Alryt guys and gals,
am im desperate need of some advice and hope i can get it here. I have pretty much tired out all other sites and still have the probs.
please bear with me through all the following info, its been ongoing for a month now, and im struggling through it (im not too machanical)
Car
mk3 golf gti
8V AGG
116000 miles
Problem
Car will turn over but not fire or start
It IS sparking
It IS getting fuel
What I Have Done
Changed
Plugs
Leads
Ecu (have tried 3)
Coil (have tried 2)
MAF (have tried 3)
Crank Shaft Sensor
Temp Sensor
ECU relay #30
Fuel pump relay #167
Checked
Timing at both belt & dizzy (spot on)
Fuel getting to rail (removed fuel lines at rail and is getting plenty fuel)
VAGCOM (showing no faults)
The imobilieser i have is the "key fob" type, with red LED just under key barrel, touch fob on LED area and imobiliser disarmed (its a standered VW imobiliser i have been told)
if i try to turn the car over without disarming the imobiliser it doesnt turn over, so i have ruled out imobiliser fault. (plus the imobiliser will not prevent car from starting, it will cut it out after 2/3 seconds, or so i have been told)
Of the top of my head i have now brought you guys up to date, but i am now lost. I need this car back "yesterday" and am out of ideas.
Can anyone suggest anything please. but please where poss explain things idiot proofly lol
Thanks

A chap on here had a very similar problem last year with his 8v. Turned out in the end to be a dodgy ECU earth. He also spent a fair bit replacing parts before someone did this for him. Might be worth a try Mate

any idea where to find this earth mate? i have checked/cleaned all the earths i can find.
-
any other help guys. if not im concidering breaking it
-
how did you get the problem? did it just not start one day? or has it been playing up before it stopped?...
-
its first prob i have had with the car. car drove fine, parked up at night, went out to start next day and nothing!!
-
might sound strange fella! but have you had a go at tow starting it?....are you sure you have a spark?
-
yeh, defo has a spark, and a good spark at that. And tow starting it no i havent.
-
try some easystart up the air intake and c if that fires up...had a prob on mine last year done my head in...turned out to be crank sensor which went brittle and shorted out my ecu, took me nearly two months to solve problem and lots of money..dont give up mate

will do, however having changed my crank sensor and ecu i wouldnt have thought that would be case would it??

when you say changed ecu i take you do know that you will need correct ecu for car and chip from the key and the ring leader that fits on ing barrel otherwise it will not start...ie all three items from doner car...if you have a spark and it fires with some easy start then i would say ecu issues...

i was told if i got an ecu from another car, same engine code,AGG, i could just have the ecu coded to the car using VAGCOM which is what i have done.. :undecided:
-
fair play! did you do this yourself or did someone do this for you?

mate of mine did it. former VW machanic, this car has now beaten him aswell :( None of the ECUs showed any faults on VAGCOM, same prob with all ECUs
-
sounds like something is not talking to something! but you prob allready new that :grin:try the easystart and c if it fires if it does than you can start rulling things out...defo strange one :undecided:
-
will try that later mate and see what happens.
-
It may be worth trying a new battery as although you say you have a good spark it's possible to have the engine cranking over with a spark but just not a good enough one to do the job.
Good luck with it though!

if you crank it with the plugs out, do you get smell of fuel? How fast does it crank? Does it even try to catch?
James

James
you get a smell of fuel without removing the plugs. and it turns over FAST, but no doesnt catch
-
oh. Fuel leak? If it cranks fast - i.e. sounds like it just spins - sounds like it has no compression. Can you compression test it?

nah, only smells of fuel if its turned over, im guessing the unburnt fuel... and as for compression test, the garage claim to have done that when they had it. I will see if i can hunt down some1 with compression tester and check for myself.

yeah if you swap ecu it can be recoded with vag-com easily. its if you want another key that things get tricky
-
Try replacing the ignition switch.
Mine used to fire up then die straight away!

>yeah if you swap ecu it can be recoded with vag-com easily. its if you want another key that things get tricky
apart from the keys, what is there to re-code if its the same type (engine) ECU?
>Mine used to fire up then die straight away!
if his is cranking and sparking its not the switch - its not firing at all from the sounds of it.
James

im not sure, i believe you are coding the ECU so it has same "code" as key, but i might be wrong :undecided:
and as for switch, it had been mentioned but due to the fact its sparking and fueling and turning over i didnt see how the switch could be an issue :undecided:

Well, sometimes my car wouldn't start at all..then sometimes it would just cut out when i was driving and wouldn't start..one Ignition Switch later and all was good.
-
can someone explain/show me where the ignition switch is, and how to change it.
thanks

the immobiliser box :)
the keys are coded to the immobiliser box, and the immobiliser box is coded to the ecu. if you swap ecu, you can match it to the old immob box easily with vag com, though it needs to be a 'registered' copy. if you change the box or keys things get tricky, you need vag-tacho to get the skc code, and you can only get that if you have matched key in the ignition.
if you get a matched immob box and chip you can fit these to your car and old key, then do the ecu recode thing, but we are digressing from the thread a bit now ;)
-
oh ok - but good information. The immob box is in the dash isn't it?

you dont need door handles i think you just take chip from key and put into yours...
-
yeah its tucked deep down in there under the clocks ish, follow the reader coil wire from the ign lock back to it :) complete bastard to get to though
-
did you get the problem sorted? im having the exact same issue with my golf just now, driving me mad. :undecided:
