I'm not even going to bother as it's 1.5Mb/s at best.
I've just fired off a email to Sky to get them to manually profile my line to get a better speed. Otherwise, I'm looking at FTTC supplier, although digital region is expensive and not sure how good it really is.
This made me larf

ive been running one for about 2 mins now, and it hasent even connected to get the download speed. that shows how good my internet is...

on the belkin router
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1554881958.png)
straight out of the modem
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1554890415.png)
i was convinced the belkin router was slowing me down, but it looks like it makes no difference (granted xbox is off and downstairs laptop is off)
i will try again out of peak hours to see if it improves, i cant remember if im supposed to be on 10 or 20meg, im happy with my results
-
mine's pretty good bearing in mind it's wireless
-
good for talk talk. my old mans on talk talk wireless and i find it shocking. no idea what is he paying or receiving.
-
I've binned off the talktalk software on my router and gone backwards, solved loads of problems
The exchange is probably a 5min walk from my house though lol
-
this is the highest i have ever seen it, normally closer to 2 lol although haven't checked it for a while

What did you do? I'm with talktalk and have the router they provided, a D-Link DSL2640R.
Yesterday we renewed a 12 month contract with them though, they're sending out a new "N" wireless router and they slashed £10 off the monthly bill with the same boosts we already had
-
I wouldn't recommend doing it while the router is in warranty as changing the software will void it...
but all I did was find the software on the net (d-link website mainly) for the router and try each one out.

t.b.h I don't 100% trust these tests as my local server (Hull 20 miles) is much slower than one far far away! Oh and this is wireless

I am happy with those, seeing as I am 2 and bit miles from the exchange, so my speed can never be to quick
-
Wireless:
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1555005351.png) (http://www.speedtest.net)
-
Meh, I sync at 8Mb and my max downloads from other sources indicate a max speed of 7.5Mb on a good day, when the wind blows in the right direction and the planets are aligned correctly and a crow is circling above.
-
I miss my 16mbps connection, wish I'd not had to move
-
(http://www.speedtest.net/result/1555251629.png)
Wire connection, but there's a wireless laptop streaming a movie downstairs so not too bad.
We will see what happens with the new router from talk talk, maybe a small increase as the connection is rather up to 24mb and I'm only about half a mile from the exchange.
-

running two machines atm, was pinging 30 ish over the weekend suposed to be upto 50

Gotta say internet gaming is great with talktalk. I've heard so many bad things about them but I can't really complain over the last 3 years we've been with them. Connection is always great, not much difference in internet speed between peak and off peak hours and my ping online gaming is always among the lowest on the servers.
-
Same here mate. You hear loads of horror stories but they have been spot on for me so far
-
Actually I do have 1 complaint. Customer service is horrid. All foreign (mostly indian), and hard to understand. I rather speak to an indian person called Amir, Chand, Khan or Kumar than an indian person called "Nathan" or "John" or "Hugh".
-
ISP's have customer service? Do you ring them for a chat about the weather or sommat? :undecided:
Never had to call PlusNet CS  :smug:
I say never but 1st was a problem with the initial set up of my line on their side, 2nd I thought I had a problem with the line, turned out to be dodgy network cabling. Not bad for being with them since 2003ish
-
I'll be leaving o2 as soon as my broadband contract is up. They were great in the first year, but when I renewed they throttled my connection making it practically useless for streaming. Then to top it all off they finally realised I've not been an o2 mobile customer for a very long time, so are putting my monthly bill up
-
pretty shocked at how low that is... with 02 broadband atm. will now be changing! Nearest server is manchester... foooking smelly mancs

Ive got sky, its ok, not had any issues with it unlike when I wa with talktalk, I would lose the connection for about 2 or 3 times a month for at lease 3 days at a time. I will try and post my results later as i'm at work atm.

hmmm mine has now dropped to under 1mb... I wonder if my recent downloading has any bearing on that :lipsrsealed:
-
My internet was crawling earlier, but I put it down to mum using laptop and BF3 release night so downloading a 472mb patch off origin took about an hour.

