Heeeellloooo chums!
Picked up a Renault Scenic Auto tonight (02 plate 2.0) as my Girlfriends new car, family run around an ting.
Well, on the test drive, lovely, faultless. tonight, terrible the followng issues have arisen....
Gearbox was veeerry slow changing out of 2nd, getting upto nearly 50 before changing up, no matter how i drove it, an before the smart arses come on i've driven Hundreds of cars and know how to drive an auto.
At one point whilst cruising at approx 55 i had to tap the brakes due to someone pulling out further up the road, now i believe the box changed down to 1st or 2nd as it caused the car to skid and epically sh!t me up!
Interior light comes on under heavy acceleration
Engine management light is now on.
As soon as i got home i called the garage i bought it from, theyre no shower of sh!t, local garage, selection of MPV type things and apparently reputable. Now, the previously very nice couldnt do enought to help proprieter changed his tune a bit, telling me its a quirk of the gearbox and the 'Fuzzy Logic' system renault use (EH??) and to see if the engine management light goes out.
So basically, i get a bad feeling this could get messy, i had to hang up on the guy before i exploded.
I want to do this properly first, then if all else fails i'll try my way
So...any hints an tips on how to either get the car working properly or my money back, like photos, keep records, what?
I just want it working because at the end of the day that car carries my Missus an the Little one so cant have an unreliable sh!tter that can lock up randomly!
Cheers
Jord

Cheers dude, i'll have a read through dem links dere!

Do not get involved in trying to resolve any of the issues, any 02 plate Renault should be regarded as scrap, lots of faults cant even be fixed by a dealer... get money back, or part exchange for something else.

Thom is 100% spot on.
Avoid them like the plague along with A class merc and Peugeot Auto's
-
Yeah, ah well, lets see how it rolls!
Shame as they're perfect functionality wise....just the actual 'car' part thats a let down

check the gearbox oil had a problem with a w reg one same sorta problems although eml wasnt on gearbox one was, changed the oil in the box and not been back since. regarding the locking up that does sound worrying. I asume all the lights are working as been known for garages to pull certain bulbs as the scenic also has a gearbox light eml and another engine management light looks like a lightning strike top right corner of the dash. and of course the abs light.
The garage also do have the right to repair the car rather than refund and if can not repair must refund or with mutual agreement offer a replacement but so many modern autos have problems its untrue. In fact so many modern cars have problems as cars are not built to last anymore.
However we have sold loads of manual scenics with out issue just insure had a recent cambelt and waterpump change. oh and if fitted both sunroofs work as its one cartridge and a bi@ch to change
-
Yeah thats the reason i chose this one, as its Full renault history with belt an pump last year, one owner blah blah an all the windows/sunroofs an sh!t worked properly
-
GRRR!!!
-
Hello blah blah garage
Hi its jordan here, the EM light is still on, can you come an collect it to have it sorted
f**ks sake .....mumbles to someone else.....
line goes dead!

Have you got grounds to reject the goods?
As in not as described.

Have you got grounds to reject the goods?
As in not as described.
Well, have a look in my first post, would those reasons be enough to reject the vehicle?
an jack to be honest the only reason im not there now is my littleuns hidden the keys somewhere!
-
Do you know a friendly garage or mechanic that could check it over?
I would suggest rejecting the goods, and asking for a full refund.
If they refuse, get a written report done of the faults, and take them to court.
Also you could get trading standards involved if you believe the car is dangerous.
A trader selling a dangerous car will land them in court regardless of what else you do.
-
You could try ringing your local trading standards for advice.
They may be willing to intervene.
-
Jordan.
Get you money back, or that fails Px for a Volkswagen Touran mine is brilliant.

Sales of Goods and Services Act covers you here. Even on a vehicle like this, if the car becomes faulty to the extent that you believe it is something the selling dealer would have known at the time of sale then they are liable to fix it or you can reject the car fully and claim a full refund. the only way in which to enforce this however is via the courts. I would.
-
Before you get another garage to look at it you must allow the garage to fix the faults, trading standards will confirm this.
By allowing another garage to look or repair the faults unless the suppplying garage has told you to do one or you have their permission can invalidate any protrection you have under the sale of goods act.
I would go in person to the garage in question calmly and take a documented letter detailing all faults found.
Request they collect the car as you believe it is dangerous to drive in its current state. eml light as yet is not an MOT failure. However it is down to you to return faulty goods for example if you purchased chicken that had gone off when you opened it from Tesco you wouldnt expect them to collect it same applies with a car. Howver if they value their reputation they should collect it.
As mentioned document everything and send a letter recorded delivery for possible evidence at a later stage.
Also get a written response from the garage confirming they will fix it and on what time scale they are allowewed resnoble time to do this we work on a max of 7 days.
regarding going to court I can not comment as never thankfully been in that position always sorted out any issues well before ever solicators letters are sent.
Issue here is wth the person that traded the car in as they probably knew about it and failed to mention it when traded in, hence why now I test drive every part exchange myself unless giving basic scrap value for it.

You bought a Renault.
Do you not have Google?!
Seriously, just reject the f*cker before it's properly f*cked.

