Hit a pothole tonight, didn't see it and now have a bulge in the tyre wall.
I take it the tyre is scrap
Only 5000 miles on it, probably going to have to buy two now..
-
http://www.potholes.co.uk/ (http://www.potholes.co.uk/) get your claim in. The more folk that claim the better.
-
Forms downloaded and will fill them in once I get the invoice from the tyre fitters
Luckily the Alloy survived..
-
Yeh, the tyre is knackered. You'll need a new one unfortunately
-
Bloody potholes and its only summer..... that's why I've just invested in a set of winter wheels.
-
Yea it's so annoying and frustrating..
Maybe I should just go and buy a Landrover..
-

So sorry to hear this.
Which make of tyre? Dunlops I see.
See, how tough the Monza Shadows are. :smug:
Would not have happened if you had a reversing camera.
-
Definitely wouldn't have happened if I had Xenons..
-

Hmmm .... Don't be too sure. Those potty holies are clever buggers.
I always pay attention to the body movement of the car in front as one form of precaution.
-
You must have given it a hell of a whack to snap the steel reinforcing and egg the tyre! Might be an idea to have the steering and suspension checked over.
-
The Dunlops are a very strong tyre, you must have it that hole pritty hard to get the tyre like that. Glad your alloy is ok , but get your ball joints checked too!! I have dunlops on mine also hit a couple of pot holes recently but no damage done thank god!

I have to disagree here. The dunflops have a very weak side wall in my experience. Not suprised if I am honest.

I suppose what I ment was they are hard wearing but not the best tyres Gilly , never been able to shread them yet so that I can get new one's

Defo agree with that. The set i have on mine had been used by Neil.. maybe a couple of 1000 miles, I am now pushing 15k+ and they still wont wear!!! thats with me trying!

Thats excellent milage mate bloody hell !! Ive never had that out of any tyres???
-
Speed was about 45-50, didn't seem like a bad impact, I have had worse and got away with it.
Going to stick a couple of Michelin PS3s on, had the PS2s on the last car and was impressed with them..

Good choice of tyre them , cant go wrong with michys

You don't have to snap the metal...all you need to do it deflect the sidewall enough to partially rupture the layers, letting air from inside get between the layers - as it has in this case.
I had exactly the same the winter before last - scrap tyre time!
-
Have you thought of the Pirelli's?
Nice and quiet.

I don't suppose any of the MK6 owners need new tyres yet [unless you've had a puncture or hit a pothole] But has anyone used Pirelli P Zero's? Jason Plato reckons they are the best tyres around [for what that's worth, probably a lot actually]
-
They are a good tyre but you would be lucky to see 10000 miles on one set..]
Maybe if you do a lot of Motorway driving.
My driving is 95% A and B roads, the B roads being pothole hell at the moment
-
It's about time the roads over here were all tidied up!
Sorry to hear what happened. I buckled a wheel earlier in the year but the tyre survived.
On a separate note, I drove on a run-flat on the last car I had. This was the result -
(http://img693.imageshack.us/img693/7126/photoqq.jpg) (http://img693.imageshack.us/i/photoqq.jpg/)
It happened 200 miles from home with no spare wheel so I had to just drive on. I might not have stuck to the 50mph limit though :embarassed:
-
From what i remember... TT did have anything nice to say about the P Zero's. He ran them on his RS4 and said they were the worst tyres he had used. :undecided:
-

Unfortunately, as I only do approximately 6000 miles per year, I am stuck with the noisy Bridgestones for the life of the car!

Seriously I have not had any road noise with my Bridgestones, mind you I am not running at 6000 miles on them yet.
-
I would suggest you take your wheel off and check the inside edge of the Alloy as thats the weak spot due to lack of support.
You may but probably have flattened the edge slightly.
You may not be able to see it yourself but if you can get the car on a two post wheels free ramp and you spin the wheel round it shows up well then. The amount i have seen like that in the past 5 years is why im not a huge fan of low profile tyres and massive wheels.
-
Got the tyres fitted today and checked the rims, no damage on inside either
They told me I should get the alignment checked as well
Now they have adjusted it the car is pulling to the left and the steering wheel isn't straight, it was fine before..
Why did I let them near it..

None of these tyre companies have a clue how to do tracking. They are worse than useless. I had endless problems with Kwikfit when I had a Focus. Bunch of baboons. Took it back 8 times and they made it progressively worse. Eventually, the Ford dealership sorted it in 30 minutes.
Hope you get it sorted. Must be driving you nuts. Sometimes, less is more fortunately or unfortunately. :undecided:
-
That's what worries me, if I take it back will they be able to sort it.
I have three options.
1. Take it back until they sort it out (if possible)
2. Go back tomorrow say they have made a hash of the car and get a refund.
3. Take it to the dealer I bought the car from and hopefully they can sort it.
I know on my MK5 the dealer had to replace the steering rack under warranty, the car needed a full alignment afterwards and they left it perfect.

