driving along, lost all power, car rolled to a stop. Turned key to see if car would start and starter spinning but doesnt sound like its connecting with anything if that makes sense? Or its spinning flywheel aswell but thats about it. Engine itself isnt turning over.
Cambelt or something else?
-
Faulty starter? Drive end not spinning? :undecided:
-
Ahh bugger, If its crapped out whilst going its not going to be the starter as to why its done it.
Need some audio of trying to start it ? Or take it to your mechanic if your not doing it yourself?
-
What lights are on on the dash when you turn the key to the final click before trying to start?
-
Sounds like cam belt to me? Pull the top plastic pulley cover off and see if the belt is slack or just not there.
Nick

Very true
-
AA bloke has just come and said cambelt. Was still on there when he pulled cover over and looked tightish but he 100% sure.
Are there varying degrees of how bad it gets or am i defo guna have bent valves etc?
-
if you have no compression (whizzing starter motor), you have bent valves
-
Was the belt overdue to be changed?
-
oh no, thats bad news!
-
Might have snapped nearer bottom so not visable at top and still seemed tensioner, did AA guy attempt to crank it by hand?
-
On my Passat the belt itself didn't go, but a load of the teeth came off and got thrown into the engine, so on a basic visual inspection it looked ok.
-
Was the belt overdue to be changed?
dam!! hope it was done a few k ago.. n not long over due.
-
same symptoms as i had dave and engine was bloody seized not saying its gonna be same for you tho hope you get it sorted mate bloody cars always got your hand in your pocket
-
No jordy, didnt try to crank it by hand? Is that what i should try 1st?
What are my options?
1. Buy new valves, cambelt kit and get head rebuilt.
2 Buy 2nd hand head and new kit and go from there.
3. Break it and see what i can get for it?
Really dont wanna do 3 but need to be realistic.
99 Agu with 86k miles, thought that belt got changed at 60k. Have reciept for 'drive belt'..
-
30k should still be covered by warranty, if it was less than 4 year ago, you 'might' be able to claim to get the engine fixed, i assume you got parts from vw?
-
bugger mate
drive belt doesn't mean tensioner though...
-
Wasnt done by me, was done by a garage in London by previous owner. Was 'drivebelt' on invoice, no idea if gen parts or not. Dont think i will have any come back from that.
On a good note, pick my new wheels up on wednesday
If i get new head, need;
2nd hand head
Cambelt, tensioner, waterpump
Head gasket + kit
Change mainfolds over
Change cams over
New head bolts.
That everything?
-
there is a silver lining if you do need to change the heads over, you can change your turbo at the same time
-
id still ring the garage to see if there was any guarantee, worth a try, how long ago was it done? no harm in ringing up and asking
-
True, think invoice was from 2007 though.
Other problem is garage is over 200 miles away and the most expensive stretch of water in the world (99% sure of that)
-
where's the car mate?
and answer your texts
No most expensive for £ vs distance is the Cowes chain ferry lol
-

Would that have been the cam belt, sounds more like the alternator belt.
-
From here Dave....
You need to confirm issue,
* Engine needs stripping down to gain view of cambelt, You could turn it over by hand but its pointless really you need to confirm the fault.
That needs checking first before moving to a resolution.
-
opened up cam cover and the belt is definately not moving when key is turned, but seems tight, how do i turn over by hand?
I have taken video but cant upload till 2moro as not at home, starter is definitely turning, so will be flywheel(?), but when i do that, 90% sure, its not moving pistons, just sounds like starter spinning?
Can be anything to do with starter as car was moving when cut out.
Going to send it down local garage soon just to have a look whats going on, and if i decide to do it, going to probably go 2nd hand head route if belt has snapped..
HELP!!!
-
if it's a whirring noise when turning it over just the bottom end will be spinning, you will be losing the compression generated through the open and possibly bent valves
I'd go and have a look with you if it wasn't so wet and dark
-
Well, that sounds about right, great
Looks like i might have some bits for sale soon
-
ahh what a b!tch mate whats the situation on your wheels and what ones did you get after
-
Picking them up tomorrow, genuine R32 jobs
-
Dave I feel sorry for you bud.. Must be something in the air my mates starlet cambelt went last night sitting in traffic  and that was a uprated hks jobby
-
gen r32's nice

Shame im not going to be able to use them! Either for a long time or ever
-
is your car fubbered then dude any news as to what you definately need ? :undecided:
-
not yet, garage soon to check.
Moving out next week so funds at a bare minimum too. Not good
-
ah no way
-

