Title: Bens Mk3 GTi VR6, Twin Turbo build is starting
Post by: benvictors on 31 October 2010, 12:29
Thought it high time I started one of these, had the Golf a year now and although its nowhere near finished, its starting to come together nicely me thinks
It had 193,000 on the clock and was a little rough around the edges but for £500 with full service history I thought 'Why not'

When I first got her -

First thing I did was to give it a good clean, even though it had full service history with it, it had been a little neglected when it came to the bodywork and interior and the gearbox was making a bit of a noise

Next job was the wheels, they were a bit of a mess, filthy, scratched, scraped and curbed. Needed a couple of new tyres too so got on the bay and managed to get a full set of Long Beach wheels with good tyres for £35.... BARGAIN.

As they were -

Stripped em -

Repaired em -

Sprayed em + New centre caps -

Back on the car (sprayed my calipers red whilst the wheels were off) -

Decided I didn't like the standard look wheels after aboput a week, so off they came again, stripped and re-sprayed Graphite Grey

Made myself some wheel spacers at work and fit them with the newly sprayed wheels, 25mm per side on the front, 30mm per side on the rear, made it look nice an fat

Liking the rear stance. I need to get myself some spaces, although isn't 30mm dangerous? Heard 15mm is max in terms of safety  :undecided:

By now (around February this year) the gearbox was making a hell of a noise and the gear change was sloppy to say the least.
Replaced the thrust bearing on the box to see if this helped but after finding the old bearing all mis-shaped and metal filings in the end of the box I thought I'd better source myself a new one so went out and bought this for £350 -

Had 100,000 on the clock, part service history, full stainless exhuast, full Mulberry leather interior and 10-disc cd changer but had been sat for a over a year without even been started, charged the battery and hey presto, it started

Took it straight to my mates garage to see what it would need for an MOT, was gonna keep this one and break mine.
However, because it had been sat for so long the whole of the inner and outer sills had rotted, around £400 of welding aswell as new brake lines, new discs and pads and some other little bits an bats so went back to my original idea of stripping this one.

Took the gearbox out of it along with the leathers and the disc changer and got em on mine

Ha ha, not this topic again
I would be so bold as to say 40mm would be just about ok, yes it will put more strain on your wheel bearings but as regards to safety I would say they will be fine, I'm a fully qualified mechanical engineer of 14 years so I know a little bit about stuff like this (Not a lot mind )

After replacing my gearbox I decided to strip down the old one and see exactly what the issue was, It wasn't pretty -

The Input shaft bearing had destroyed itself making the input shaft rattle around in the end of the box,
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/Picture390.jpg)

fifth gear proceeded to start eating its way through the Thrust bearing housing,
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/Picture392.jpg)

I had to knock out the thrust bearing with a hammer so christ knows how the clutch was working

This is what was left of the bearing -

On installation of the new box I had a check of the gear linkage etc to see why it was so sloppy when in gear (About a 2" movement back and fourth when in any gear)
Turns out the Linkage Bush had disintegrated (The one on the right) So I made myself a nice new one out of some Nylon I had at work (The one on the left)

Whilst I was at it I made myself a short shift linkage bar too -

The new one is about 13mm longer and gives a nice short shift between gears, NICE

Next up started some interior modding, put the mulberry leather in got myself some leather cleaner and conditioner, Gliptone liquid leather = Good sh!t man
Sourced myself the heated seat loom and switch (£30 from a local scrappers = bargain) modded the switch then fitted -

Getting the Gliptone leather dye before Xmas to do the seats black, apparently no dye transferance and it lasts around 3 years, anyone had any experience with this????

Modded the clocks, by putting Blue and UV LED's in the top, replaceed the green filter paper behind the LCD displays with red and painted my needles with UV Red paint, however I will be changing these soon, I have the templates of the clocks now so Im gonna have a mess around with some different ideas, watch this space.......

Modded the Heater dials like this originally -
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/Picture386.jpg)

But then changed to this -
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/Picture204-1.jpg)
The blue LED on the rear window heater was a bit bright to say the least so took it back apart and put some blue electrical tape behind the switch to dull it down a bit.

Also did the rest of the switches in Red -

Ok, back to the exterior, decided I didn't want any chrome on the car at all, going for a straight red, Black and Grey theme so set about the badges.