Give them one more chance. Check it immediately. If it's still hopeless, then get a refund and go to the dealer. What a 'mare.
As Steve asked, who were the cowboys? We need to know to avoid them like the plague.

Seriously I have not had any road noise with my Bridgestones, mind you I am not running at 6000 miles on them yet.
I was beginning to think I was the only one happy with Bridgestones.
-
I think you are safe enough, They are in Northern Ireland, A1 Tyres, Dromore.
I have no complaints about their tyre fitting, they are always very careful with the alloys and I will use them again.
But if I ever need wheel alignment checked in the future I will ask the dealer..

'Specialist' or dealer.
Sorry you have to endure this.
-
No problem, I'm sure I'll get it sorted tomorrow and then run in my new rubber
They are a tyre specialist WEB SITE HERE (http://www.aonetyres.co.uk/)
They have the latest 8-sensor Corghi Wheel Alignment System which looks very impressive but then you have to know how to use it..

Exactly. Get their 'expert' to re-do it.

I can smell smoke, smells like it's coming from a smith & wesson (gunslingers)
-
I totalled not just a tyre but an alloy on my Peugeot, winter before last. While I was sitting by the roadside waiting for the RAC, a council lorry stopped and asked if I was OK. On hearing my tale, they said they were on their way to fill the pothole in.
I didn't realise I could have claimed for that. It was quite expensive, too.
Rolfe. Who finds the Bridgestones OK too.
-
The Ditch and the Duck!
Just adore your posts.

But has anyone used Pirelli P Zero's? Jason Plato reckons they are the best tyres around
Had a set of 18" P Zero Rosso's on my Alfa. Stuck like glue in the wet and dry but lasted all of 8500 miles. And I'm not a hard driver!

Did you consider them to be low on road roar?
The Pirelli Cinturato P7s are supposed to be excellent all rounders. Low wear and noise and very good wet and dry grip.
-
Here are the results for 18" on a 'rocco.
http://www.tyrereviews.co.uk/Article/2010-Auto-Zeitung-Ultra-High-Performance-Summer-Tyre-Test.htm
-
Did you consider them to be low on road roar
Not really, one of the biggest issues I had with the Alfa was tyre noise from the 18"ers. As I knew the Alfa was going I replaced the fronts with Falken 452's and they were a lot quieter than the P Zeros. A lot of the Alfa guys complained about tyre noise and poor wear characteristics with the Pirellis

No, I'm also very happy with my Bridgestone's; of course like most of you, not had another make of tyre on the car for comparison.
-
I'll begin to love and care for my Bridgesones more than usual from now onwards. No more gripes.

Anyway, I'm stuck with my Bridgestones which will probably be hardly worn after 3 years and a max of 18,000 miles of my gentle driving.
....... i.e if I don't have a blow-out!

yes ive had 4 sets of front tyres as i do drive my car like its stolen, For anything remapped the Pilot sport 3 are the way to go, Im out handleing far more exotic cars on a sunday night racing mine at Junction 27 on the m1, And its all about the grip. I get alot less wheelspin even with the remap then i did on other branded tyres. Ide never buy anything different on my golf again.
-

Yep, made in Eastern Europe, not France.........
Had PS3's, not bad but nothing special and crap tread depth from new. Vredestein Sessantas on now, very impressed, better than the Michys.
-
nice!!!
think i wil stick to the goodyears
-
Here we go , f1's are rubbish imo ESP in the winter sub zero temptures !! :lipsrsealed:
-
Got my alignment checked again and now the car is pulling to the right
Got my money back but in fairness to A1 they are concerned at why their alignment system is not working and have asked for the dealer readings.
They were going to call the engineer in who calibrates the machine to come down and explain and have said they are keen to sort it out.
Going to the dealer on Wednesday to see how that goes.
I have the PS3s on now have instantly noticed the extra wet grip at low speed when pulling away.
I had the Goodyears on the MKV and found them excellent too, just thought the PS2s were slightly better.
One thing I noticed about the Goodyears was my fuel consumption was worse by about 5-10%
-

I wouldn't expect them to be.
They are a summer tyre.
No summer tyre is good in the cold...if they are, then they are compromised when hot, in summer.
Come November, I shall remove the 19" wheels and fit some 18"s with Vredestein Wintrac Extremes on, with the correct compound and tread pattern for winter grip.
Job done...
-
Come November, I shall remove the 19" wheels and.....
......give them to Kenny

I was thinking more along the lines of "I shall remove the 19" wheels, clean them up, apply numerous coats of Poorboys Sealant and store them on my wheel rack, in the lovely VW wheel bags I have, until the crappy Scottish winter passes"
Does that work for you Kenny?

