Title: Trog's Mk3 8v - Parts from America!
Post by: trog_nfs on 25 March 2011, 16:19
Hi Chaps,

Joined the forum just after Christmas last year when I bought my new car, and have finally got my act together to put a thread together.

Little bit of history:

I began my golf obsession with my first car, a 1994 1.4 Mk3 Golf "Match". It was my first forray into dubs and and the modifying scene in general. I made lots of mistakes with that car, but learnt from them all, plus it helped me develop a few basic mechanical skills.
I've put a picture up of her for you guys tojudge ridicule look at
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Untitled.jpg)

Unfortuneately, the first engine blew its headgasket, and when the head was off, we noticed it was knackered!
Then a year later, the oil pump gave up the ghost in the replacement engine.
Think you can guess the outcome of that...

Anyway, back to the present....

I scraped together the very limited funds I could get, and bought a 1997 8v GTI.
This is what she looked like in the advert.

Was clean, all electrics worked, and had electric everything which quite frankly was a novelty I am yet to tire of.

However, sods law kicked in, and I have spend the last few months repairing the stupid thing.
It needed:
Front and side coolant flanges
Expansion tank
Thermostat
Radiator
Both drive belts
Service
Cambelt - next on my list
Had two slow punctures and needed tyres

Having bankrupted myself buying the car in the first place, these things made me a bit annoyed.

Any road, she's now running properly, and thanks to some gorgeous weather today, I cracked on with the parts I had lying around from my old car to tidy her up.

The last owner had removed the front fogs and replaced them with battered reflectors, so I shoved on the crystal set my old car had. I also had a go at doing Anniversary-esque pinstriping in blue, and I'm quite pleased with the results.

Next was the obligatory Eurowagens splitter
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0195.jpg)

I had some model paint lying around, so I joey'd the headlights
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0192.jpg)

Very pleased with the results
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0201.jpg)

To sort the punctures problems, I found some VR6 BBS's on Fleabay with decent tyres left on them, and as advantage, they had been refurbed black (I have always wanted black multispokes)

Few little bits to brighten up the interior:

Overall, I'm happy with the results, but there's always more work to do
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0202.jpg)

Next time:
Debadged FK grill - waiting for paint
New rear bumper - what ever numpty had the car before clearly had issues:
Looks like a cutout was made for a tow-ball in the rear bumper, and glued back badly. The worse part is that it had been painted 3 times on the black parts. Top layer is flaky black paint, underneath all that is blue paint?? And under that is the original black textured plastic, ruined.
I have a bumper, but it needs painted (couldn't find a decent fjord blue one anywhere)

I've also drilled the airbox and run a cold air feed from the bumper grill, but forgot to get a pic of that one.

My next big purchase will be a way of lowering it.

I'm undecided so far, as my old car had cheap coilovers on it, and it looked really good low, but the ride got worse and worse, untill they had been on two years and were harder than a diamond in an ice storm!

As its my daily, probs end up with eibachs and boge shockers if I can get the funds together

Just a small update.

Just about to move house, so things with the golf have moved slowly, but I have an ever expanding pile of parts in my room.
These include:

Right Click remote central locking kit
Tinted side repeaters
Steering column protective boot
Rear bumper
FK Grill
Some bits from lazylunatic
Rocker cover gasket

On order:
BMW Wiper arm and cover - win!

Thanks for looking

Decided to take advantage of the lovely weather this weekend, dug around in the boxes upon boxes lying in the garage and found my tool kit.

My first task was to remove the redundant alarm that had been deactivated some time ago. I knew it had one as there was a sigma siren under the bonnet and a white plug behind headlight switch.

Looking at the date on it, looks like it might have been a dealer fit, as to be fair, it was done very well, and was dated 1997, which is when my car was first registered.