-
Seems like cam belt if you were driving and it cut out. If it was the starter motor then it would not have cut out when driving.
Although it could be cam belt, battery or alternator?
-
I have no mechanical knowledge, but in the vid it doesn't sound like my Passat when the cambelt went...
-
try take the cambelt cover off the bottom , at the pulley , then try turn it over with a breaker bar or big wratchet and then youll be able to see if the cam pulley is moving round with it
-
You need to get the bottom cover off really to get a better look, can't really tell from the vid as it's not long enough.
Put the car in fifth gear and get someone to push it while you watch the belt, that would rule out the starter motor.
-

+1, or jack up one side and turn the wheel by hand..
-
Vid needs to be longer but sounds like no compression
-
valves have gone i recon.. not as hard of a job as it sounds.. its just more daunting going over it in your head.. sell some of the mod bits to pay for fix !!
-
+1, or jack up one side and turn the wheel by hand..
Will this work then? Can do this tomorrow just to check?
Just take cam cover off and try to spin jacked up wheel?
-

Guess so. With it in gear yes? :undecided:
Weird. Video sounds like only the starter is spinning and nothing else. You think it might be turning the crank which aint connected to the cambelt anymore (ie Cam gear aint turning)? Slipped the keyway off the lower pulley perhaps?
Good luck with this mate, I hope its something silly (ie cheap to fix).
Also good luck with the move!
-
just take cam cover off and put a bit spanner on the nut and turn the engine over..
-
Weird. Video sounds like only the starter is spinning and nothing else.
This is certainly what it sounds like to me!
Hoping for an easy fix to, but knowing my luck 101% sure it wont be
-
like mine then dude only luck i get is bad friggin luck
-
Right guys, is it the bottom cover i need to take off aswell as the top??
-
Right top cover off and looking at belt, its exactly how it should be.
Have remove AUX belt and 3 bolts for bottom cover but cant see how do get it off?
-
Right After rounding off two of the allen bolts  that sit in pulley to remove bottom and middle covers, as i was squeezing out car to punch/kick/beat something, i moved wheel on way out and saw that the belt moved... complete.
So gets out from under car, span wheel, in 5th and belt moved round freely. However the belt has lost about 3 inches worth of teeth.
I take it that this is as bad as the belt snapping and im back to square 1??
-

 Sorry to say but yes that will have bent valves.
-
Dammit Dave get the car back to Newport and we could have the head off in an afternoon
-
Is it 100% chance the vlaves are bent?
I have turned engine over by spinning wheel in 5th gear and seems to have compression?
Car goes down garage tuesday, they are just going to put a new belt on, then turn it over by hand, if all is good after that, going to try start it.
Wes, who would you send head to to get it rebuilt or would you DIY?
-
The only guy I would get to check the head over and possibly rebuild it would be Snowy out in Calbourne but not sure how busy he is at the mo.
You might have compression on maybe 2 cylinders but chances are at least one valve is bent somewhere. Don't forget the 1.8T has 12 inlet valves and 8 exhaust, 4 more than most 4 cylinder engines.
If you want his number I'll grab it for you. I'm guessing something has seized to cause the teeth to strip...
-
3 inches worth of teeth is a lot of teeth to lose and cause no damage.. i recon you would have bent at least 2 valves.. they are picked up cheap enough and fit yourself or get a buddy (wez) to do it for you he has nothing to do anyways.. (no alloys or a littleun :nerd: )
-
2 kids actually lol
-
Yeah cheers pal, if you could, that would be great.
Worth a chance on the off chance tho just incase luck is with me this time i suppose
-
sorry for hijack dave.. but wez aint you got a little littleun like recently ??
-
Doubt you would have not bent any valves, also very odd to strip the teeth unless something locked up.
-
As you say Wayne but makes it wierd that it stripped 3inches of teeth and now able to rotate without fault.. smashed waterpump or sometihng ??
-

I was thinking water pump as well, very odd.
-

Yes mate, got 5 week old and a 3 year old girls running me ragged lol
-
ive heard that there must have been another fault which stalled engine and stripped teeth, but didnt sound anythin sinister when it did stop? Cant find reciept for a water pump so im guessing it might be plastic impellored original? Could that stall it or would that just disintergrate?
-

It could stall it if it broke up yes.
-
Hoping it is waterpump, atleast i will know what went wrong.
Updates tomorrow :lipsrsealed:
-
Right so, tested on cylinder 1 & 2 and valves bent in both.. new head needed.
Pics of cambelt at bottom of post, was original belt and broke at 86000 miles, change yours if you havent already way before this, the teeth have literally been stripped off, and going EVERYWHERE round the belt.
So just found this new cylinder head on ebay, first off, will it fit, secondly, should i be concerned about the ''just weaker pressure on 4 inlet valves ''?

