Hey mk3 lads currently own a mk4 1.8t just want to know what the mk3 vr6 are like in comparason
-
Stick with the 1.8t, better on fuel plus with a remap quicker and more torque.
-
If you want a less tuneable, slower off the mark, older car that eats petrol then get yaself a VR................
All that said, i wouldn't swap my VR for a 1.8t, I love that noise and once turbo'd (coming soon ) it will eat most 1.8t's out there
-
it's a weird one. mk4's are faster with a remap, better mpg.
but what one puts a huge smile on ya face? the mk3 vr6
there is something about them and worth a try.
-
The 1.8T is overrated in my opinion.
-
The 1.8T is overrated in my opinion.
:undecided: for noise a Vr wins hands down, bang for you buck wise a 1.8t is the better choice, remap gets you 200bhp or 220 if it is a 180 and not that expensive against the work / mods needed to get power out of a VR
-
I was driving a while ago when some cool kid thought he would show off infront of his mates in his Mk4 1.8T and try to overtake me..
He was NOT Happy!

But in fairness mine produces 187.5bhp and 182lb/ft on the rollers and given the weight to power ration it can't be much different to a MK4 1.8T that's had a stage 1 map?

From memory Dom's made 205bhp and 245lb/ft torque when first remapped, weight wise a mk4 cannot be that much heavier.
Not sure what mine is making, will try and find out soon.
-
You Are all missing the main difference between the mk3 and the mk4.
The mk3 looks awesome in so many different mod styles and the mk4 is a big ugly fat arssed thing that pretty much looks the same no matter what you do to it.

Vr6 has more grunt and you dont have to wait for the turbo to come in!
And that NOISE!!!!! Mmmmmmmmm you cannot beat the noise of the VR!
Unless its a V8 of course!
-
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNA-mfyiv20 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xNA-mfyiv20)
best sound clip of two vr's I've ever heard.
-
Vr6 has more grunt and you dont have to wait for the turbo to come in!
I don't think the 1.8t has that much lag tbh, all depends how it is mapped at the end of the day.
-
Mine does!
-
Mine does!
Mine is an AUQ with a ko3s, pulls really hard from low down and build / comes on boost really quickly.
-
I've just bought a vr6 and it does put a grin on my face everytime I drive it...even at 5.30 in the morning on the way to work!!!! But I don't know much about the Mk4 and turbo's... :undecided:
-
mine has little to no lag, I may be wrong here but from my understanding of how turbos work you should be getting very little if any lag from a k03/k03s as its only a small turbo. lag is more of an issue on bigger turbos
-
Vr6 has more grunt and you dont have to wait for the turbo to come in!
Mine has no real lag, it's all about the map
But in fairness mine produces 187.5bhp and 182lb/ft on the rollers and given the weight to power ration it can't be much different to a MK4 1.8T that's had a stage 1 map?
From memory Dom's made 205bhp and 245lb/ft torque when first remapped, weight wise a mk4 cannot be that much heavier.
It did indeed and although the power figures are fairly similar it's all about the torque! 182lb/ft vs 245lb/ft is a huge difference and a lot more noticeable than a similar hp difference would be
-
mine is classed as a 1.8T, and it is lunacy i love it and it sounds fooking awesome when u plant that foot.. would not swap it for any other engine... ill just swap out the turbo for a bigger one
mine is the S3 engine with K04, theirs zero lag and it pull and pulls and pulls..it is great fun
theirs no lag with any of the KKK turbos, be it K03, K03s or K04
Len trust me on this, a VR has nowhere near as much grunt as mine.. that is a promise
-
Mines only the 150 AUM with a stage 1 and even that eats most other hot hatches for breakfast, most fun have been a new focus st and the clio with that silly bodykit and twin exhausts. I'm not a racer but these are to my knowledge the quickest couple of cars that have tried to have a go with me and didnt get left for dust (though they did get well and truely beaten )
I agree its all about the torque, it just keeps going! A vr6 would be some kind of pre breakfast snack that probably got washed away with the mouthwash (analogies are not my strong point)
-
me and ben completely abliterated a VR6 when we were out testing mine.. like really showed him what a fast MK3 is like. was p1ss funny looking at his face as we blasted past.. was on a duel carriageway and he thought he was gonna easily leave me behind (obviously thinking mine was just a 8v as i was behind him) big mistake, he picked the wrong 8v to mess with that day
-
Yours aint a normal 1.8T Brad!
I have a remapped 1.8T in my Passat so I do know what I am talking about!
-
a pisshat weights and handles a bit worse than a mk3 or even a mk4 though
Nothing abnormal about brads engine, its just been mapped
-
The mk4 is heavier than the mk3. Brad, you can't say anything, your car is not a standard 1.8T.
And Dom, 245ft lb from just a remap??
-
Nothing abnormal about brads engine, its just been mapped
Its not the standard 1.8T, its the S3 version, a little bit of difference there
-
its still a 'normal' 1.8t engine, it just isnt from a mk4
-