So I started ripping out wires, and before you know it, my car looked like this
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0209-1.jpg)

My car had a one touch immobiliser put in it a few years ago, and it must have been done by a chimp!
The alarms brain had been removed, but all the wiring was still there and the new immobiliser had been bodged into it. Also, all the wires for the immob are the same colour, which was great fun!
On my voyage into the depths of the car, I also found an old 90s handsfree kit, which had also been removed, but all the wiring was still present. Why can't people finish a job properly?

So much swearing and scuffed knuckles later:

And the good news is the immob still works!

Spent today putting in the rclick remote central locking kit, which is working to unlock and lock the car, but doesn't work with total closure? Strange.

I did get round to fitting my BMW rear wiper. Removing the wiper altogether isn't an option to me, do too many motorway miles in all weathers.
Also painted my rear badge black, and lost the GolfGTI badge from the back. LL is knocking my something up to go in its place, so watch this space.

I've got some pressed "legal" plates on their way, and some plate surrounds too.

Cheers

Hey guys

Well I have succeeded where rclick failed before.
I managed to get total closure to work with the keyless entry kit.

I pulled the car apart again to see how the total closure works, so got to the back of the lock in the drivers door.

Locking the car:
Turning the key sends a +12v pulse down the grey wire to lock the car, and holding the key to close the windows maintains a +12v pulse for as long as the key is held.

Unlocking the car is the same, but operates down the green wire.

The rclick module only sends a +12v pulse to lock and unlock the car, and doesn't hold no matter what you do with the fob.
It does have a windows rising output, which becomes an earth when activated for around 30s.

Heres how you sort it.

Get a standard automotive relay
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0218.jpg)

This is how you need to connect it up

connect 30 to 12v permanent live
connect 87 to the lock wire on harness (connected to grey)
connect 85 to 12v live
connect 86 to the green wire on harness

bobs your uncle, fanny's your aunt, this should work for you.
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/th_Video0004.jpg) (http://s1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/?action=view&current=Video0004.mp4)

Now thats working, took the cam cover off, gave it a good scrub with a wire brush, and coated it in enamel heat proof paint. I'l post a pic of it when its dry and fitted to the car.

Pressed plates arrived today.

Cheers

Did the steering rack protective boot today....

Possibly the worst job I have ever had to do!!!!!!

So fiddly and dirty, its ridiculus!

And to top that, the paint I used on the cam cover reacted, so had to strip it back again, and tried again with hammerite.

Just a quick pic update

Freshly painted rocker cover:

New Steering Rack Boot.

Got to get a new rubber gasket for the pressure valve on top of the cover, had gone brittle and snapped when I tried to take it off.
New ones on order from VW, and instant gasket is holding the cover together untill then. Not ideal, but because of the bank hols, couldn't get one sooner.

Just got the car back from having the cambelt changed. My eyes are still watering, and I can't sit down yet

Had the tracking sorted as well, so the steering wheel is straight again after I had the column out to change the boot.

Only cosmetic bit today was my door card clips came, so I could clip the door cards back on properly. Scraped all the $hit out of the bottom of the doors too, broken clips etc.

At some point in the cars life, the owner has had kids, cos there was loads of marbles and plastic toys underneath the carpet. Might explain the rattle!

Time for a rant.

You think you find a garage you can trust, and it turns out not!

The car went in for cambelt and tracking. Where I'd had column out, wheel wasn't straight. They said it was unlikely tracking would be done as it was a saturday and very busy.

Picked car up later that day. Told tracking had been done, as was very quiet. They were also closing early as a result.
Got it home to check their work, and the intake pipe hadn't been connected. Thought little of it, and put it back on myself.

First time driven today - steering wheel isn't straight.

Wasn't happy, so rang garage to complain, and got excuses after excuses.

Excuse No 1. We were very busy.
Excuse No 2. Main mechanic wasn't there.
Excuse No 3. Bolts were seized and had to be torched to get moving.

These 3 went round in a circle, but how would the main mech know if they were busy if he wasn't there   Also, the receptionist gave the game away when I picked the car up as she said they wasn't busy. Plus all the mech were just hanging about.

