I want to take this opportunity to thank all of you guys here for the advise you game me in the build up to ordering and getting me through the build period. Unfortunately i'm going to be parting with the GTi, despite only owning it 6 months.
It's been a superb, car but in our current situation we really need a car that can make it out and about in this snow. Sticking with VW, but going to hunt down a 57/08 plate Touareg. Can't afford not to make it into work.
It's been very entertaining reading some of your threads over the years, especially the arguments/debates!!!
I think after the new year i'll advertise the Gti. Sad times!
Thanks again all and merry Christmas!
-
Gtd is still quicker  , good luck with the new purchase.
-
bye.
-
I can't blanme you squirrelGTi. Was out with the lads today and the 4x4's route is certainly the way a lot of the guys seem to be going down now for practical reasons. Glad your sticking with vw.
All the best fella, have a great xmas and a happy new year.
Thanks for all your valued posts.
-
Oh dear, what a jilter.
Miss you.
Goodbye and good luck and enjoy the truck.

Decent set of winter tyres? don't forget it's only a few weeks of the year we get it like this. I live on the North Yorkshire Moors, like Scotland we get real snow, I've fitted 4 winter tyres and so far have had no problems.
-
Agree with Gizzy and the winter tyre route, but good luck with whichever you choose.
-
Last winter when I first had the GTi I was having some second thoughts because of the sliding around in the snow part.
This year I had winter tyres fitted in November, and it's running around like it was on caterpillar tracks. This is a really lame reason for parting with the car, when the solution is right there, and not even particularly expensive. (Cost me £240 for a pair of winter tyres, fitted to the 17" Monzas, and I was needing new tyres anyway, so if you like it hasn't cost me an extra penny so far.)
I live 800 feet up in the Pentland Hills, and my road to work crosses the 1,000 foot mark. We are NOT short of snow. I have to get up a hill out of the village with a hill start to get on to the main road. I've been making it into work like clockwork. Including one morning when I arrived to find the whole exercise had been declared too dangerous and the office was closed.
The solution is a LOT cheaper than changing your car. The winter tyres turn it into an entirely different beast. The difference is phenomenal, and that's with only two, as well.
Rolfe.

Unfortunate news Mr Squirrel.
I can understand your issues, I'm a little spoilt as I only live a couple of miles from work and can walk if the going gets nasty. Then again that's why I live that close to work.
It's funny really, not so long ago you couldn't give a 4x4 away (costs, social unacceptance during the 'gas guzzler' propoganda days) and now they're pretty much in demand thanks to the conditions over the last few weeks.
I'd say wait until the weather settles into spring and GTIs are back on peoples minds again before selling the thing, that's also when 4x4s go into their seasonal decline and the cost balance should swing more in your favour.
In fact if everyone clubs together and helps me buy a 4x4 so I can drive in the snow, I can guarantee the next few winters will be the mildest since the Jurassic period as everything I do seems to go arse shaped!
-
Don't go!
Go on flea bay and buy an old discovery for under 2 grand and you'll get anywhere in the snow, two of the guys in work have done this and not looked back and you'll only need to use it for a few weeks each year.
Because of this a Merc e320 cdi and a lexus is220d taking up full time residence in the works car park :-)
I've bought one too @ 1400 quid for fun in the snow :-)
-
I'm with the Doc on this one.
The loss that you will realise when selling the Golf will more than pay for a prefectly serviceable used 4x4. You will probably only need it for a few weeks of snow each year, so the rest of the year won't have to put up with its higher running costs and normal road compromises. Obviously you will need to tax it, but you can insure them through a specialist insurer on a limited mileage, agreed value policy. The type of policy that people use that go green laning. I know a few people that pay well less than £200 a year for theirs.
Seriously, do the sums, it adds up.
-
Keep your GTI and buy a Fiat Panda 4x4 with winter tyres.
Running cost will be next to nothing.
The only downside is if one have an accident with this tinky toybox, you got no chance!
Unless you need more space and you don't mind DEPRECIATION, I don't think one need to change your motor just for a few days of snow! Besides, a set of winter tyres will cost less. My friend in Latvia can drive their GTI in -20 degree. I just think as a country, we don't deal with the weather very well.
-
Wow thanks guys for all your kind words of support!
Interesting point regarding the Winter Tyres, especially those using them! It will be a great shame having to let the GTI go, as in the summer it's great fun. Windows down, country lanes, warm breeze....... ahhhhhhhhhhhh!! I remember those days
I'll have a serious look into the winter tyres.