Yup pretty much; remap, Forge 007p, pipercross filter & smoothed airbox:
That was on Carbon's rollers which are well known to be deadly accurate
-

That is the one thing I have noticed on mine is the extra torque, mid range is epic.
I will have to try and got a video of mine so Len can see how little lag it has, it spools up really quick.
-
its still a 'normal' 1.8t engine, it just isnt from a mk4
I think the thread started comparing the mk3 golf vr6 and mk4 golf 1.8T
Comparing a remapped S3 engine against a standard VR6 is ridiculous.
The standard 1.8T engine in the golf isn't particularly great.

That's pretty impressive.
What is the standard torque figure before remap?
I think your car would give my car some trouble
-
mine was standard when we was testing... completely killed that VR, made it look like a 1.3
Len your right, mine isn't normal 1.8t tbh
-
The standard 1.8T engine in the golf isn't particularly great.
Correct but a remap soon sorts that, I drove a std 150 before buying the vRS and the difference is night and day when you get to a 180bhp.
What is the standard torque figure before remap?
I think your car would give my car some trouble
155lbs ft as standard, I think the 180bhp is around 177lbs ft.
-
That's pretty impressive.

Wayne beat me to it! 155lb/ft standard.
What power/torque is yours running?
-
So you can gain 90 ft lbs of torque from a remap? hmmm....
Brad, yours was 225bhp before remap?
-

Mine is not a golf.
Audi A8 4.2, 300bhp and 295ft lbs torque.
Shame about the auto box
-
correct you cant compare a turbo s3 lump to a vr6 n/a,but turbo the vr and its a different story my money would be on the 6 pot all day long
-
So you can gain 90 ft lbs of torque from a remap? hmmm....
Anywhere between 235lb/ft & 245lb/ft is fairly common, mine's an AUM so has KO3s turbo as standard which helps

That's quite a lot more power & a fair amount of extra torque, although I guess the A8 is pretty heavy though?
-
but turbo the vr and its a different story my money would be on the 6 pot all day long
But that is a whole different ball game and a lot more expensive.
-

Will be able to answer this in a month or two................ maybe
-
Dom, the A8 is 1700kg, its aluminium chassis so its not as heavy as people think. The transmission holds it back.
Once it gets going, it is very very fast.
The 1.8T isn't that fast, and the vr6 isn't a proper V, real V engines have more torque.
-
and the vr6 isn't a proper V, real V engines have more torque.
It is 15 degree from memory, amazing engine when you take one apart and see the engineering involved.

Yes it is. One cylinder head with offset cylinders.
I did the headgasket on my old vr6, quite a job

have you been in either ?? well shut up then LOL
Mine isn't standard no more. and i would say the turbo Vr would have a hard time trying to beat mine.. next year see's a bigger turbo too and 350+ BHP with LSD...
the 1.8T engine is just so easy to get big power from...

1.8T is fast in a mk3 or a mk 2 tho, really they are, and the VR engine is ALOT heavier than the 1.8T lump too.. the VR needs a turbo to be able to match a 1.8T powered Mk 2 or 3
However, id say you would beat a 1.8T golf 4 un mapped if you was in a VR, Bens goes really well. feels fast than the last one i went in anyhow
Would like to see bens mk 3 VR against Doms MK4.. that would be a interesting one

Yes a 1.8T remapped in a mk3 would be fast. The 1.8T is virtually same weight as a vr when all the extra bits are added on.
All these cars would seem slow to you though now
-
Dom would defo smoke me 0-60, 3rd is just soooooo looooong in the VR tho mite just catch him up.
I went up against a Zafira VXR a few weeks ago, 1st an 2nd he was pulling away but once I was in 3rd i was getting closer to his bumper, I saw him drop into 4th an I still had plenty in 3rd

Lol yea I know what u mean. It's surreal just how good the performance on mine is compared to the old 8v lump. Tbh I like VR turbo but I just loved the S3 engine too much and had my heart set on it.
I looked into the weights after we last talked about it. I put a threa up on club Gti forum and it was found the VR lump was almost twice the weight of the 1.8t
I'm gonna be honest tho, since we did bens the VR6 engine has grown on me a lot. But I'm deffo a 1.8t guy
-
VR FTW