I had said I didn't mind if the tracking wasn't done there and then. But as they had done the job, would have thought it would been done properly. Esp as bill came to much more than I was expecting.

Finally got them to agree to fix it, had to take a morning off work on Thurs so they can do it as won't do it at weekend.

Calmed down a bit. Drove home from work which is about 40 miles. Sat in traffic, I could here a loud whining. Couldn't work out what. Hear it at idle, low revs, then engine noise wiped it out.

Got home, and car sounds like its supercharged its that loud. Had a look, as it hadn't made the noise before. Both serpentine and pas belts are new, and seem ok tension wise, although they would have been off to change cambelt.

Bit of googling, and what would you know was the top result?

Incorrectly tensioned cambelt

I know my car isn't some expensive exotica, but a little care would have been nice. Wouldn't have been so annoyed if they had just stuck up their hands to say they'd made a mistake.

Post by: trog_nfs on 16 May 2011, 23:10
The tensioner on the cambelt scared me to be honest. I've swapped engines and stuff before on my old car, and thought nowt of it, but reading about how much of a fatherless son the later tensioner can be made me want to get a garage to do it.

And the lack of a 4 wheel laser alignment rig made a garage trip necessary

Having recently fitted a late type tensioner i can honestly say It was a lot easier to fit and set up with the correct pronged tool than id ever envisaged.

Post by: trog_nfs on 19 May 2011, 22:53
Well the car went back into the garage today.

Apparently to sort the tracking, it needed two track rod ends and a mount. Hmm, funny how it needs them now. Any way, they replaced them for free, so bonus.

The cambelt is correctly tensioned, they tested it with gauge. Hopefully noise will go away with time.

And they sorted the weird whistling/buzzing noise under load as well. The intake pipe had worn thin at the union with the throttle body, so it slipped off even with the hose clip in place. Loads of tape and a jubilee clip later, its not coming off in a hurry.

Took them all day to do this, dropped it off at 8:30 and didn't get it back to 18:00. Think I got my moneys worth there.

Then had a mad dash to harpenden to top up the fluids in the HPLC which I supposed to do in the afternoon. (Garage had originally said it would be done by 13:00). Only just made it!

Just like to say tierod on ebay is an absolute legend.

I snapped the end off my rigid breather pipe on my car. VW wanted £45 odd quid for it, and couldn't get it for several days.

Tierod had it for half the price and had it with me next day! Sent 1st class recorded no extra charge. Fan-dabby-dosie!

Just as well, as when I took it off, it snapped into 5 seperate pieces! Think it might have been knackered....

Couldn't agree more, Spencer and the lads (Tierod69) have bailed me out of loads of potentially expensive VW related predicaments over the years.

Cant agree with you more regarding Tierod,i think between him and chubnut they are the best people for vw spares on ebay!
Im currently putting an order in for some trim clips etc.

Your doing a good job though mate, keep it up :)

Hey chaps,

I wonder if I can get some opinions:

Should I change the number plate bulbs to white leds? I'm having to replace the light housing anyway as it split, and wondered if I should do the leds at the same time.

Also, I currently run white leds in my sidelights, and normal 501 bulbs in my indicators, should I swap those to white leds too? Didn't like the orange ones, was a bit multi coloured as I have bright yellow fogs.

Finally, I going to take my clocks apart and paint my needles with blue UV paint. I've got standard black clocks (which i quite like to be fair). I can use two different paints, both which will glow under blue under UV light. One is blue in colour, the other is white until under UV.

What are your thoughts?

Also, the passenger seat rattles when no-one is in it. I've had it apart and tightened all the bolts up and fixed the little tray thats attached to it, but it still rattles.

The only thing I can think of is the little runner clips are knackered and thus need replacing. Best place to get them?

I'm running LED's in my side lights and I like them, they'd also look good as number plate lights :afro:

With regards to your clocks, are you soldering in UV led's?
Title: Re: Trog's Mk3 8v
Post by: trog_nfs on 25 May 2011, 22:35
Yeah, going to solder in some UV LEDs.