The problem is where i live. I'm on a steep hill which nothing but 4x4's make it up and i don't fancy leaving the GTi away out of sight! Especially at night, i like her tucked away in the garage!

Have a read up on the Autosocks.co.uk website. they may be a good option for getting up the hill ( for next year now ).

Do you know that the FWDs that aren't making it up have winter tyres on? 'Cos it's my bet they haven't.
I am simply gobsmacked by what my GTi can get up now it has these tyres on the front. It is absolutely phenomenal. I would never have believed that a simple matter of a change of rubber compound and some nifty tread patterns could make so much difference. I swear it's like driving a bloody Land Rover!
Being serious, it will never be as good as a 4WD in winter tyres, but I'd back the GTi in winter tyres against a 4WD in summer tyres any day of the week. And I have a sneaky feeling that what you've seen getting up your hill might be 4WDs in summer tyres.
So think about that for a few minutes.
Rolfe.
-
Thanks Rolfe.
My neighbour has an Edt 30 and normally leaves work about 20 mins before me. On summer tyres he makes it about 15 meters. I would guess no one has got winter tyres in my area. A defender has got them massive off road things and i see him blasting it up the hill most mornings.
I'll defiantly investigate the winter tyres as it would seem they would do the job nicely. Seen a few vids on You Tube.
The GTI might be saved!!!!

So many of you have MTS (Margaret Thatcher Syndrome), as she would cut the arm off if one had gangerine of the finger!
Just a bit of snow and everyone wants to get a revolting 4x4. Amazing overkill.
Next, it will be ex-army tanks that will be in demand.
Get some winter tyres for Gawd's sake and stop burrowing in the wrong places.

I had no idea winter tyres were this good. Thank the lord for forums!!!
-
I got mine because of forum discussion last year.
I had no idea how good they were until four days after they were fitted, when it snowed like blazes. I was astounded by the amount of grip I suddenly had, compared to last year. I went right back to the garage that fitted them and started raving on about how good they were!
I'm running around in the most diabolical conditions, without a care in the world. I have a 100-mile Santa-run round trip planned for this evening in Central Scotland. Not anticipating any trouble.
I'm a fan. In fact, I'm deeply in love. I can scarcely believe what a difference a change in rubber composition and a fancy tread pattern make. You probably won't believe it till you try it either. Your only problem will become the idiots without the things that get stuck in front of you.
Rolfe.

Rolfe let us know how the Santa run goes. Would be good to hear how it went, especially as your way is worse than down here!

I sat in a Mk 6 Golf Match shod with winter tyres yesterday. It was simply amazing how he flew around without a care in the world. I really could not believe it. Convinced me to buy new wheels and winter tyres last night after the drive.
Car was shod with Conti 830Ps on all four wheels.
Simply amazing.

My Bonnie wears them and all is very well, stuck to the snowy tarmac like glue.
By the way we are all set for a white Christmas (by that I mean more snow) except for Scotland who according to the media won't have any more - just floods
-
Shod mine all round back in late October and the weather has been no problem at all - really sure footed. Even kitted out my missus's car with them. You've nowt to lose because if you decide to buy them and subsequently decide to change your car, just sell them on as there will be loads of people willing to take them off your hands. My guess is you won't sell once you've tried them

The drama at Heathrow is amazing. A total fcuk up. Shambles. Maybe the planes need snow tyres. As grit cannot be used in airports as it damages planes, they are in a pretty pickle.
Waiting for my Christmas guests to arrive from Athens. They cannot even get to the airport there as everyone is on strike! Only the taxi drivers are making a fortune.
Today, the queue for the Eurostar in Kings Cross/St. Pancras was amazing. Half a mile long outside the station. Eight hour waits.
At least my journey home in the Polo took 17 mins! A first!
Collecting Wolfgang on Wednesday morning.
Oh dear, oh drear!