Yeh but ben u listen to scooter whilst you drive

There is no way that a VR weighs twice as much as a 1.8T.
I looked into this a while back, the 1.8T is reinforced and the ancillaries that go with it are heavy.
They weigh virtually the same, there is very little in it.
On another note, your 1.8T much feel like rocket compared to your old 8v

Well no I have not been in a golf with an s3 engine but the wife had a tt 225 and It was nippy but I think the 1.8 bam engine is weak and I have been in a supercharged vr that would of smoked your golf no problem so there you go you can shut up you don't like it when people talk about anything other than the 1.8t it ain't all that that's why it was dropped for the better 2.0t

We'll have to settle that when mine is healthy again
Lets be honest, any 200bhp+, sub 1300kg car isn't exactly slow (an 8v Mk3 on the other hand....)! Mine is plenty quick enough for me at the moment, and right now I haven't got the cash to spare to make it any quicker. Brad's is a complete monster and is soon to become even more brutal, Ben's VR6T will be immense as well and I hope I get a ride in it when it's done!
There is no point comparing any mapped 1.8T or VR6T to a n/a VR as it's not a fair comparison.
Can we draw a line under this thread now?
Good.

I have read on many forums etc that a 1.8t lump is about the same as a VR so you are correct.

Nope it is a good and interesting thread
-
TBH i was uninspired by the early S3 i drove recently, low milage, good nick etc., however the 4 pot engine sounded pants
-
I don't really like either now, not since i got the V8

I know what you mean, a CL500(?) V8 AMG ruined it for me, the shear power and noise of the thing!

i was tempted by getting a vauxhall monaro 5.7 v8 you can get the for 7000 now and they sound mean

A car I have always liked apart from the fuel bills.
f**k the fuel bills lol if i ever get one i would have the lpg on it 40p a litre
-
I almost wet my pants with sex wee last week when a brand new VXR8 down shifted next to me coming up to the lights. Whaaammmmm Wop Wop Wop!
-
haha i know the noise your on about but you missed the pop pop when it hits the redline lol
-
just been on vauxhall website to look at the vxr8 it is better on fuel than my vr6,i need to speak to the bank manager lol

Trust me it is not, you will struggle to get anywhere near those figures in day to day use, most manufacture's figure are overstated.

you are such a clueless goon, can't even quote correctly let alone give a valid reply
A standard S3, or TT does feel sh!t, numb and boring.. also don't feel fast.. i know this...i really do..
now you take that engine, which is not weak like you say it is you numpty, modify it and wack it into a MK3 and believe me you have a serious weapon on your hands..mine is not even fully custom mapped yet and is still only on it's K04 turbo and it matches pace with my mates R32 SC easily...
Now all this ball bags about this VR SC you have been in FFS, phaaa, id put my V5 down on that one. i know a guy who has one, he is on ED38 and he has the biggest SC on any VR6 in the UK... well one of 2 cars actually and you know what. he only has 220ibft!! even he says my car would smoke his.. you don't even know the specs on my car to even say what would smoke it and what wouldn't and TBH id not be right bothered about what is faster.. my car is very fast and lots of fun. it makes me smile every time i put the foot down and thats good enough for me..
not a fan of superchargers, too much pointless noise. Wack a turbo on a VR and it will be very similar to mine, but use a load more fuel.. and will never be as easy to get even more power from than what the S3 lump will be.. Have you not seen some of the BIG turbo kits you can get for this very highly tuneable engine? why do you think everyone wants to use the AMK / BAM engines ?? ?
lastly the reason they replaced the engine with the 2.0 FSI was mainly about emissions..
Regarding weight of the engines. A VR engine is heavier than the 1.8T, a guy on Vortex weighed one, the VR block minus head weigh in a 145KG, the 1.8T is between 80kg - 100kg with head
-

