Title: Carbon Grey Edition 35
Post by: wigit on 17 April 2012, 12:16
Thought I'd say hi having been a long time lurker and introduce yet another Ed35 with the correct compliment of doors and in the fastest colour so a 3 door manual in carbon grey metallic with steel finish watkins glen alloys with the following options (I didn't go mad and no ACC box ticked as never rated it):

RCD510
Dynaudio
Storage pack
Luxury pack
Parking sensors
Flat tyre indicator
Cruise control

first modifications added after an hour in the form of a 35 badges for the boot and interior:

next was a little trip to Daventry so they could work some magic while i run it in

a few other piccies (I'll spare you too many as no doubt sick of the sight of them):

the Ed35 joins our GTI Pirelli (used for family duties so hence the wrong number of doors and hence only Revo Stage 1):

and Ed35 replaces my Stage 2 Scirocco:

always have been a fan of Mk6 GTI as build quality has always felt better than the Scirocco, Ed35 has not disappointed and now its running in its character is starting to show, absolutely love the car and don't miss the Scirocco at all (which was standardish when sold) and i think VW didn't do a bad job for a standard car

Any more mods planned ?

That Rocco looks LOW

Post by: wigit on 17 April 2012, 21:07
thanks for the feedback gents, i have no such issues with mrs w on the boy racer front given her daily

liking the subtle mods Murrayedition35

essentially its going to be a stage 2 car this year (never say never to 2+), currently have a set of engine mounts, arbs and short shift in the garage, also have coilies and brakes but fancying a change to those this time, exterior wise i like car how it is except for one tweak

rocco was about as low as i could go for daily driving, i have a sh#tty for the city for daily duties so can play with the Ed35 a bit more

I know I'm biased but I still think the grey is the best GTi colour.

Having said that, I still love white ones.

I like the red '35' badge....goes well with the black. Where did you find that? I've seen the chrome finish '35' on ebay.

You can get the red 35 badges from

http://rb-styling.com

However there not cheap and the web site is in german...but it works for me...

the price for those isn't too bad considering 35 badges are £29 from VW

well the car passed the 1,000 miles on its way to Daventry so i did stick to my word and waited until that benchmark (1,002 from memory) before the Ed35 got mapped (pic outside Revo as for them to scan the stock file for calibration purposes)

had the call last week from the guys at Revo that the production file was ready and could i spend the morning with them to set things up today and they had been doing some work on the K04 code compared to the map on our Pirelli so the plan is to do some back to back driving of both on the same route to give them some feedback (i am under orders to let mrs w drive and see what she thinks)

was also good to bump into Greg Emmerson of Eurotuner/European Car Magazine in the States who i'd last met when i took the rocco out a bruntingthorpe for a feature so he took the opportunity to have a gander at the Ed35 (he''s not sure on the wheels)

no dyno figures as should be as per the usual K04, i'll put it on the rollers at Surrey Rolling Road and i'm told should be available through the dealers at the end of May

Very nice looking car

Is it mechanically different to a normal GTI or just running a different map and a few cosmetics?

If I'm perfectly honest, I've completely changed my mind about the brakes on my car. Previously I had nothing but problems with them (fade, warping etc) but I've since completely replaced the brakes (new discs and pads all round) just with the standard components and after bedding them in very thoroughly I must say I'm very impressed with how they are holding up.

I'm looking forward to seeing how they hold up on the 'Ring this summer.

Can I just also say, looking back a your first post that is a really nice Scirocco. I really do like what you did with it. It's pretty much how I'd have wanted a Scirocco had I bought one. I especially like the way the exhaust shows - I'm a bit weary of the whole dual exit exhaust as on the Scirocco R. The twin side exit looks really understated

in reality most of the inspiration on the Scirocco came from the GTI community, theme was always fast road, mods on it were