Sorry to hear that you're selling your baby !
Though you may not have a Golf, I'm sure we will still feel your presence on this forum ?!!

Keep the GTI - you'll regret it otherwise.
I am very impressed with my Conti Winters.
Traction is to be experienced to be believed.
I have seen loads of cars stuck or abandoned over the last few days, when I go out now my only worry is the car in front getting stuck.
They are amazing in the snow and put the GTI at least on a par with a 4WD in summer tyres.
Don't forget also the massively improved braking below 7 C.

How much are these Conti Winter rubbers?
Also, has anyone's insurance premium risen after fitting winter tyres (I know its stupid, but I heard this on the news)?
-
£143 a corner (17") but most places have no stock right now.
The insurance thing was a total load of tosh, just call centre people not knowing what they were talking about.
If you're in any doubt just phone the main office of your insurance company.
There have been several articles in the news recently admitting it was all a big con mistake.
-
They can fcuk off IMO.
I'll just say that I got 2 punctures, had my wheels stolen and my tyres slashed. Let them prove it!

In the MFD it has a programme for running on winter tyres and there is a little bong noise goes off if you go over 55mph are you all using it that have winters or not?

Yes, you can set it to whatever you like. The only difference is it says 'Winter tyre speed XXX exceeded' on the display.
Your Contis should be rated for 140mph or so, just set the warning to whatever you feel comfortable with or just leave the standard warning on.

I've not bothered. The tyres are V rated, so not necessary

None of the fcuking business as to how I use my rubber.
They should be mightly pleased that I don't use the same rubber all the time and thus I am a safe operator.

It's one of those 'features' nobody really needs.
However, I'm one of those people that had to switch it on anyway - because it's there.

Rolfe let us know how the Santa run goes. Would be good to hear how it went, especially as your way is worse than down here!
Santa run was fine - no drama. Selected tour of my extensive network of cousins.
The original idea had been to do the Motherwell/Strathaven run on Sunday afternoon but as it was snowing quite heavily I decided against it. Not that I couldn't have made it, but because I would have to drive so slowly it would have taken ages. (And to be honest the presents weren't wrapped either, I'd have had to do that as a rush job over lunch.)
I had merely intended to do the Leith run after work yesterday. But as things turned out, I went to Leith first, then Motherwell, then Strathaven, then home. I didn't get away from work until six, because we were busy. The main problem was Edinburgh city traffic, and the roads were quite clear. After Leith I headed along the M8, which was absolutely fine. The trouble started when I left the motorway at Newhouse, and realised it was snowing and I was running on fresh snow. I had to stop at a garage to clear my windscreen because the screenwash is frozen solid, but otherwise the car was fine. By the time I got to Motherwell the snow had stopped and the main problem was the absolutely tragic town planning. That place is really atrocious.
I made two calls in Motherwell, picking up presents as well as dropping them off, but kept turning down offers of food and drink as I wanted to get on. I had thought about leaving the Strathaven stuff at the second Motherwell stop (sister of Strathaven cousin), but there were a lot of prezzies for other people (daughters and grandchildren as well as the cousins themselves), and it was all a bit complicated, and it seemed much easier just to make the run. By this time there were three-way cousin-calls going on saying "tell her not to go to Strathaven, there's freezing fog there", but I went anyway.
Got there about nine, unloaded the prezzies, and then allowed myself to be fed. Found a petrol station just before ten to make sure Prospero was fed as well, and set off home. That took over an hour because of the freezing fog, but at least it was patchy rather than continuous. Got home about ten past eleven.
The roads were well gritted and I think the journey could have been made in summer tyres without too much trouble. The value in the winter tyres was mainly in driveways and side streets, where I could park and turn with ease and confidence that I wasn't about to get stuck in a tricky position.
Two of the cousins came out demanding to see these tyres, as they'd read a letter about them I'd written to the Herald a few weeks ago. They had to be shown that they look like any other tyre, and drive like any other tyre. People still have this idea about spikes and studs and goodness knows what. I think the hard bit to believe is the astonishing difference in traction they provide, given that they don't look like anything unusual.
I'm off to the cinema tonight, meeting a friend way over near Glasgow. She drives a Polo, and is threatening to make me come and pick her up if the roads are bad....
Rolfe.