We're not a volume hosting seller ;) We provide specialised hosting - and as a result, we stopped taking online orders directly - so that we can spec up a solution to people's exact requirements.

Back at home and a decent internet connection!

I wish Virgin would hurry up and get their arse over here

Doubt that would happen now, Virgin laid cables in my town over 10 years ago and they've never been activated because it could give virgin a monopoly

Wow..i knew it was slow but as im not amazingly tech savvy, tell me how sh!te this is so i can get sky to sort it or cancel it

That's pretty poop indeed! Do an average over different times in the day in off peak it should be quicker than on peak.

Go register on http://forums.thinkbroadband.com/ - and have a poke around in the Sky forums. The guys on there REALLY know their stuff and will help you isolate the issue.
Slow ADSL can be down to a bunch of different things, a lot of which, are well in your own control.

Via a server NASA left on the moon in the '60s looking at that ping...
-
nope the whole of shetland is having problems with slow broadband and bt dont want to admit an issue,
-
WTF! Your ping is insane though!
Can you do the following..
Hold Windows key and press R
Type cmd into the box and press Enter
This should bring up a Command Prompt window. Inside the window, type: tracert www.google.com
then press enter
Copy and paste (or screenshot) the results here. Then we can see where the massive latency starts :)

I'm actually quite impressed. My PC is so far from the router that this is much faster than my ADSL connection!

I am yet to get broadband activated at my new flat but this is my speed over 3G on my mobile.

There's no way you get that speed over 3G!
-
There's no way you get that speed over 3G!
HSPA+ gets up to 21Mb/s - real world usage you would hardly get that sort of speed because their networks are so clogged up.
Technically it's 3.5G, though in America some mobile networks started calling it 4G.
-
There's no way you get that speed over 3G!
Oh but I do Nigel. I couldn't believe it myself either. I went with 3 because I wanted an unlimited data plan so thought is try them out, I still run my Vodafone sim and results from Vodafone are around 2mb download and 0.2mb upload.
Oh and if you look at my read out, the network even says "cellular".
-
That's utterly insane, I only get 6mbps at home via my phone line
40mbps soon though

not bad for bt its normally in the 40s though so can see my router being re-set again

Looks to me like your on adsl 1 and pretty close to your local exchange, the fastest you will get on adsl 1 is 7.5mbps down and 0.448 upload,if you contact your service provider and ask to go on adsl 2, 21cn your speeds will more than double.

Looks to me like your on adsl 1 and pretty close to your local exchange, the fastest you will get on adsl 1 is 7.5mbps down and 0.448 upload,if you contact your service provider and ask to go on adsl 2, 21cn your speeds will more than double.
thank you very much but whaaaaaaaaaat?!?
just so i can at least pretend what im talking about, what is adsl 1? and what is adsl 2 that im asking to be put on? will it be free?
-
This on my desktop using the wifi, unfortunately i can't hardwire it due to the location but i've tried it when it was first installed and i basically had double...what thick cvnt decided to put my master phone point is in the hall way?!?

Asymmetric digital subscriber line basically means its faster in one direction, hence download of 8mbs and upload of 0.48,ask your service provider if your exchange has been upgraded to 21cn which means they have put the new ADSL 2 equipment in the exchange which is capable of upto 24Mbps download and 1Mbps upload. It should not cost anymore but they will probably want you to,sign a new contract.

now on talk talk, ok fair enough its like £3.50 a month or something but this is my result:

