next door neighbour has a Dalmatian andntheynsre just too big and boyish in my opinion

No doubt. Love boxers . Was looking at getting one before the Ali-cross. A bloke near me had 2 and they were absolutely mental!! You could see their heads bobbing up over the 6-foot fence when you walked past!!

Plenty of family members, neighbours who would look after it if needed and if it was well behaved lol. My brothers wife father has a dog called Luna and she's great. Couldn't meet a nicer dog, has a real high pitch bark when u throw her the ball

It's not fair I'm stuck with a car that sleeps, eats, poos then scratches, bites if u try to stroke her. Tell u, black cats are the devil  if it was mine would get rid but it's my dads so it has to stay

Title: Re: Buying a puppy
Post by: Lankylad78 on 18 April 2012, 14:52
Not a cat lover. My Uncle had a cat called Snooky (stupid fecking name!). It would beg for food like a dog. So you'd give it a bit, then think it must like me. Go to stroke it and it'd tear your hand to shreds!!!

When it comes to cats and dogs though, the cat will rule. They always seem to go for the eyes . The dog will learn pretty quick me thinks.

Maybe I'll get a mastiff just to scare the cat

Cat runs away when Luna comes round, runs and hides in the cupboard  stupid cats

Our cats just give the dogs a slap. We have 2 lurchers which you can't rehome with cats under no circumstances.

So far we have had 5 lurchers and approx 10 cats spanning the 20 years of ownership.

Good luck finding your new friend - if you have a specific breed or type in mind there are plenty of breed specific rescues who could help

It's a shame the reputation that comes with owning a staffordshire bull terrier. My sister has a rescue one and he is such a lovely dog, even my mrs loves him and she isnt a dog person but he has really changed her perception of them. As mentioned though because they became a fashion item for chavs people see them as viscous dogs when that couldnt be any further from the truth.