Doing it slightly differently to everyone else though. I'm leaving the green lights in, so I'm kinda hoping for a back lit needles effect without sourcing new needles etc. So with luck the needles will glow nice and blue under the light.

My old car had plasma dials and blue leds in all the switch gear, looked  but was a bit bright and a bit hit and miss with some of the light intensity etc.

I took the plunge with some paint, some special home-brew stuff off the bay thats blue all the time, but bright blue under UV, supposed to be brighter than acrylic so we shall see.

Decided to keep the front lights as they are - white in OE place, normal in indicators, and just got to find some nice bright ones for the number plate.

Title: Re: Trog's Mk3 8v
Post by: trog_nfs on 26 May 2011, 13:29
I've been looking through some of the different paints available from the person off ebay I bought the UV paint, and found this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/PREMIUM-Glow-Dark-Paint-30ml-Choose-colour-/150554147059?pt=UK_DIY_Material_Paint_Varnish_MJ&var=&hash=item68c73491a9

Got the old cogs whirring. It's white during the day apparently, then glows whichever colour you chose in the dark.

If I painted the backplate part of the rear badge with this paint, do you reckon it would look  or . So the badge would remain black, but the back would be white in the day, and then whichever colour at night.

Opinions?

I had a rethink with a head that wasn't full of fumes, I agree.

Ethyl actetate, 100% ethanol and acetone along with over working don't make for sensible decision making.

I've only just remembered I've left the speed-vac on as well. Ar$e

Bit of an update.

I finally found time to mod my clocks with some UV leds and some blue UV paint.

Look pretty good in the day, but fook me are they bright

apologies for the cr@p pics, had to take them with my phone.
I've bought some more leds and a variable resistor, so should solve brightness and patchiness in one foul swoop.

I also found time to vax my seats. Didn't look too bad to start, but 14 years of cr@p came out of them.
This is one seat. One!

I feel slightly ill as i've been sat on that. Ignorance was bliss lol

Annoying day.

Was going to a Chilli Fair today with the girlfriend, reversed off her drive and then "BANG!"

Clutch cable pulled completely through the lever on the box. The little clip that held it in place was knackered, and the end of the cable had pulled through.

Got it recovered home, and started my temp bodge repair:

Cut a washer down so it fitted in the clip, drilled a grove and this is the result:

Fitted it on, and it works! Will do me until I can get a new one from VW.

On a positive note, fitted my variable resistor to my speedo leds, so I don't get a tan at night now

Was looking through my pics to find one for the calender submission, and realised how old they were!

So an update is in order methinks.

Few little bits have been completed since last time.

Car went for MOT. Passed, just.
Needed two rear tyres, two rear bearings, corroded brake lines, fog light illuminating with brake lights, rear shock absorbers reduced efficiency, handbrake at 18% efficiency and oil misting on shocks.

Tyres were no problem, had two part worns in the garage so got those swapped over onto the BBS's.
Fog light was due to the passenger side cluster failure. So when the brake pedal was pressed, although no rear lights came on, the fog warning light did. Whilst I was at it, I hammered through the rear cluster blank, so I have twin rear fogs  :smug:

Handbrake was only working on one side properly, hence the 18% efficiency. Cable was slacker than a rednecks jaw. Tightened it up so all sorted now.

Rear shocks, changed those reasonably easy. Solved my sideways skipping going round corners too. Nearside shock was especially ruined, the welds on the lower spring cup had started to fail, so was only held on on one side! Nice.

Bearings were a pain, as the caliper carrier bolts were seized. Only had to grind one off, and a trip to the scrappy soon solved that.

This weekend I crawled under the car with some wet and dry, and managed to get most of the corrosion off the brake pipes. Metal was still good, just covered in cr@p! Waxoyled them up good and proper.

Pleased it didn't need any welding though.