Should move away from the highlands to the sunny west coast! Sunshine alllll year round
Plus it would mean I could jack your car up and whip your wheels off and leave you with a set of standard monzas

Sunny?
Last time I went to Glasgowshire it cost me a set of wiper blades.
Sunny...ha!

Standard 18" standard monzas ?
I have a set of those with delivery miles on...in wheel bags, on my wheel rack!
Next to a set of anthracite powder coated 8" x 18" BBS CHs with my winter tyres on, also in wheel bags on my wheel rack...
-
Might I be so bold and ask: How many sets of wheels do you have?
I've got one set and they are on my car. :embarassed:
4 sets?
-
Might I be so bold and ask: How many sets of wheels do you have?

4 sets?
Well, since you ask...
For the Mk6:
4 x 7.5"x18" Monza Shadows, with standard tyres.
4 x 8"x18" Anthracite powder coated BBS CHs with winter tyres.
4 x 8"x18" Anthracite powder coated BBS CHs (spares).
4 x 8.5"x19" VW Racing wheels with Goodyear Eagle F1 summer tyres on.
4 x *coming soon*
For my Mk3 Anniversary:
4 x 7"x16" BBS RXIIs with Toyo T1R - summer.
4 x 7"x16" BBS RXIIs with Toyo R888 - trackday.
4 x 7"x16" BBS RXIIs - spare.
4 x 7"x16" BBS RXIIs - spare.
(all re-furbished and powder coated)
There's the odd spare alloy here and there too...nothing of any significance.
I have issues...I know. :lipsrsealed:
-
I've just slapped myself a number of times after reading your post.
I'm going to read it again and happy-slap myself.

I have so many, I had to have a wheel rack built.
I have now 'outgrown' my wheel rack...and have just commissioned an extension to be fabricated, to give me more space.

All so neat and tidy.
I bet your cars are immaculate before and after a drive whatever the weather.
Any other nuggets for us?

From one OCD sufferer to another may i ask how much are the wheel bags ?

Power66 on German eBay. Great service!
I think I have 4 sets and all have been delivers quickly.
£30ish.
They are a genuine VW part, but I've not tried to see if we can order them over here.

Of course. Did you expect anything else?

Naturally. Isn't everybody's?
Any other nuggets for us?
Like what?
My vast detailing product collection?
My vast - and perfectly laid out - tool collection?
My oh-so-neatly wired garage?
My uber neat air compressor installation?
Hell, I even have a TV in my garage.
Do I spend too much time pottering about in there?
Probably.

Ess_Three:
You use the VWR ones in the summer and the BBS wheels in the winter. You've got a spare set of BBS wheels and you possibly need a spare set of VWR wheels. Just for insurance.
You should sell the Monza Shadows as you don't seem to ever use them.
It is strange to live in the wilderness and I perfectly understand your harmless and very interesting fetish.
Good on you!
Very, very interesting and I really enjoyed this afternoon of posts from you. I am sure there is more than just an overriding interest in alloys. Take care.

I do. But there are only 6 sets in the UK.
I'll have to speak very nicely to my friends at VW Racing methinks.
I have spare BBS to make sure I have a spare if I kerb one, or bend one.
You should sell the Monza Shadows as you don't seem to ever use them.
I will sell the car with those on as they are pristine.

It's not the wilderness you peasant!
I am 17 miles from the Oil Capital of Europe...perfectly located for my chosen career.
The only true part of your statement is the fact that within 1 hour I can be up in the Cairngorm National Park and in the true wilderness, on some of the finest driving roads in the UK.
Very, very interesting and I really enjoyed this afternoon of posts from you. I am sure there is more than just an overriding interest in alloys. Take care.
Glad you approved...it's better than driving this Oil Platform which is what I'm supposed to be doing today, and for the next week and a half.
-
Where you hail from is supposed to be the dryest in the UK. So less car cleaning issues.
I bet you get cheap petrol being in the business!
-
Ess_Three..... That is some wheel collection you've got there. I was wondering just how the hell you store them all until I saw the picture of your garage. Your garage is absolulatly brilliant mate. I amazed, great Work. It looks cleaner than a F1 Garage!! Well when your free next, your more than welcome to come and sort my garage out :smiley
p.s. I saw those wheel covers on ebay the other day and was thinking of getting them. Now I've seen them in the flesh I shall definatly be getting some.
-
We've really hijacked mike.'s thread.
Sorry mike..
Hope your tracking issues get solved soon. So annoying, time consuming and quite unnecessary.