haha im not assed anyway mate cos i would not spend &&&'s converting a mk3,putting all that power in the worst handling fwd car there is,i would rather just buy something like a monaro with more power for less than you spent on the conversion, and get my money back on it no probs you will lose &&&'s on it,and the supercharged vr had 320 bhp by some company called storm or summet, anyway listen mate yours would beat mine no probs and im sure the 1.8t is good when tuned i only went in a standard 225
-
my mates was originally rolling roaded at storm too
their RR figures are errrmmmm not very accurate
anyhow, a monaro would loose LOADS of money are you crazy ?? and they just look sh!t plus use so much fuel too, i could put the bigger turbo on mine for what the fuel costs are and smoke it no problem making whoever is driving it look a right goon.. they are about as big a bungalow.... let the australians keep them i say...
i never built mine to make money or hold value but i believe it will hold money quite well.. better long term than a Monaro anyhow..Plus the way i saw it was, either buy a brand new Focus RS or S3, both 30k cars.. spend loads on deposit and finance only to loose thousands.. where as my conversion cost me 5k, we did it ourself, the car will never be sold. its all paid for, it has oldskool looks with newskool performance.. winner in my eyes.. not everyones but mine and to me thats what counts
its also a very good advert for what me and ben can do, and that alone came make us £££££££ back....
And believe me, its not the worst handling FWD car ever. mine is well sorted and iv had a lot of cars , try a nova with a redtop for handling or a mk3 escort.. list goes on and on.. MK3's are really pretty decent once properly sorted
-
As referance to the Monaro, a mate of mine/my dads had a Holden HSV (which is the same car) and he had one of the only two in the country as the time (was a while ago now). Was quick but he averaged 8MPG daily.

monaro's losing money your crazy mate lol they well hold there value, and i suppose its your opinion that they are sh!t but i think most people on here would disagree, and its a good talent you both have it could make you alot of cash only if your cheap enough
-
I think its obvious to see I'm not a big fan of big cars like this (really I'm not, never liked the Lotus Carlton either)
its each to their own as you say, would be a boring world if we all liked the same eh
-
very true, hows this for a laugh i got smoked of a saxo vts today but i did f**k up my gear change, lol for a 1.6 there quick imagine one of them with a turbo on

I have a Swift GTI twin Cam 16v, forged crank and pistons, HKS cams, Superchips custom mapping etc etc, 154BHP and revs to 9k. all this from a 1.3.. absolutely insane car. beat so much stuff you would not believe.. smoked my mates MK2 Golf GTI which had a 2.9VR6 in it.. i got instant respect after that (they used to laugh at the 1.3 part hahaha..
this is what they can do with a Turbo

Hmm fair point.
This wasn't a Vaxhaull, was a Monaro. No idea if that or import costs make a difference....

Regarding weight of the engines. A VR engine is heavier than the 1.8T, a guy on Vortex weighed one, the VR block minus head weigh in a 145KG, the 1.8T is between 80kg - 100kg with head
Have you got a link for that Brad?
When i looked into, the 1.8T was lighter by about 30kg. The reason being, the bottom end is good for something silly like 400bhp, so the block, pistons, rods etc are strengthened considerably. This adds alot of weight over most NA blocks. Also the turbo and intercooler and other little bits add extra weight the vr doesn't, its actual surprising how much extra weight the extra bits add on.
The vr is a very compact engine, single head 15 degrees with offset pistons, its not actually as big or heavy as people think.
I can't remember the actual weights, i will see if i can find the links, but they are close, that is complete engine v engine plus any extra bits.
-
I don't really like either now, not since i got the V8
I know what you mean, a CL500(?) V8 AMG ruined it for me, the shear power and noise of the thing!
theres quiet few of these going round birms. i was in my car waiting at the traffic and saw a dog and i heard a bark and i go best to close your windows cuz as that dogs barking he started to laugh and said that wasnt the dog look behind, so i did AMG farking barking away, just by revving that beast i jizzed away
p.s only way to settle the weight issue is to take both engines out and weigh em
-
well me and ben have fitted both the S3 engine into my MK3, and a VR6 in to his MK3.. trust me the VR engine is heavier
links are on the web someplace, ill try find them when im home.. i did ask the question on ClubGTI as i said earlier...

Brad how do you put the power down in your car?
My Passat has got 180bhp and runs on 225wide tyres and I can spin the wheels in 3rd if its a bit moist!
Dry weather and good grip I can spin the wheels in second real easy!
So in short I have less hp in a bigger/heavier car with wider tyres.
How do you manage?
-
Agree with what Len said, my old vr6 was remapped and it struggled with grip in 1st and 2nd, especially in the wet, and that is no where near the power you are running Brad.
Also as you said you fitted 1.8T and VR engines, but i presumed you used a hoist and didn't lift them in by hand?
The VR IS the heavier engine, just pointing out that the turbo, intercooler and addition piping must weigh at least 20kg, when the weights between the two engines are considered, this must be included.
The 1.8T is heavy for a 4 cylinder, and the 6 cylinder isn't actually as big as people think, its all down to angles
-
When i went out in Alex's (LazyLunatic) in Portsmouth when it was wet that kept to the road very well and put the power down much better then my Vr. His had just come of the Rollers producing 230bhp too!
-
I also regularly light up the traction control light on a damp road in third
-
Quite happy poodling about on my Micra knowing that I'm not waiting for my clutch to give way.

