I see he recomends an oil change and filter change every 5K

The oil filter and oil cartridge are the same thing. They use to change filters as they were all in one, now you just change the cartridge insides of the plastic filter (the paper type eliment on the inside) Its more messy. Its to save the enviroment so they say,

As an engineer i find this quite funny as cars from the 50s and 60s had cartridges you changed and going over to encased plastic filters was looked on as a progress. Now we have gone back the other way. Funny this progress lark.

You think it would be an idea to change it then ? Also, the 1 year service for my car is only a few months away, would this get changed then anyway ?

If your service is only a few months away i would not bother to do it if i was you.

Basically your yearly service is simply an oil and oil filter(Cartridge element) change anyway and a look over the car to make sure its all right.

So yes they will do this.

my filter was like this except it had a male fitting on it. When you remove it there is a check valve and you dont spill a drop of oil unless you hammer a screwdriver in it to break the tension then realize you have the wrong filter and no way to get a new one like i did. And the you can spill a litre of oil on your brick driveway that wont come off

My dealer gave me a litre of Castrol SLX Professional Powerflow when I picked up the car last week.

That's the oil I got from my dealer, gave me a free top up then I bought a litre for £15.

SLX is dicontinued - I wonder if the dealers have old stock... out of interest is it 504/507.00?

It's the 5W bit that refers to the low temp performance, the 40 means the oil retains more viscosity at higher temperatures than the 5W30 weight oil. If he's doing lots of city driving in Texas that'll be what he wants. As long as its changed regularly it is fine.