In other news, I got fed up of the door pins rattling. So took them clean out, filled the holes, and even put an led in the drivers side one. I have a switch secreted so I can get out the car if needs be

Girlfriends dad painted my new grill too:

All 501 bulbs have been swapped for white led versions, which make it look loads cleaner at night.
Headlights are new too, mine were really pitted and the glass was going cloudy. Plus the plastics adjusters had all shattered. Still joey'd them though

I'm really pleased with it, and even at 4x4 ride height, the handling has been massively improved with the new shocks

New Exhaust

Got fed up with my twin pea shooters, and this cropped up on ebay.

S/S Jetex Cat-back ending in twin 300mm tail pipes. Bargain as well.

When old system was taken off, it was a bit worse for wear, bit rusty and a couple of holes  :lipsrsealed:

New one is a bit quieter on a cruise, but has a got a lovely rasp  and pops on the overun

Here's a quick vid:

In other news, the girlfriend is getting me Eibach Sportline springs for Christmas, and the parents are buying me new Sachs front shocks to compliment.

Hey Guys,

I finally got round to replacing the needles on my clocks. Wasn't too bad, bought another set from a vr6 off a member on her and used a combination of parts. I got rid of the UV leds as they were really patchy, and the UV paint kept flaking off.

And heres the droopy needle shot as promised!

Instead I painted the new needles with blue modelling paint (so much easier to apply) and fitted blue leds behind the screens and green ones for illumination.

Looks neater than before imo.

My project for over the winter was to get rid of the dirty beige upper interior. Mine was heavily stained from years of abuse, so I hatched a plan.
Mine is going blue pillars with black headlining, black sunvisors, black handles and black interior light.

Heres the pile of cr@p before I started
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0053.jpg)

Before
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0054.jpg)

After
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0055.jpg)

Heres my new sunvisors
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0058.jpg)

This is the stuff I'm using on the headliner
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0057.jpg)

TADA!

Before
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0059.jpg)

During
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0061.jpg)

After
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0064.jpg)

An awful picture of my working conditions
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0062.jpg)

And something a little marmite. My door handles were very scratched and battered, so whilst I'm on the lookout for a CC interior, I've sticker bombed them
I'm still not sure of it, but at least it livens the interior up a bit. Everyone I've had in the car since I've done it has liked them anyway.

And in other news, GF has recieved my new eibach springs for my xmas present, and my dad has bought me two new front shocks.

I'll put some pics up when its all dried properly, got my headlining almost ready, and finished the grab handles yesterday. blue bits are taking a bit longer as the cold makes spraying a bit hit and miss.

The sunvisors are from a cabriolet, so are originally black. The other bits are hard plastic, so i was ok spraying them, but wasn't sure on the visors. i've seen somone on polo forum paint them before.

I'm really pleased with the result. The headliner looks pale, but its the flash on the camera. In person it looks much darker, kinder like black suede.

And I got some new bits for xmas!
2 front shocks
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0074.jpg)

and some sportline springs
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/Photo0073.jpg)

Will be doing these when the weather is drier and warmer, plus I'm starting my final year project so can't do without the car. I'm sure nowt will go wrong during installation, but I can't take the risk.
Also gives me time to source new everything, bolts, top mounts and bumpstops.

Cheers

Title: Re: Trog's Mk3 8v - Bring on the Leather!
Post by: trog_nfs on 01 February 2012, 10:40
I've been keeping an eye out on ebay for a set of leathers for my car. I was either looking at the blue colour concepts, or plain black leathers.

These came up on the bay. Emailed the seller when his auction failed, and got them for a tidy sum
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/photo3.jpg)

Alll four seats, headrests front and rear, door cards, new door handles. Yipee!

The drivers seat bolster had started to collapse, so I decided to nip it in the bud whilst I had my old interior.
I pulled apart my passenger seat to get the foam seat base out.
One of the hardest things I've ever done!
There are these metal hooks that hold the upholstery to the seat base, under tension!
I was so knackered I forgot to take pics  :embarassed:

Anyway this is my old base:
New (from passenger seat)

Leather!