First up did the boot and front grill VW in Graphite Grey and the GTI badge in Graphite grey with red background

Then did the side trim GTi badges Grey with red background -

Then the rear Golf GTI badge the same and painted my mud-flap VW's Red -

Got myself some Hella quads with brand new covers and a genuine VW deep chin spoiler for a very reasonable £80 -

Also sprayed my wiper arms Graphite Grey and fitted some Aero style wipers

Finally got some coilovers fitted, im about 70mm down on the front and about 40 on the rear, had to roll my arches on the back but they still catch slightly running 205 tyres, but that is soon to be rectified -

Things to come -

Re-furbing the Lemans wheels off the older Golf, Graphite Grey with Red VW, and fitting them with 195/50 R15 tyres to stop the rubbing. Dont see many Golf's running these wheels and will still keep the car OEM-ish which is my aim really

Full re-spray. I need 2 new front wings and a new tailgate aswell as some small rust patches here and there repairing, the cost of spraying for these is around the £200 mark and wont be an exact match, I can get a full re-spray done for around the £400 mark so thats the way forward in my eyes

Black leather dye for the interior, Gliptone seems to be the best out there, about £80 for the kit which does the whole interior, it doesn't come off on your clothes and it lasts around 3 years.

More interior mods, clocks to sort out, headlight switch to modify red and the sunroof switch to do.

And in a bout 18 months or so (Once my wedding si out of the way ) I will be looking at engine conversions

Thats all for now folks, will try to keep this as up to date as possible.
Cheers for looking

Loved reading this post, some really clever stuff you've done on the self made items, a proper built not bought car.

I still like the MK3 Golfs and think their following will only get stronger, if i don't convert my MK2 with a VR6 I fancy finding a nice MK3 VR6 to go with it.

Well done.

Cheers matey, I definately agree, the long hated MK3 is coming into its own at long last, as standard it never really looked like a GTI but with a few subtle mods here and there you can get em looking really nice.
Would have got a VR myself if I could have found a decent one for the right money at the time
The 8v engines in the Mk3 pull ok and, in my experience, are reasonably reliable if looked after but the engine conversion is defo summat I will be doing in the future

Pain in the arse to fit had to drop the rear hanger about 20mm so the box sat right, but it was all worth it in the end.
Looks great IMO

Done a full service in the last few days, started running like a bag of sh!t just lately, the trader I bought it from said he had done a service on it the day before I bought it so thought 5000 miles later should be ok for me to do one. WRONG!!
Fecking lying Tw@t Bar steward hadn't done one at all by the looks, the oil that came out of the engine was like tar and the oil filter felt like it was welded on, my own fault i guess but not to worry.
Did a full oil and coolant flush, the coolant system was full of sh!t too, soaked the expansion tank to gt rid of all the sh!t in it and cleaned out all the hoses and radiator, replaced the air filter and fuel filter and replaced the screen wash, did the spark plugs and HT leads when I got her cos she had a bit of a mis-fire.
Replaced the lower part of the crankshaft sensor hose as this was dripping oil, put it all back together, filled her all up and off I went, running sweet as.......
However, looks like the sump gasket needs replacing now   still one drop of oil on my drive on a morning so been under her and it seems to be coming from the front of the sump pan where it joind the block BASTARD
Well keeps me busy I suppose

Exhaust looks ok.  No point in oem bling on a daily, would only go nasty again with the fumes anyway.

Shame about the condition of the oil etc but I never trust a seller.  Even when I'm told it's just serviced the first thing I do is do my own within a couple of days for piece of mind.  I was told that mine had run on mobil 1 all it's life when i bought it and had recently just been serviced. I still redid it all..... Turned out he was telling truth.   :lipsrsealed:

I have the same sized paint scab in the exact same place, although mine has no bubbling. Must be common or something

I like the light touches mate, especially the W8 light mod and the puddle lights. Could you do a how to on them if possible?

Cheers Khare, It's through the metal now and is leaking water in so could do with sorting asap
I'll get a 'How To' put together for the light mods and stick it in the mk3 section, its the little touches that makes all the difference

Oh and btw Mr Grumpy, it's not hard to do the W8 mod. I asked for a guide not for me, but for other members.

