Title: Wireless Help
Post by: R32UK on 04 January 2012, 15:11
Following on from another thread (well sort of) I am still struggling to maintain an wireless internet connection whilst sat at my desk (laptop).

Now this got me to thinking... is there an ipad app that I can use to boost the wireless signal within my house??

It works well in some places but my desk is the one place it cuts out... once it starts, it just goes on and on.

A simple app that uses the ipad as some kind of bridge (i think thats the correct term) ... anyone know of anything??

Nope, that'd require two wireless network cards which the iPad doesn't have, unless jail broke and using the iPad a MiFi (3G for internet access, Wifi as a Wireless access point).

Have a look at the Home Plugs, they extend the wired network from your router using your power points around your house you could get two (1 into the power circuit and the other as an access point to plugs into to give internet) and a cheap wireless access point plugging into the 'desk home plug' to extend the wireless network. Give the Wireless Access point the same name as the original name, but make sure it uses a different channel to the other, preferably as 'far' away on the channel range as poss, IE original is on Channel 1 and the other is on Channel 13. Otherwise just use the network cable from the home plug to the laptop, cheap home plugs give enough speed for what you want and cost around £15.

Or a repeter?

Are these the Home Plugs??

http://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-Link-TL-PA211KIT-200Mbps-Powerline-Ethernet/dp/B004INVKP4/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1325691373&sr=8-1

Slight hi-jack.... do you plug an ethernet cable from your router into one and then plug the second Home Plug into a socket in the room you want?  I assume you can then connect wirelessly to the second plug?
Title: Re: Wireless Help
Post by: Jay on 04 January 2012, 15:49
The second plug would need a network cable coming out of it into a PC/Laptop/network switch/Wireless Access point, unless there is a wireless version for the second plug?

Router -> primary Homeplug -----> power lines through house -> Secondary Home plug -> PC/Laptop/Network

This should function as a wireless access point if ignoring the Cable Router side and add a 4 port network switch to the area (network printer, other PC's PS3, xbox etc), coupled with the cheap sub £15 home plugs (from ebay,  they don't appear to be on Amazon) would add immense extensibility.

Guys that is fantastic help !!!

I think I may just go with the plug in method as that would ensure I dont have to mess around with wifi anymore.

My only other slight concern is that my house was extended a few years back. This means that the electrics for the entire house are actually split between 2 different boards. So I dont know if the router socket is on the same circuit as the office socket.

Would this be a problem??  :undecided:

I work in broadband/network/wifi technical support - so I may be able to help.

First off, what router do you have.

Second, what's the distance that you're trying to connect from/to.

There may be ways of sorting it without forking out any money.

thanks vdub.. to help simplify this, my internet has always worked through wireless at home in my office (last 3years or so with o2)

the router is plugged directly into wall socket which is main point of connection coming in.

the router is on the ground floor and I am on the first floor. the direct distance from router to laptop is approximately 5m directly. it is in an open hallway down stairs. the office is just above the router but maybe 2-3m to the side.

I also keep the room door open which connects onto the landing and downstairs hallway.

the connection is very strange as it will work fine for hours... then keep dropping every 10mins or so for a few hours.

o2 have tried to change the frequencies 3/4 times now, which didnt solve the problem.

o2 Have replaced the original router with a new router, but still have the same problem.

My concern is I have Virgin coming to install a new connection on friday and the router will be positioned even further away (10-15m approx)

Any help would be appreciated

That is an odd one.

You say o2 have changed the frequencies. By this, I assume you mean channels?
Wireless signal strength depends a lot on what other devices are near by, thickness of walls, type of walls and even, believe it or not, fishtanks (lol)
There's so many things that can cause interference.

The first thing I would be doing is moving the router (if possible) to another location.

The next thing I would be doing is changing the channel. The default is usually set to "auto" or 11. I would be changing it to 1, and testing from there. It's trial and error.

Then I would be looking at compatibility issues, ie what network card you have. I would get another device and use it in the exact location of the laptop. If this device maintains a consistent connection then you've narrowed it down to the wifi adapter/network card within the laptop itself.

Is your router G or N by the way. Not that it should make much of a difference to be honest for such a short connection!

As an example, I used to live in a 3 storey house. I had a G router, and the router was two floors down from me. I maintained an consitent connection even with this distance.

I will check through the list of other stuff it could be. As I said the strange thing is it all worked well before  :undecided:

I do find that if I have my phone near the desk this causes problems on occasion. Although its almost impossible to be at my desk without a phone near by.  :undecided:

The phone may well be interfering. I'd have a go at changing your channel to one, and working from there. Depending on what router you have will determine on how you access the routers page.