From my post on page 1.
[Your address]
Manager/ Owner
Dealership address
Dear Sir/ Madam
Ref: [registration number of vehicle]
On [date] I purchased, and took delivery of, the above vehicle [make and model] from you. On [date] I discovered that it was not of satisfactory quality: [describe the problem].
Section 14 of the Sale of Goods Act 1979 requires dealers to supply goods of satisfactory quality. However, the vehicle is clearly unroadworthy. You are therefore in breach of contract.
I am legally entitled to reject the vehicle and to be reimbursed for its full purchase price of [£xx]. I look forward to receiving your cheque for this sum within 14 days. If you fail to reimburse me I shall have no alternative but to issue a claim against you in the county court for recovery of the money without further reference to you.
Yours sincerely
[Your name and signature]
Jonathan.

......more. For the lazy people.
Your rights if you buy second hand cars from a dealer
When you buy a second hand car from a dealer, you have a right, under the Sale of Goods Act 1979, to expect the car to:
* Be of satisfactory quality (taking into account its age and mileage)
* Meet any description given to you when you were buying it, and
* Be fit for the purpose (for example, to get you from A to B safely)
If the second hand car does not meet these requirements you have a right to claim against the dealer for breach of contract.
Your right to reject a second hand car
If there's a problem with a second hand car soon after you’ve bought it, for example, the car develops a problem you wouldn’t expect for the car’s age and mileage, or it turns out to be not what you’d been lead to expect, you may have the right to ‘reject’ the car and get your money back.
However, you have only a ‘reasonable’ time to reject a second hand car. There’s no clear definition of what a reasonable time is – you probably need to do it within three or four weeks of buying it. And if the fault is very obvious you may have less time.
If you reject a second hand car you must stop using it.
Your right to claim for the cost of repairs
If it’s too late to reject the second hand car (or you don’t want to) you can ask the dealer for a repair or replacement. If the dealer refuses, you could:
* claim from it the cost of getting the second hand car repaired elsewhere
* claim for a reduction in the purchase price, or
* return the car and get the money you paid back, less a deduction for the use you’ve had (called ‘recision’)
However, if your claim is worth more than the small claims limit where you live (£5,000 in England and Wales, £3,000 in Scotland or Northern Ireland) you may need to take advice before you act, because you may risk facing time-consuming and expensive court action.
If you get a warranty or guarantee with a second hand car, you may be able to claim on that to get any problems fixed. However, this doesn’t affect your legal rights, and you could still either reject the car, or claim against the dealer.

Well i've made progress.
I went back as i do believe they had memorised my number so weren't answering, i got to actually meet and deal with the owner who was a decent chap and actually remembered me from when i used to deliver parts there 10 years ago!
Told him i wanted the car refunded or 100% Repaired. Obviously he went for the repair option an i'm happy to let him do this as my missus genuinely likes the car, practicality wise. He was very apologetic about it and actually showed me the proof that he sold the car 6 years ago, and just took it back in px on another scenic.
So obviously i've got a signed letter stating what we discussed and basically a year long no quibble warranty (within reason!) an i hope once it comes back thats the end of it. I think the owner realised im not a piss taker, i just want what i paid for. And his sales team are cnuts (coincidently nowhere to be seen for my entire visit!)
Watch this space homies!
-
nice one Jord,
hope its all sorted
-
After yet more faults and me currently being stood in a foggy car park in castleford with a very pissed off missus, toddler, and all our luggage whilst out glorious dream car is recovered....
A refund has been agreed after a chat with the owner of the garage. Sorted
Hope thats the end of this saga
-
dam! not good :( but atleast u can find a decent car! my advice dont ask chuff
Atleast nothing bad happend to you, the mrs or the little one
-
Oh wait the AA won't recover it as there are no warning lights on
Ace, so now I abandon it, pay for recovery over 200 miles myself or risk driving it
Yeahy
-
get the garage to pay the recovery?
whjats up with it?
-
Pull the brake reservoir wire and get a red light up. Or an ABS wire but not sure if they'll accept an ABS light.......
-

Won't recover it for no warning lights? What a load of tosh. Good job I'm not with the AA then. Not every fault has a warning light.
What if a cambelt went? You don't get a warning light for that.
-
Yeah, it's stupid. my car broke down when the TPS went and that didn't throw up a light and like funk was I driving at 2mph all the way home 16 odd miles, the first guy (in a small van) came to look it over and said he couldn't find a fault and there were no warning lights on and had to call base to tell them he found nothing wrong  Base called me back, I argued with them about it really being a problem and they sent a flatbed out. coonts.
Surprised you didn't kill raise some hell Jord
-
My cambelt snapped, so no warning light, AA recovered me without any questions, didnt even want to look it over?
-
Wonder what stunt it's pulled now.
-
Yes he said as there where no lights on when he got there and he could not replicate the fault his hands were tied. So i politely said if you and the AA are happy to let me continue driving, in poor conditions with my family in the car, you sign something to say that. Then he said 'well if it was me i wouldnt drive it'
went slightly apesh!t at that point an he left when i went to get my missus.
Annoying as when he got there he said it would be recovered
Every cloud has a silver lining....the Outlaws have lent us their 06 plate Audi A4 Avant diseasel........ i can see the attraction!
