Well after having my Golf for 6 days, its going back for a full refund..
Its just cut out on Mrs Swanny on the motorway doing 60, turns out the immobiliser is still half active.
Been to the garage where I got it from, and the garage owner isnt in, apparently uncontactable by phone but he is back in tomorrow..
The guys admitted that when he took it for the mot it cut out and wouldn't restart.
Dodgy garage, annoying thing is its cost me 150 quid insurance deposit, 115 quid tax, 40 quid MOT ( i had to pay for the mot they paid for the work ), and then 70 quid for new ht leads spark plugs and air filter ( trying to rectify the misfire)..
New hunt for a decent mk3 golf continues but feeling very down today !
-
sorry to hear
surely the garage will/have to fix it now?
Who diagnosed it to be the immobilizer?
-
the garage may offer to fix it, but since it cut out on Mrs Swanny I honestly doubt she will want to drive it or trust it,
and if their fix will be a real fix if they have already sold it knowing it had an issue.
Its been diagnosed by my friend who is a Porsche mechanic, due to the nature of the fault it cant be anything else, and the garage removed the old immobiliser as in their words "it was playing up"

Good luck with that one......

Water in the electrics perhaps :lipsrsealed:

garage is refusing a refund,
they have taken the old immobiliser partially out, and now thats whats cutting the power, but they are saying the car is bought without warranty or guarentee, despite one of their staff admitting to me the car had a problem when he mot'd it, He has also dopne the invoice as a trade sale, although when I bought the car nothing was mentioned as it was advertised on the forecourt at the sold price.
its going to get messy I think, he's sold me a car thats not fit for the purpose it was bought (in this case driving), and apparently I'm being dramatic because it cut out at 50 dual carraige way ), and that the mechanic who looked at it first cant be a decent mechanic as we got the replacement ht leads and sparks from Halfords (he has trade discount),
this guys quite clearly itk that hes sold a duff car..
currently its parked at the auto electricians after the RAC guy that towed it there confirmed its the immobiliser thats cutting the power.
fricking great !
-
and that the mechanic who looked at it first cant be a decent mechanic as we got the replacement ht leads and sparks from Halfords (he has trade discount),
Well, it's no good a mechanic looking at it when it's an electrical fault.

to be fair we didnt know it was that at first, Rob just offered to come round and see if he could figure it out, and we got its started, oput it down to a bad connection across the leads..

No joy from garage? Trading standards. Statutory rights. Merchantable quality etc.
Failing that burn their garage to the ground.
Hope you get it sorted.
-
yup, i'm playing their game purely incase it goes down the trading standards route, the autoelectrician started on it yesterday afternoon reckons he will have it sorted for this morning.
They're bascially taking apart the fuse box and removing anything thats aftermarket, i.e. all the alarms/immobilisers
its got a push button start under the dash board too !!

did you even look under the bonnet when you bought it?
-
of course,
full test drive about 10 miles, push starts hidden right under so wouldnt have seen that,
just had someone tell me through facebook there was guy outside the garage with a sandwich board saying dont buy from here.. why couldn't he have been there last week !!

eh? You didn't start it on the test drive?
If they're wriggling about how it's been sold and that it's been sold as seen (etc etc yada yada) then there's no such thing from a business. You have your basic consumer rights on any purchase. It is NOT sold as seen - that's only possible between two people, not business to person.
Get all the after-market shyte out of it - this will nearly guaranteed cure it of the problems.
-
its the ecu and transponder thats goosed, trying to source one as we speak.
037 906 025a with transponder and key :(
-
No you are not, you are going back there and telling them to refund you or you're calling the police. They're not doing things the right way round and are trying to get out of it. Shaft them.
-
Police won't be interested, it's a civil matter.
-
You have legal rights with any car purchased from a garage, if they will not help speak to trading standards
-
at the moment i'm playing "the game", to be honest if they uphold their end of the bargain i'll be happy as its mint condition, theyre currently offering to pay half of any bills to get it on the road (its looking at costing about 180 ish),
however I'm going to be ringing trading standards tomorrow/going down the legal route incase this fix doesnt work.
-
any offer to pay towards repair is an admission of guilt. you have them by the danglies. tell the other garage that's repairing it to give you a reciept for £400 (give em a score sure they'll do it) and then go and recover all your costs. then shop em to trading standards anyway
-

Just make sure you have it in writing, or it ain't worth the paper it's not written on.

Exactly and do not up the price with a 3rd party if you think you need to involve trading standards. You will be dropping other company and you in it.
-
well iyts back again, cuts out bob on 94 degrees, can let it cool down and then starts back up again
-
how much did you pay for this sh1thouse?
-
bloody 700 quid, wish I hadn't bothered now.
changed the oil and filter tonight, someones just pointed out that some non gen crank sensors dont work too well, so i'm prob going to have to change that too..
It will run sweet as anything when i finally get it working as everythings been done !
-
been to a vw specialist today, hooked it up, and apparently its the hall sender, as the distributor is not in the right place (im a noob so this doesn't make much sense to me),
oh and apparently my breather pipes are buggered )
-
Just read this thread sorry mate you sound like a good lad for this to happen but £700 you was better buying of the bay TBF. But hope it gets sorted fella!
-
apparently the hall sender always pops up under diagnostic. I wouldnt worry to much.

bugger...
i'm not further forward with it..

I work for BMW our older petrol engines have similar problem being crank shaft sensor. Ok till warms up when hot cuts out and doesn't start. They split and open up at operating temp ok when cools down a bit. Doesn't log any faults either, my old mk3 gti also had fault when driving car felt like cut out for split second when driving. When sold lad said would start that also turned out be crank sensor.
-
they'll run without the hall sensor.
on mk3's i view cranck sensors as a SERVICE item on any of my customers cars if it has a cam belt it gets a cranck sensor ( unless its just had one)

think this is a must have on mine then, they've replaced the crank sensor as the old one was touching metal, but might have used a non-gen or cheapo one..
sorry that the thread has turned into a workshop one.. but I really appreciate the help with this guys :)
-
OK had a prob with mine kept cutting out for no appent reason wait then ran fine
changed everything elec then went to fuel side found a filter in the pump pickup cleaned that and it ran till i sold it 4 years later
-
crank sensor...
non gen had been fitted...
130 quid later ( i managed to find the most expensive garage)
-
£130 in labour!
Its about 30 minutes work, AT MOST!!

this is a common fault with the mk3 golf and infact there is a whole thread about it on this very site,I had the same issues as you describe and changed alot of things, then tried the crank sensor and that totally sorted the problem and it's run fine ever since (2 years now) it is abit of a fiddly job to do but not difficult at all and takes no more than half and hour!! anyway I hope the car now runs sweet.
-
well they had the part as 58 quid and the rest was labour..
quite an expensive garage but I'd had enough of playing games with it..
-
My Anni had the crank sensor issue. Was fine from cold but as soon as it warmed up it cut out and would refuse to start until cooler. Hopefully mate that is your problem, get that sorted and all should be good.
-
my old mk3 golf use to do exactly same. did everything had a the ecu checked put a new crank sensor. leads plugs . and still had the same fault. what i found in the end was a relay and it a common fault can remember the number off my head the solders crack and cause the car to cut out and not start