And after much straining, groaning and my best he-man impressions, I got the leather back on!

I just had to tension the base back up, then they were ready for the car.

The leather has gone a bit tough and needs a good clean and treatment, so I'll post up some pics of the interior in the car when I've done that.

Cheers

Cheers dude. Not a job I would want to repeat any time soon. Swapping a passenger seat onto a drivers base would be easy if the fabric is the same, but changing the foam is a b!tch. Stupid metal hooks.

Just want to find a heated seat loom and switch, but they go for like £100 on fleabay! For some frickin wires!

Good work, this is a job I need to undertake at some point on the leather interior I've recently aquired.
Like yours my drivers bolster has just started to flatten out and needs the foam swapping before the leather gets ruined completely.
Was it an absolute nightmare to do, how long did it take you roughly?
Title: Re: Trog's Mk3 8v
Post by: trog_nfs on 02 February 2012, 11:36
I did it in a morning. Didn't take as long as I though, as most of it is pretty easy, just the wires bit.

Getting the base off the seat is easy, only a couple of metal tabs and a metal coathanger essentially.

For the wire hooks, I used long nose pliers and strong cable. For the front to back wire hooks I threaded the cable through the hook and pulled, worked really well.

It was the two side-to-side hooks that were the worst. My advice is get the wire roughly in place in the groove of the foam, then try man-beast it into place.

I got a good idea how to do it from this thread, and by doing the old passenger seat first.

Thing is though, if we all liked the same things we'd all have purple cars with blue lights. Besides, inc the airbag it was cheaper than a vr wheel.

Its a popular mod with the polo and ibiza boys. Lifts the cabin in those cars, have to see on the mk3.

I think the main thing is the large shiny badge. I do have an aluminium handbrake and some details on the gear knob so I think it may tie nicely. Only one way to find out! :lipsrsealed:

Right it is on! The lupo wheel is a direct fit on the mk3. Air bag and horn require no messing with which is always a plus.

Anyways, here it is:

The back bit of the wheel needs transfering, but again direct fit.

The airbag is a bit of a mission though.

What dya reckon then? I like it, and as a bonus its smaller than the mk3 one, so more space for my knees.

I'll get a few pics in the daylight without the flash. I think it looks good in person, expecially as my opinion is the mk3 plastic wheel looks a bit dated.

Not much to post on the progress front, apart from the suitcase box in the jetex started rattling! Baffless had gone, so got a bit of pipe welded in instead.
Have to say, its made a very nice change, as the noise is now fantastic, but its still quiet at a cruise.
I'll post a vid up comparing the two exhaust notes.

Otherswise my mate whos a dab hand at photography took some pics of the car the other night, I think its come out ok

Looks like a great colour to work with, wish mine was blue sometimes, can get a real deep shine from them.
Can't really argue with anything you've done so far, other than the debadged grill, it's all about the blinging VW badge if you ask me!
Blue pinstripe is inspired, a nice change from the standard-issue red.
Get it lowered, I think the weather now counts as being nice?  Will really unify all the mods you've done so far and give it an air of completion.

It is being lowered next week, as i break up from uni for easter.

It was a bit embarassing, as i went to my mates all jdm meet with a vw and still had the highest :embarassed car there!

My badged grill is a bit knackered, but as this one has picked up a ton of stone chips i might ask my gfs dad to respray it.

Its lowered!
Its still settling a bit, but will get a little lower.

Also got a new rear bumper on
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/2012-04-16172751.jpg)

Got both track rods changed when the tracking was sorted too, the drivers one was fecked! The end undid a little bit then just fell off.

Also was greated by a puddle under the car
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/2012-04-16172803.jpg)

The hydraulic engine mount is fecked and exploded.
Tried to change it today, the big bolt in the middle is spinning and won't come out
Plus I took the clutch cable off to get a bit more space, and it adjusted to its tightest setting and won't disengage the clutch

So today I broke more than I fixed.

Its on new sachs shocks all round with eibach sportline springs.
Took the oppurtunity to change all bolts, mounts etc so it handles superbly now.