Just put in my order for fibre optic, being installed 27th November
You lucky f***er! I'm also moving into a new build in the next few weeks and can't get fibre yet, even though the exchange supports it!!
-
Yeah well, BT have cancelled the appointment and have given no confirmed date as to when I'll get a line installed.
-
Bugger
They wanted plot number from me, meaning they have no clue yet  oh well, where I'm moving I think we get HSPA+ which will do until we get proper interwebs installed.
-
What annoys me is that the house already had a line fitted when the house was built, it's purely just a matter of switching it on and fitting a fibre optic faceplate in the lounge. Yet BT have this stupid notion they need to survey the area first. Having spoken to Sky they say the issue is that no one at BT talks to each other. One department just places the blame with another.
-
There are 3 separate companies to BT. Retail, wholesale and OpenReach - which is why they don't appear to speak to each other. PITA, but it was the "fair" thing to do, to stop BT's monopolization of the internetz.
-
Had some stuff to do at the new place and saw a BT Openreach dude who said Fibre has been laid already

B.T is a very large company and sky should not really be saying things like that :lipsrsealed:,it depends if your local exchange and more importantly the network near you has been upgraded to fibre. There are two types of fibre broadband, fibre to premises and fibre to cab,the first is when the fibre is laid from the exchange all the way into your house and the second is when the fibre has been run from the exchange to a new cabinet next to the orginal copper network cabinet,in this new cabinet is the DSLAM (puts broadband on your line) the broadband is then connected from the new cabinet to the orginal copper cabinet and is fed down the orginal copper network to your house.
Fibre to cabinet (fttc) is a lot more straight forward in terms of installation than fibre to premises (fttp). some places are getting FTTC some are getting FTTP some are getting neither in the near future.
Did they give you a reason for cancelling your appointment ? openreach dont normally just cancel appointments is there even fibre in your area ?did your service provider even make a appointment ?
A survey is normally carried out on complex jobs where there is no line plant, not on new build houses, 99.9% of install tasks dont get surveyed because the engineer can sort out most problems on the day as long as there is line plant at the location for the engineer to connect to.If your house is a new build connected to a u.g (underground) network is should be fairly straightforward.
-
I had an appointment for 27th November but BT cancelled it, no proper reason given. The area has FTTC signed off and ready to go. Best excuse I've had so far is a survey needing to be done, but they're arguing over which part of OpenRearch are suposed to be doing it.
Apparently my case has been escalated, but due to any bad experiences with BT in the past I'm not holding my breath.

You dont need a survey if its a new estate and the line plane was put in by the builders its all done by the postcode, the computer will match your postcode to the local line plant.

On a 3G wireless dongle on an air force base full of sorts of electronic and massive ATC tower outside my window...It manages for COD online and forums so I'm happy

Proof BT don't know what they're doing then. All they need to do is come and switch the line on and install a new fibre faceplate to the box in the lounge. This simple taste seems to illude them though. I'v even paid £52 for the privilege of no one getting off their ass to fix the problem.

you are a customer of your service provider ,they should be dealing with appointments, who contacted you to tell you it had been cancelled if ever made. :undecided:

You'll probably find it's Sky's fault for not booking it with BT OpenReach and their standard reply is "BT's fault, not ours!!!"
-
I had to ring up to find out, no one called me. Sky made the appointment through their BT system, and BT responded to say the appointment was cancelled.
Sky have rung BT three times now and keep getting fobbed off with the same responses.

Your service provider should have rang you to tell you it had been cancelled if ever made, openreach are VERY busy at the moment but even so they rarely cancel a appointment, so if the appointment was never made you will have to wait for some time.I have lost count of the times i have turned up at a end users address to install or fault their line to find no one home and when you manage to contact them they all ways say "no one told me i had a appointment" its your service provider who should keep you upto date

Got a text from Sky today apologising that I won't be getting broadband this afternoon, they'll update me tomorrow.
Not holding my breath for some reason

What a day. A few hours after Sky texting to say my appointment is going ahead I get a phone call from Openreach to say that they're on their way! Then I get a text from Sky 3 minutes later saying that an engineer is coming this afternoon!
He didn't now anything about having ordered Fibre, so it's another call to Sky tomorrow when I have time. Better than nothing though!!

