Title: Mk2 golf 1.3 performace camshaft
Post by: jimmyhodge on 01 October 2010, 09:57
(Ok i've posted this in the wanted section as well but putting it on here just to get a few more views.)

Ok guys been speaking in depth to kent cams and the like regarding performance camshafts for the mini golfs. They no longer do them but used to supply/produce them untill demand dropped so they removed them from stock.
I'm trying to track down a performance camshaft for my mini Golf if anyone knows of or has one hanging around that they'd be willing to sell i'd really aprietiate it. I know its probably not worth doing and i've had several critics about tuning a 1.3 but its different and I fancy the challenge  smiley

"mini golf" that's a new one on me.  As an owner of a 1.3 I have to say "what's the point" all you are Doing is wasting Money making a car go from "very slow" to "slow".

i used to have a 1.3, what you need is a twin choke weber carb. it will help increase MPG and be more reliable than pierburg.

i had this along with a full s/s exhaust and it sounded the nuts. very quick between the lights go kart style!!!
not too much you can do on the 1.3 but this is worth doing.

Wouldn't it be a cheaper to get an 8v GTI engine and lump that in??, and obviously the gains would be a hell of a lot more noticeable

I think Polo G40 camshafts are a decent and compatible upgrade for the golf mk2 1.3 engine.

Oh and yes, a weber carb will make a huge difference.

To be honest, not worth trying to make it quicker.

Make it handle better, thatd make it feel faster than a cam.

Of course there is a point, im sure its great fun trying to get more power out of a 1.3 as long as your not piling too much into it.

It's a dumb f*cking idea.

Get a proper engine to start with.

To be fair..... any 'big block' VW engine over and above a 1.3.

Even a 1.6 with a GTI head, cam and DIY porting job on it....

Ok i've been through this all to many times. I own a 1.6 gti. Yes its fast yes its quicker and always will be but its no fun! I might as well just go out and get sheep tattooed on my forehead. . . No offence guys. I just fancy a challenge. Simple as that.

I've already got a twin choke webber on it. I've also removed the old sh**ty inlet manifold and sectioned it into two and ported and polished it and welded it back together. That made hella difference.

The costs up to now are pretty low just because i've sourced a twin choke off my mate, and the manifold I did in work in my lunch hour and stayed on to weld her up

Just fancied chucking a cam in it now to see how much difference that makes. Gonna make my own exhaust system 4 into 2 into 1 when I get a spare weekend out of stainless.

I aprietiate you opinion guys but I want to keep the 1.3 a 1.3 and the 1.6 a 1.6. Simple as that...

"mini golf" that's a new one on me.  As .

Just something I named it,probably completly incorrect butJust an easy way to discribe the 1.3 golf

On a 1.3 a cam is going to make little or no difference as you really need headwork with bigger valves.
Title: Re: Mk2 golf 1.3 performace camshaft
Post by: jimmyhodge on 02 October 2010, 09:50
Ok fair enough. So even if the head is reworked, polished and ported. DIY job would you still say the eprformance gains would be limited?

Yep as the port sizes etc are small.

ah I see the usual people are being as helpful as ever!!!

The polo G40 camshaft is not usable. The 1.3 Golf has a mechanical fuel pump driven from the cam.....

Is your head hydraulic or solid tappet? as this will make a difference to the camshaft best for your application....

Club Polo is your friend with this....not many folks on here know or understand the 1.3 engine

Your best off getting the block decked and upping the compression to about 11.5:1.
Get the FW lightened and the crankshaft knife-edged.
Go on german Ebay and get an inlet manifold from a GK engine.
High compression pistons from a Polo GT

What Bhp are you targeting? There's a NA 1.3 i've heard with 145hp at the FW!!

You're wrong there....

The 1.3 is a far better engine than the 1.6......and has more tuning potential

Believe it or not the 1.1 engine is better still, as it has a shorter stroke, and can be bored out making the bore lager than the stroke....very revvy and much fun

Good luck with it! Has to be well worth a go- potential for a decent power to weight ratio!

Im no authority on tuning, but is it not possible to re-profile the existing cam/followers for mild benefit?