Revo Stage 2
ITG intake
Milltek/VWR TBE with ceramic finished tips (shallower rear box believe it or not)
VWR/Vibra Technics engine, gearbox and lower mount
Short shifter
VWR KWV1s and ARBs
Porsche 4 points on fronts and GTI rears (rear set up on roc is smaller than GTI) courtesy of SteveP
Team Dynamics Pro Race 1.2s in Satin Anthracite
Carbon effect vinyl to anything gloss black, lower edge of bumper, badges and rear diffuser

i sort of liked the fact that not many rocco owners really got it

well its time to get the Ed35 ready for inters, a tall order but we'll see how we get on

first up spare rear bumper lower section now with body shop to be finished gloss black

new aero aid acquired on way to pistonheads sunday carefully removed with no damage to car

not going to give anything away on the components at this stage as may go a different route in certain areas to what i did on the rocco and we'll see how i get on in the time period  :lipsrsealed:

S3 shifter
TBE
Intake
Revo Stage 2
Coilovers (2 way adjustable)
ARBs
Replacement engine mounts
Brakes (but not going to rush these)

Is that bumper section already primed/smoothed ready for paint? And is it a vw part or aftermarket section?

It's the normal VW one so not smoothed or primed, in reality, my local VW bodyshop wouldnt  touch it, fortunately there is a bodyshop next to Revo who did this on their mk6

Feedback from another local bodyshop whose work I rate is they prefer to have it unsmoothed as sanding can cause scaring and they just build up the layers

I'll probably get a clear film applied over it for protection

Thanks for that. How much is it costing to paint etc?

I think the diffuser is around the £65-70 mark from VW (can't remember exact price) painting wise £150+ depending on where you go (in reality I had confidence in the chaps doing this)

Not checked to see how easy it is to remove the existing and whether it's bumper off etc, in reality I've got access to a ramp to assist

For me e stock one looks worse on the lighter coloured cars

apologies for some mk5 whoring

well a day of rare occurrences in today, the sun was out, the Pirelli was clean and even more rare mrs w le :grin:t me borrow it for a decent run and i still love it especially the wheels and seats, cars now at 49k, been mapped for 40k and on its original clutch

not driven it much since the Ed35 turned up even though the Pirelli is the main reason i bought one, was nice to see the differences in the map compared to the later Revo file on the Ed35 (which feels more sophisticaed but is equally as fast)

mrs w hasn't driven the Ed35 yet

Ed35 is on sport contact 2s, i'll probably get a second of wheels in next few months and slap some AD08s on them for cocking around as AD048s are i bit overkill for my needs

having been dense and posted this in my own thread i am now being dense and can't delete it, i blame the sun, anyway treated the Ed35 to a trip out and had a nice BLT, normal service should resume shortly, now move along nothing to see here

car just looks far sharper with it done, in real it it needs a zorst with slashed tips to fully carry it off but for me is OEM, in reality had same issues with rocco when you have to shell out to get rid of the comedy ride height (which i am sure is due to pedestrian safety legislation)

work so far got the approval from one of my neighbours who for the mk2 fans is Danny Smith from the original Oxford Edition, bit ironic that back in the 90s i loved their stuff and 20 years later you end up living practically next door to each other

and some engine mounts from Revo which will be interesting to compare to the VWR/vibratechnics i ran on the rocco

car was dyno'd today with file i had run and a revision to that file which makes better use of what VW blessed the later K04 cars with and how you achieve somewhere between the two

well bit of a hectic day today for Ed and the crew at APS in giving the Ed35 a makeover before it goes stage 2 tomorrow

so initial feedback is as follows:

Bilstein B16s and Eibach ARBs

Never heard a bad thing about the B16s and in reality love the damping adjustment as its so easy to do, currently on a conservative set up but going to pick the brains on Bistein on what they recommend, car is settling at moment but may need a tweak to lower the front a tad and raise the rear. In reality the VWR Arbs I had before were Eibach with rather expensive blue paint so i knew what to suspect.