At the end of the day it's not hard getting hold of 2 LED's, drilling a few holes and connecting them to the power feed from the sunroof switch

Hi Shaun, if your doin the text black its quite easy. sand the face of the badge first back to the black plastic, clean it up and spray whatever colour you want, in my case red, let the paint dry, then sand the face back to the plastic again, clean up again and lacquer, lovely

Thought I would give a little update on things about to happen and things I'm planning on my lil' baby
First up, this weekend me and my main man Kells are treating her to a full detail
Cut, buffed, polished and waxed
Bought a new tailgate and was gonna fit that before hand but as it happens it's nearly as bad as the one thats on with rust so gonna strip it and prep it for a re-spray in the near future, I need a new wing also so will do this in a couple of months and get em sprayed up together
Week after next buying my new tyres, going from 205's to 195's , looks better and will stop the rubbing on my rear arches
Putting the new tyres on the old school 'Le Mans' mk3 alloys, im machining the cap lip off the face of the alloys to make them flat faced, think the plastic caps look sh!t and this will make em bespoke
Need to re-spray my wing mirror covers in the next couple of weeks too, ones a bit dull and the other has a few stone chips in it, dont want em letting the car down after the detail
And finally, been looking into engine conversions lately, my initial plan was a boosted vr but, thanks to Kells, I have made my mind up on the V6 4motion engine  (I think :undecided:) Not gonna bother trying to 4motion it, but thats the engine I got my eyes on, EXCITED

work continues tomo

All comes down to what I can get for the right money really Wayne, A boosted VR is gonna cost somewhere in the region of £2000 doing it myself, The R32 somewhere around the £3000 (If I'm lucky)
But the 4Mo probably around a £1000, plus with some little engine mods and a re-map I can get the 4mo around the 230bhp mark
To be honest I could probably boost the 4mo and fit it for around the same price as the boosted VR but the 4mo is a newer engine and has more valves

Me and my main man Kells started the detail yesterday, we (I should say Kells really, he did nearly all of it, cheers brother ) got my driver door done and my front wing, the driver door had really bad oxidisation on it but has come up brilliant, need to grab some coarser pads this morning cos the roof and bonnett are a lil bit of a state  But, she looks like she's gonna come up nice and SSSHHHHHHHIIIIINNYYYY
Also started the re-furb on the LeMans wheels, they are in a lot of a state, really badly pitted and curbed all round the edge
I'll get some pics up once I've got a bit further with em

Hi
Really like what you have been doing with this car and I think if its ok I'll copy the short shift linkage idea and wheel spacers for mine. Do you have the dimensions of the spacers or did you make up any technical drawings? I can make a set no problem but it would be much easier with tried and tested dimensions. Also if I wanted to make adaptors for say a wider BMW wheel with slightly different bolt spacing, and didn't want them as thick as the say 25-30mm, how would you recommend doing this? I guess for standard VW alloys with a thinner spacer they would just need longer bolts rather than the countersunk method you have used. Obviously the BMW wheels don't line up with the hub so I can't do this. Do you think it is possible to drill and tap another set of holes into the discs, (36 degrees away from the existing VW holes, and use spigot rings?) I have seen this done with Hillman Imps.
Cheers
Adrian

Adapters for BMW will be 5 x 112mm PCD I think, I can send you a drawing over for the ones I made if ya like mate, if you confirm the PCD for the BMW wheels I can put the measurements on the drawing for ya, they will have to be a minimum of 20mm thick to compensate the length of the wheel bolts.

Hey,
Just remembered Hillman Imps have studs not bolts! feel like a complete pratt now for even suggesting the drilled discs as the hubs would need modifying to suit too lol, completely daft idea, don't know what I was thinking, the drilled disc was to convert a drum brake only car to cater for discs, please ignore everything to do with it I even mentioned!

I will find out to confirm 100% on the PCD but the technical drawings would be great (go with 5 x 120 for now, I can always tweak the print outs for the measurements I am after.
The other question really is whether the wheels will even suit the car, I may just make spacers like you have to space out the standard GTI wheels for now.
Thanks
Adrian

I will PM you the drawing over tomorrow mate (left it at work )
The material costs isn't that big really so if your making them yourself you could make some for the standard wheels now, then in the future make some more if needed. They transform the look of the car I think  :smug:

Needles look great Ben :afro:

I'm guessing they are mk4 needles? Did you just tap into the power supply for the leds that illuminate the dials?
Title: Re: Bens Mk3 GTi 8V project
Post by: benvictors on 19 March 2011, 17:46
Thank you, there actually from a mk5, and yes just glued a single, wide angle LED to the underside of the clockface and wired them to the connection blocks on the back of the PCB, the ones the Dial leds push into when you put the clocks back together.
If a few people wanna know how I'll put a how to in the mk3 section

