Hi all,
I have had vag com for some time and recently wondered about remapping.
Now, im certainly not naive but I have to ask, how easy is it to remap. I know I would have to research it thoroughly and attempt it with real caution. Question is, is it worth the hassle??
Ive not read of any one else trying it so I assume I have answer my own question!! Still, opinions are much appreciated!!
-
1. you cant do it with vag com..
2. if you need to ask that question, dont even attempt it..
don`t mean to sound like a thingy but dont want you screwing your car up..
generic maps are generally easy to do if it goes right. if you want to do some custom work i suggest you buy a book like i did. there is loads of information on google...
to do it properly you need a dyno load cell, you can do it seat of pants on the road but its not easy and you wont see as good results!
-
I thought as much but I was curious!
Would love to give it a go but mainly would still like for my car to run!!
-
Leave it to people that know what they are doing.

agreed

I think if it was that easy we would all be doing it !!
-
You can map some 1.8Ts with vagcom....
-
Let on how its done then..lol

come on nick spill the beans can see a new business being opened up from my garage

Open up a business relying on an ebay vagcom lead? Lmao.....

google...
All that is required is a FTDI based USB OBD cable that works in "dumb" mode.
Tested supported cables:
-eBay USB VAG KKL using the FTDI D2XX standard driver
-Ross-Tech HEX-KEY-CAN using the Ross-Tech FTDI D2XX driver ("boot in intelligent mode" must be unchecked in the VCDS options screen)
-Any dumb OBDII cable using the FTDI USB chip
The fun part about tuning is learning imo... now go and learn Jedi's
google google google
ps I am always here wiling to help if things go tits up.
-
Need to learn how to map first! lol
-
I thought I'd read somewhere it could be done from vagcom with some models. If for no other reason will research this now! I would love to try little steps at time....hmm
Look out for my next post asking how to fix a dead golf!!
-
i also read that it can be done too but i wouldnt, not with an ebay lead..
-

Some ebay leads.. but only on Me7 ecus.
-
ive been trying to find out about adding 12v feed to the m3.3 and what software to use, i got cheap ebay software but again, wouldnt touch it..
-
take a copy of what you have before you write over it.
tuneing is much more intresting when your experimenting and not exactly sure what will happen, once you know it works and what will happen its rather more boreing

isnt that the hard part with some ecu`s?.. are some write only or something? i`m not sure if that what "dumb".. means.
as for experimenting, it would be nice to have the equiptment.. could probably do logging with vag com or is a wideband 02 sensor needed?.. and then, how do i hold the car at certain load points, left foot braking and burn them out?..lol
makes me even more limited having an agu
i have a galetto, vagcom and vag tacho lead to play with but would rather leave the ecu alone until i have a decent tool to do it.. then if i can get better at it, nicks life will be easier when i come for tweaks hopfuly... :undecided:
-
Theres sooo much to thing about though. Not a simple case of upping the boost and the fuelling and hoping it works. Its knowing where to make the right increases in the software and how far to go. Then what axis you have adjusted effects what else.
-

That's a gem right there, always store the original file from your car so you can go back to the starting point if you cock it all up
Best of luck and as stated you have Nicks number to sort it all out if it goes sideways.....
-
IMO the best way to learn about mapping is to go and get a cheep mappable ecu like a megasquirt and wire it up to some old donk of an engine and piss about with it an 8 valve mk3 golf is sutable, rattel it to hell and back a few times it'll learn you a lot. then look at OEM ecu's at least that way you'll start with an idea of what you want to change and just have to work out how to do it.
-
exactly, which is why i wouldnt want to touch it yet! :embarassed:

ive built a megasquirt before and done tonns of reading of how it all works.. the megasquirt was years ago and the car i fitted it to was an unfinished project. i got the ecu built from scatch and got it reading all the sensors and it would read crank speed ect..
was a very interesting project, cant remembr why i got rid of it now... it was an old citroen going to run throttle bodies from a gsxr600..
im not really interested in aftermarket management, it would mean chopping my ecu and all the  i do have a simulator software to play with i had with a book and is a sim of the emerald stuff... will have to dig it out..
-
The VCDS/FDTI is only to read and right the ecu, the next thing is to get get the map in to a format which has map axis, then understand which each map mean, why is that map there and how does changning that map effect all the other 5000maps, then once you understand the map you need a theory to change it to produce power, checksum the map load the map and log,log log.

i kind of understand, probably not as simple as using an aftermarket ecu as these have their own sofware where you can just click on a table and up it will appear, then do your alterations and then write.
i suppose with OEM stuff on the golf, it would be a case of reading it, then copying the file to an editing programm then back to the read/write program to flash it back to the eprom? just looking on the net for decent programs and hardware to do it with.. i have found a forum that seems o.k... as i said, though, i wouldnt dive straight into it, i only have one engine, one ecu and an empty pocket. when i had the megasquirt, building it, installing it and getting the firmware onto it was the easy part, obviosly the mapping went straight over my head, the more i read, the more it kind of confused me.. though i probably now have a basic enough understannding to get an engine to start, idle, free rev.. there were so many different settings to take into account..
a very interesting topic, and certainly not for the faint hearted!

hexadecimal... f`ing great!

hexadecimal... f`ing great!
Hex is super simple but you'll be there for a while, you need a map editor like this: http://www.tactrix.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=category&layout=blog&id=36&Itemid=58
-
cheers guy`s you`ve been more than helpful (in someone elses thread) sorry for hijacking..lol
i have found loads of info so far and i think i know what to get... gonna go with an mpps to start with..