Ride is firmer but damping is in a different league to stock set up so gone is that jiggy jiggy feeling you get with the stock suspension, steering feedback has improved as had turn in

No picks till ride height is fettled

Revo Engine Mounts

Engine mounts are a love em or hate in terms of the vibration but the rocco really benefitted from the full vibratechnics ones, all be it were a but intrusive, but the always preferred the payback in terms of putting the power down and cripser gear change, so all three are on and have to be said not as intrusive as i thought at tick over or at bite point as i think the dog bone one is probably i little more forgiving (i'm not feeling the need to put my spare subframe on with the VWR lower), Revo have had the damping on these looked at from the old BSH days. Only slight vibration was due to sunglasses, car feels more engaging

Miiltek Race TBE

Always loved this system on StevePs mk6 and like the support so for me this was always my first choice, was a bit concerned on the noise front but no worries has a nice grown up feel and looks a quality product, car is sporting the 35 tips as they have no gloss black in stock so may get swapped out (i like how you can adjust them), its no shrinking violet and not everyone wants a TBE but i've never seen the point of going just catback, so looking forward to getting the Stage 2 map on to exploit this, pleased with the choice given BCS had approached after i had ordered the Milli (they do some good stuff just Milltek have a large dealer network)

You are obviously not worried about affecting your warranty with all these mods on a brand new car....hope nought goes tits up!

well Ed35 has been packed off for a few days to http://www.detailmyride.co.uk/ for Nathan to give the Ed35 so much needed tlc having now removed the Inters livery

ordered some furry dice and hoping they arrive for BVF

also want to preserve the oem 35 mats so got some genuine VW GTI ones

really loving the car at 60-70mph on the motorway it feels standard in terms of comfort, however, if you want to drive the thing it comes alive, chassis mods have really made the car feel so much more controlled, the additional ponies are also very handy for reducing your exposure when overtaking

next on the list is brakes....

i'll post some piccies following the detail as i want to tweak the rear ride height a little

It's running the latest Revo Stage 2 file (Revo have found fuiling improvements on later K04 cars) with linear throttle map, I'll get some dyno figures from Surrey Rolling Road at some point

The pork stoppers are boxster/cayman brembo 4 pots that work with stock 312 disks, currently being refurbished in red by brake legend DaveB, prob won't run them on ed35

They are may favourite two shots of the rocco

well its time for some long overdue pictures of the Ed35

car had some subtle branding for GTI International and i'd deliberately held off having the car detailed until after the shown and most of the mechanical modifications were done and Goodwood FOS was out of the way

car was shipped up the Nath and Gaz at detailmyride.co.uk for some much needed protection and removal of a parking door ding

Car looked on arrival at DMR HQ:

Following a 2BM wash with Auto Finesse Lather and Lambswool Mitts, decontamination with Iron X and Tardis revealed little in the way of any contamination!

Once pulled inside and dried off with microfibre towels, the only areas requiring any real correction were the black gloss trim and rear lights, which were tidied up with Meguiars D300 Correction Compound and Pads, before later being refined (pics pre-refinement)

Paintwork was then cleansed with Lime Prime via DA, before applying Auto Finesse Tough Coat as the LSP to paintwork and wheels. Finishing touches including glass, tyres etc were completed and the interior detailed.

Please note in some of the pics tyres had second coat of Swissvax Pneu to the tyres, and had not been buffed so some excess is visible!

more than happy with the results as despite the weather water mainly beads off and its really easy to keep on top of things

i need to tweak the ride height at the rear as slightly to low and have some recommended settings from Bilstein so may try some a firmer set up, also exhaust tips need adjusting but been waiting for the gloss black set to turn up

i drove the Pirelli on the weekend for the first time in ages and it felt slow (despite Revo Stage 1) but biggest difference was how the suspension upgrades had sharpened things up and car just gives your more confidence

I'm going to have to get these brakes sorted.

every time i drive the car it seriously pisses me off at how bad these brakes are. downright frightening sometimes.

why the frig did vw fit such poor brakes to the car costing so much? there is no excuse.

and why is the steering rack SOOOOOOO slow??? the GTI requires a good 1/4 more lock to make turns my hum drum focus 1.6 requires.

and why the hell does the clutch have absolutely no feel whatsoever and the engine is on its own agenda in 1st gear making slow driving/pulling away near impossible to be smooth.

these things REALLY ruin the car for me and to be honest its getting to the point where I'm not really enjoying driving the thing any more.

nice job with the detailing. car looks good. really impressed with the lights and black door parts.

my porkas are currently being refurbed in red (as need some tlc) but not decided if they are going on the Ed35 as i have a feeling i may need spacers (which i'm not a fan of), looking at other 4 and 6 pot options with bell sized to allow stock wheels, brakes are next priority

car was faultless during its 2,000 mile trip in france, no grounding issues and only some adjustment of the dampers which at 3 all round is perfect for road

since coming back from france Revo settings have been increased to B9 from B7 and it certainly goes well

attention is turning to brakes in next few weeks as a birthday treat...

