Took a look at oil level today and I reckon it needs a top up, what oil would you guys recommend.
I am on holiday at present and not near a dealer so it would need to be something I can buy at Halfrauds.
Thanks

Worth reading that if you get 5 mins.
(Most important bit of that thread. Is that the oil says its Approved rather than meets VW 504.00 standard. VW also stress this in bold in the hand book)
IIRC this is what i have :undecided:
Castrol Edge 5W30
http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_169996_langId_-1_categoryId_165581
-
VW spec is 504.00 for petrol engines. This is the latest VW Long Life spec oil: SAE 5W30.
The last time I was in my local Halfords they had no 5W30 fully synthetic oil.
Hope you are having a good holiday.
-
Thanks
Will toddle off to Halfords tomorrow and see if they've got the Castrol stuff, if not can only hope to find a car accessory store and see if they have any.
As ever this forum and you guys always come up with the right help and advice.
Thanks
Gizzy
PS Enjoying hols and a bloody good rest.

Fool proof way of getting the correct oil is to buy it from your local dealer
I also find their oil is cheaper than anywhere else
-
Halfords.

Aye, from memory a litre of the good stuff is about £10-£13 depending what discount the dealer gives you. It was actually castrol stuff they sold me in the dealers

Halfords do a few engine oils you don't have to use Castrol.
0W/30 Oils (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/EngineOilGuidedSalesCmd?action=findEngineOilsByGrade&storeId=10001&catalogId=10151&categoryId=165581&langId=-1&oilGrade=5W%2F30&oilType=Fully+synthetic&engineType=dieselEngine&amountRequired=fullService&x=29&y=15)

If you read the thread i posted a link too in my previous reply. It will let you know what too look for and why.

Costco used to sell a three pack of the Castrol Edge stuff for a very reasonable amount ( 3 x 1 litre bottles).. worked out about £7 a bottle I think. I'll check next time I'm in the Leeds store this week.
It was the genuine VW approved oil BTW ... same as you get at the dealers with 504.00 VW on the label
-
Exactly as i said previously make sure it says Approved NOT meets VW 504.00
as meets means nothing.
-
My dealer gave me a litre of Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow when I picked up the car last week.

Could someone point out what filter I should use too and how to change it exactly ? If were topping up the oil it would be best to change the filter too, TT advises every 5000 miles.

Im not sure i understand what you meen Kev?
If your just topping up the level because the level on the dipstick is low or gone down alittle as when cars run in they can use aliitle oil then you simply add oil.
If your talking about an oil change as i think you maybe are then you can find information about location of the oil filter cartridge on document page 23 and page 24 of this link below (PDF page number=27,28)

I used Mobil 1 ESP for my change. VW approved. You guys pay ALOT for oil. It was almost 4x what I would of paid in the states. I changed it at 9400 miles and am sending the old oil to get analyzed to see if a 10k oil change is safe or not. I will post up the report when I get it back

Correction of my old post:
It seems mobil1 esp 5w30 is on the approved list but no other mobil1 oil is.

Right guys
Been to Halfords and bought the castrol edge recommended for VW engines, cost £15.99  but car now topped up so I'm happy.
Thanks all for your help

He says that an oil and filter change every 5k miles ? It might be the filter cartridge in that pdf doc ?
-
I see he recomends an oil change and filter change every 5K
The oil filter and oil cartridge are the same thing. They use to change filters as they were all in one, now you just change the cartridge insides of the plastic filter (the paper type eliment on the inside) Its more messy. Its to save the enviroment so they say,
As an engineer i find this quite funny as cars from the 50s and 60s had cartridges you changed and going over to encased plastic filters was looked on as a progress. Now we have gone back the other way. Funny this progress lark.

You think it would be an idea to change it then ? Also, the 1 year service for my car is only a few months away, would this get changed then anyway ?
-
If your service is only a few months away i would not bother to do it if i was you.
Basically your yearly service is simply an oil and oil filter(Cartridge element) change anyway and a look over the car to make sure its all right.
So yes they will do this.

cool, will just do a top up with the castrol edge 5w30 then, thanks for the help.

+1, my service is due end of July so I'm just gonna top up the oil for now.
-
my filter was like this except it had a male fitting on it.(http://i454.photobucket.com/albums/qq269/dubvoo/served/TJ_FB5421.jpg) When you remove it there is a check valve and you dont spill a drop of oil unless you hammer a screwdriver in it to break the tension then realize you have the wrong filter and no way to get a new one like i did. And the you can spill a litre of oil on your brick driveway that wont come off

My dealer gave me a litre of Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow when I picked up the car last week.
That's the oil I got from my dealer, gave me a free top up then I bought a litre for £15.
-
Motul 8100 X-Cess 5W40 or Motul Specific 502-505.00 what i use on my GTI, religiously.

SLX is dicontinued - I wonder if the dealers have old stock... out of interest is it 504/507.00?

The 40 aint that good for cold weather though, is it ?

It's the 5W bit that refers to the low temp performance, the 40 means the oil retains more viscosity at higher temperatures than the 5W30 weight oil. If he's doing lots of city driving in Texas that'll be what he wants. As long as its changed regularly it is fine.

I used to know this, and as I am too lazy to check it, would you kindly please clarify:-
(1) The lower the no in front of W, then the oil will maintain its properties at lower temperatures and the oil can be used in really freezing conditions?
(2) The higher the no after W, then this would mean a more viscous oil?

Yep, that's right. The lower the first number, the less thick the oil becomes at low temp. The higher the second number, the higher the viscosity (thickness) at operating temperatures.

Very true, in US VW recommends 5W40 and service departments use 5w40 all around US whether it is Arizona or NY.
If I lived in a cold climate, I would use 0w30, which a lot of Northern folks here in States use.

Mac7, haven't checked the spec code yet cos' only just noticed your post [not very observant], but it was in a proper Castrol bottle with the correct label on it. Are you sure it's discontinued?