Please help us out guys, miss my car soo bad

I wouldnt buy one off ebay unless they close to you and you can view.. thing is they could have bent valves and stuff and not list them..
contact someone like purelyVAG he might be able to get you one for a decent price..
-
I have already with no reply, it says weaker pressure on 4 but just needs cleaning? I can get this sonic washed, just need to know if its going to be an issue. Time is of the essense unfortunately
-
Call him on 07923222024 Jordy...
I personally wouldnt go for that one with 4 inlet valve being weak..
-
I don't think it will fit anyways as it's off a Pissrat
There are about 6 AGUs breaking on ebay Dave...
-
just gone and entered details into all of them online breakers yards, should hear back tomorrow.
Also messaged all the AGU's breaking on the bay, that was only head i could find listed
-
Weaker could mean knackered springs, try and find another.
-
surprised the belt lasted that many miles tbh.
if you were gonna buy that head then you should budget to replace the valves too, 8 exhaust vaves at 35 quid and 12 intake at 30 quid!
in other words, not worth it. give vee-dubs a ring, there probably not the cheapest but they do a years warranty on there parts and do a quick turn around
http://www.vee-dubs.co.uk/
-
http://myworld.ebay.co.uk/fircof1
or pm this bloke, breaks 1.8ts and vr6s
-
if you were gonna buy that head then you should budget to replace the valves too, 8 exhaust vaves at 35 quid and 12 intake at 30 quid!
I was told that the valves were a tenner each??
Thanks for your links though pal, very helpful, ring veedubs tomorrow and already emailed the ebay breaker!
-
i looked on etka and that was the price on there. probably wrong, lol
-
Oh right, mine doesnt show up prices, that was local garage.
They said they have to come from VW though, so got to be genuine? Maybe they havent actually rang and presumed??
ALSO - How much should i be looking at for a 2nd hand head??? 250 is the lowest so far? Want another 100 quid off that really
-
£10 each sounds cheap to me.. yet im sure i heard someone say they got the valves replaced at £35 per valve (fitting)
-
Right what cars also have AGU engine, ive sent probably 100 emails out on ebay and awaiting reply, some cars are just listed 1.8t and ive emailed them as the fall roughly into AGU age bracket, 1998 - 2000?
mk4 golf (obviously)
audi a3 (sure it does)
audi a4 ?
bora ?
octavia ?
audi a5 ?
audi a6 ?
seat ibiza ?
seat cupra ?
passat (dont think this does)
any of the 1.8t beetles?
-
you also have ARZ around that time i belieeve..
-
yeah, ive mentioned its an AGU im after in all the emails, just looking at what cars i should be searching for really
-
have you contacted purely Vag ??
No breakers on the island ??
-
Our 2 scrap yards sell the decent cars they do receive to your scavengers i think
Yeah contacted, but no reply.
-
you looked on uk-mkiv's ??
-
does it make a difference to the head if the engine is fitted transverse or inline? cos that would rule the audi a4+ out
did you ring vee dubs, they had an early mk4 golf in there last time i was in, it was a gti but dunno if it was 2.0 or 1.8t
-
no, only got their number tonight so that will be tomorrow.
Have no idea about transverse, thats what im trying to find out aswell
What should i look to be paying, 250 lowest so far..
-
300-500 is usually the going rate, so 250 is a bit of a bargain if its a good one!
while its off you not considering any performance modifications?
-
plenty of scrap yards in pompey
-
250 is a good price if its a good condition head.. tbh you dont wana be f**kings about with changing valve and such its more agg than anything
-
Well its always going to be taking a chance on condition buying 2nd hand i guess? If i was going to be changing valves etc, id just do mine.
300-500? Is that reconned? Most AGU engines are ive seen are 300-500 for the whole lot?
-
If it helps the VW Part number for your AGU cylinder head (off ETKA) is
">058 103 351 E"
With valves and camshaft fitted it is called
"#058 103 265 BX"
Did a quick qoogle search;
Audi A4 it appeared on the ADR and AEB engine code too
Passat Synchro (if there is such a thing in the UK) it appeared the ADR engine
Passat B5 it appeared on the ANQ and AWL engines
-
mate i payed £500 for complete agu engine out of an a3 had everything with it turbo etc all i needed off my old engine was alternator and starting motor the engine had only done 49k to and had it delivered for that price aswell if i was you id just change the whole lot dude
-
Thanks Mr_Orange :afro:
Thing is Cully, im on a budget lol, i know thats not bad, but would still do cambelt, waterpump, tensioner, full service on new engine and also swap ECU's as mine stage 1.
Engine 500
ECU swap - Vagcom/tacho - 30?
cambelt, water pump + tensioner - 170 delivered
full service - 50
Talking 700+ atleast.
If i can get a head for 200, knocks 300 off that straight away. My AGU has done 86k, im the second owner, ECU been remapped so thats added hassle to change.
I move out this week hopefully into own house again and holiday in scotland for 10 days in 2 weeks time. Funds are tighter than a camels a55 in a sandstorm..
-
ah right didnt think of budget sorry dave always helps to have lots of the queens head in your pocket lol summat i never got
-
you dont need to swap the ecu, and you have to do timing belt and service anyway.
would be easier to drop new engine in, but less of a guarantee
-