Evening all, just a few quick updates from me
First up my new exhaust
Custom made from cat back with straight through mid section
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/Picture041.jpg)

With Powerflow backbox
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/Picture050.jpg)
Sticks out a bit too far for my liking tho so gonna take an inch of the mid section to push the whole backbox back

Cheers fella's
16v_Blu - Ye just got the stance right but is all gonna change in a month or so once I get my new wheels sorted, will have to change the ride height, the spacing and probably the camber

N900 MJT - I just took off the original one and copied it, never wrote down any sizes (Probably should have done really )
I added about half inch to the length but if I was to make one now I'd probably go a little longer, 20mm maybe

Dom - Cheers man, the meet is at The Old Corn Mill at Brighouse near Huddersfield, first Sunday of every month, normally a really good turn out but this month was a bit scarce
Last Month there was about 40 odd Dubs in the carpark  NICE

Dont get too excited, im only going VR6 til I can afford everything for the V6 24v Turbo
Me an Kells getting dirty again (oo-er) looking at a 3 day turn around so should be fun
I know, i know, "Why dont you just buy a VR"
well i got a full car at a very good price, my car is pretty much how i want it to look, it will cost me less, i dont have the hassle of trying to sell my car and find a new one and it gets me used to the V6 shinnanigans and the fuel bills for next year

Did try convince him to sell all the VR parts and all his parts off his GTI and get the 24v lump but unfortunatly i was unable to get him to . he has seen first hand with my conversion just how much the money can spiral out of hand  :lipsrsealed:

told him to turbo the VR but he wants 24valves and a more modern engine (cant argue with this)

gives us something to do anyhow, feels strange now mine is all done and have the spare time on our hands again

Ok, So I've been a bit lagging in updates since I said I was converting, been trying to get the VR running sweet before I bang it in mine and finally it is  After a bit of cleaning, a bit of painting and a new coilpack she's running sweet............................
Sounds fecking immense
I've painted the engine covers (pics to follow) Had to source a new backbox (Sebring) now just need my new aux belt and a centre box before the weekend.
SO............ Thursday is the day for the tear down, Kells has got his marrigolds on the ready for his crazy OCD cleaning routine on my bay
And hopefully will be getting some rubber for my wheels by the end of the month

Been doing some designs on some centre caps too
First get yourself one of your old sh!tted up centre caps
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/IMG_0819.jpg)

Split it
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/IMG_0820.jpg)

Clean up the plastic bit and prep for paint
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/IMG_0821.jpg)

Paint your desired colour, in my case Graphite Grey
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/IMG_0822.jpg)

Get some VW decals off ebay, cand get em in Red, Black, Blue and Yellow I believe
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/IMG_0823.jpg)

Cut, shout, trim, swear and stick the decals to the caps
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/IMG_0824.jpg)

Then bosh em in ya wheels

It only took us a few days to get my S3 lump in my mk3 and running, and that was a very very involved job coz lots to change with it been a early MK3 3 plus a load of custom bits we had to make up and have made etc - this VR6 converison was ALOT easier. Bolt off bolt on stuff, hard work doing it in a day but hey ho. just off to Bens now to finish up. More pics to come and video of running :-)

WELL...................... Its been an eventful week
Noticed a small oil leak on the VR when the engine was running, on closer inspection it looked as tho it was coming from behind the P/S pump  :undecided:
Anyways, last Wednesday took the front end off the car (AGAIN!!!) gave it a good wipe down, started the engine and had a nosey about.
After a minute I see the drip again so follow it up the block to the oil gallery plug just under the coolant pulley.... its seeping oil......BAR STEWARD!!!!!!!!