The resent above comments made me smile! Exactly what I wanted to hear...
So basically I just need to do my research, Is there any specialists about thats best to talk too? Names etc etc?

Not sure on what power I want it was more of a case of seeing if its possible

Will go on club polo then and have a word with a few people on there and see if i get anywhere. Thanks guys really aprietiate the imformation.

Your still missing the big big point, a Polo is lighter than a Golf mk2 and it is hard to fit bigger engines hence tuning the 1.3, in a Golf what is the point of spending money for little gain when you can drop a 1.6 or 1.8 in and gain much more.

Sorry to be harsh but tuning the 1.3 is 100% pointless and a waste of time and money.

If you really want to make it quicker as has been said drop a 1.6, run a webber carb and you will see worthwhile gains.

I would guess being FSI means major work / headache with the wiring.

Have seen a mk2 with a 1.4 16v lump fitted.

Haaa thats just another word for challenge!  I've heard the FSI's are pretty good on fuel, with that in mind I would transplant the whole lot, if I could get the dash to fit in well?

Although I appreciate this is a Golf GTI forum, it is still created and frequented by people who have a passion for engines, in particular VW golf engines. I find most of the detailing stuff on here completely pointless, but realise it's not my bag so don't comment....

Jimmyhodge....go for it....I'm sure it would be possible to reach around 135-140bhp

Sorry but I have passion for engines, built a few when I had my Mini and still like old fashioned ways of tuning which is sadly becoming a thing of the past, 2 points I feel the need to go over..

1) What is the point of making or trying to make a 1.3 quicker when you can just put a bigger / better engine in unless as per a few threads of late it is all down to insurance, (not telling them springs to mind :lipsrsealed:).

2) I would love to know how the hell you get 135 to 140bhp out of a 1.3 and yet it is still ok for day to day driving, my 1293 Mini was at times undriveable with a hot cam etc.

It is at the end of the day your car and choice and if you had a Polo I could understand but not on a Golf.

1) because you can...the 1.3 has a far better head than the 1.6, which some are suggesting is used. (the 1.3 is a cross flow head unlike the 1.6.)

2) off the top of my head....deck the block to get to 11.5:1 CR, Polo GT rods and pistons, enlarged valves, 320 odd degree cam, and custom throttle bodies and a large chunk of money to get it set up

or you could try mating the AFH cylinder head up with stand alone injection....

Plenty of ways to go and you can go the custom route (as most of the European tuners have gone) or the scrap yard route......

I'm sick and tired of hearing people say drop a bigger engine in! So if we were all sheep there would be a huge amount of big engined cars, then a huge amount of completely standard cars....Nothing in between. The guy wants to modify his 1.3 engine, he is asking for advice on how to make the 1.3 more powerful, not advice about should he drop a bigger engine in. I think people need to focus on the original thread title and stick by it, yes say it might be worthwhile dropping a bigger engine in for the simplest way of getting power, but there's no need to gang rape the guy and bombard him with info he doesn't want. I'm sure he knows it would be better to put a bigger engine in.

Look guys I never wanted to upset anyone on here. I own a very nice 1.6 driver with a fair bit of snort under the bonnet and like I originally said yes it goes well but I simply want to do something different.
I don't want to go out and tattoo sheep on my forehead and I fancy the challenges of modifying my 1.3 to the point of where it will kick my 1.6 driver to the ground. I don't want it to be one of these my car does 130mph ! Whats the point, you'll only lose your licence...

The idea of tuning my 1.3 is that being a 1.3 it will rev, revs means power etc etc. I've tuned motorcycles in the past and yes you'll get more power from a bigger bike but i've always found that the smaller capacity's will produce that power in a much more how do I put this nutt crunching way. More exciting and I won't be hiding anything from the insurers! Again whats the point!

I apprietiate everyone's feedback on here but I havn't asked what engine to fit to mine have I? I just wanted to know some info on wether its possible to tune the 1.3 engine and the answer is yes its very possible. Now i'm not made of money who is in this world we are living in at the moment but nothings stopping me trying is there...