BT are back again on Wednesday, I believe to install my Fibre

might as well be useing carrier pigions here  infact its quite possible they would be faster
-
Well that's a tad f**ked up. BT say I can get FTTP @ 160Mb, yet other ISP's (including those owned by BT ,*cough* PlusNet*cough*) say I can't get fibre at all!!!!

good old virgin, just had my speed doubled for free
-
My phone gets better speed than sky
-
Just called BT to cancel my old phone line, they didn't want to lose me so done the 160Mb FTTP service for £26 per month instead of £35 p/m, first 3 months free and the usual line rental charge, "unlimited" downloads etc
Result
Just got to wait over a month for the install on 16th Jan and put up with shoddy Edge speeds with a chance of 3G/HSPA until then

Jay, I've hard BT have some awful traffic management, did they mention anything about that? It'll be interesting to see what it's like
-
They didn't mention anything about it, though on their website when I was looking they say they'll prioritise other traffic over P2P and other types of data transfers. Will let you know if I run into any problems.

I'm with talktalk and have been for a number of years. I called yesterday about increases to the bill and was told that the contract was renewed for another 12 months...My mum, which the account is under her name knew nothing about this, so just waiting for her to come back from Malta so we can cancel this contract renewal talktalk thought they'd do without our permission and then discuss fibre optic. Hopefully because of this cock up they've done we can get a good deal on the fibre optic, but not sure whether to go for the medium or the large option...

It tends to go with the server giving the best ping
-
First part of the install completed today, now got to wait till 17th for the second half of the install... can't wait to get broadband in! 3G is so sketchy in our new place that it ranges from GPRS to Edge, 3G, HSPA an HSPA+ and will alternate quicker than a whores drawers going up/down  Though it prefers Edge, but it's so fecking slow!!!

What's the first stage, installing a line?

First part is blowing the fibre and installing a white box in my under stairs cupboard with phone socket. Guess the second half is to then connect it at the BT floor box on the street to the exchange. The equipment (BT Home Hub 3 Black, BT Infinity Home Hub 3.0 Welcome Pack) is due to arrive next Thursday and the final part of the install on Monday 17th. Hopefully I can keep the equipment in the cupboard out of sight and kids reach. Glad I've got free reign of the internet at work so I can get my daily fix of mind numbing crap
-
Weird! They came and installed the white modem and upgraded the line all in one go on Wednesday, so can't complain too much.
First impressions of the Fibre is excellent. Sky router, rubbish. Think I might upgrade to a quality Netgear one with dual channels for better Wi-Fi signal.
-
finaly got BBC installed today.up to 8mbps now. super happy
-
:afro:
-
It works a little different with FTTP as they've got to blow the fibre to your house, whereas FTTC they use your existing copper from your house to the cabinet. Only a week left!
-
Just signed up for BT, estimate of 2.5mb/s.
I miss my Virgin 50mb :(

not bad via the laptop with other devices streaming / facebooking etc doubt the servers can dish out over 100Mbps, closest I get at work is in the 80-90Mbps range and we have a 100Mb burstable to 1Gb fibre line.

My company is a provider on Speedtest and the minimum requirement is only a 100Mb connection :)
The bandwidth costs alone just for participating are massive. It consumes around 400GB of bandwidth per week, and 95th %ile billing goes out the window with speedtests due to the very nature. You end up paying for 100Mb/100Mb (~£600 per month) just for threads like this :(
There isn't a chance we'd put it on a 1Gb bearer ...

No pics, no idea how to put them up with this phone!
My company Nokia Lumia 520 on Vodafone mobile internet has:
115ms Ping
2.34mb/s download
0.92mb/s upload
works wired only internet:
11ms ping
6.1mb/s download
4.36mb/s upload
home has around the same speeds as at work, but my company has 100s of restrictions in place and my phone is probably 5x faster...
My work is in the city, i live in a little village.