It takes the power really really well actually, it has surprised me a lot.. i was told the MK3 (out of the MK 1,2 and 3) is much better for the high output engines for this reason and also high speed areo dynamics.. So to many peoples hate, the MK3 actually is a good choice for what I'm running... i could easily spin it in 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th.. its just knowing how to handle it... i wish i could show you all just how brutal it is..(i really don't know how anyone would want any more power - I'm only fitting the big turbo etc because this car is used as a advert for myself and ben)
Iv almost murdered my rubber tho (Yokohama) and in the wet it can be a real handful getting the power down...a bit too much if I'm honest and its times like this i think 4WD would be a god send .. I'm just telling it as it is...
My car is crying out for LSD, and before i fit the big turbo its getting one and uprated brakes becaus the high speed braking from 150MPH resulted in my pads smoking like mad
anymore power through mine it WILL be a big struggle, their is sooo much torque and it comes in low down and holds on right through the rev range, Carbon have not even finished with it yet so theirs much more to come.. i do love it, puts a massive grin on my face every time i drive it
-
I can wheel spin in 3rd to, you just need a bit of finese  I used to plant my foot quite a lot when I first did the conversion and wonder why I wasn't going anywhere, but once your used to it its fine, just don't drive like a dick
-
Yeah well my 8v spins in....................second......................in the pissing rain...................... :embarassed:
-
mate. i don't care what anybody says, the 8v isn't as bad as folk make out, mine was pretty nippy for what it was.. i still wanna see someone on here Turbo one
-
I would look into turboing my 8v as a project but I can't see the point when I can just fit a 16V instead.
4wd is possible if ya fancy swapping floorplans. :P

Well mine may be for sale as early as next week if the missus gets her wish. If not then early spring for sure. If I cant sell it, its being broken unfortunately. Mechanically its absolutely solid, exterior lets it down a little but nothing someone with a small amount of cash or skills could'nt sort in a very short space of time. Its not a bad lump tbh, since the flywheel went in its great in 3rd between 3 and 5 1/2 thousand rpm/ I've put alot of time into this and its been a great learning curve, as I've never done anything with cars before I got this almost exactly a year ago.
Would love to see a 2.0 8v T. Would be interesting to see what the performance and output would be, but I couldnt justify spending that amount of money on it.

Both are awsome, but no figures to give us a insight into what their producing though.
-
blue one looks really slow :embarrassed:
-
I thought that but it's not easy to judge from video. :undecided:
-
blue ones a 1.8?

It is a good engine but little or no point in a turbo conversion, factor in what it would cost against a 1.8t swap plus it would make nowhere near the same power, 150bhp tops :undecided:
-
Yea that is true for sure, I'd still like to see one done tho
-
Ok, guys you're kind of whetting my appetite now
I've got a nice more door 16v that's done 75k, how much ££££ for a conversion to a 1.8T and how long to do the work etc?
Also - Brad what suspension is on your car?
-
A couple years ago there used to be a kit on www.turbobygarrett.com not sure if you could still get them second hand though?
I'm sure there was one in Golf+/PVW a couple years back. Was producing less BHP then a Standard VR6 but was killing things in tourque something crazy like 300lb/ft I'll see if i can dig it out :)
-

mine is running JamexCoilovers at the moment, they are wound down around 100mm
To do a 1.8T conversion price wise depends what engine and how far you want to go.. typical prices would start around 2.5k.. my engine conversion build cost was around the 5k mark (with all work been done by myself and Ben) but my engine alone took up half that cost
we are currently converting a MK2 to 20VT, i got a AGU 1.8T with a G/box etc for 350 quid

2.5k phew that's a fair amount to pay, car only cost me £1250  Better start saving!
Jamex coilovers, are they budget ones? What'd they ride like?
-
they cost me around £250 4 years ago. iv been very impressed with them mate, its a firm ride but i don't mind that. Iv done a lot of miles on these and can't say a bad word about them
-

Easier option is to buy a Octavia vRS for around £1500, drive it around for a short while and make sure all is ok, strip it for parts and what you don't need can be sold on to recoup some funds :afro:
-
or a full mk4 for even less.. you also need parts from a mk3 16 v, we bought one of these both times we have done conversions