No matter what you tell me i'm still going to try and get a nice figure of power out of my little golf,i'm not going to fit a larger engine,i'm not gonna spend my yearly earnings on the thing and i'm not going to be a sheep!

Right back to the question at hands if people can get over the fact I don't want a bigger engine.

Who can I talk to regarding bigger valves etc etc and cams? Any experts in the field about? Decking the head and getting hold of some high comp pistons shouldn't be to big an issue but anyone know a stockist?

Kniff edging the crank, who do people use?

Anyone able to help?

If I continue to get abuse about tuning my wee 1.3 I will remove myself from the forum, just a shame so many people are turning into sheep, especially you mini owners, jeez my mate has a little 1380 mini and he'll spend a day trying to eeeekkk 1/2 a horse outa the little girl just because he can! Thats how it should be!

Just a misunderstanding here thats all Jim I'm all for getting a few more horses the cheapest way you can!
But the post does suggest increase in BHP for value for money, and TBH reliability is another issue ontop of the insurance? They have stayed on topic for one reason you mentioned increase in horse power just they are trying to save you money hence dropping a larger lump already tried and tested i.e 1.6-1.8 lumps? But hey IMO porting the sh!t out of a 1.3 does leave questions out there for the lobes, piston conrods rings, oil pumps etc... on reliability...? Which is why I said it would be kool to drop a FSI 1.4 still small block, but a very revvie vtec style of engine to give you better rev range and BHP.
It would be a shame to see you go, but TBH they have gone easy on you......... :lipsrsealed:

To be fair I have looked at those FSI 1.4 engines before. Super charged and turbo at the same time very very tempting! Nothings out of the question at the moment its still very very early days and I have even began to solidify my plans. The only thing that put me off those FSI engines is I can't really find much info on them. Wiring diagrams etc etc. I believe its the same engine they fitted to some Scoda's? Corect me if i'm wrong. . .
I just want to do something different, not follow trends and to experiment a little.

I'll agree though with wayne, those 320 cams are undrivable on the road, you have to pretty much grow an extra foot to keep the thing going at traffic lights and this is really not what i'm after. More the case of purring but powerful.

It may be possible to tune the 1.3 but like you're saying how reliable will it actually be... :undecided:

FYI - the FSI engines are Fuel Stratified Injection. They only actually operate at this condition for very finite amounts of time, not consistently. Thus it's just like any other conventional engine.

They would be a ball ache to fit as they are constantly electronically monitored throughout the loading conditions to control the inlet tract to the engine, and also the injection periods and timings.

Fair point but you fitted a 16v when you could have made your 8v faster but lets be honest it made sense.

My 8v engine was getting tired and starting to need more than just modifications.

So a cam from a HH engine (mk1/2 Polo) will fit and is a slight upgrade. The GK engine had this cam and was a 1.3 75BHP standard engine (Largely due to the CR (11:1) but the same cam is also in mk1 and 2 Polos engine code HH.....but to be honest, that cam aint gonna do much/nothing on its own....Shrick would be your best bet for a cam but you could get a custom one ground to your own spec....

Are you setting up a project thread....?? I had this idea about 7 years ago but was shot down in flames by many a folk, but after this discussion it's all starting to flood back!!

The polo G40 camshaft is not usable. The 1.3 Golf has a mechanical fuel pump driven from the cam.....

Isn't the fuel pump driven by the intermediate shaft like in the big block engines?

Want to make a 1.3 "quick" as apposed to "fast", throw away all the weight you can, if you can't throw it away do they make a lighter version?

Think Berg Cup, some of those engines are bonkers (don't know how much fun they'd be in stop start traffic mind) but a quick google turned up the following....

Nope early 1.3 carb engines had a fuel pump driven off the cam.

Will contact shrick... see what they can do on a cam

Anyone got any recommendations to people to use for porting etc etc?

Havn't set up a project thread as of yet but closer to the desision on what i'm gonna do I will probably do one just as it seems no one else has bothered,Which is making me want to do it even further.