Went to work on Thursday and had the excellent idea of doing a temp fix on the plug with some liquid metal, in the meantime Kells ordered me a new plug from VW and they said it would be here Monday, jobs a good un

Set off from work on Thursday night, got about 100 yards and ppsssssshhhhhhhhhh
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/e3a8aa4c.jpg)

OIL EVERYWHERE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Had to get recovered and once home discovered the liguid metal had somehow punctured a hole in the Oil gallery plug
(http://i282.photobucket.com/albums/kk250/djbenvictors/IMG_0923.jpg)

So, VW let me down on Monday, fecking useless!!!
Turned up yesterday so me an Kells had a stab at putting right, managed to get the old plug out with no real issues, putting the new one in..... another story
After lots of swearing and pissing about managed to get it in the hole (oo-er missus) filled her up with oil and started her up.................... Started seeping oil F*CKING B*STARD C**T TW*T SH*TE PR*CK B*LLOCKS
Tried to tap it in a bit further but because you cant get square on to tap it into position properly, I made matters worse, the plug went pop and I got oil in my eyes, mouth and nose.. EXCELLENT.
Me an Kells searched high and low for the plug but couldn't find it so abandoned it all
Kells went home, I came in the house, emptied my pockets and found the plug
It was cream crackered tho so ordered 3 from VW today so should be here tomorrow.
Ive made myself a little 'press' that fits between the plug in question and the chasis arm with a thread on it so I can push the plug in square and hopefully solve this little debacle
VW fest creeping up and me car-less

RIGHT, went to VW last Thursday to pick up my new gallery plugs...... they were the wrong ones
Re-ordered and went to pick them up Friday
I made myself a little fixture at work to get the new plug in so I set about it Friday night.
Managed to get the new plug in nice and square and flush but it still seeped oil
Thought to myself 'Feck it' and proceeded to fill the hole where the new plug sits with liquid metal
I now have no oil leaks
HOWEVER, I think I over filled the engine with oil
Took it for a test drive, let her warm up then opend her up
got to about 6k revs in 3rd and POOOOOFFFFFF.... a MASSIVE cloud of bluey/grey smoke bellowed out of my exhaust
I pulled over sharpish and turned the engine off, had a little snoop about under the hood and aprehensivly turned her over and she started but if I gave her a bit of throttle, more smoke
I limped home and gave her a proper check over, turns out one of my HT leads had popped off, phew!!!!
It was burning oil a little too but that is now sorted aswell
SO, aside from the HUGE screw I've just found in my brand new tyre  All is well in camp 'VR6 Ben Big Bore'

Glad to hear it Stow

Wherry, was going to bolt a Turbo on this year but always had something a little different in mind so I'm just gonna wait til my weddings out of the way (May) then do what I originally intended, VR6 T.............T
2 K03's
Sourced some of the bits already, I have one of my K03's, gonna custom make the outlet manifolds but the engine is going to stay pretty OEM looking, no short inlets or owt silly, wanna keep the engine looking pretty much how it is now.... aside from the 2 turbo's strapped to its back
Getting a custom downpipe made and the lovely lads at Carbon will be taking it on for the mapping, gonna try keep factory management but we will see how that pans out.
350bhp
340ft/lb torque
Quite easily too, theres only a couple of VR6 TT's in the uk and seen a mk2 synchro pushing 480bhp with 440ft/lb torque
INSANE!!!!!!
Looking at slip diff and six speeding the 02A, been looking at an 02S-02A hybrid which looks pretty good.
Exciting but just gotta get this pesky wedding out the way first ha ha

The K03's came on most of the standard 1.8T's, only need small turbo's if your rocking 2 of em ha ha

the weddings killed us for the last year, we both have really big family's so the day is costing a bloody fortune
Will be a good un tho, looking forward to the honeymoon, 2 weeks in Cancun at 'the Royal, Cancun' Jacuzzi in the room and no kids (Our lass is a childminder so this is a mega bonus ha ha)
Also, got the best looking Samba for our wedding car, its Sssscchhweeeeeetttttt

The sex....

KO4s is the audi one then?  can you run these with out changing any internals?

Lovely looking samba, would look lush in your wedding shots....we've got big families too but decided its cheaper to not invite most of them

Wherry, was going to bolt a Turbo on this year but always had something a little different in mind so I'm just gonna wait til my weddings out of the way (May) then do what I originally intended, VR6 T.............T 2 K03's

:undecided: Not going to be easy also not sure why or what the thinking is, one big turbo will give you as much, space wise you are very limited, even if you did get them in all the plumbing needed etc is going to be very tight.

You going to need to change the inlet manifold I think so you can run 2 throttle bodies etc, what ever happens your going to need to drop the compression etc.

gonna try keep factory management but we will see how that pans out.

Standalone management will be your only choice also lets say you do get near 350bhp even with a LSD your going to struggle to get the power down.