So at car had done 9,000 miles and had first service so intake time courtesy of Revo, this is the Race version with ceramic coating:

Smoothed TTS engine cover added to tidy up the engine bay

This made a big difference and car is pulling circa 330bhp on the dyno and in gear pulls nicely

Biggest issue was brakes as no BBK fit under the stock rims without spacers so attention turned to wheels and brakes.

Wanted something a bit different on the wheel front from the usual suspects so went for some gun metal TSW Nurburgring RFs which way in at 8kg in 18x8, offset is 45, wanted an understated but manacling look:

Also tts cover was looking naked so some 35 decals applied:

Brakes then fitted, leave the huge discs for the queens out there, so went for AP 4 pot set up with 330mm discs, these are epic and shed loads lighter than the stock set up.

So when i built the 35 i wanted a car that was capable of doing a European road trip and some track action so decided to kill two birds with one stone.

Decided at a couple of days notice to take a Road Trip to Germany with just the car, the tom tom and me, plan was:

- Harwich to Hook of Holland on Ferry
- Holland to Wolfsburg
- Visit Autostadt and VW Museum
- Wolsburg to Nurburgring
- Nurburgring to Calais via spa

Car was faultless, coped with jams in Belgium, 150+ on the autobahn and the ring, a few pics of the car on its travels, got about 168mph on the GPS and still some way to go

Outside Autostadt

Well always thought the 35 was going to be a keeper but borrowing one of these got my thinking

and then seeing one of these is likely to seal its fate next year

have also made the decision to put it back to Stage 1 as it is getting used more by the wife and me at the moment so wanted to wind things back a little, so the car will be keeping the following chassis modes in the mean time:

Bilstein B166 PSS10s
Eibach ARBs
Revo Lower Pendulum Mount
AP Racing 4 pot brake kit
TSW Wheels

Next Wednesday the car is booked into AKS so the following the following will be for sale once i have checked condition:

Milltek 3" turboback race system
Revo K03/K04 ceramic coated intake system
Revo Engine Mount and Transmission Mount
S3 rear calipers refurbished in red with new hoses
Subframe with VWR engine mount

I just think i'm getting old as want a R with DSG and DCC two things i never thought i'd say

I think the MK7 R looks more special in Blue with the wheels below...the wheels above don't look special enough and look more suited to a Bluemotion...

Sorry guys

I still don't like the Mazda3/ last model i30/ceed style raised bonnet on the mk7 , I think it's another styling faux pax like the new Leon which looks just like the Hyundai/Kia That can't be right :undecided:

I'm loving widgets ed35 though  the wheels are helping convince me to go for the BBS SR's for mine in the spring.
It works well on Photoshop

Agree, they look really cheap and tacky.  Love the other wheels though.

Well the final bits were removed from the 35 so it is now back to standard and about to get a detail before put up for sale, its an odd feeling as doesn't feel like my car anymore and my Polo is more modded, that said you forget how nice the 35 feels out the box, looks like the Pirelli may be going for a more door R for the wife so the parts clear out will begin soon but the following may be of interest:

Bilstien PS10 B16s
Eibach ARBs
AP Racing 4pot 330mm kit
S3 rear callipers in red and hoses which are freshly refurbed
Subframe with VWR Engine Mount

35 will be sold privately so hoping it finds a good home

Hi mate, do you still have the car? I currently have an ed35 with a stage 1 and am considering a stage 2. Can't decide red or non res and wondered if I could have a look/listen to yours?

I sold this car in 2014 and swapped it for a 7R, I ended up hating the Milltek on mine as it was just full on, if i had kept it would have gone back to Stage 1 with all the other mods kept in tact