Just won't go anywhere at the moment

Well the golf had been well and truly neglected over the past few weeks, what with my final year exams and the hose-pipe ban.

But I've now finished uni, and I've got some time to give the old girl a bit of tlc.

First things first, the buggered gearbox mount.

Took it down to a friendly (if slightly dodgy) garage to get his powertools out and change the mount as the bolt was spinning. Got a new one from VW in the end as europrats gave me the wrong one twice!

Still covered in hydraulic fluid as it went everywhere!

Took the oppurtunity to change the front one too.

Can no longer rock the engine by hand! Really improved the throttle response changing these. I think before the first bit of pedal travel was taking up the slack in the engine bay.

Of course a new clutch cable
Of course europrats gave me the wrong one of these first.

I also took the oppurtunity to change the spring caps for lowering ones
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/DSCF2546.jpg)

So this is how she looks now
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/DSCF2547.jpg)

The eibach springs/shocks combo is really nice. They've softened and settled a bit now, so nice and comfy on a cruise, handles great, and you can go hell for leather on rough roads without bouncing all over the place.

Still sits a bit high at the front, but I think thats because its got smaller wheels on the front.

I'm looking at mk4 Montreal II wheels to replace the VRs which I think will look

Title: Re: Trog's Mk3 8v - New Shoes
Post by: trog_nfs on 24 June 2012, 20:14
Since I bought them, although I like the design, I've always thought that the VR6 BBS wheels look a bit small, especially in the satin black finish mine had.

So, a hunt began for some new shoes, which led me to these:

I've always liked the Montreal IIs, so grabbed a set with some rubber left on them. Whacked them on as they were, but wasn't completely happy. My dad then piped up, and despite the fact he doesn't agree with most of the things I do with my car, said they would be better in BLAAAACK!

As with most monty IIs, they had a fair bit of corrosion on them, so it was time to break out the 80grit aluminium paper. Took me the best part of a week and a half to just sand the four back to metal:

Here you can see the areas I've roughly been grinding, and there's quite a bit of corrosion.

This is what I ended up using
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/2012-06-13115347.jpg)

Primer
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/2012-06-13115238.jpg)

Painted
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/2012-06-13115305.jpg)

Out in the sunshine
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/2012-06-20115824.jpg)

On the car:

Overall I'm really chuffed with the finish, and the paint was tough enough to survive the local tyre place rebalancing the wheels too.

In fact there was so many layers of paint on one wheel it wouldn't even go over the hub

Given that I've not sprayed anything exterior before, and this was a rattle can job, I'm really pleased.

The next task was to clean the interior, but I got a bit carried away  :embarassed:

Thats not rust round the bungs in the back, it was clear waxoyl which I cleaned off and put proper sealent in and painted.

The passenger footwell was a little damp, so I took the whole lot out to find the cause and to dry it out.
Was a dislodged grommit behind the pollen filter.
Tidied up all my sub wiring whilst the carpet was up though, lot better now.
Drove the car like this for a giggle, just put the drivers seat in. Was so much quicker, but god was it loud!

My current project is...., well see if you can guess from these two clues:

Would have saved a lot of bother if I'd kept them silver, but at least all the dreaded rot is gone.

VW did make a few nice looking rims over the years, better than my other halfs fiesta anyway.

It is a satin finish, and the shots of them on the car are a bit pants as I was typing this thread up and released I didn't have any pictures of them on the car. Hence why my jack is stil wedged under the front too

When they've burnt out. The rears have not got long left on them
Title: Re: Trog's Mk3 8v - New shoes
Post by: trog_nfs on 06 August 2012, 18:15
In my last posts I showed pics of a holey floor and a dropped exhaust, which had all been done in preperation of changing the rod change bushes. A horrible, filthy, sweary, disgusting and ultimately rewarding job which has completely changed the shift!

Its now tight and doesn't crunch into second gear.