Good evening Wayne
Not going to be easy for sure, but why the hell not
Lowering compression is a must, the install will be very tight but very do-able. The inlet manifold can stay, the air box will need moving to the otherside of the bay for the provisions of the FMIC pipework,
summat like this

I will be moving my expansion tank to the airbox side and vice versa, and I wont be using blue pipework ha ha

:undecided: looking at that picture, the things on the front of the inlet manifold what are they, guessing extra injectors?
Title: Re: Bens Mk3 GTi VR6 project
Post by: benvictors on 19 November 2011, 00:29
Not too sure myself tbh  :undecided:
there are very few TT VR6's, so this is the reason I'm wanting to do it. VR6T's or Supercharged are ten a penny now, just about everyone on VR6oc are forced induction now (Apart from Wherry and the Ramrod, sorry boys )
A little change from the norm is what keeps things interesting  :nerd:

Turbo FTW, supercharged VR.s are just WEAK and no torque

don't need much PSI to get big figures.. it will be a monster..  i hear something about gold pipework tho hahahah (Joke)

could use 1 big turbo like the GT28 I'm getting for mine.. but you are looking at £1k for that alone...the twin K03 is something different and maybe something we can supply to other VR6 owners down the line

They are the pipes for a nitrous system. Gas and fuel.

To simplify the pipe work I'd think about a modded short inlet. There's a guy, powernut with the R32T 4x4 caddy that seems to make and weld them for fun. Might be worth a chat.

How's the turbos coming along?

When you converted to VR6, how did you sort the clutch issue out? New pedal box or a conversion thing?

Convrted to Hydro as per normal VR6 and 16v cars have, we used the VR6 clutch and gearbox.. basically full set up from donor car

late mk3s all have same pedal box wit provisions to take hydro set up, early cars like mine don't so need a late pedal box fitting as mine did for my conversion

Or otherwise?

Hello, been a while
Timberland, yes I will be running 1 turbo per 3 cylinders but it wont be happening until the end of the summer now, my wedding is at the end of May so need to get that out of the way before I tackle this project
I will be running 2 x K03 turbo's with twin side mounted intercoolers, i will be relocating the washer bottle to the opposite side of the bay (mk4 bottle) and running a cone filter a lal F17BAD.
The intercooler pipework is going to be fun to get looking right as I'm keeping the existing VR throttle body and intake/plenum, Im not going to use an aftermarket short intake, pipework aside, I want to keep the bay looking as oem as possible.

I have been busy over the last couple of weeks tho getting little bits an bats sorted

Pic heavy update to follow

Gone for a satin steel type look for the rim, no paint but not quite polished

Had to drill out the smapped bolt and damaged the thread in the rim so came up with the idea of re-tapping bigger and making a bolt

Machined the head of a standard high tensile hex head bolt

Got myself a 2.9 intake for the princely sum of £10.50

Along with a spare throttle body for £5.00 which I boshed straight on the machine to port

Port matched the OBD2 throttle body to the OBD1 2.9 intake,

However, the holes to mount them together are in different places so I set about making an adapter/spacer plate

Had to mark up the intake for the new holes

Drilled

Shaun, second time that hose as split on me in the last month   first time it spkit near the connection so i managed a repair, the rubber on it does feel funny thi, engine getting re-built before the turbo application anyhow so hopefully should see me through til then if it is a head gasket fault.
Im lucky I can use the machines at work when I want  :smug:
Gonna go hunting for the 200bhp mark for the summer, i was pushing 184.5bhp with de-cat only so the bigger intake with port matched tb and straight through 2 1/2" Jetex should push me to around 190, and im gonna try out one of them chips for the ecu, heard good reports on the 8 an 16v so hopefully i will be impressed to

The silver part of the engine cover is going gold to match the inlet/plenum aswell as the aux belt tensioner and the top of the fuel pressure reg, pretty much anything you can see that is silver/chrome is going gold

Also, im running my standard throttle body until the weekend because Brad forgot to bring our Vag-com at the weekend and the new port matched t/b needs aligning

Looks really good Ben!

Dunno why people think its marmite tbh, its quite a subtle gold so not overpowering and in your face like a scooby gold. Looks really good and doesn't look out of place next to the Red.