-
You think houston? Would work out roughly same price after thinking about it to buy cos i would save on head gasket kit, but pay extra for bottom end with the head.. delivery would be more though.
Thing is wont chnging the heads over, and putting gaskets in be like a 3-5 hour job, and swapping engines over be like a couple of weekends job? Surely just the head will be easier?
I really dont know, so is good to hear different opinions.
That bank head for 250, brand new? Genuine you think as that seems like a fcukin bargain as id just put all my cams etc in? Can it be genuine and new for 250 of my hard earned notes?
-
No idea dude, I was just having a search round ebay for ya and spotted it so thought i'd post it up just in case!!
-
looks like a winner to me mate
-
cheers dude, reading through the feedback, he has sold ALOT and most are positive however the negative one said that they are from china. With all the amount sold though, looks like this might be a reasonable buy..
-
looks like a winner to me mate
What mate, the new head?
-
Just out of interest did you talk to this forum member? no idea why he's breaking it!
http://www.golfgtiforum.co.uk/index.php?topic=181255.0
-
yeah, PMed him today, and all the others in the section.
no idea why he's breaking it!

Looks a bargain :afro:
-
Im sure rich will be along with his OEM stick to bash us all about in a min
-
hold your horses with the new one, it says bare so I assume no valves?
-
hmm, true. Pic shows them though? What else goes in there apart from cam? Ive got everything else aint i?
-
Dont go by the pic.. go by whats advertised mate.. ive made that mistake before lol
I think you should first take your head off.. and see the extent of the damage.. if only 2-4 valves then just replace them.. job done.. atleast you know its going to work and not a head off ebay that may go at any time as you dont know its history..
at the end of the day you may have only bent 2 valves.. 2x valves = £60 ?? someone to fit them £40-60 ?? so thats £120 and then a new head gasket no idea how much £40 ?? so £160 for a head you know will be ok once fitted
That would be the way i would go.. rather than chances dodgey heads the time involved if they are sending back and getting refund etc etc..
-
Don't forget there's the potential to crack the guides with betmnt valves too
-
Yer but guides are not that expensive tbh.. i would do it properly just for peace of mind.. its your choice end of day..
-
Head pretty much off already, they are bent as compression test shows but not that visable its strikingly obvious.
Cylinders 1 and 2 were both down on compression, and i take it the sets of valves operate at same time? 3 inlets open together, then both exhaust operate at same time, so at a bare minimum 4 will be bent (exhaust)? Worst case so far would be 6? All the inlets? or 10 which would be all?
-
dont pluck at straws just remove and see where you are buddy.. could be a couple could be loads.. if only a couple replace them.. if loads get a new head or prices yours up for a recon ??
-
It could be valve lapping time, what fun that is lol
-
I find it therapeutic
-
Thought i'd post this up just in case it was of interest/use, he states it's just the engine block but I know some people who would say the block included the head!
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/mk4-golf-1-8-T-engine-and-wiring-loom-and-re-mapped-ecu-/130488516094?pt=UK_CarsParts_Vehicles_CarParts_SM&hash=item1e61b8bdfe
-
Yeah you get the head on that, but 200 delivery, and no chance to pick up as its on the channel islands
-
Just bought a 2nd hand head 125quid. Hope to pick it up this week.
Where would you guys buy cambelt kits online from, VW spares = 170 delivered
No TPS where i am before you start
-
In that case go to TPS lol.. get a friend on the mainland to get from TPs and then give it to you ??
-
Off you trot then Tech, ill pay postage down :afro:
-

That would be fantastic adam, i have local garage enquiring tomorrow for me what they can get a kit for.
Need;
cambelt
pulley
tensioner
waterpump (metal or revised plastic)
If decent price, that would be great along with some beer tokens for yourself :afro:

Hopefully get old one off today, order cambelt stuff, head gasket kit and bolts and hopefully have it all bolted together for early next week!
Happy days unless sumin else is wrong

That's good news. You got the important bit sorted!
Maybe "the island" needs a VW specialist! Nudge nudge.....
"Dave's VW bits"