Nice write up Rolfe.
I've already starting looking for some rims. No chance in getting winter tyres for this year though.

Are you sure? Some people seem to be managing it.

Look on Ebay for part worns
Just picked up 4 tyres all with more then 6mm tread for around £200 (albeit in 16 inch format)
Doubt I'll see them this side of Christmas mind

Got the wheels. Not the tyres. But they've got my money!
Snow has melted and I've spent £1440. Bang goes the facelift.

Squirrel, I lived in Sussex for 18 years. I remember hitting a problem on the Brighton to Falmer road, once. One evening. In 18 years.
I know it's been exceptional, these last few weeks. But that's what it is, exceptional. It's not like living in Scotland. I can't help feeling you're over-reacting just a little.
If you're genuinely concerned this is going to go on, and keep happening, then winter tyres is the answer. But given how infrequent it's likely to be, a set of AutoSocks may be all you really need.
Rolfe.

Why not a Golf R ?

With my job and especially the mrs's job (looking after animals at a rescue centre) we've been stranded for 3 days with the recent snow and 5 days at the start of the month.
The snow that came in Jan'10 we were stuck for 5 days and then there was the snow last year in Dec, which was 2 days.
We seem to be in a bad area which is exposed to the elements and combining that with a steep hill didn't look good for the few that gave it a go.
We've had extreme weather now for the past 2 years and a few bad'ish spells before that. I'm just trying to better prepare us for future spells like this. I know it might not happen again for a long time, but IF it does we need to be in a position where we can get out.
I can sometimes work from home (IT), but a lot of the time i need to be onsite. My other half has absolutely got to get in somehow. A friend of ours has kindly been taking her in as he's got a Disco.
Hopefully you'll see a bit better where i'm coming from.

Kev,
Had an r32 before the GTi, that did pretty well, i did get stuck once and had to dig myself out. I think with the recent stuff it would struggle. It was above the fog lights on the the mrs's Golf GT.

Yes, I do see. I lived on the Weald. If you're on the Downs, then even if it's infrequent, snow is certainly trouble. The skating exhibition I was involved in was on the South Downs, and some colleagues of mine got stuck all night on the North Downs on a separate occasion.
I think, though, that if you're prepared to put the AutoSocks on, and take them off when you get to a gritted road, that could very well do it. The grip they give is simply phenomenal - the only real advantage an SUV could give would be coping with sheer depth of snow, which probably is just the difference between shovelling a driveway and driving over it.
As an example, last year we had 18 inches of snow actually lying here. One house in our road had just been vacated by the previous tenant, whose removal van just made it away before the really heavy dump of snow. The new owners couldn't get moved in because their removal van couldn't make it to pick up their stuff. They were renting a house in a remote hamlet right up in the Pentlands three miles away, up an exposed, single-track road.
They were running up and down between the rented house and their new home, in a very ordinary little car, wearing a pair of AutoSocks. While everyone else was getting stuck just in our road, which isn't very steep, this thing was just laughing it off. Not only that, it was making it right into the hills along that single-track road which must have been affected by drifting.
I'm pretty sure that if you had a set of winter tyres on the GTi, you'd be completely fine, no problem. I just think that if the snowfall is infrequent, you might find the AutoSocks are your answer. They're a lot more hassle than just changing the tyres and forgetting about it all till spring, but if the snow only hits occasionally for a few days, the hassle isn't so bad. And the grip even out-does winter tyres.
Rolfe.