Ok, I've picked up my new engine, gearbox, got both my turbo's re-furbed, other bits and bobs, 2 x smic with some pipework, so thought I would sling some pics and ideas up

First up my turbo's next to my head that I'm stripping and porting

I removed the valves from the head, which is from a 70,000 miles auto so is pretty mint anyways, and give them a damned good clean and polish

Went from this

I will be fabricating my outlet manifolds up over the next few weeks, once I have the flanges lazor cut I will then port match the head to the flanges and polish em up nice an shiny. Gonna make 2 x tubular manifolds so one turbo per 3 cylinders

I think I've worked out the pipework routes so I can leave the bay looking pretty oem......ish, I want to keep the original plenum but the original air box will have to be removed so will be running a cone filter, everything else should stay exactly where it is

Also got some new 16" rims to go on, they need paint and rubber tho so will be a couple of weeks, watch this space  :smug: :smug:

Think you're gonna struggle for room with the standard inlet on, whilst running boost pipes to front of car then back on themselves to enter TB at back of engine. Plus the long runner manifold isn't best suited to FI.

Although possible, won't be the best to work on.

Assuming with the 2 intake manifolds, you will be running 2 separate throttle bodies?  :undecided:

Morning all
I know what yr saying about the space issue Russ, the K03-011 which im using are not the most ideal units for this application, I would have been better with the K03's from a transverse 1.8t as the housings are more compact but the internals are basically the same, hindsight is a wonderful thing tho.
Im going to be running 2 smics ala S3 style so will be routing the pipework similar to that, obviously i will be running 1 smic per turbo
I realise the VR plenum isnt exactly ideal for a turbo application, the 2.9 obd1 style that i have is considerably better than the obd2 plenum but still, I know a modified short intake would be a better option, but My aim is to keep it looking as oem as possible in the bay.

DCmk3, im running 2 x outlet manifolds, not 2 x inlet manifolds

And cheers Junior, its gonna be an interesting build for sure

Post by: DCmk3 on 17 November 2012, 12:54
Oh yea, my bad my bad.
So the boost from both turbos are going through their own smic's, then joining to a single inlet?
Title: Re: Bens Mk3 GTi VR6, Twin Turbo build is starting
Post by: tshirt2k on 17 November 2012, 13:06
I've seen one on the web similar Not with those turbos tho. It looks a bit cramped.  You'll probably have to cut the outlets.

rallye twin turbo (http://mk2vr6.com/board/viewtopic.php?f=17&t=8050)

Can't see why you're using those smic's tho. Won't get much airflow to them and you would still have to join them across the front. They arent even that effiicient, and have plastic end caps.

An fmic would be better and would involve less work.

Are you trying to save money??  money saved would only cost you more in time.
Title: Re: Bens Mk3 GTi VR6, Twin Turbo build is starting
Post by: benvictors on 19 November 2012, 17:46
DCmk3, yep

I'm not trying to save money, just trying to keep everything as oem as possible, dont really want a fmic as you can see them and I want to keep the car looking stock (ish lol)
Dont forget im not going to have the need to run massive boost, I'm not after crazy power, I could easily achieve the power I'm after with a single turbo
'so why twins then?' I hear you ask!!
Why not?!? would be my reply       :smug:

Cheers for the comments guys, much appreciated
However, the Twin build is gonna take even longer than anticipated, I have pretty much everything mechanical now and most of the stuff to re-build my second engine but me an the wife are having a baby  so funds are gonna have to be tightened
Plus I have just sourced some CC Recaro's that I need to get re-trimmed (they are green lol)
And im doing a cusstom 2 seat rear bench (based on............ what you reckon????)
Also the dreaded rust is starting to poke through in quite a few places now so need to get that sorted quick sharp.

In other news I recently services the old girl and had a little go, up against a mk5 GTI, which managed to get awY in 1st and 2nd but I started reeling it back in half way up 3rd, quite impressed with the lardy old tart lol

Watch this space for my custom interior, gonna be sweeeeeeeeeeetttt!!!

Title: Re: Bens Mk3 GTi VR6, Twin Turbo build is starting SLOWLY
Post by: benvictors on 28 January 2013, 21:27
^^ Got it in one pal, the Rado bench it is, and before you all start, I am well aware that it doesn't fit properly, but I have a plan to resolve this issue so dont worry bout that.
The bench will be re-trimmed in black to match the front Recaro's and the centres will be done in the mk6 GTI cloth check, I really wanted the Interlagos cloth but you cant get it anymore so im happy with the mk6 cloth, the main man MJ will be doing this for me, happy days