This GK manifold, anyone know where I can find one... I've search high and low for one and never come acrossone, abit like the lock ness monster... hahahaha

My cam defintly drives my fuel pump but this isn't an issue in the slightest, you'd just remove the mechanical jobber and put an electronic one in its place....

ebay.de......the engine was only available in Germany I believe.....Or you could try to copy it by enlarging the ports on your existing inlet manifold

I've been looking on there alreayd but nothing seems to come up... stupid question no doubt but will they list it as a GK manifold or do I just have to risk buying one and see how it comes?

Ha yer had a look some of those sorg engines are an engineers dream! Cbr1000 heads on 1.3 bottom ends... I'm guessing they must have machined the pistons to allow for a 16valve head on there, thats my guess anyway. And then the cambelt route! Wow! I wish I could do that imagine that in a small golf

Could concider doing a 16valve conversion, wouldn't be out of the question. . . Would defintly be up that different street would it not,

Cylinder head from a polo AFH  (1.4 16V) engine bolts up (I THINK. Could someone confirm this??) You've then got a few more options on fuel systems....

You will need a later block, easier to fit the complete lump.

If the cylinder from a AFH polo 16v did match up to 1.3 lowers then that would be ideal... Can anyone confirm this then?

I think it does. The AFH head will go straight onto a mk3 ABU block, and I've seen an ABU head on a 1.3 mk2 golf...does that make any sense?? I think the condition is the position of the combustion chamber...

The chamber is in the head on the AFH, so you need to make sure your pistons haven't got a CC in or your compression ratio will be shot.....

Easy way to tell if you have early or later type engine is the rocker cover.

Early is held on with bolts around the edge, later type has 3 bolts in the center.

Superlight body panels, 13in sticky rubber, wee 16v screamer, could be a bit of a giggle. If you decide to start a build thread, post a link as would be interested in your progress. I tuned my 1.6 Driver to keep up with GTi's and leave them for dead in the twisties, but I'm older now and have opted for a dirty three letter engine code in my current Golf

the easyest way to get a 1300 to go is going to be boost, ether an eaton M45 or a rinky dinky turbo.

if you want to go the NA it's gonna cost.  but have dne simalar type engine when you have a rule book that says your not allowed a bigger motor ( only time i've ever botherd )

1) get a soild lifter cyl head if possible and the Volumetric efficency of the cylinder head up LOTS    cut the bottom of the valve guides off, try cut the valce seats,  trim as much metal off the valves as you dare and polish them.

2) then get the inlet sorted  id say ITBS but budget wil say bike carbs try get the inlet run about 350mm  from mouth of trumpet to valve (iirc)
3) sort the exhaust primaries twice as long as secondaries   can provide the formulas for working out lenths of runners to work with cam if you wish
4) no cams avalible have yours reprofiled and fit uprated valve springs  if you go long dration like 320 degrees you need to get the compression up LOTS 11.5 is not enough you need custom psitons and 14 or 15:1
5) programable ignition std dizzy advance curve wont work for that motor

as for building 13 revs monsters with hydralic tappet heads it won't happen  you'll get to about 8000 rpm and the tappets will say f**k off and pump up

If I fit the 16valve head off a polo mk3 I believe its a solid lift cam is it not?

Throttle bodies... how can I control these as I have no ECU on the 1.3... I'm ok on the mechanics of things just electrics im not so hot on yet... ideas anyone?

Also quick question i've been told and taught many of times how to work out the compression ratios of a cylinder, can someone remind me how it is worked out again... Daft question I know but its been a very very long time since I worked out this...

For the guys that are interested I will do a build thread, the main project won't start till the new year as I am going away traveling in the next few weeks and upon my return I will strip my spare 1.3 engine and begin

Anyone with info on things such as piston suppliers, cam suppliers, porters tuners I can speak to in the mean time before I start this project please let me know as im going to do my research before I start such a project. I don't want to get half way through only to find out I can't get a piston or something stupid...

compresson ratios.

static cr in most basic terms the ratio how much the total volume of a cylinder changes between tdc and bdc.

to work out your cr you need to know the swept volume of cylinder, if the piston is domed or dished and the volume of said dme or dishm and the volume of the combustion chamber of cyl head.

cr is.   swept volume / combustion chamber volume + volume of piston dish or dome + volume of gasket space