They are superb.
The lass that sells them speaks good English and is super helpful.
The bags velcro together and tighten up with nylon straps with plastic buckles - nothing to damage alloys!
They have handles to let you carry them about.
They have a wee pouch for centre caps / wheel bolts etc....and are marked for which location on the car they go.
All done, they are top notch. Recommended.

Worth the hijack. What-the-hell.
This is so interesting.
Wow, that is someplace. Most impressed and gobsmacked!
Thanks for the wonderful pictures.

No problem, I'm just looking at that garage

Great detailing gear there mate
-
Thanks for additional great pictures of your garage...... wow so
However I'm disapointed about the TV in the first picture. I really think you should look at changing it for a 50" plasma or someththing
mike, sorry also for highjacking your tyre thread. Hope you got it sorted and there was no damage to the car as such.
-

This is so sad...
But if I could find a way of getting an HDMI cable down from the house loft mounted HDMI distribution amplifiers, I would have something far better.
I am lining up a HD 32" to go in there....but space is limited, so nothing bigger than a 32"
Sadly, it'll still be fed via co-ax (I have a magic eye to change the Sky channels) until I manage to work out a route for the HDMI cable...I know my HDMI amp will drive a 15m HDMI in full HD, I just need to find a path into the garage through various walls!
See...I said it was sad...
-
Great detailing gear there mate
You have to, haven't you?
-
Man, that's some garage set up!
Seeing a garage so tidy makes me feel guilty - I'm going to have to go and tidy mine up now! I must say I like your idea of the compressor and air line tucked up above. I'm going to have to think about something like that for the future. There's no fears of you running out of electrical power points, I bet the lights in other houses in your area dip when you're in full swing

From one OCD sufferer to another may i ask how much are the wheel bags ?
I can admit to that too...
Garage, house, car...immaculate!

Power66 on German eBay. Great service!
I think I have 4 sets and all have been delivers quickly.
£30ish.
They are a genuine VW part, but I've not tried to see if we can order them over here.
Thank you.

Come November, I shall remove the 19" wheels and.....
......give them to Kenny
Funny man!
Sunshine alllll year round   Yeah right, when I lived in Inverkip the bloody rain used to come uphill and it rained from March until Novmebr one year
Plus it would mean I could jack your car up and whip your wheels off and leave you with a set of standard monzas
-
Hi Gizzy.
Where is your post in there my dear?

Looking at them, I'd say they were the same as the VW branded ones, but all black and 1/3rd of the price!!
They have the same pictures on them.

Hi Gizzy.
Where is your post in there my dear?
Many moons ago I lived in Inverkip which is just up from Ardrossan, when it rained (which was much of the time) the rain came up the hill towards our house. Thought I would mention it as it is the wettest side of the UK.
Gizzy
By the way I want a set of those VWR alloys like Ess three and Neil have on theirs, I am sick with envy and may just have to kill to get a set.

They are not worth murder. Prostitution? Soft porn? Nah. Keep the Shadows. Believe me, none look as good. I have seen many of these wheels in the 'flesh' and they are disappointing lookswise IMO.

Hang on now...
Is any of this on offer? I could be tempted to part with mine...

Here speaks a bling-meister.
The GTI is verging on being a bit gangsta-rapper for me. A good dose of anti-bling is what's required.

Now, now, you must not read too much into this. You've been drinking too much of the black stuff. I know, stranger things happen at sea. Gizzy and I have a perfect understanding of each other.

Steady on sailor. Blingmeister? Now that is not nice. All I did was increase the size and beautify my knob and put two extra pedals to rest my handmade shoes on something worthwhile. No need to get into a spin, dear heart.
Reactions in red, just like our cars!

No drinking of anything alcoholic out here...so it can't be Guinness to which you refer.
I'll certainly not be drinking oil...it's worth too much. I'm obliged to stuff that down the pipeline.
I hear Methanol isn't too bad with Coke though.

Blingmeister indeed.
Micro-phallus blingmeister perhaps, judging by the need to increase both the size and shininess of your 'knob'?
I think this conversation is best terminated here and now... :lipsrsealed:

I've asked about postage to the UK and he reckons €17. Grand total of about £22.50.

Totally agree with places like kwikfit etc. There all morons who have no idea what to do. I must of gone to around 3 places all saying to me then can do it.
In the end took it to jbs auto desgin which is in chesterfield. And right away tracking sorted felt like heaven lol.
Never get your car tracked from any of these idiot companies they simpley have no idea.