WinOLS.
As nick said above...its knowing what adjustments you make in one area and how it effects the other areas
-
i understand completely
-
Certainly interesting to get into if you have the relevant documentation to read through and understand how the ECU works. I can only mind Me7.1 documentation from bosch and nothing for ME3.8 :(
Only thing is...you will need to find someone to give you a stock AGU map file as you cant read from the AGU 3.8 ecu :(
-
you have pm

how would one get a 12v supply to pin 43? would it just be a case of splicing into the loom?...

You'd goto the ecu connector, this may end in tears btw.....

WinOLS what?

howcome?....
i was thinking..i might have a play on my scenic first..
its easier to tap into the ecu and has no boost :undecided:
-
I had a look at a A3 1.8T map I found online last night.....Without map packs in WINOLS.....you might aswell just be looking at squiggly lines lol

i am not going to even attempt it without all the relevent information. i dont really want to map my car, i just want to learn a little about tuning. at this stage i would leave it to the proffesionals.
-
apparently, jumpering pins in the obd port can get you there. best leave it as that though.. :embarassed:
-
I did mine by jumping the pins....pin 16 and pin 13.
Just having no luck finding any sort of map files for winols for a AGU. :(
-

i know, figured out on that "speshul" forum.. not alot of info out there for the m3.8.3 though is there, you can use settings for the A3 m5.92 (i think thats the code).
figuring it all out in winols is a total nightmare though  there must be better software out there?
-
I think its all down to the map packs you make in winols. All ive managed to find so far is someone posting me3.8 map locations, but they in a .csv file so no idea how I can get those into winols to make the data look and make sense.
Unless you are very very good with google to try find how me3.8 works, then data is very very little :(

Legend! I've looked for ages trying to find anything me38 related and information is really very little! Should help with learning how things work for sure!
-
-
care to share?... [pwitty pwwweaasee]
-
I havent got anything yet lol.
-
lol, i was asking nick, but if you don`t mind when you do i would be more than grateful..
-
Have you managed to find anything yet Jamie?
Ive found a Dam0s pack for me3.8 but unsure of its accuracy.....and its all in german.
Also got a couple other packs....one for a A4 1.8T and A3 1.8T
However, copying a map, for example RPM from the Dam0s pack into my remap file for my car......says I have a rev limiter or 10200 hahaa. So Something aint right.

You lot use google and leave the tuna's alone
(http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_7hDh0rSj-Ac/S7onei68ZEI/AAAAAAAAADo/pj4vMN6tPno/s1600/tunatin.jpg)
Sign up to an ECU forum, loads of helpful people on there, but they won't spoon feed you as remember this trade is their bread and butter, they will challenge you somewhat. Also look for existing guides out there, I'll list a brilliant one:
http://s4wiki.com/wiki/Tuning
Keep original file, it will make life easier than going "errrr lads I need original file for xxxxxx"
Dig out info on the cars limits if possible, search file names and what they do as well as map size (eg 256x1) and location etc...
See if possible what people have already done similar and aim for a similar setup - this will help you learn, especially if some people will blindly tell you the advance etc they set on the same engine
Look for various tools on the internet to aid in calculations, bosch have one for there MAFs
Enjoy and use a condom
-
Another good place for basic ECU info is kit car forums, they will be running after-market options like megasquirt-II etc.. on there lotus 7 1.6 zetec replica's, also read up on otto engines and a few basics like injector lag, flame burn time etc...
-
Haha, I understand its a VERY deep ocean to learn to swim in for a beginner....but we all have to start somewhere.
Ive read that the 3.8.2 packs are very similar to the 3.8.3 pack (80%) and it will help pick out a lot of maps from there and is a good starting point.
Done expect to be spoon fed answers here, I have plenty of time to sit down read, read and read some more now Im stuck in the house recovering.
Just a shame there isnt much ME3 info out there....unlike ME7 where you can find masses of info very easily.
-

It's all part of the "fun" if your relying on it.

ME3 is a lot simpler, plenty info around. Get on some ECU tuning forums from time to time they have mini guides and manuals you can download.
You can flash the ME3.8.3 via OBD, but remember if the cars been mapped you may not be able to easily retract the original file as tuners add security features to safegaurd their work, otherwise you coud read the eeprom and distrabute there work without any effort.
Its all good fun, plus on the ECU forums a good thing is edit or attempt to write a map from information you gather and submit it for a rate on the forum, you will get feedback and people will advise what needs to be done or mistakes you have made, as well as guide you to what you have missed out.

Have a look there mate :(

Hi there I have just had my golf 1.8T aum remapped with a full turbo back exhaust runnin a sports cat but ever since I've had the map done it keeps dropping the boost right down to 0.3bar and it will stay like that for a few hours then start boosting up at the correct level again...... Just wondering if anyone had any idea what the problem could be and how to solve it?????.
-
Any fault codes?
Might be detecting overboost?