Well i've decided not to make any rash decisions, so i won't be selling the GTi just yet. I'll make it through this winter and decide later on in the summer.
Which ever way i go, winter tyres will be cheaper to buy then and if i do decide to part with the GTi the "Toerag" should be as well.
So i'm not going anywhere just yet

I cant think of any other forum that entertains me as much as this one does.
This place has made Kev famous i think!!!

Why not a Golf R ?
Kev,
Had an r32 before the GTi, that did pretty well, i did get stuck once and had to dig myself out. I think with the recent stuff it would struggle. It was above the fog lights on the the mrs's Golf GT.
Ah ok, good luck with your new car then mate.

I bought 4 16" x 6" vw caddy steelies from ebay for £100 and had Goodyear ultra grip 7+ 205/55/16 fitted for £300.
Had them on for 2 weeks in which time i have driven 1500 miles
1 trip to Aviemore in Scotland very bad conditions for weekend skiing. rest local driving in 8" deep snow / compacted snow / slush / up hill/ down hill. These things are awesome.
I am still shocked how good these things are. Best item i have EVER bought for a car.
Keep the GTI, Buy some Winters, Forget the Toe Rag.

VW should consider adding this as an option. Winter tyres/wheels swapped and stored for 3 years.

Movi - you can show me the merits on Christmas Eve ;-)
Squirrel - I'm so glad your staying - even if you leave your welcome to come back anytime :-)

In my opinion, a GTI with winters would be better in the snow than a toe rag with summers.
The grip from winters is quite amazing.
Glad your'e staying for a while.
You know you would regret it if you let the GTI go.

+100%.
The Turdrag is such a halfway house. It's not a Porsche, so it's nothing.

Just in time for the 'big thaw'

Movi - you can show me the merits on Christmas Eve ;-)
Will Do . On snow with my 18s on, I cant even get in or out of my road.
last night came home from work to find cars abandoned all over the place.
My road is like a big bowl leading directly onto a down hill section of the A6
I drove past them all, round the corner and up the hill onto my drive with ease.
Made my self a brew and sat at the window watching all my neighbours hubbies and wife's pushing cars up the road.
I did go out and help when i'd stop laughing my c**k off.
Good job really, as the Mrs came home 5 mins later and needed pushing as well. :lipsrsealed:

Yes, GolfTi/Ami, unfortunately it has thawed now like my bank balance.
Will it snow again? I really, really hope so, so very much!
Lots of ice, white and black, will be really so very nice.
I'll pray (or prey) in Church, Mosque, Temple, Synagogue or wherever suitable for my hopes not to be dashed.

Agreed, i like the idea of storage at the dealer.

Return in March for a once over and summers.

How are you liking your winters?

I got choked on a bit of meat so I was out of circulation for a bit, literally!
GolfTi calls me Amy, usually. He won't give his name out in a PM to me either. Fair enough.
I can't keep calling him GolfTi as it is so impersonal. So I have decided to call him Ami which I think is quite friendly and warm. I don't know his feelings regarding this.
Now he insists on calling me Asker. Fair enough. But I'll keep calling him Ami which makes me feel friendly towards him.
I hope he does not mind.

I have very good reasons for not giving out any personal details on public forums. Please respect that.

How are you liking your winters?
Brilliant, the very best amount of money I've spent in ages. Had a couple of inches of fresh snow this morning and they just took it in their stride, being as the road is an undulating mass of smallish hills and bends I know for certain I'd have been in the hedge back with my summer tyres, but no such problems with the contis. Can't praise them highly enough.
What about you?

Ask me in the summer then it's the bluefin but right now the ContiWinters have been totally amazing.
Like a tractor on speed.
I wish I'd known this years ago.

Movi came over yesterday to play VCDS on his golf, while he was over I tried his car shod with snow tyres and I have to say I was very impressed, the car gripped and stopped much better than my golf on summer tyres.
In short it's a MASSIVE difference
Won't be selling my Mud and Snow tyred Disco though