For example, I think netgears are the usual 192.168.0.1 and belkins, i believe, are 192.168.2.1

Could even be your neighbours using their wireless on the same or 'neighboring' channels, there are only really 3 wireless channels, with a slight variance between each giving the additional channels you see, the main ones are 1, 6 and 11 with two 'neighbors' either side bar channel 1 which doesn't go into 0 or -1 as it's at the start of the wireless frequencies, if  that makes it easier to understand.

Is there a specific time it goes tits or is it random?

If you really wanted, you could monitor things with http://www.netstumbler.com/ whist it's up and working make some notes of the networks you see and channels leave it running for a while and save all the info, and when it goes wrong makes some notes about the wireless network names and channels they're on etc and comparing your notes to figure out which has the least neighbours when it's going tits. but tbh, the home plugs and a network cable to the laptop and/or a wireless cable router should add enough extra network ports (good for network printers, NAS drive etc ) and wireless access for you and cheap enough to set it all up coming in at around £30~ all in for the Home Plugs and a cheap Wireless Cable router, or £15~ for cheap Home plugs and a network cable

One more thing to check - Is it the laptop losing connection with the router or is it the router losing connection with the exchange that's causing the issue? Are all your telephones, sky box etc installed on microfilters?

i refuse to plug my skybox into anything!!

everything else works fine. I have been told that the router doesnt lose connection with the exchange. It seems to be the connection between laptop and router.

Strange as it started doing it about 30mins or so ago but has been fine since. I even sat on the floor right outside my office and it jumped to 5 bars and worked perfectly!!

How is the wireless connection being made. Is it a USB dongle on the laptop? If so check it's not some power saving mode on the laptop or on the USB port that's powering down

I noticed a GPU mounted next to a wireless card is a bad idea, esp if there is a high powered fan motor next to it.
I tried a passive cooled GPU and signal improved greatly!

I had wireless problems in my house untill I got airport extreme and airport express (which is plugged into the wall socket upstairs)and now where ever I am in the house the wireless signal is 100% plus I now have the added bonus of AirTunes,5ghz wireless (which is only delivered to devices that can handle it) and
My hard drive is plugged into the extreme for wireless saving and retrieval oh and wireless printing.
all in all apple have saved the day........again! it's also a doddle to setup and is pretty much idiot proof,
Annnnnd theres an app so you can control the wireless settings from your iPad or iPhone.
I know there's alot of apple haters but I'd say the airport products really are two of the best products they have.

ok an update....

Had my 50MB line installed today and spent quite a bit of time discussing the problems I have been having with o2. He states that the virgin router uses n rather then g which is much better.

So once its all set up we take the laptop back to my desk and test the speed..... 1.5 . I was getting 3.5-4 from o2

Anyway... he then told me to try the little usb dongle thing to help things along after they had gone. Well as expected that was no better. I expect the network plugs to be delivered early next week. Lets hope things improve then.  :undecided:

Yet to try the laptop elsewhere as I had to go out... but will be testing it once I am home. Not impressed so far

Sorry mate I've already said I had wireless issues with my lads one that runs on N router tech!
I've part solved my issues by ordering a longer router coaxl cable and sticking it in the hall way
Mohamed comes to hill instead of hill goes to Mohamed

In the settings there is a 5GHz setting you might want to try that and fixing a channel most Wireless old thech uses 2GHz so if you get a dongle make sure it uses 5Ghz to improve signal!

As for my useless information on my last post suck on eggs!
If all else fails stick a coat hanger into the back of it

However I only managed to test it for about 5mins before I had to go out. Will give it a proper test tomorrow morning or tonight when I am home. Will be getting a good 'ol testing all over the house to compare from previous connection with o2 (which I stil have thanks to your thread )

I think you should give it some time plus reading the forum on Vmedia has some tips on improve range, weird I find my router jumps speeds its like it will hover around 5-6 then if required more it takes some time to get the full speeds. I'm not sure if its the ping or quality of line in question, but I have seen MAX 20 on a torrent, but thats only what other people are giving me my upload never hits more than 1 max 3.5?

I use newsgroups, have done for about 6 years now and will never ever use torrents again.

Benefits of newsgroups is:
download at you line speed
dont up load anything
you arent dependant on people uploading
99% of files are complete and work great

D-link powerlines arrived today.

All i can say is they are very good and do exactly as they say on the tin and would recommend to anyone!! In fact they are so good that I have ordered another set this time with the wireless repeater.

This will allow me to have a hardwired connection for the tv downstairs and upstairs, and a plug in connection point in my office as well as a wifi repeater upstairs (just in case)