I also took the steps of changing all four tyres off the monty IIs, and the constant scraping over bumps and rubbing was doing my head in.

So a few pennies later, four new 195/45/r16  T1Rs are gracing the mk3.

When the rears were taken off, one had been rubbing on the shock, and the other on the arch and had worn a nice groove. Ooops  :lipsrsealed:

Only problem is now the wheels appear to be hiding in the arches, so spacers may be required.

The more observant of you may have noticed the roof rack; I do a little  bit of mountain biking and didn't fancy puting it in the car and getting mud all over the leather. So a votex bar kit and a thule bike carrier were on the cards.

Then i got a bit bored
(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/2012-08-04171405.jpg)

IMO the changes I have made over my ownership of this car have transformed it. It drives so much sharper, which I know being a mk3 doesn't say much, but going for a drive still puts a smile on my face.

Title: Re: Trog's Mk3 8v - One healthy golf = MOT Passed
Post by: trog_nfs on 15 August 2012, 14:13
Well the main news on the mechanical front is that the car went for its MOT yesterday.

Passed first time with no advisories which was brilliant.
Then told the tester (who is a good old boy) about the little sweepstake on the forum, and he said that if I want no advisories next year it would cost me a packet of choccy hobnobs . Seem to be currency round these parts.

Last night though me and my mate went a did a few arty farty pics in the dark, such as painting with light etc.

This was made doubly difficult by the golfs dark colour.

Heres some of the results though, see what you guys think.

Title: Re: Trog's Mk3 8v - Been painting some bits
Post by: trog_nfs on 07 September 2012, 16:01
I was getting fed up with the grey rear spoiler. The heat gun trick worked once, but subsequent use made it streaky and no amount of autoglym could solve that.

Instead I bought a tin of bumper paint which is supposed to dye as well as coat the plastic.
I think the results speak for themselves. I haven't put any dressing on yet either.(http://i1104.photobucket.com/albums/h327/trog_nfs/2012-09-07102920.jpg)

A few of my friends have japanese cars, and the engine bays always look so much more aesthetically pleasing than the rather messy under-bonnet of the 8v.

So, here is the before shot.

I had previously brush painted the cam cover when I replaced the gasket. :lipsrsealed:
Hammerite is a b!tch to get off.
Took a few overnights in nitromors to fix that.

Many hours and moons later:

This then snow balled and I ended up painting the cam cover, the airbox, the maf housing, the throttle body and the top half of the inlet manifold.

Any way, this is the result:

Maaaad!

I also bypassed the throttle body water supply. More to make it easier to take off. As far as I could tell, the hose comes out of the front engine outlet to the throttle body, then to the coolant bottle. I just connect the outlet to the bottle. Whats the worse that can happen?

A little update, been a slow couple of months.

I've started a PGCE, and this means no time to do anything !

But here's what I have done.

During the snowy weather the alternator and the battery decided the car didn't need any electrical power anymore.
Both failed on my way to my school after being stuck in a traffic jam for 3 hours and the car ground to a halt.
Luckily some kids in one of my classes and another teacher were passing and helped me push it into the car park.

Recovery guy that evening said it was only the battery, but after changing it (warranty ftw) the car died again in a services.

As its an Air con car it runs the larger 90A alternator, which was a bit pricey.

On the brightside though....
For Xmas, I bought myself a Dodo Juice Buff Daddy polisher, and set about attacking the Golfs paintwork.

Then about a week later, the car was re-ended by some twit in his company insignia. Bad times

Luckily the damage was only to the rear crash beam, everything else is as straight as it left the factory. Winning.

Other than that, I got the wheel alignment redone. Toe was 7mm out on the nearside. OOOPs

End of this month the old girl may be for sale.

I have a JDM itch I need to scratch, and whilst the Golf has been a good companion, I think its time for a change.
Hopefully someone will buy her and keep her going as she is mechanically sound....

Ha cheers dude.

I've had mk3s since I passed my test, and I've had this one nearly 3 years.

Just fancy a change.

Got my eye on an import
